Samsung announces new Gear VR headset with Galaxy S6, S6 Edge compatibility

samsung gear vr first look aa (5 of 9)

Samsung has just announced that its releasing a new version of its virtual reality headset, the Gear VR, with Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge compatibility. Much like the first edition Gear VR, which is only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4, this new headset is still considered an “Innovator Edition”. Samsung is still working on bringing their virtual reality technology to the next level, so this is still very much a beta product.

In terms of overall design and functionality, the new Gear VR will carry all of the original headset’s features. The new device is, however, is purported to be 15% lighter overall and feature an expanded 96-degree field of vision. The headset will also connect to one of the new Galaxy S handsets via a MicroUSB cord. There’s no information on price or availability quite yet, though we do know it will eventually be available in the Frost White color.

Samsung has just announced its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets today at MWC 2015. Both devices feature a glass front and back plate, surrounded by a premium-feeling aluminum trim. The devices feature a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display and a Samsung Exynos 7420 processor backed by 3GB of RAM. While there’s no SD card expansion on either device, storage options have been bumped up to 32/64/128GB variants. We went hands-on with both devices earlier today, and you can find the official first impressions videos by following the links below.

Samsung unveils Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge for April 10

galaxy_s6_and_edge_duo

Samsung, as expected, today announced its latest flagship smartphone experience, the Galaxy S6. What’s more, it also unveiled a dual-edge variant known as the Galaxy S6 edge. Yes, that’s a lower case ‘edge’.

Powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop, the two are designed with a combination of metal and glass with a screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The pair feature 5.1-inch Super AMOLED displays at 2560 x 1440 pixel (Quad HD) resolution.

The rear camera is listed at 16-megapixels with image stabilization, auto HDR, and other features and effects. The front-facing camera is 5-megapixels; however, both offer an aperture of f/1.9 which means improved low-light conditions. Other details include CAT6 LTE support, dual-ban Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and Samsung’s ultra power-savings mode.

As for the processor, Samsung stayed home this time, employing its own octa-core (4x 2.1GHz,  4×1.5GHz) processor. Additionally, you’ll find 3GB LPDDR4 , UFS 2.0 flash, and a 2600mAH built-in battery. Speaking of which, the two devices come with wireless charging with WPC and PMA standards. Samsung promises 10 minutes of charging can add four hours of usage; going from 0-100% is said to take half the time of the iPhone 6.

Samsung was very big on the fact that there is “no lag” and the devices don’t have a bunch of hard to use features that are tucked away in places people don’t go. Along those lines, the UI is much cleaner and offers far less “Samsung” overlay.

In terms of software, the two come with a handful of Microsoft apps and services (OneDrive with 115GB free storage and OneNote) Toss in some Find My Device and an enhanced KNOX security platform and you’ve got a robust and secure suite.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are equipped with NFC + MST support via Samsung Pay. This enables them to be accepted anywhere someone takes credits cards, NFC, and barcode readers. Your fingerprint is your password and encryption ensures your payment methods are not compromised.

Availability

Samsung will begin selling the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge starting from April 10 with 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage capacities. The two will be offered in a handful of colorful “jewel tones”, including White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Blue Topaz and Green Emerald.

The Galaxy S 6 and Galaxy S 6 edge will be available to U.S. customers starting in April across various channels. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless will carry the Galaxy S 6 and Galaxy S 6 edge, and Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless and MetroPCS will carry the Galaxy S 6.

Samsung Experience Shops at Best Buy, as well as Amazon.com, Costco Wholesale, Inc., Sam’s Club, Target and Walmart will also carry the Galaxy S 6 and Galaxy S 6 edge.

This version of the Gear VR has mechanical ventilation to prevent overheating and push usage time. Also, to extend usage time, Samsung added the option to power the virtual reality headset with its USB port. Samsung Galaxy S6 vs. HTC One M9

S6vsM9

Samsung and HTC are going head-to-head today, both with devices that shine and fall short in some places.

While both powered by Android 5.0, Samsung puts its TouchWiz software overlay on top, this year with a cleaner and lighter design that they emphasized has “zero lag”. HTC has integrated their Sense 7 into Android with an improved home screen that gives the user much more customization options, such as changing the way icons look, which has only been done by third-party launchers.

In terms of processor used, this is a battle of Samsung’s in-house Exynos chip versus Qualcomm’s widely used Snapdragon series. Both chips are capable of 64-bit processing and include 8 cores inside them.

As of right now, Samsung is offering more storage options than HTC, including a 128 GB option. But they removed the option for expandable storage, while HTC is offering up to 128 GB expandable storage with micro-SD card.

In the camera department, HTC has put their 4 UltraPixel on the front of the device for great low-light performance and wide angles, and opted for a 20.7 MP camera on the back with autofocus and dual-LED flash. Samsung has promised with their new 16 MP camera that it has the best low-light performance of any smartphone, even the iPhone 6.

