LG G4 community offering over $2000 to anyone who can achieve root and bootloader unlock

lg-g4-color-comparison-aa-9-of-11

Time to sharpen your coding and tinkering skills. LG G4 users have assembled and managed to collect over $2000 USD. The purpose? Giving it all to the first person to come up with a new root method or full bootloader unlock for LG’s latest flagship smartphone.

The original thread has been posted at the XDA Developers forums, where an onslaught of LG G4 owners have shown their interest in finding a way to tinker with their smartphones. The included list shows dozens of participants cooperating with whatever amount of money they can share.

lg g4 first look aa (22 of 32)

More specifically, the group is looking to get a root method or full bootloader unlock for the Verizon and AT&T LG G4 iterations. These are usually the hardest to crack, given the carriers’ tighter hold on hardware/software control.

There are two separate bounties: one for root and the other for unlocking the bootloader. Both would ultimately achieve a similar goal, so whichever bounty is taken first will dictate the qualifying winner. Sadly, the bootloader unlock bounty is a bit lower at $1485 (at this point). On the other hand, achieving full root and recovery alone will get you a generous $2205.

dollars money

In order to get your cash reward, you have to be the first to create or find a method, make a post in the thread proving your procedure works and provide step-by-step instructions to your solution. In addition, a separate user has to follow the same instructions and confirm their validity. When all of that is out of the way, the discoverer can claim his bounty via PM from donators. Yes, it will be a hassle, but this is 2 grand we are talking about!

Interested? You can go to the original threads and learn all the details. And if you are an LG G4 owner trying to get a new root method, you can also pitch in for the cause there. Are any of you going to test your skills with this? Will you be donating?

LG loves its new phone, the LG G4 – especially the camera. And with good reason too as the G4 arguably has one of the best, if not the best, cameras available on the smartphone market right now. LG has already strapped the LG G4 to a drone to capture some cool footage, but now they’ve gotten the help of YouTube royalty to help them plug the phone’s camera some more – in particular, we’re interested in how LG got Dude Perfect to help advertise the LG G4. If you’re not familiar of Dude Perfect, they’re pretty much the YouTube kings of trick shots – basketball, ping pong balls, paper planes; they do it all. This time, in a video which includes lacrosse god, Paul Rabil, the Dude Perfect team take the time to run through a few of the LG G4’s features – check it out:

As you can see from the video, the plethora of professional photography settings that LG has included in the LG G4 do lend themselves to video makers who can make use of them, not unlike Dude Perfect. We will note that the new OIS that LG has been touting doesn’t appear to negate much of the shaky cam that goes on during the video, but hey, if you’re expecting no shaking either, you’re kidding yourself. Definitely a neat way to advertise your new phone – keep it coming LG.

What do you think of LG getting Dude Perfect to help advertise the LG G4? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

LG G4 reportedly under-performing in South Korea

lg-g4-problems-fixes-5

The rather impressive LG G4 has had three months on the market in South Korea in which to win over consumers, but the smartphone does not appear to be living up to its sales expectations. The latest report from Korea states that just over 240,000 units have sold in the country since launch.

While not a terrible figure itself, it falls well short of industry estimates and comes at a time when LG had been hoping to boost yearly smartphone sales. The company set itself a lofty target of 70 million smartphones for 2015, which is now in doubt if the company is struggling with domestic sales. For comparison, Samsung has sold over 1.3 million Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets in South Korea so far. LG wasn’t aiming for quite these levels, but this is a rather large gap between the two.

This is not the first time that we have heard mutterings about an underwhelming G4 performance. Last month analysts cut LG’s Q2 earnings expectations because second quarter shipments were set to come in at just under 2.5 million units, again missing its target. You can’t help but wonder if the G4 is suffering from a lack of demand worldwide.

Given the high quality of LG’s latest flagship, the exact cause of the disappointing sales figures is difficult to pinpoint. Some have suggested that the impressive and more unique looking Galaxy S6 Edge is pinching much of the high-end demand. It is also possible that some customers are waiting to see what LG had planned for its second flagship later in the year or that some simply don’t see the G4 as a big enough upgrade over the G3.

Of course, this is not to say that LG’s wider smartphone range is suffering from the same problems. But without its flagship putting in a big performance, it is looking increasingly unlikely that LG will miss its 70 million smartphones target this year.

