Cyanogen shows off new boot animation
We have been hearing for some time now that Cyanogen was working on an Android replacement without accessing Google Services. Now, the Cyanogen team has published a video on YouTube showing off their unique boot animation that will come along with the new Cyanogen OS update.
The new boot animation animation is a far cry from the flashy one at present as Cyanogen seems to have taken a cleaner and simpler approach this time. Previously it was leaked that the team at Cyanogen was preparing a new email client for Cyanogen OS 12.
Cyanogen is expected to throw away some more teasers with the impending OS 12 upgrade just weeks away. Within weeks, we will see the OnePlus One and the Micromax Yureka receiving Cyanogen OS 12 upgrade.
Rumour mills had earlier suggested that Microsoft was set to become a minor investor in Cyanogen in the latest rounds of funding but later the whole story was debunked. Parallelly Cyanogen’s CEO had said: “We want to take Android from Google.” The statement did not mean that Cyanogen was developing a Microsoft centric OS, clarified Cyanogen adding that it only wanted to allow companies to be able to use Android without having to adhere to Google’s tricky usage licenses and agreements.

OnePlus One will soon make its way to all European countries

While the OnePlus One has already been available in multiple European countries for some time now, the company is finally expanding its reach to the rest of Europe. OnePlus has just announced that the One will soon be available in 16 additional countries, including:
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Greece
- Hungary
- Ireland
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Poland
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
Alongside the launch of the handset in these countries, OnePlus is holding special promotional events to make more users aware that they can now buy the device. Events will be held in Warsaw on March 9th, Prague on March 10th and in Budapest on March 12th. Specific launch dates and prices have yet to be announced, but OnePlus assures us that they’ll provide that information shortly.
Even a year after the device has been available, the One still offers up some great specifications for the price (that is, if you can buy one). The device has a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, either 16 or 64GB of on-board storage, and a big 3100mAh battery. If you’d like some more information on the OnePlus One, take a look at our full review here.
OnePlus to venture into a new product category next month
According to OnePlus founder Carl Pei, the company will venture into a new product category next month. The manufacturer hasn’t revealed as to what this device could be, but has ruled out a tablet or a smartwatch being shown off next month.
This leaves us open to something like a fitness wearable or perhaps a set of audio equipment. Much is left to our imagination at the moment and it seems like we’ll have to wait until April to find out more.
It’s unlikely that he’s talking about the OnePlus Two here as the smartphone isn’t expected to break cover until mid 2015. Also, a smartphone doesn’t constitute a new product category, so we’re sure the company has some other plans in mind.

OnePlus One to get CM12S and OxygenOS ROM by March
The co-founder of OnePlus, Carl Pei has announced that the OnePlus One will receive the CyanogenMod 12S update sometime in March. He also mentioned that users willing to flash the Android 5.0 based OxygenOS ROM can do so at around the same time. Carl Pei gave out the following information while responding to a user query on Twitter.
CyanogenMod 12S updates will be available as an OTA to existing devices (with the exception of Indian units). Others will have to rely on OxygenOS which won’t be available as an OTA and will require users to manually flash the ROM.
Since Cyanogen is yet to issue a stable release of CM12S, it’s out of OnePlus’ hand to issue the update. As for the OxygenOS ROM, it is said that the team is hard at work to perfect the ROM before it is made available for public use. The alpha version of the ROM has been made available by OnePlus sometime ago.

OnePlus One StyleSwap Bamboo Cover installation and review
brightcove.createExperiences();
One of the highly anticipated features announced with the OnePlus One was the ability to swap out the standard back cover with covers made of a variety of materials, ranging from bamboo to denim. Unfortunately, OnePlus had to cancel these StyleSwap covers due to production issues, but the Bamboo cover, in limited numbers, was made available to consumers. I was lucky enough to pick one up, and today, we’ll be taking a look at the installation process in this quick review of the OnePlus One StyleSwap Bamboo Cover!

