Nexus 9 Magic Cover and Keyboard Folio Case Review
Google’s latest Nexus tablet, the Nexus 9, has been around for a while now, and Google has always been great about supporting their devices with official accessories. Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at two of the official protective cases and covers available for the Nexus 9, the Magic Cover and the Keyboard Folio Case!
Magic Cover

Starting with the Magic Cover, it is flat rectangular magnetic attachment cover that can be attached to the front or the back of the tablet. When attached to cover and protect the display, the cover also supports automatic wake and sleep functionality, with all you needing to do is to open or close the cover.

The magnets do a great job of holding the cover in place, but an important point to mention is the fact that the cover features two different materials on both sides that adhere differently to the screen. One side has a hard rubber-like material that offers more grip, and holds itself to the screen a lot better. On the other side is a softer, more suede-like material, that makes the cover more prone to sliding around, which does create issues with the cover shifting out of place.

What makes the Magic Cover unique is its origami-inspired design, that lets you fold the cover into a stand, with one option allowing for a steep angle, which is perfect for media consumption, while another allows for a much shallower angle, which is useful for pretty much anything else you might be using the tablet for. If you have the case on the back, it will cover up the camera, but a nice touch is the fact that just raising the corner flap will directly start the camera, allowing you to take a quick shot.
The Magic Cover is available directly from the Google Play Store for $39.99, or at a slightly discounted price from Amazon, with the available color options including black, limestone, coral amethyst, and mint indigo.
Keyboard Folio Case

The Keyboard Folio Case not only offers a lot more protection for your Nexus 9 when compared to the Magic Cover, but also comes with an attached bluetooth keyboard to enhance your productivity. Like the Magic Cover, it uses magnets to latch on to the tablet, and the material on the outside is soft and offers a lot of grip, which feels great and in the hand, and makes it easy to hold.

As mentioned, the keyboard pairs with the Nexus 9 via Bluetooth, and establishing the connection is simple, and doesn’t take too much time. The typing experience is quite good, with their being no latency whatsoever while I used to type in Google Docs or to reply to email or instant messages. It is a bit cramped, because after all, it is a keyboard made for a device with a 9-inch display, but the overall experience has been pleasant so far.

Despite its compact nature, the keyboard also includes some extremely useful shortcuts, like a dedicated emoticon key, and a search button that lets you conduct searches no matter where you are in the OS. Other shortcuts including tapping Alt and Tab at the same time to open the Overview screen, along with pressing the search button and enter simultaneously to quickly take you back to the main home screen. The keyboard can also be used to navigate around the OS, but the process is rather slow, and using the touchscreen is still the better option.

The keyboard can be charged via microUSB, but you may not have to charge it often, with Google claiming that with up to 2 hours of usage a day, the keyboard can last for as long as 5 months on a single charge. Testing this out hasn’t been possible since I’ve only had the case for a few weeks, but I haven’t had to charge the keyboard yet following the first time after receiving it.
The Keyboard Folio Case for the Nexus 9 is priced at $129.99, available directly from the Google Play Store, or at slightly discounted price from Amazon, with the only color option being black.
SEE ALSO: Nexus 9 Review

As is the case with most official accessories, the Magic Cover and the Keyboard Folio Case are at the higher end of the price spectrum. That said, the Magic Cover is certainly a very unique take on the traditional smart covers we’ve seen so far, and offers some nice functionality, and the Keyboard Folio Case provides a great typing experience with an impressive battery life, along with good protection for the tablet. While expensive, both these cases are definitely reliable, high quality products.
HTC Nexus 9 now offered in Sand color option

Just a quick note for those of you who were considering picking up the HTC Nexus 9. You can now pick the latest Google tablet up in a new color option, Sand.
Head to the Google Play Store today and you’ll find the device offered in the 32GB Wi-Fi configuration. As of right now there’s no LTE option or 16GB storage capacity to choose from.
Powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Nexus 9 boasts a 8.9-inch 2048×1536 display, 2.3GHz dual-core 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, 2GB RAM, and 6700mAh battery. Over on the camera front we find an 8-megapixel rear and 1.6-megapixel front-facing combination.

You can now get the Nexus 9 in ‘Sand Gold’ from the Play Store
The HTC Nexus 9 was originally announced in three color configurations – Lunar White, Indigo Black and Sand. While the first two color variants have been extensively available for purchase, the third one has eluded the market for quite some time now. However, that changes today with the Play Store finally listing the Sand version of the Nexus 9.
As of now, this particular color variant is only available in the 32GB WiFi-only configuration, so if you wanted a 16GB WiFi or 32GB LTE model, you’re out of luck.
It is likely that Google is currently testing the waters with this variant by only releasing it in one configuration, so we can’t write off the launch of other variants somewhere down the line. Pricing for the tablet remains stagnant at $479, so nothing has changed in that regard.
If you’ve been wanting to get your hands on a gold finish Nexus 9, your wait has finally ended. Head over to the Play Store from the link provided below for more details.

Sand version of Nexus 9 available for first time in Play Store (32GB only)

When the Nexus 9 first landed in the Play Store on November 3, the Sand version was listed as “Coming soon.” It took Google more than two months to make “soon” happen, but now the tan Nexus 9 can finally be yours.
Only the 32GB storage option of the Sand Nexus 9 is available as of right now, with a price tag of $479 and a 1 to 2-day shipping window. This goes for the WiFi-only model, as the LTE-enabled model is still only available in Indigo Black.
The Sand Nexus 9 features a light brown back and black margins, while the front is black, like on all versions. All the differences are skin-deep: inside the device ticks the same Tegra K1 CPU clocked at 2.3GHz, backed by 2GB of RAM and a 6700mAh battery, with a nice 2048×1536 LDC display on the front. There’s no telling when, if ever, Google will release the 16GB Sand model in the Play Store, though considering the lack of expandable storage, going the 32GB route is a sound investment anyway.

HTC’s Jeff Gordon promises the “best ever” product lineup for 2015, lots of surprises

With 2014 just behind us and CE just days away, it’s no small claim to say that the tech world is waiting for the event with eager eyes. HTC is no stranger to making headlines, and if Jeff Gordon, the company’s Senior Global Online Communication Manager has anything to say (which he does), the year-at-large might be something special.
In a series of Tweets today, Gordon minced no words in claiming that 2015 will see the best product line-up in the company’s history, using such phrases as “blow your mind” and promising “some huge surprises.” Take a look:
HTC's 2015 roadmap will be our best ever–with some huge surprises that will blow you away.
— Jeff Gordon (@urbanstrata) December 31, 2014
It’s important to note that Mr. Gordon didn’t confirm anything specific for CES 2015, though he did make reference to it by noting many companies make product announcements on the 5th, even though the show doesn’t actually open until the 6th.
There have been many rumors and purported leaks circulating around the Internet recently, including continuous mentioning of the HTC Hima, which is largely believed to be the follow-up to last year’s One M8, a device that not only turned heads, but actually made the jump over to Windows Phone as well, perhaps a first for the mobile market.
HTC is also stated to release a sequel to its RE handheld recording device, though it’s unknown if the 2015 variant will feature the same periscope-esque inspiration. In the tablet world, there has been talk of the Taiwanese company offering a non-Nexus “Nexus 9″, which could mean a similar speced piece of hardware with HTC’s signature premium build quality.
The most solid piece of evidence about something interesting coming from HTC next week is this teaser for an upcoming Desire phone.

As Gordon also reminded his followers that HTC is back in (the) black, this year will be a very important one to determine how long the balance sheet remains so. What kind of surprises would you like to see from HTC this year?