Samsung has decided to shrink the battery in the S6 to 2,550 mAh compared to their 2,800 battery last year. HTC has improved with a 2,840 mAh battery, that they promise will give the user 21 hours of talk time. Samsung has promised they have made many optimizations to the software, and have included quick charging capabilities that give the S6 four hours of use with only ten minutes of charging time. The One M9 also has QuickCharge 2.0, for 60% of battery charge in 30 minutes.

An honorable mention is the phones’ speakers. Samsung has confirmed the S6 will has 1.5x clearer and louder speakers than their S5, and HTC has improved Boomsound once again to stay king of the speakers department with Dolby 5.1 surround.

So, do either of these two announcements make you want one or the other? Let us know in the comments!

Carriers announce that they will carry the S6 and S6 Edge

samsung_galaxy_s6_front_back_standing_blue

Despite a March 1 announcement, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be available after a bit, starting April 10. As such, carriers here in the US and abroad have announced that they will be carrying the new Galaxy flagship. Those include, T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint in the US and Vodafone and Three in the UK. As far as pre-paid is concerned there are a few carriers that will carry the new Galaxy.

Cricket Wireless announced that it will carry the S6 while US Cellular announced that the S6 and S6 Edge will grace its network. Crickett Wireless has mentioned that the S6 will be available for $35 a month after $5 auto-pay credit. There’s no word on other carriers, like Verizon, and if they intend to carry the new Galaxy (we would guess that they will) or when most of these carriers will actually have the phone. Either way, we’ll let you know when they do.

Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with Microsoft apps out of the box

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge with a Microsoft Apps folder

Those rumors that Samsung would reduce the glut of in-house software on the Galaxy S6, and include some of Microsoft’s apps? They’re at least partly true. Both the S6 and S6 edge will ship with a “Microsoft Apps” folder that currently includes OneDrive, OneNote and Skype. There’s no hint of Office (at least not yet), but you will get 115GB of free OneDrive cloud storage for two years. You certainly won’t be hurting for photo backup space, then. It’s hard to say if the bundle is the direct result of Microsoft and Samsung calling a truce in their Android royalty dispute. Either way, the move is going to give Microsoft’s services a lot more exposure. While they’ve been available on Android for some time, their absence in phone bundles has typically made it easier to lean on equivalents from the likes of Google and Dropbox.

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs. Galaxy S5

S6vS5

The wraps are off Samsung’s new flagship phone, the Galaxy S6, and here it is compared to last year’s Galaxy S5. We’re looking at an increase in resolution with the same 5.1 inch screen size, from full 1080p to Quad HD 1440p. Samsung has also chosen to ditch the Snapdragon processor in favor of their own Exyos chip, which is an octa-core chip with one quad-core at 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and another quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57.

The camera experience has improved too, with Samsung claiming the low-light performance is much better than its other phones and the iPhone 6. Camera specs for the S6 include a 16 MP sensor, f/1.9 aperture, Smart Optical Image Stabilization, real-time HDR, and LED flash compared to the S5’s 1/2.6” sensor size, and the front camera includes a 5 MP sesnor and  f/1.9 aperture.

Expandable storage has been taken out of the S6, but Samsung has given the option of 32, 64, and 128 GB storage options, compared to 16 and 32 GB with the S5.

Battery size has shrunken in the Galaxy S6 in favor of a slimmer body. This may anger many Samsung fans, but Samsung has made many software optimizations with the S6 and has included quick charging capabilities, giving the S6 four hours of use with only 10 minutes of charging.

Samsung releases second Galaxy S6 teaser video

Samsung Galaxy S6 2nd teaser video

A few days ago, Samsung released its first teaser video for the upcoming Galaxy S6, which was all about the handset’s camera, and the company has just tweeted its second of such videos. This time the video is all about speed – I think.

Again, we aren’t treated to any sneak peeks and there aren’t any features mentioned by name. However, it’s almost inevitable that the Samsung Galaxy S6 will boast cutting edge processor technology come its release. Samsung recently announced a revised, more energy efficient 14nm Exynos 7 Octa, which would be right on the “speed” message of the video. Similarly, if the reduced bloatware rumors turn out to be true, the Galaxy S6’s software may also be leaner and nippier this time around.

Earlier today, Samsung also talked about future support for multiple wireless charging standards. Although the Galaxy S6 wasn’t mentioned by name, the post heavily suggested that the S6 would be one of the company’s first handsets to feature support for multiple wireless charging technologies.

After the first video, we are also pretty sure that camera technology will again be an important feature in the Galaxy S6. Samsung’s executives have promised intelligent camera technology and the company recently published an infographic about the evolution of its camera technology.

What do you think about the latest teaser? Are you excited to see what the Galaxy S6 has to offer?
