Disney Movies Anywhere is coming to Amazon and Microsoft stores
Previously, Disney Movies Anywhere could only link to an iTunes account, but today it will now connect with Amazon Instant Video and Microsoft Video. Also, there are new Disney apps for Xbox 360 and Amazon’s Fire TV. Plus, next week on the 15th, it’s launching on Roku and Android TV.
Any movie you have unlocked from Guardians of the Galaxy to Avengers: Age of Ultron will be viewable on any of those services. Once your account is connected to them, you can then buy whatever movie you would like, and it will unlock the service on others, as powered by Disney’s KeyChest setup. If you link your account to a streaming device, Disney will even give you a free copy of Monsters Inc.

Update to Minecraft: Pocket Edition drops, adds cross-platform multiplayer
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Sometimes it just boggles the mind how popular the video game Minecraft has become. Other times, it’s 4am and I’m wondering why I bothered to dig all the way down to the bedrock in search of diamonds for the 50 millionth time. Minecraft is a largely multiplayer game, but we’ve been restricted to playing with players on the same platform – no more. An update to Minecraft: Pocket Edition and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta means that players on PC, Android, iOS, and Windows Phone will be able to play together on a local network. It’s not quite true cross-platform multiplayer on hosted servers, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
This latest update brings Minecraft: Pocket Edition up to version 0.12.1 – why they never bothered to bring it up to version 1.0, we’ll never know. Cross-platform multiplayer isn’t all that Minecraft: Pocket Edition is getting – new touch controls, controller support and controller mapping options have also been added which should make quite a few people happy. The ability to finally sprint and crawl have also been added to the Pocket Edition. For more info about the update, be sure to check out Microsoft’s post about it here.

Playdate: We’re going the distance in ‘Forza Motorsport 6’
We’re going for speed. We’re (not) all alone in a time of need. All ’90s song references aside, today we’re going to race through two hours of the latest entry in Microsoft’s racing simulation, Forza Motorsport 6. What’s that mean for you? Well, you’ll be able to watch me careen around race tracks, cause massive amounts of vehicular carnage and generally turn my Drivatar into everyone’s worst nightmare. If that sounds like your type of party, come back here at 6 pm ET / 3 pm PT to witness the glory (Tim’s feeble racing skills) and the hilarity (Sean Buckley’s amazement at said driving skills).
In the meantime, if you’ve already picked your copy of the game up, I’ve designed a few simple Engadget liveries and logos in the paintshop that you can download (or even an Audi Formula E car, a Tesla Model S and a bitchin’ Ford Focus), and you can totally emblazon your ride with your favorite tech site’s colors. Of course, you can always check out Playdate at Twitch.tv/joystiq or the Engadget Gaming homepage as well. Maybe — just maybe — Tim will talk about drinking antifreeze again.

Microsoft and Dell team up to put Surface tablets in your workplace
Microsoft really wants Surface tablets to be mainstays of the corporate crowd, and it just formed a partnership with Dell to help make this happen. The Surface Enterprise Initiative will see Dell selling both Surface Pro tablets and their accessories through its commercial sales channels, eventually including its website — yes, you’ll see Microsoft slates available alongside Dell’s own Venue Pros. Those machines will get full Dell support, too. The effort will only be available in the US and Canada when it kicks off in early October, but it’ll spread to the Surface’s 28 remaining business-friendly regions by early 2016.
While it seems odd for Dell to sell computers that it doesn’t make, it’s easy to see why this move makes sense for both sides. Apple has been doing a lot to put more iPads in offices, including its high-profile deals with Cisco and IBM as well as team-ups with app developers. This alliance gives Surfaces (and by extension, Windows 10) a foot in the door at companies that might not have even considered Windows tablets in the past. Dell, meanwhile, gets cushy deployment and support contracts without having to build the associated hardware. It’s too soon to know if this will be successful, but you shouldn’t be surprised if a company-issued Surface Pro lands on your desk in the months ahead.

