Why not to buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 5
We can understand that you are fairly excited about the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Note 5, and want to grab it as soon as it gets available on your carrier or the nearest Samsung store. We, however, have a word or two of caution for you. While the phablet packs some of the best hardware ever seen in a smartphone along with a clickable S pen and a physical keyboard accessory, it lacks some basic features that could prove to be a deal breaker for you.
It packs a smaller battery than the Galaxy Note 4
Perhaps the compact size of the new Samsung phablet could be blamed for the company’s failure to fit a bigger battery. But it was quite a surprising decision on Samsung’s part to downgrade the Note 5’s battery size despite having faced the flak for small batteries in its current flagships, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. It will be interesting to see how much screen on time the Note 5’s 3,000 mAh battery will be able to give especially since it features a big 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display. Its predecessor came with 3,200 mAh battery with a similar screen size and display resolution.
Its battery is not removable
Naturally, you would like to carry an extra battery if your phone doesn’t have one that lasts an entire day upon heavy usage. But no, Samsung has decided to take away even that option from the Galaxy Note 5. Its glossy glass back is pretty, but you can’t remove it to swap batteries. Trust us, it is all part of Samsung’s bigger conspiracy of not wanting us to leave our homes or workplaces in order to keep our phones alive.
There is no microSD card
The new Note phablet is only available in 32GB and 64GB variants, and there is no microSD card slot available onboard in case you decide to expand it. So, be sure to pick the Note 5 with maximum storage you can afford during the time you buy it.
No IR blaster
If you buy a $700 phone, you want it to make your life easier, but apparently the Galaxy Note 5 lacks even the infrared blaster that its predecessor and current flagships enjoy. So if you reach out to your Note 5 in the middle of the night to control the air conditioner or TV, you are likely to regret you decision of buying it in the first place.

Samsung quietly adds 128GB options for the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5
Samsung has quietly listed 128GB models of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. At yesterday’s announcement, Samsung told the press the two devices would only come in 32/64GB models, which was to many consumers’ dismay since these devices will not have microSD card support.
The 128GB models should be available to buy through Samsung’s website alongside other memory options on August 21, barring no unforeseen delays.
There are a few odd details, such as the 128GB S6 Edge+ only being offered in black through Sprint and T-Mobile. But it’s available in black or gold via Verizon and AT&T. It’s slightly disappointing if you have a color preference.
Either way, this is still fortunate news. Having a 128GB memory option will no doubt help offset the disappointment of offering no microSD card support, despite Samsung saying there would only be 32/64GB options.
Both 32GB/64GB options of either device are not far under the $1,000 mark, and there’s no doubt that the 128GB model will put you past that. What’s unfortunate is that it doesn’t seem Samsung is offering any 128GB memory options unlocked and straight from their store.
Let’s just hope carriers will actually offer these options on August 21 and this isn’t some mistake. After all, none of these memory options actually show up on the carrier websites themselves, and that’s a bit worrisome.

Clove UK launches petition to pressure Samsung into bringing the Note 5 to Europe
Galaxy note fans in Europe were dismayed to find out yesterday that Samsung isn’t bringing the Note 5 to the region in 2015. Instead, the Korean handset maker is only giving them the option to buy the Galaxy S6 Edge+, a jumped up version of the Galaxy S6 Edge that was announced back in March. The UK retailer, Clove Technology, isn’t happy about this, and has launched a petition in a bid to show Samsung it has made a mistake.
Appeal to bring Samsung Galaxy Note 5 to Europe #note5foreurope http://t.co/JkmnHSrX2n
— Clovetechnology (@clovetechnology) August 14, 2015
Clove hopes that enough people will sign the petition and retweet the hashtag #note5foreurope to pressure Samsung into changing its strategy. It’s doubtful whether the petition will have any effect on Samsung to be honest, but if you are also disappointed that the Note 5 due to be released Europe in 2015, why not sign the petition and re-tweet the tweet, it could work. As the lottery jingle used to say, you have to in it to win it. Failing that, it’s a case of finding out which LTE bands the US Note 5 supports, with a view towards importing the handset from the US if you’re a die-hard Note fan.
What do you think about Samsung’s decision to withhold the Note 5 from Europe for the rest of 2015? If you are a Note fan, will you wait until it eventually becomes available or will you look towards a different brand for your next smartphone?

Sprint has started accepting pre-orders for the new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ and plans to start shipping devices starting Friday, August 14th with retail outlets getting the devices on their shelves starting August 21st. To help entice buyers, Sprint says they are offering the most options for consumers and they are sweetening the deal with some special offers.
For customers who pick up on of Samsung’s newest devices using Sprint Lease or Sprint Easy Pay programs, the carrier will throw in the following:
- a guaranteed $200 minimum credit on working smartphones that are traded in;
- an early upgrade option at only 12 months;
- a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 if buyers activate the device with a 2-year service contract.
On a Sprint Lease, buyers can get the Galaxy S6 Edge+ for $30 per month for a 32GB model while the Galaxy Note 5 will go for $25 per month. The Sprint Easy Pay option is only $3 and $5 more per month for the devices respectively.

Ah Samsung! Yesterday’s launch of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ in London saw the Korean manufacturer announce a new phone and then field the same question from everyone in attendance: what about the Galaxy Note 5?

Samsung Gear S2 stars in a fashion shoot

Along with its new supersize smartphones, Samsung also gave us a little peek at its upcoming Gear S2 smartwatch yesterday. Although we are going to have to wait until IFA in September for the full unveiling, that isn’t stopping Samsung from showing the watch off, as it has appeared in a fashion shoot, where technology is the accessory of choice.
Rather than yesterday’s press shots, we can actually see the real life size of the smartwatch in the shoot and it doesn’t look quite as bulky as some other wearables out there. The circular design certainly helps it to look the part and it’s a notable step up from the rectangular design of the previous Gear smartwatches.
There isn’t just the Gear S2 in the extended photo shoot though, in fact it appears in only two pictures. You can also easily spot the newly announced Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ smartphones, along with a pair of Samsung Level headphones too. I don’t know much about fashion these days, but the gadgets certainly look rather stylish.
Samsung apparently teamed up with a few established names in the fashion industry to create this shoot and probably spent quite a bit of money in the process. Do you think it was worth it? Do you like the look of the new Gear S2 smartwatch?

It seems like forever that we’ve known these devices have been coming, but they are finally official – the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ have been announced, and they’re exactly the devices we expected them to be. Both giants and with pretty much identical hardware specs – except for the curvature of their displays, of course – these devices are Samsung‘s bet to stop Apple encroaching on their phablet territory. Check out how Samsung’s introduction videos for both the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ below:
