Yet more candid photos of the Samsung Galaxy F show it side-by-side with the Galaxy S5

samsung galaxy fLeaks regarding the Samsung Galaxy F, or previously known as the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, have significantly ramped up over the last few weeks, culminating most recently in some candid photos of the device showing its front and back. The latest leak places the Galaxy F side-by-side with the Galaxy S5 to give us a good comparison of how the devices differ. The Galaxy F is of course the device on the left, having a slightly larger screen (5.2 or 5.3-inches) and slightly more rounded corners than the Galaxy S5.

You will also notice that despite the larger, Quad HD screen, the Galaxy F actually manages to be slightly smaller than the Galaxy S5 thanks to thinner bezels. While the Galaxy F still isn’t a sure thing, this is definitely our best evidence that Samsung is developing a Quad HD device that will come in at a price point higher than the Galaxy S5. Not only with the screen and price be larger, but so will its hardware, allegedly housing a Snapdragon 805, 3GB RAM and a 16MP rear camera with OIS. Evleaks has previously suggested that the Galaxy F will be announced in September even though it almost looks ready to release now.

What do you think about how the Samsung Galaxy F looks side-by-side with the Galaxy S5? Let us know your opinion in the comments below.

Galaxy S5 Mini images and specs leak

GalaxyS5Mini-12

Ever since Samsung introduced its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone we’ve been wondering when the “mini” version of the device will come out. We haven’t seen any leaks of the phone, at least not legitimate ones. This leak will make up for it though.

By the looks of the phone you probably can’t tell it apart from its bigger sibling, but the hardware is where the two differentiate. Unlike the S5, the S5 Mini is rumored to feature a 4.5″ 720p Super AMOLED display along with a 1.4 GHz Samsung Exynos 3 (3470) Quad processor and 1.5GB of RAM. The phone is rumored to have 16GB of on-board storage and an 8MP main shooter along with a 2.1MP front facing one. Fingerprint reader and a heartrate sensor should also be a part of the package. The device should also get IP67 certification which would make it water and dust resistent like its bigger sibling.

This leak comes from SamMobile and there’s no mention of when the device might be announced. Samsung’s “Galaxy Premiere 2014” event on Thursday is always a possibility though.

Samsung orders less Galaxy S5 parts for Q3

Samsung Logo

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is a relatively new smartphone, which was released in April, and there are already reports that Samsung is cutting down on parts orders for its flagship phone.

According to supply chain sources in Taiwan, Samsung is concerned about the iPhone 6′s arrival and thus is going to cut its orders for Galaxy S5 parts by 25%. In Q2 21 million units of Galaxy S5 were ordered and for Q3 Samsung is planing “only” 15 million units. While this seems kind of reasonable we certainly didn’t expect it, but it may turn out to be a good bet.

Galaxy S5 is not the only Samsung smartphone that is going through this process, Samsung is going to do the same thing with the Galaxy S4, though different numbers are in play. 6 million units of S4 were ordered in Q2 and allegedly Samsung is going to cut that down to 5 million for Q3.

This might not be connected to the iPhone 6 though. It might have something to do with the leaks regarding Galaxy F, which should be Samsung’s premium smartphone made out of metal. This alleged smartphone is leaking like crazy lately so we wouldn’t be surprised, even though it has been leaking on and off for a while now.

What do you think of all this, which scenario is more likely?

Supply chain orders for the Samsung Galaxy S5 are down 25% in Q3

Samsung Galaxy S5The predecessor of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Galaxy S4, is most famous for smashing all sorts of “fastest sold” records including reaching 10 million units sold in 1 month and subsequently 40 million handsets sold after 6 months. It’s obviously been a hard act to follow for the Galaxy S5, though it has apparently beaten the Galaxy S4 in at least the category for the fastest to 10 million units sold. Unfortunately though, since that news, any sales news on the Galaxy S5 has been suspiciously absent from the public eye and the reason for that may be due to decreased demand. So much so, that Samsung is reportedly having to tell its supply chains to decrease supply by up to 25% in Q3 this year.

According to the report, 21 million units were ordered for this quarter (Q2) and only 15 million have been ordered for the upcoming quarter. Before we go on reading into this information, devices will always taper off in supply and demand as time goes on; that is to be expected. However, the Galaxy S5 has come under intense attack from all sides with generally superior equipped Android devices with overtly obvious innovations likely taking market share away from Samsung’s latest flagship (and that’s not even mentioning the effect Apple has on the smartphone market). This much has been made obvious by news that the LG G3 selling more per week in Korea than the Galaxy S5 was ever able to, probably another sign that Samsung is not quite as invincible as they might have fancied.