ZTE Axon vs LG G4 quick look

We’re in New York to see ZTE’s new and highly ambitious offering for the US market, the Axon. Combining a striking all-metal design with some of the finest specifications on the market, the Axon deserves your attention in and of itself. But ZTE seems decided to make this device a homerun, which may explain the Axon’s affordable price tag: $500 unlocked.

The Android arena is nothing if not competitive, so can a newcomer (even one with the massive might of ZTE at its back) take on heavyweights like Samsung Galaxy S6, HTC One M9, or the LG G4?

In this quick comparison, we look at how the ZTE Axon compares to LG’s leather-bound G4. Let’s get right to it!

ZTE AXON Phone vs LG G4 Quick Look-2

Build quality and design

Two premium looking phones go toe to toe, but the similarities end there. The ZTE Axon stands out through its metallic unibody, which sports a striking design element in the styling of the frontal grilles and the camera panel on the back. While the Axon is relatively attractive, it’s not exactly an original appearance, at least not if you’re familiar with HTC’s 2011 flagship, the One X. The Axon seems to combine the One X’ general shape and grille placement with the metallic construction of the One M series. It’s up to you how you feel about it, but overall we think ZTE’s designers did a solid job.

ZTE AXON Phone Hands On-14

On the other hand, we have the G4, with its smooth curves and natural leather backing. While some may find the prominent seam dividing the back of the G4 a bit gaudy, there’s no denying that leather is a premium material that just oozes personality. If the leather doesn’t catch your eye, the rear-mounted power button and volume keys just might. It’s a distinctive design element that offers some distinct functionality as well, as having the buttons on the back makes it easier to maneuver the 5.5-inch device.

LG G4 hands on-39

Speaking of size, both phones have 5.5-inch displays, but due to its front grilles and generally larger bezels, the Axon is visibly larger than G4’s compact flagship. That’s not to say the Axon is unwieldy, though at 175 grams it’s not a light phone either.

ZTE AXON Phone vs LG G4 Quick Look-5

The Axon features ZTE’s well-known “circle” home button, flanked by two capacitive keys, while the G4 uses on-screen navigation. One advantage that the Axon offers is the presence of a dedicated shutter button on the side, which is something that few Android smartphones feature these days.

Display

Both competitors offer 5.5-inch screens of Quad HD resolutions, resulting in pixel densities of 534 ppi. However, while the raw specs are similar, there are some differences in the underlying technology.

ZTE AXON Phone vs LG G4 Quick Look-4

The LG G4 offers an IPS LCD display dubbed Quantum, which offers a wider color range compared to the previous generation of the G series, as well as more brightness. Looking at the G4’s display, it’s easy to see what LG is talking about: the colors just pop from the screen and there’s little to complain about.

The ZTE Axon is also LCD, but its particularity is the use of Continuous Grain Silicon technology, which increases electron mobility in the display and allows for a thinner and more efficient construction. From our experience with it, the Axon looks fantastic, with great colors, brightness and viewing angles.

ZTE AXON Phone Hands On-5

Performance

ZTE is pulling no punches with the Axon, even if the decision to include the Snapdragon 810 processor may dismay some people. With that said, while HTC and Sony did have some apparent issues with the inclusion of the hot-tempered Snapdragon 810, there’s no guarantee the Axon will suffer the same fate. Performance-wise, there’s nothing to complain about here, though obviously our brief time with the device is not enough for any real judgement. The UI elements were animated without any stuttering and there was no lag in opening and switching between apps – the 4GB of RAM of the Axon certainly help in this regard, as we’ve seen with the Asus Zenfone 2 before it.

ZTE AXON Phone vs LG G4 Quick Look-1

In the opposing corner, LG did not risk using the Snapdragon 810 on the G4, opting instead for the slightly slower Snapdragon 808, coupled with 3GB of RAM. LG’s UI is the fastest it’s ever been on the G4, and that is said to be a result of the optimization work that LG did in collaboration with Qualcomm.

ZTE AXON Phone Hands On-8

Bottom line, these are two powerful devices that will offer great performance, but the Axon may hold the edge thanks to the extra RAM, especially in multi-tasking situations.

