Samsung begins production of smartphones in Indonesia

samsung_logo_with_people

Reports from August last year initially mentioned that Samsung was looking to open a manufacturing unit in Indonesia. A new report has now confirmed this and even goes onto say that the company has actually begun production in this unit.

This makes sense given that the company is looking to increase production of its flagship offerings, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. The unit is located in Cikarang, an industrial town near Jakarta, the country’s capital. It is said that Samsung expects to produce 1.5 million smartphones from this unit every month, which should help greatly in keeping up with the demand for its new devices.

Samsung’s phones are manufactured in China, South Korea as well as Vietnam and the addition of Indonesia will be welcomed by the company. The company hasn’t officially released a statement on this, but we’re bound to believe that production started in this unit earlier this year.

Micromax launches $110 Yu Yuphoria with 64-bit processor, 4G LTE and Cyanogenmod

Micromax has done it again! After creating buzz around the world with the Yu Yureka that piggybacked on Cyanogenmod, Micromax has launched the Yu Yuphoria with a 5-inch 720p display, metal frame, a 64-bit processor and Android Lollipop 5.0. based Cyanogenmod OS 12. And yes, all of that for under $110.

With its low-cost Yu line, the company is vying to take on popular mid-rangers by Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and Motorola. Marketed as “miracle in metal,” the Yu Yuphoria is 8.25mm thin around its waist and weighs just 143 grams. The display panel is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

Powered by Snapdragon 410 and Adreno 306 GPU, the handset has 2GB of RAM that is becoming a standard among mid-rangers these days. Also, it comes with 16GB internal storage that can be expanded via a microSD card. In the imaging department, the Yu Yuphoria sports a 5-megapixel front camera with an impressive f/2.0 aperture and an 8-megapixel f/2.2 rear camera.

The device scores points on the connectivity front (dual-SIM and 4G LTE) and audio output. It features a Wolfson audio chip, which promises 85+ decibels of sound. Wolfson is the same speaker that is used in Samsung’s Galaxy S flagships. The Yu Yuphoria features 2,230mAh battery and also supports Quick Charge 1.0. To read more about charging technology, follow this link.

There is no word on whether the phone will be available outside India, and even there buying it during flash sales will be an uphill task.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge smartphones aren’t selling too well in Japan

NTT - docomo Galaxy S6 edge

It may come as a surprise, but Samsung’s latest and greatest smartphones aren’t selling like hotcakes in Japan, despite removing its branding from the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge handsets in an attempt to ward off any ill-feeling towards the Korean company. To give an example of how poor sales have been, the S6 edge managed a respectable 10th place in its first week of sales before slipping down to 26th spot in its second week (April 27 – May 3). This is according to BCN‘s weekly survey of smartphone sales.

The Galaxy S6 hasn’t fared any better, sliding from 17th to 30th position in the same time period. As a comparison, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge handsets are in the top 5 in the UK’s smartphone rankings, and in second and third spots respectively on Amazon.de’s (Germany) rankings. In the U.S., the Galaxy S6 managed to double the amount of advance sales as its predecessor, the Galaxy S5. Not so in Japan though.

The mediocre sales of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in Japan will hurt all the more for Samsung as the iPhone 6 is the top selling smartphone in Japan, with another five iPhone models in the Top Ten alone. It’s going to be interesting to see what Samsung does next in its attempt to maximize Galaxy S6 and S6 edge sales in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Samsung strikes out in Japan… again

The Galaxy is everywhere.

The Galaxy is everywhere.

By all accounts, especially financial ones, the two Samsung flagships released last month are certified hits. The Galaxy S6, and its colleague the Galaxy S6 Edge, saw the Korean OEM reach a new level of build quality when it announced the pair of products, complete with a metal frame and glass back panel. They are, arguably, the best smartphones Samsung has produced to date, and by far the most costly.

Over in the land of Japan however, the tide hasn’t turned, at least judging by the poor sales the devices have rung up. A new report by Japanese marketing firm BCN has some rather somber news for Samsung: the Galaxy S6, upon its first week of release, ranked 17th among all devices sold, but would drop to 30th place just a week later. The Galaxy S6 Edge, viewed by many as the more desirable device thanks to its unique form factor, launched at the 10th place spot in its first week of sales, and then dropped to 26th place during the second week.

According to BCN on May 11, the Galaxy S6 Edge ranked 26th in the Japanese smartphone weekly sales rankings from April 27 to May 3. The sale of the model appeared to be smooth at first, ranking 10th the first week of its launch. However, its ranking went down by 16 notches in just one week. The Galaxy S6 also suffered from a drop in the rankings from 17th in the first week of its release to 30th place in the following week.

Apple-Japan-Nov-2014 Counterpoint

Samsung, whose market share has been hovering around 5% for some time now in Japan, is no doubt quite displeased with this news, especially after it has made some major sacrifices in order to try and better appeal to the Japanese market, namely removing its logo from everything under-the-sun and a total re-branding of all things to simply “Galaxy”. According to this report, Apple’s iPhone products are currently occupying 6 of the top 10 spots in Japan’s current sales ranking data, which would certainly go a long way to explaining part of the problem at hand.

Still, this situation is quite curious indeed, as the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge released with literally no competition whatsoever. It is being sold on two carriers, NTT docomo and au by KDDI, neither of which had any other product released in the month of April, or in the recent past for that matter. This would mean that not only has Samsung failed to break into the top 10 at launch, but it couldn’t even outsell existing handsets that have already been released.

