Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge camera put to test against Apple iPhone 6 Plus

samsung galaxy s6 vs iphone 6 6

With the ever expanding capabilities of camera sensors on our favorite smartphones, sample photos and comparisons are becoming more and more relevant to your purchasing decisions. Players like Apple with their line of iPhones and Android players like Samsung and Sony have been making waves, bringing the general casual smartphone photography to the next level.

We’ve got a few photo shootouts coming for you, but for now, let’s take a look at of few sample photos from the Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge out of Denmark. In the below sets, the top image is the iPhone, the bottom image belongs to Samsung.

For those familiar with Apple vs Android phone shootouts, I hope you are pleased with the results you see here. Usually Apple comes out the victor, but we’re not so sure that is true today. Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus clocks in with 8MP, 18mm squared sensor shooting at a 4:3 aspect ratio, f/2.2 with image stabilization. HD video recording is complemented by 240fps slow-motion capture at 720p.

Samsung’s equipped sensor on the Galaxy S6 Edge looks slightly better on paper, 16MP, 19.9mm squared sensor shoots at 16:9 aspect ratio, f/1.9 with image stabilization. 4K video recording is on board, but only 120fps slow motion at 720p.

If the devil is in the details, you just witnessed all the evil there is to see in the camera samples. 100% zoom reveals all the grain, or lack thereof.

OK, these phones perform quite well in the bright of day. Perhaps there is a touch of yellow in the iPhone photos. Now, how do they handle night images? Our cameraman didn’t wait for night, instead headed into an enclosed parking garage.

What is this you see, yes, it is strengths and weaknesses from both camps. To my untrained eye, the iPhone 6 Plus loses a ton of clarity vs the Galaxy S6 Edge. There is also a huge discrepancy in the white balance of the photos, perhaps your translation of the original site can identify which phone managed to capture the coloring more accurately.

Last, what you all may have been waiting for, video capture. Here is the Apple iPhone 6 Plus shooting those cars in the dark of the parking garage at its best 1080p resolution.

Last, but certainly not least, is the 4K video capture from the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, taken in the same dimly lit parking garage.

http://video.mobilsiden.dk/v.ihtml/player.html?source=share&photo%5Fid=11158853

Once again, the videos give off that huge difference in white balance, but the resulting imagery may leave you debating realistic colors against almost HDR-like image brightness balancing.

As mentioned, don’t let this be the end of your research if you are comparing these two devices for purchase. We have our own Samsung Galaxy S6 (Edge) vs Apple iPhone 6 (Plus) camera shootouts in the works. Stay tuned.

In the end, the choice is yours, obviously – from what you see so far, do you think the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has overthrown the Apple iPhone 6 Plus in this camera comparison?

Rogers is the latest carrier to stop rolling out Galaxy S 5 Lollipop update

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-Note-4-Android-5.0-Lollipop-bBad news for Galaxy S 5 owners in Canada; Rogers is the latest carrier to stop pushing out their Lollipop update to Samsung’s GS5. After some reported issues of boot looping and other problems, it looks like the carrier has indefinitely suspended the update with no time frame on when you can expect it to start back up.

Users on Bell are still getting the update, so the bugs might be limited to Rogers’ specific device, but with how many problems everyone is reporting with the 5.0 update on their device, it’s very hard to tell right now. The 5.1 upgrade can’t come soon enough.

Getting Android devices updated is a touchy subject, and things like this certainly don’t help Google’s, or any Android OEM’s, situation.

Chainfire roots T-Mobile Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge prior to official release

samsung_galaxy_s6_front_flat_whiteIt’s pretty rare to see an Android device that doesn’t get rooted at some point in it’s life cycle, and it looks like Samsung’s Galaxy S6 isn’t going to escape that fate. Chainfire’s famous root method has already been confirmed to work on T-Mobile Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant, and those devices aren’t publicly available yet.

Apparently there weren’t many changes that needed to be made, so T-Mobile isn’t going to be locking this one down like some other carriers inevitably will be. Chainfire does mention that rooting the device is very likely to trip Samsung’s KNOX security measures, and an untripped KNOX will probably be required for phone based payments. If you root the device, say goodbye to one of the biggest selling points of the GS6.

