Samsung rumored to be developing a custom mobile CPU core

samsung logo mwc 2015 5

Samsung seems confident in its Exynos 7420, having opted to cut Qualcomm out of the picture with regard to the Galaxy S6. Building on its Exynos line-up, the company is rumored to be moving towards a completely in-house processor design, as sources suggest that Samsung is developing its own mobile CPU cores for future products.

According to sources in the semiconductor industry, Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong has instructed executives to “to strengthen technology capability in order to design not only mobile devices but also various semiconductors.” The implication being that Samsung could begin designing its own CPU and GPU cores or other integrated circuits from scratch, if it hasn’t done so already.

The rumor comes as analysts are raising this year’s expectations for Samsung’s growing semiconductor business, which has become an increasingly important division for Samsung as smartphone sales have slowed.

The same sources state that Samsung will be working on its own 64-bit CPU core design, rather than licensing the reference Cortex-A designs provided by ARM. The CPU is expected to begin showing results sometime in the first quarter of 2016. “Seeing results” isn’t exactly a clear statement, but seems to suggest a transition from the internal development stage towards final production, right around the time that the company should announce the Galaxy S7.

samsung 64-bit SoC

Samsung has actually been hinting at moving over to its own CPU core design since Samsung Analyst Day 2013, with presentation slides suggesting that Samsung’s own 64-bit core will be its successor to the current 64-bit ARM implementation.

Rumors have also pointed to some in-house GPU technology too and Samsung has been catching up with Qualcomm in the LTE modem department too, with a SoC integrated modem package expected later this year.

As well as gaining more control over the specifications of its mobile products, Samsung looks to be keen to and reduce its reliance on Qualcomm SoCs and technologies developed by other companies. Although research and development in the IC industry is expensive, Samsung will be able to leverage its leading foundry business to close the cost gap on its competitors.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 will be one of the hottest devices on the market when it launches around the world next month. Millions of consumers will rush to purchase the device that takes Samsung in a new direction. The Galaxy S6 features a metal and glass body, two materials that just scream high-end. With that high-end look, however, comes concerns with how durable the device is. That is why protecting the Galaxy S6 will be important for many consumers.

Among the various cases that are capable of protecting the Galaxy S6 is the Spigen Capsule Solid. The accessory maker, which is known for its stylish and quality products, designed the Capsule Solid with simplicity and functionality in mind. Sprint introduces new Samsung S5, and Tab 4 and service bundle all for 100 dollars a month

Sprint released a new promotion yesterday, and it is quite the deal.  For 100 dollars a month, and no money down, users can pick up a Samsung Galaxy S5®, or a Samsung Galaxy S® 5 Sport as well as a Samsung Galaxy Tab® 4(7 inch version).  The S5 is almost a year old now, but it can still hold its own quite well against the flagships of 2015 as it came with the best hardware available in the Spring of 2014.  In addition to the Galaxy S5, customers will also get a Tab 4 with LTE, a mid-range tablet from Samsung.

For the Galaxy S5 customers will get unlimited talk, text, and high-speed data, and for the Tab 4 they will get 2GB of data per month which is enough to post about 5000 pictures to Facebook per month, if your heart so desires.  According to Sprint, this deal should save its customers about 300 dollars a month.

As an AT&T user, I value having quality cellular reception over price, but I do love that Sprint and T-Mobile are forcing the big wireless providers to get more creative with their pricing in order to keep their customers.

Customers are required to sign a 2-year contract in order to qualify for this bundle.

Samsung Galaxy S6 does not support all features of the Android 5.0 Camera2 API

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (47)

It was revealed yesterday that the Android 5.0 update on the Sony Xperia Z3 did not introduce the camera features from stock Android. Known as the Camera2 API, these features introduce the likes of RAW image capture and some other crucial features. It has now been revealed that even the Samsung Galaxy S6 , Galaxy S6 Edge and the HTC One M9 are missing these Camera2 API features.

The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge reportedly don’t have the .dng or RAW image capture support. The two devices are also said to be lacking shutter speed control, which might come as bad news for prospective buyers of the two flagships.

SpectraStudy has compiled a list of features missing with the two devices:

  • no manual white balance via RGB gains
  • no custom color space conversion matrix
  • no shutter speed control
  • no manual exposure parameters (only rough exposure steps control)
  • non-fixed metering, etc.

This also applies to other flagship devices like the HTC One M9 which was unveiled at the MWC. Interestingly, Google offers the full list of features from the Camera2 API on its Nexus devices like the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6.

What do you make of these exclusions by major companies like Samsung? Sound off below.