 Hardware

In terms of storage, you get 32GB on both devices, but the G4 gets a lead thanks to the presence of a microSD card slot beneath the removable back plate. The Axon, in contrast, does not offer expandable storage, so you will have to rely on the cloud to supplement your 32GB of onboard memory.

ZTE AXON Phone vs LG G4 Quick Look-7

ZTE touted the hi-fi audio playback capabilities of the Axon, but even if the dual grilles would have you believe otherwise, there’s only one speaker on the device, on the bottom side of the phone. Still, ZTE says you will be able to hear the difference that hi-fi audio makes, even when listening with a cheap pair of headphones.

The battery size on both phones is 3,000 mAh, but the unit on the G4 is user replaceable.

Camera

The Axon features a dual-camera setup that resembles the Duo Camera setup of the One M8 and other HTC devices, allowing the device to focalize better and faster, as well as offer features like post-shot refocusing. The two cameras are 13MP and 2MP respectively, and they are aided by a dual-LED flash and two microphones, which should eliminate ambient noise when recording in difficult conditions. Meanwhile, selfie lovers will want to hear about the 8MP front shooter. We’ll need time with the Axon to really appraise its camera, but at least on paper, things are looking good.

ZTE AXON Phone Hands On-12

Things are also looking very good when it comes to the LG G4’s camera, with its laser-assisted focus system and impressive f 1.8 aperture lens allowing it to capture lots of ambient light. Optical image stabilization helps with low light photography and video, and, overall the G4 is one of the finest camera phones you can get right now.

lg g4 review aa (32 of 34)

Software

While ZTE phones destined for the Chinese market are not known for their polished and minimalist user interfaces, the situation is slightly different on the Axon. While there are some customizations, ZTE generally kept stock elements from Android 5.1, including the notification dropdown, the quick settings screen and more. There are a handful of pre-installed apps as well, including Argus and Map My Run.

ZTE AXON Phone Hands On-13

LG chose to simplify the aesthetics of its UI, even if functionality remains relatively stuffy on the G4. There are some questionable features, but also several useful ones, like Knock Code and Multiwindow. LG also worked with Google to put its apps front and center on the device, as opposed to opting for its own apps.

lg-g4-problems-fixes-5

Wrap up

The LG G4 and ZTE Axon are both great devices, but it looks like the newcomer will be able to give the G4 a run for its money, and more than that. At $500, the ZTE Axon is not exactly in the impulse buy territory, but for those who buy their phones unlocked the $150-$250 difference compared to other Android flagships can make a real difference.

We’ll reserve our full judgment for the review, but in the mean time tell us what are your thoughts on the Axon and how it compares with the LG G4?

ZTE Axon vs the competition

ZTE AXON Phone vs LG G4 Quick Look-5

ZTE has its sights set on third place in the US market and its new Axon phone wants to bring some additional competition to the established brands in the market. So let’s take a look at how the ZTE Axon’s hardware stacks up against the best of 2015’s flagship smartphones.

Beginning with the processing hardware, ZTE has opted for Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 810 processor, which is built from four ARM Cortex-A57 and four Cortex-A53 cores configured in a big.LITTLE arrangement. This set-up is used throughout the 2015 flagships, even in Samsung’s Exynos chip, with the exception of the LG G4, which uses the cooler running hexa-core Snapdragon 808.

On the GPU side we see an Adreno 430 GPU, which should be able to provide some extra graphics grunt to push additional pixels to the QHD display. This should give the handset an edge over the G4’s Adreno 418, but the lower display resolution of the One M9 or Xperia Z3+ will result in better frame rates for gamers.

While we’re on the subject of displays, the ZTE Axon matches the leaders in the field with a huge QHD (2560×1440) display resolution. At 5.5-inches, the G4 is the Axon’s closest competitor in screen size. The display is based on Sharp’s rather good LCD technology, but it probably won’t end up with as wide of a color gamut as Samsung’s AMOLED.

ZTE AXON Phone vs Samsung Galaxy S6 Quick Look-6

The Axon’s QHD display resolution matches that of the Galaxy S6, Note 4, LG G4 and Nexus 6.