Either way, we’ve got at least a month to go before the S6 hits T-Mobile’s network officially, so you’ve got some time to think it over.

AT&T to get Samsung Galaxy S6 Active

AT&T usually gets the best phones first, and again they will get the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active.  The Galaxy S6 does not carry on the tradition of being dust-proof and water-resistant like the Galaxy S5, as Samsung focused more on quality materials rather than durability.  The Galaxy S6 has a metal frame with a glass front and back, similar to the Sony Xperia Z3, thus leaving is prone to the elements.  The S5 was made mostly out of plastic with exception for the screen, and many reviewers focused on that as their main complaint.

According to Sammobile.com, AT&T will carry the Galaxy S6 Active(SM-G890A) which will be water-resistant and dust-proof.  All of the internals will remain the same, with the exception of a larger battery(3500mAh.)

Samsung Galaxy Tab A Plus with WiFi makes an appearance at the FCC

Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_S_8.4_Back_Slanted_Camera_Samsung_Logo_TA

The amount of tablets released by Samsung over the last two years has been insane. Many thought that last year’s Galaxy Tab S would put an end to that because of its impressive specifications and price. That belief is clearly wrong as the company is moving forward with new tablets. The Galaxy Tab A Plus will start the next step for Samsung’s tablet strategy and it just slid through the FCC here in the United States with the model number SM-P350. The variant here is WiFi-only.

samsung_sm-p350_fcc

The following is a recap of the alleged specifications for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A Plus:

  • 8-inch, 1024×600 display (4:3 aspect ratio)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB of RAM
  • 16 GB internal storage
  • 4200mAh battery
  • 7.4mm thin
  • Samsung S Pen

Samsung Galaxy S 4 owners in the United Kingdom getting Android 5.0.1

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Front_Top_Samsung_Logo_Version_2_TA

Starting today, a software update is rolling out to owners of the Galaxy S 4 located in the United Kingdom. The software update overhauls the device with Lollipop and the specific version here is Android 5.0.1. Remember that this is strictly for those in the United Kingdom. Other markets, including the United States, are seeing extremely slow arrivals of the latest version of Android.

Upcoming Samsung Orbis smartwatch to sport Exynos 7420

Samsung Tizen Round Smartwatch (2)

More details continue to surface regarding Samsung’s next venture into the smartwatch category, the Orbis. Today we are hearing that it could be powered by the 14nm Exynos 7420.

Immediately you have to ask yourself, why in the world would Samsung utilize an octa-core processor in a smartwatch. Samsung wouldn’t be using the Exynos for speed, but is instead focusing on battery life. Higher end processors are simply more efficient in consuming power.

Apple is already getting slack for the Apple Watch’s 18 hour battery life, and that’s with the display off most of the time. My G Watch R will easily last 24 hours with the screen on all the time and 2 days with it off. Exactly what is Samsung targeting here is anyone’s guess, but if they can get 4 or 5 days battery life, it would be a feather in their cap.

Now it remains to be seen if Samsung will actually use all 8 cores on the watch itself. They might manufacture a toned down version of it because it would simply be overkill.

Still no word on when Samsung will release the Orbis, but my guess is over the summer when Samsung Pay is officially launched.

Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE (GT-I9505) receives Android Lollipop in UK

moto x vs galaxy s4 aa design s4 back in hand

I’ve lost count of how many Samsung handsets have received an Android Lollipop update this year, but the Galaxy S4 LTE (GT-I9505) is the latest to join the list, at least for owners in the United Kingdom.

The Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update began rolling out earlier today, bringing the new Material Design-esque Touchwiz interface, tweaked apps, and performance and battery improvements to Samsung’s LTE equipped Galaxy S4. The standard Galaxy S4 received its own 5.0.1 Lollipop update about a month ago.

You should spot an OTA update notification come through at some point, if it hasn’t already. Alternatively, the update can be installed through Samsung’s KIES software suite.