Unboxing this accessory, the cover comes in typical OnePlus packaging, in a white and red box. The cover has all the appropriate cutouts necessary, including one for the SIM card slot, that is a separate piece that needs to be fixed after the cover is installed. Included in the box is an installation guide to help you replace the covers, as well as the tool required to do it, an instrument that looks like a guitar pick, that makes separating the back cover from the phone easy. Two SIM card trays are also available, one suited for a microSIM card, and another that can be used with nanoSIMs, which is a very welcome addition, since I previously had to use an adapter to use my nanoSIM cards with the OnePlus One.

Another tool that is required to get started is the SIM tray removal tool, that should come with the device itself when you first got it. Removing the SIM tray is the first thing you have to do before getting started on removing the back cover. I used the blue tool that comes with the accessory to pop out all the clips that hold the back cover in place, but to get started, you can use a headphone jack to pop out the first notch at the top of the phone. Removing the sandstone black cover was quite difficult, but the tool did make it easier than it might have been with other generic instruments.

Taking a look at the two covers after removing the sandstone cover, the first thing you’ll notice is that, while the sandstone material makes its way around to the sides, in the case of the Bamboo cover, the lining is a plastic material, with the insides of both also made of plastic.

Installing the bamboo cover involves just snapping it into place. Pop in the replacement SIM tray available, and you’re good to go. Bamboo back covers are my favorites, and for now, only the Moto X (2014) and the OnePlus One are the devices that allow for this option, which is one of the big reasons why the former is what I use as my daily driver. The Bamboo StyleSwap cover costs $50, but that isn’t that big a price to pay, given that you can dramatically change the look of the device from the standard Sandstone Black.

The handling experience with the phone remains largely unchanged, even if the grip feels a little bit better, but not by much, with the Sandstone version, especially when using the device with one hand. As far as the look goes, the plastic lining around that separates the bamboo from the frame of the phone is a slightly jarring. You do get the look of a three-toned phone though, when you move from the bamboo to the plastic, and then to the metal frame that goes around the front of the device. All said and done, it still looks quite exquisite.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the change in material doesn’t affect it any way, with NFC, Bluetooth and mobile network connectivity as strong as you would expect.

So there you have it – a quick look at the Bamboo StyleSwap cover for the OnePlus One! You may require an invite to be able to buy the cover, but occasionally, you will be able to buy it for $49.99 from the OnePlus Accessories page. If you have a OnePlus One and you’re hoping to change up the look of your smartphone, this Bamboo cover is certainly a great way to go.b
Here’s a neat trick which lets you capture 50MP photos from your OnePlus One
The OnePlus One is a pretty stellar device for the cost that it’s available for. And a new camera mod lets users get even more out of the device with minimal work. Thanks to a bunch of keen developers over at the XDA Forums, the OnePlus One can now take 50-megapixel photos using image interpolation tech.
This was debuted in the Oppo Find 7 and Find 7a, so it’s a feature from Oppo’s proprietary Color OS ROM. These developers have simply ported the app to work with CyanogenMod 11S, thus making it compatible with the OnePlus One.
In addition to offering 50-megapixel photos, the camera app also comes with features like HDR video recording, slow-mo video, burst shot and a lot more. So if you own a OnePlus One and would like to get more out of your smartphone’s camera, head over to the link below for more details.

OnePlus announces open sales for every Tuesday
The OnePlus has been up for sale for just over half a year now, but it is still a hard phone to get. The main way to purchase a OnePlus One has always been through its highly criticized invite system, but with more and more invites going out monthly, it has become easier. Today, OnePlus announced that the OnePlus One will be available to purchase every Tuesday from now on.
Starting tomorrow, OnePlus will open up sales for the One for 24 hours starting at 12:00 am Pacific time (8:00 am London time) and will continue on every Tuesday thereafter. Both the 16 GB Silk White and 64 GB Sandstone Black models will be available for purchase, with no invite.
Although the device will be available every Tuesday starting at midnight Pacific time, the invite system will still be one of the main ways to get the device. That means if you have an invite, you can use it whenever you want. Users will still be able to receive and share invites.
