The GSM model being sold is the H815 International version, which is compatible with HSPA and most of the LTE bands used by T-Mobile and AT&T but if you’re on Verizon or Sprint, you’re out of luck as this won’t be compatible with your network.

As if the price wasn’t good enough, this particular model will definitely appeal if you’re someone who likes to mod your phone. The H815 is the only version of the G4 to support LG’s boot loader unlock tool and with TWRP custom recovery support also available online, this is a model that’s set up ready for tinker.

In case you’ve forgotten, the LG G4 is certainly one of the most impressive devices this year and has a feature-rich specs list that includes a Quad HD display, Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB RAM and 16GB expandable storage. On the back is a 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilisation, laser autofocus and colour spectrum sensor, the front snapper is an 8MP snapper while the handset runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with and has a 3000 mAh removable battery.

LG trolls Samsung for not bringing the Note 5 to Europe

lg-trolls-samsung

Ah Samsung; a week ago, the company’s biggest decision of the past few months was met with some interesting responses from customers as the Korean manufacturer decided not to bring its latest Galaxy Note 5 smartphone to Europe. Whether this works out to be a wise decision in the long run is unknown but as far LG is concerned, this is a priceless marketing opportunity that it can’t give up.

In response to Samsung’s somewhat bizarre and strange decision, LG posted a tweet which basically implies they would never do what Samsung has done and instead promotes the LG G4, which is available throughout the world. For would-be Galaxy Note 5 users, the LG G4 doesn’t come with the S-Pen but it does have the removable battery and expandable storage that many have lauded Samsung for leaving out of its latest smartphone.

As much as LG’s marketing ploy may work, it’s unlikely to sway most of those thousands of customers who want Samsung to bring its latest Note to Europe (and I am certainly one of them). A petition has been launched to ask Samsung to bring the handset to Europe and if you want the Note 5 in Europe, be sure to go ahead and sign it (I know I have!).

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 versus LG G4

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_note_5_s_pen_weather_TA

Samsung yesterday announced the Galaxy Note 5, not focusing so much on the hardware side of things, but refining an elegant design that forms to your hand. That said, hardware-wise, it features almost identical specifications to the Note 4, however, Samsung is no longer offering microSD card support in many of its devices, leaving many consumers left wanting.

Many are looking at simply purchasing an LG G4 or waiting for LG’s next flagship to fill that void. Just how well does the Galaxy Note 5 stack up against the LG G4, though? Is it a worthy competitor?

Hit the break to find out!

Design

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_note_5_display_on_lockscreen_TA

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 sizes in at 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6mm and weighs a meager 151 grams. You’ll find it has the standard button layout–volume rocker on the left side of the device, power button on the right side, microUSB port on the bottom right next to the S-Pen slot. Interestingly, Samsung actually chose to put the SIM card tray on the very top of the device.

Samsung took on a unique Galaxy S6-like design with the Note 5, offering a metal unibody with an elegant glass back. It might be slippery at times, but gives the smartphone a much-needed premium vibe to properly differentiate itself from predecessors.

G4_Genuine_Leather3

The LG G4’s features similar dimensions at 148.9 x 76.1 x 6.3 – 9.8mm and weighs in at 155 grams. It has a unique button layout with the volume rocker and power button placed on the back of the device right under the camera.

The LG G4 doesn’t nearly have the premium feel of the Galaxy Note 5, however, its unique in its own way, despite the plastic body.

Winner: Galaxy Note 5

Display

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_note_5_display_sample_image_TA

The Galaxy Note 5 is equipped with a rich and vibrant 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 Super AMOLED display. It has a massive pixel density of 518ppi with an edge-to-edge panel.

The LG G4 has a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 IPS LCD display. Equipped with a pixel density of 538ppi, right next to the Galaxy Note 5, this is one of the most gorgeous screens your going to get on a smartphone.

Winner: It’s a tie, as it comes down to the preferences for the rich and vibrant colors of the Super AMOLED panel or the more realistic colors of the LCD display.