There have been rumors floating around this year indicating the company might be intending to pull out of Japan soon. While nothing has been confirmed, this kind of performance problem is definitely not going to please anyone involved.

VR game ‘SMS Racing’ trivializes texting while driving

SMS Racing

Texting while driving is against the law and it can put you and other people on the road in serious danger. That can’t be understated. However, when it’s your main objective when playing a virtual reality racing game, it can also be seriously good fun. That’s the premise of SMS Racing, a diminutive game from Turbo Button that pits you against other racers as you drive, text and ultimately smash your way to victory.

When you first start off, you’ll notice you have just the one hand on the wheel with your other ready to operate a Samsung smartphone. The product placement is no coincidence, the game has been optimized for Samsung’s Gear VR, which will track head movement as you look down to reply to your friends’ messages using a randomized keyboard. You’ll traverse rural or city tracks and battle four AI drivers to place on the public leaderboard — just make sure you don’t demonstrate that behaviour on your early morning commute.

Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge receive fingerprint and other improvements in a new update

samsung galaxy s6 vs s6 edge aa (4 of 39)

Last week, a performance improving update began making its way out to Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge owners in Europe, addressing an issue with memory management. Samsung UK also announced that more “micro-updates” are in the works, and it seems that another one is now on the way.

Galaxy S6 G920FXXU1AOE3 update logA new update with the build number XXU1AOE3 (the previous version was XXU1AODG) has appeared, with a more detailed change-log this time. The 159MB update aims to improve the fingerprint scanner’s recognition process, implements a new unnamed feature in the Photo Editor, tweaks the interface in a few of Samsung’s own apps, and also improves compatibility with a number of accessories. Oddly, there’s no mention of directly addresses the memory management issue that some users are experiencing, but this version does boast general performance improvements.

Last week’s update seems to have only had a limited roll-out, leaving us to wonder if Samsung plans to bring the memory issue update to other users. It seems that the previous update was just for one or two select carriers in the UK and this latest update is intended for a general roll-out.

Version XXU1AOE3 is landing in Asia and Europe as we speak, so be sure to click that Software Update button in the settings to see if it has arrived for you yet. Let us know if you notice any improvements.

Samsung will soon be deploying micro-updates to fix buggy Lollipop updates

Android-5.0-LollipopSamsung has updated a handful of its devices to Lollipop, but those updates haven’t been without bugs. Fortunately, the company hears all the complains, and they’ll supposedly be working on some smaller updates to get everything sorted out for “various devices,” at least according to the Samsung Mobile UK Twitter account.

There’s no word on how long it’ll take Samsung to get these updates out to devices, and if they’ll be rolled out to devices outside of the UK, but let’s hope for the best.

Samsung now rolling out Lollipop OTA for the Galaxy Core Prime in Poland

samsung_logo_tvs_477

Samsung is currently rolling out the Android 5.0.2 update to all its unlocked variants of the Galaxy Core Prime in Poland. This upgrade brings the latest build of Lollipop, as well as a plethora of bug fixes and stability improvements to the handset.

Hit the break for the full changelog.

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the mosttimely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

As is customary with all manufacturer updates, the upgrade is being rolled out in stages, but if you don’t feel like waiting for a notification confirming that it’s ready for your Core Prime, you could always search for the update manually.

Galaxy S6 gets one-click root method, includes AT&T and Verizon models and doesn’t trip KNOX

samsung_galaxy_s6_colorsWe’ve already seen some progress being made on rooting the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but a new method called PingPong root offers up a quick and easy way to root nearly every model of the S6. Yep, that includes the Verizon and AT&T versions, both of which tend to be notoriously far behind on progress with these flagship devices.

As an added bonus, this method doesn’t trip Samsung’s KNOX counter, which means you won’t lose access to things like Samsung Pay whenever that launches later this year. Some root methods tend to interfere with Samsung’s security measure, so it’s great to see this method work around that.

The process is pretty straightforward and involves sideloading an APK and tapping a few buttons, which is about as simple as we’ve ever seen for a root method. If you’re interested, hit the link below to get started. Remember, though, that if you’re not comfortable with rooting your phones, things can go wrong, and no one is responsible for any damage that could happen to your brand new Galaxy S6.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge successor surfaces

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_Edge_Edge_Side_02_TA

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is by far one of Samsung’s more interesting devices, especially as developers begin to create compatible applications to fully take advantage of it. Developers and consumers who liked the device will be pleased to hear that the Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge successor has surfaced on the HTML5test database.

Under code name ‘ZenZero,’ the device is running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and Samsung Browser version 3.2. Of course, there hasn’t been any official confirmation about the device, but it does interestingly line up with Samsung’s Project Zen, recently outed by SamMobile.

In SamMobile’s report, it is said that the new Galaxy Note Edge will sport a 5.4-5.5-inch display, and will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 chipset.

As much as it’ll be fascinating to see another Edge device, what we really need is developers to begin creating intriguing apps for them. It’d be exciting to even see Samsung release some useful applications for the device. Obviously Samsung sees an intrigue for the Edge devices, otherwise they wouldn’t continue making them.

What do you think about a new Edge device? Do we really want one? Let us know in the comments.