‘Minecraft’ players on Windows 10 and mobile can now build together
Minecraft offers wondrous worlds for solo adventurers, but it also gives groups the perfect canvas to build on and break together. With this in mind, developer Mojang is making it easier to host your friends with cross-platform play between Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition and Minecraft: Pocket Edition. Up to five players can now join the same session on a local network with their PC, iOS, Android or Windows Phone devices. And, if you need another reason to try Microsoft’s new OS, the Windows 10 version has also been updated with five-person online multiplayer over Xbox Live. Microsoft has put a ton of work into its new Xbox app for Windows 10 — it’s desperate to prove the OS is a worthy upgrade for PC gamers — and this could make it easier for beginners to set up collaborative builds.
If your little one is glued to their phone or tablet, however, Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been spruced up a little too. The touch controls have been revamped and Mojang is adding controller support with a dedicated button mapping screen. Better yet, there’s now enhanced weather effects, including directional rain, the ability to sneak and sprint, and access to the spooky “Nether” dimension. It’s easy to forget just how popular Minecraft has become; as Mojang’s Minecon convention showed this year, the community has, in fact, never been stronger, making each iterative update just as important as the last.

Microsoft takes on the US government over data held overseas
Do you think that America’s law enforcement agencies should have free access to the emails of your friends over in Ireland? It’s the question that an appeals court is being asked to consider in a matter that has serious consequences for everyone in the world. The issue began when drug enforcement officials wanted to access to messages that were stored on a Microsoft server in Dublin. As far as Microsoft was concerned, that was a matter for the Irish government, but the g-people tried to hold the company’s US arm accountable. Disturbingly, the US won the first two legal challenges, and now New York’s 2nd circuit is about to hear to the appeal on behalf of Microsoft, with some cheering on from the rest of the technology industry.
As Reuters reports, the court will be asked to decide if Microsoft in the US had control and access to the emails, rather than where they were housed at the time. The problem is that whatever the result, it’s going to wind up to be problematic for both Microsoft and the tech industry as a whole. If the company wins, then it’s likely to be attacked by numerous law enforcement agencies as they say that Satya Nadella is personally endorsing the actions of criminals. If it loses, however, it’s likely to outrage its global customers who are rightly reluctant to see their private data handed over to the government. Not to mention the geopolitical element, since the US will effectively give itself permission to look at private information on overseas citizens. It probably won’t be able to complain if foreign governments do the same thing in return, since that’d smack of double standards.

Twitter for Windows 10 gets a ‘trending stories’ page
Windows 10 just got a new Twitter app, and while it did get one interesting new feature, other changes merely brought it up -to-date with other versions. For instance, the new app (version 4.1.0) now allows Windows 10 users to quote tweets without wasting valuable characters, a feature that’s been around on the web and mobile apps since April. It did get one interesting new feature called “happening now” that shows popular Twitter stories in a grid (above). However, that may need some tweaking, as the stories I saw didn’t reflect my interests whatsoever.
The new version still hasn’t arrived to Windows 10 mobile, which isn’t too surprising since the OS is still in beta. When it does launch officially, however, apps like Twitter are supposed to be “universal” and run across all Windows 10 platforms. Since developers are more inclined to create apps for the huge numbers of Windows 10 desktop users, Microsoft is hoping that the mobile OS will also get reasonably up-to-date software — the lack of which is its biggest weakness.

Amazon and Microsoft’s stores connect to Disney Movies Anywhere
When Disney launched its Movies Anywhere app early last year it could only plug digital copies into your iTunes account, but today it linked up with Amazon Instant Video and Microsoft Video. Besides new Disney apps for Xbox 360 and Amazon’s Fire TV platform, next week on the 15th it’s launching on Roku and Android TV. That means any movie you’ve unlocked with Disney (like Big Hero 6, Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers: Age of Ultron) is viewable through any of those services, as well as Google Play and Vudu. Once you connect them to your account, buying a copy on one service unlocks the movie on others, as powered by Disney’s KeyChest setup. More importantly, Amazon and Microsoft don’t support Ultraviolet digital copies, which may swing the balance of power just as Ultra HD Blu-ray arrives on the scene. Wherever you stream your movies, linking your accounts may be worthwhile since Disney will toss a free copy of Monsters Inc. into your account for doing so.

Play ‘Evolve’ free this weekend on Xbox One and PC
Wondering what to do with your three day weekend? Turtle Rock Studios is hoping you’ll (re)visit its co-op shooter Evolve, courtesy of a few days of free access on Xbox One and PC. Even if you already own it, it may be time to knock the dust off because besides the flood of players, it’s unlocking all the DLC for you to try, and just permanently unlocked a new monster, the Meteor Goliath. Thanks to its 4-on-1, primarily multiplayer setup, having a strong base of online players is key, and this is one way to try and refresh the ranks. The free preview is already under way, wrapping up on the 7th, at 11:59PM PT on Xbox One, and at 10AM PT on PC.