The one area that ZTE has decided to go above any beyond the competition is with an extra GB of RAM, bringing the total up to 4GB compared with 3GB for every other major flagship. Android has become a bit more of a memory hog these days, but you’re not going to see much of a noticeable improvement in performance by moving from 3GB to 4GB. However, very heavily multi-taskers may find that apps open a little quicker, as there’s extra room to keep these in the background on ZTE’s handset.

In terms of internal storage, ZTE’s Axon matches the 32GB of internal memory offered by most 2015 flagships. Sadly there doesn’t appear to be support for a microSD card, which might leave the phone lacking space if you’re a big media consumer. Samsung opted not to include a microSD card slot with the Galaxy S6, but at least there are models with 64 and 128GB of memory available.

In terms of performance, the ZTE Axon looks able to match the very best Android phones on the market right now.

Moving on to the smartphone’s additional hardware features, we can see a number of high-end features packed in. There’s no support for wireless charging or an infrared port, but the Axon does support NFC, fast LTE data speeds, and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology. ZTE also touts “Hi-Fi audio” via its AKM 4961 codec, which boasts a 32-bit 192 kHz DAC, but there’s actually only one speaker at the bottom of the phone. We certainly won’t attempt to make any calls about quality without a good listen, but it will be interesting to hear how the phone stacks up with the One M9.

ZTE has also paid a lot of attention to this year’s hotly contested smartphone camera feature list. There’s a dual rear camera setup, which sports a 13 megapixel camera with a secondary 2MP cam, allowing for depth refocusing, a feature that was quite popular last generation.

ZTE Axon camera sample images

The Axon’s camera sample images show some impressive low light shots.

Delving a little deeper into the camera specifications we note a BSI sensor which is accompanied by a 6 element lens and f/1.8 aperture, which matches the LG G4. The aperture can also apparently span to f/1.0 for superior image in low-light settings. The Axon has also opted for a higher resolution 8MP front facing camera with 88 degree wide angle lens. Again, we can’t call camera quality without some hands-on time, but the spec sheet suggests that ZTE’s phone will give Samsung, HTC, Sony and LG a run for their money.

The only marginal complaint about the paper specs seems to be that the ZTE Axon is a bit taller than other handsets of a similar size and it also weighs a little bit more. We’re really looking at a phone closer in size to the Galaxy Note 4, which some will love but others may find a little too large.

ZTE AXON Phone Hands On-27

Overall, an initial look at the hardware suggests that ZTE has doubled down with the Axon and has produced a phone that appears to offer the cutting edge hardware that you would expect from a flagship smartphone at a retail price that substantially undercuts most of the competition. The LG G4 is probably the Axon’s closest rival for value for money. At $500, US consumers might be tempted to overlook ZTE’s past reputation to grab a bargain. (Update: actual price for the Axon is $450 as it turns out, not $500).

It was inevitable that LG was going to announce a mid-range version of its flagship LG G4, and that device has been made official today as the LG G4 Beat. If you can imagine a slightly smaller, slightly less powerful version of the LG G4, and you’ve pretty much got the LG G4 Beat – headlining specs for the device include an octacore Snapdragon 615 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display and a 8MP rear camera that inherits LG’s nifty camera features like Color Spectrum Sensor and Laser Auto Focus.

Of course, the device was never meant to turn too many heads, but it is a decent offering at the mid-range, and it does have the added incentive of sharing the LG G4’s unique looks and design. Unfortunately, LG Beat devices of old have often been just a tad too expensive to truly be competitive with the likes of the Moto G, but we’ll see what the pricing is like when the device is actually available. LG says to expect the LG G4 Beat in Europe and Latin America this month with Canada, India, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and others to join at a later date.

The full list of specifications for the LG G4 Beat are:

  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 615 Processor
  • Display: 5.2-inch Full HD IPS LCD (1920 x 1080, 423ppi)
  • Memory: 8GB eMMC ROM / 1.5GB RAM
  • Camera: Rear 8MP LDAF (13MP in Latin America) / Front 5MP
  • Battery: 2,300mAh (removable)
  • Operating System: Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • Size: 142.7 x 72.6 x 9.85mm
  • Weight: 139g
  • Network: 4G LTE / HSPA+ 42.2Mbps (3G)
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n / Bluetooth 4.1 / NFC / A-GPS / Glonass / USB 2.0
  • Colors: Metallic Silver / Ceramic White / Shiny Gold
  • Other: In-Cell Touch / Color Spectrum Sensor / Gesture Interval Shot / Full HD 1080p Video