One way or another, when Samsung’s financials are eventually announced, we will know what kind of effect this new market has had on Galaxy S5 sales. What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy S5 having its supply decreased for Q3? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Turn your Galaxy Note 2 into an Android 4.4.2 Toting Galaxy Note 3 / Galaxy S5 Hybrid with ezKAT

Samsung Galaxy Notwe II ezKAT 2.0 Logo

Hardware has a lifespan.  That lifespan is something we try to prolong as long as possible. Nobody like spending money if there’s another way to prevents needing to do so. The manufacturers try to persuade us that we should simply scrap our old technology and upgrade to the latest and greatest and pour out a long list of enhancements that will make our life better.  Generally all they do add some pretty cool upgrades to their devices from the latest and greatest processor and camera optics to finger print scanners and larger batteries.  The question is; if you just upgraded your software to the latest and greatest versions, would that leap to a new device be significant enough to persuade you?  Maybe ezKAT for the Samsung Galaxy Note II will help you decide.

This is especially so for cell phone manufacturers who want us to upgrade our devices a maximum of every two years.  The normal cycle nowadays seems to be more around 12 months if we are lucky.

Enter the Android community!

So when the community gets together and takes the new features and ports them back into our older devices so they can last a little longer, we all smile and say a big thanks.

Head over to XDA-Developers and you’ll find an overwhelming resource of updates, modifications and tweaks for almost every phone on the planet.

I spend half my life on XDA and that’s where my latest upgrade to my aging Samsung Galaxy Note II came from.

My Note II is now more of a hybrid of Samsung Galaxy Note II and Samsung Galaxy S5 with features galore.  It’s running Android 4.4.2 Kitkat and it has a completely new lease of life that makes me question upgrading my faithful Note II.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy Note II from AT&T, T-Mobile or the N7105, then you should read on.

Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT Home Screen

Where did this all come from you may ask?  well, XDA-Developers is simply a hub of information and only exists due to the rapidly expanding community of developers and users.  The developer of this particular firmware is eZdubzitmk4.  One of the top developers I’ve had the pleasure of following.  his work is meticulous and the support he provides is as good as it can possibly get.

eZdubzitmk4 has put together a custom ROM by the name of ezKAT which is based off the official n7105 Android kitkat 4.4.2 release.  He took the base, various applications, settings and tweaks from the Samsung Galaxy Note III and the Samsung Galaxy S5 and combines them into this piece of art.

When release it had the following feature list:

  • All n3 features including Air Command
  • S5 apps including settings
  • Quick reply text option. (Go to sms settings then notifications)
  • Status bar gradient colors, clock mods, gesture controls, and battery bar (SEE THIS THREAD FOR INSTRUCTIONS)
  • Clock mods – see above link
  • Network Speed
  • CPU status in notification pulldown
  • MIUI battery bar customizable
  • Some tweaks for speed, more to come also
  • Added lots of themes for the launcher, already installed

The ROM is currently at version 2.0 and a 2.5 release is due any day.

Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT Air Command

This is only the beginning as more and more add-ons and tweaks are provided in the thread on XDA and as downloads added by eZdubzitmk4 himself.

Installation is fairly simple with only a couple of learnt lessons to deal with, but once you’re done, you’ll never look back.

You need to be flash savvy to perform any procedures like this.  Your phone needs to be rooted and have a modified recovery installed.  You can find lots of help on XDA to achieve this.

All the files required for this firmware and add-ons can be found on XDA.  Most of the main ones can be found in the ezKAT thread.

The steps for installation are: ( Sorry if I missed anything )

  • Download the ROM ZIP and other suggested files and copy them your SD card
  • Reboot into your recovery program.
  • Backup your existing ROM.
  • Wipe everything you can.  Dalvik, Cache, System, Data, etc.  Multiple wipes can sometimes help you out too.
  • Flash the ROM ZIP file using your recovery program.
  • Flash the provided Keyboard Fix OR Galaxy S5 Keyboard
  • Flash a new modem image if required.
  • Reboot your phone and let it boot completely.
  • At this point, you may or may not have a keyboard to type with.  It’s possible you’ll only have Google Voice Typing available.
If you only have Google Voice Typing, skip through the initial setup, as you won’t be able to sign into your WiFi.
Once you’re completely booted, go into Settings –> Language and Input and enable a real keyboard.
  • Now you need to go and set up your APN to get connected to your mobile network.
  • Reboot into recovery once more and flash Super SU 1.99 to give you root access.

If you encounter any other issues along the way, be sure to go check in at the thread on XDA and you’ll normally find answers to most of the questions and problems that you may encounter.

Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT About

Here are the recommended AT&T LTE APN Settings:

  • Name: ATT Phone
  • APN: Phone
  • MMSC: HTTP://mmsc.mobile.att.net
  • MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
  • MMS port: 80
  • MCC: 310
  • MNC: 410
  • APN type: default,mms,supl
  • APN protocol: IPv4
  • Enable/disable APN: APN enabled
  • Bearer: Unspecified

If you have issues connecting to your Mobile network, you can find plenty of other resources around for setting up your APN.

Now your phone is running Android 4.4.2 Kitkat in the form of ezKAT and you’ll have awesome performance and battery life and your phone will feel like it has a new lease on life.

Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT Battery Life

Once your up and running, head back to XDA and check out all the add-ons you can flash on top of ezKAT and continue to personalize your phone just the way you want it.  There are other S5 applications you can install, one of my favorites being the Galaxy S5 email client.  It has all the whiz bang new features like being able to slide your emails to delete them.

The possibilities are endless.  There’s also a new kernel from AGNi that solves various issues with some devices not getting good or any Wifi at all.  The other big added benefit is even more battery life and tweaking.

Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT QuickToggles   Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT Settings   Samsung Galaxy Note2 ezKAT Home Screen Lock ScreenThere are also many caveats that go along with customizing your phone with new Recovery images, Firmware and Kernels.  All I can say is “Read, read and read again”.  Make sure you’re clear about the path you want to take. Make sure you understand what you are doing.  Doing some of these steps incorrectly can result in bricked devices that are no good for anything, but that doesn’t happen very often anymore.

If you’re not sure about something and you can’t find an answer reading through the forums, ask questions and wait for the answers.  The support you’ll get from the community and from eZdubzitmk4, the developer of this ROM, is nothing short of outstanding.  You’ll get more support from the community and these guys than you ever will get from your carriers.

Always remember that these guys and gals do this for free and out of the passion for the community.  Remember to thank people and even donate a few dollars to buy them a beer if you really love their work.

The LG G3 is outselling the Samsung Galaxy S5 in Korea

LG G3 is outselling the Samsung Galaxy S5To nobody’s surprise, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has sold like hotcakes since it’s launch and shows no signs of abating anytime soon. However, while we expect sales figures of the Galaxy S5 to vary region to region, we never expected to hear that the LG G3 is outselling the Samsung Galaxy S5 in Korea. LG‘s flagship device is one of the first with a Quad HD display, so it’s not really a surprise to hear the large interest for the device. What is a surprise is that the LG G3 is selling between 25,000-30,000 units per day compared to the Galaxy S5′s daily sales which are somewhere closer to 7,000-8,000 units per day.

While this isn’t immediately indicative of the total number of devices sold for either smartphone, it’s nonetheless astonishing that the LG G3 is outselling the Galaxy S5 on some level. This is thanks in large part to LG’s strategy to launch flagship devices biannually to try and capitalize on technological advances during the year, and it looks like it has paid off. The 5.5-inch Quad HD smartphone is sitting pretty at the top of the Android food chain right now, but we’ll just have to see for how long.

Samsung released 3 new Galaxy S5 ads and they’re kind of neat

galaxy s5 ads_____

Samsung did a really good job in the ads department this time. Under the hashtag #Expect more they introduced 3 new ads and as we said, they’re not half bad.

All 3 of them last around 30 seconds touting different features of the Galaxy S5. The first one is featuring a girl advertising a private mode feature, the one after that a guy touting Galaxy S5′s water resistance and the last one is advertising S5′s Ultra Power Saving Mode feature in a rather funny way.

We don’t want to spoil the ads too much. Make sure to see them for yourself and tell us what you think.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime (SM-906S) gets shipped to India for Testing

Samsung Galaxy S5 PrimeOne of the most elusive devices of the last few weeks has been the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, a rumoured device that allegedly updates the original Galaxy S5 with a 5.2-inch 2K resolution display and possibly a new processor. Despite a leaked video, nothing about the leaks surrounding the device seems to be particularly conclusive, and the latest news isn’t likely to clear anything up specification-wise. According to Zauba’s database, a SM-906S, apparently the S5 Prime in South Korea, has been shipped to India for testing.

It’s also notable in this listing that the screen size is quoted as 5.1-inches, again going against the rumours of a 5.2-inch screen. The only other detail we can glean from this listing is the price attached to this test unit, which is apparently Rs. 21,245, or about $362 USD. Is this the real market price? Probably not, but at least we know that there is a new Galaxy S5 device coming to us soon. And with the LG G3 release coming up in just a few days, it’s likely we’ll be hearing more about Samsung‘s answer in the near future.