Press Release

LG G4 BEAT DELIVERS PREMIUM DESIGN,
SUPERIOR FEATURES IN A MID-TIER PACKAGE

Advanced Display, Advanced Camera and Striking Design Come
Together to Create an Exceptional Phone Without the Exceptional Price

SEOUL, July 9, 2015 ― LG Electronics (LG) officially unveiled its newest variant of its widely praised LG G4 flagship smartphone. The LG G4 Beat1 retains the best features and functions of the LG G4, delivering value without compromising performance or usability. The LG G4 Beat will make its debut this month in key markets in Europe and Latin America, including France, Germany and Brazil before rolling out globally in markets such as Canada, India, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and Turkey, among others.

The LG G4 Beat comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS Display, which is clearer, sharper and more responsive than anything offered by LG before in this category. A powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 615 processor running eight cores at 1.5GHz with integrated 4G LTE delivers an optimal balance of power, performance and battery life.

LG G4 Beat’s camera features are equally as impressive as the hardware. On the back is a 8MP camera 2, supported by LG’s exclusive Color Spectrum Sensor and Laser Auto Focus. Manual Mode, one of the most acclaimed features in the G4, allows full creative control over every detail in each shot. LG also enhanced the 5MP front-facing shooter with Gesture Interval Shot to allow users to take four consecutive selfies with a single hand gesture, increasing the odds of capturing that perfect shot.

“Too often, mid-tier phones sacrifice overall usability in order to include that one killer feature,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our goal with the LG G4 Beat was to create a phone that was not only well- balanced in terms of display, camera, performance and design but delivered terrific value and satisfaction.”

Highlights and Features of the LG G4 Beat are:

  • High Performance Multimedia made possible by a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 615 Processor with Octa-Core performance and speed, which can handle Full HD 1080p playback at 60fps and capture at 30fps.
  • Color Spectrum Sensor to measure the exact RGB and infrared values of ambient light and objects, resulting in colors that are truer to nature.
  • Manual Mode to give users fine control over every detail of a shot, including shutter speed, ISO, exposure and white balance.
  • Gesture Interval Shot improves on the original Gesture Shot by increasing the chance of getting that perfect shot even under challenging conditions.

Prices and details of availability will be announced locally at the time of launch.

The LG G4 Beat is a mid-ranger with a few flagship tricks

LG G4 Beat

The growing LG G4 range has just received another new member, following the launch of the G4 Stylus and G4 C earlier in the year. Today the company announced the G4 Beat, which LG says will offer value but won’t compromise on performance.

The G4 Beat is a little smaller than the high flying G4 flagship, shrinking from 5.5-inches down to 5.2 with a Full HD (1920×1080) resolution, rather than QHD (2560×1440). This is a very minor trade-off and the phone also seems to have retained the G4’s subtle curved display.

There’s also a downgraded 8 megapixel camera on the back and a 5 megapixel camera on the front, but the flagship laser auto-focus module and manual shooting mode remains. Interestingly, a 13MP camera will be available in the Latin American market.

“Too often, mid-tier phones sacrifice overall usability in order to include that one killer feature … Our goal with the LG G4 Beat was to create a phone that was not only well- balanced in terms of display, camera, performance and design but delivered terrific value and satisfaction.” – Juno Cho, CEO of LG Mobile

An octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 powers the handset, which is a commonplace chip in today’s mid-tier market, along with 1.5GB of RAM, half of that available with the G4. The battery is also chopped down from 3,000mAh to 2,300mAh, but with less power hungry components the phone’s battery life should still be adequate.

Overall, the LG G4 Beat looks like it does a pretty good job at bridging the gap between the mid-range market and LG’s latest flagship.

LG’s mid-range product portfolio has been instrumental in helping the company secure share in emerging markets such as Latin America. Its range of handsets has also kept LG more competitive with China’s low cost manufacturers. As a result, the company made a £475 million profit last year.

LG G4 Beat colors

The LG G4 Beat is scheduled for an initial launch in Europe and Latin America, although exact dates are yet to be announced, followed by a global rollout shortly afterwards. Pricing is expected to fall somewhere around the €400 mark (~$440), but will vary slightly depending on the market.