Hardware

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_note_5_launch_TA

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 features the company’s standard Exynos 7420 Octa-core chip, sporting a quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 processor and quad-core 2.1GHz Cortex-A57 CPU. It has 4GB of RAM, a Mali-T760MP8 GPU, 32/64GB of internal storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

LG_G4_From_NYC_02

The LG G4 is running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 chipset, with a quad-core 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a dual-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A57 processor. Equipped with 3GB of RAM, an Adreno 418 GPU, 32GB of internal storage, a 16-megapixel camera, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, this is one of the fastest performing smartphones you can get your hands on.

Winner: It’s a tie – the Galaxy Note 5 wins for sheer processing power and more RAM, but the LG G4 also wins in that it has plenty of expandable storage via microSD card support.

Battery

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-5-wireless-charging

The Galaxy Note 5 is equipped with a 3,000mAh battery with fast charging times up to a meager 90 minutes. It also has fast wireless charging, bringing the device from dead to full in under 120 minutes.

The LG G4 has a similar 3,000mAh battery, and is equipped with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology, allowing for similar fast charging capabilities. It, however, does not have fast wireless charging, just your standard optional Qi charging capabilities.

Winner: It’s a tie, as wireless charging isn’t widely adopted to offer a practical benefit.

Software

samsung_unpacked_galaxy_note_5_air_command_landscape_TA

The Galaxy Note 5 is running the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI atop of Android 5.1.1. It comes with a bevy of extra features, including some additions Samsung brought to the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5, such as live streaming to YouTube from the camera app and more.

It also comes with an arsenal of S-Pen productivity features, such as easy note taking, multi-window options, and more.

The LG G4 is running LG’s UX 4.0 interface atop of Android 5.1.1. Much like TouchWiz, UX comes with a lot of handy features, such as QuickMemo+, a built-in File Manager, a bevy of camera options, and much more.

Winner: The Galaxy Note 5, thanks to its S-Pen capabilities.

Availability and Price

samsung_galaxy_logo_unpacked_2015_TA

The Galaxy Note 5 will be available on August 21, however, the device is up for pre-order for around $249 on a new two-year contract. You can also find it for around $15 – $35/mo on a payment plan. Pricing varies quite a bit, as it’s different depending on the carrier or retailer you buy it from.

The LG G4 is available to purchase will usually cost you $199 on a new two-year contract or $699 outright. However, there are payment plans available ranging from $15 – $35/mo.

Winner: The LG G4 is the clear winner as far as lower price points go.

Wrap Up

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a gorgeous device packing top of the line hardware. Unfortunately, there’s a small crowd upset over the lack of microSD card support, making the LG G4 the perfect option for that focus group.

If you’re just an everyday user, the Galaxy Note 5 will no doubt fit your needs perfectly. But if you want a little more customization and some more freedom as far as storage goes, the LG G4 might be the device up your alley.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 vs the competition

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (8 of 10)

Samsung’s impressive Galaxy Note series has long helped to solidify the company’s position at the top of the mobile market, often boasting the best specifications and cutting edge technology ahead of everyone else in the flagship market. This year’s Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus mark a change in design language as the company transitions over to its Edge display technology and premium glass build materials, but has has this new focus affected Samsung’s lead in smartphone hardware?

Let’s delve into the specifications to see how Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 stacks up with other 5.5-inch plus handsets, and see if it still offers the premium edge that customers have come to expect from the Note series.

Beginning with the big selling point, the large 5.7-inch display. Unchanged from the size and resolution of last year’s Galaxy Note 4, the Note 5 still offers plenty of screen real estate to get to work on. However, 5.7-inches isn’t really considered all that unusual these days, with larger phones like the Nexus 6 and Ascend Mate 7 offering 6-inch displays and a number of more “regular” smartphones popping up at the 5.5-inch mark, such as the G4 and OnePlus 2.

This year, QHD has become the default resolution for larger smartphones, where the extra pixels actually make the most sense. This display clarity is no longer reserved for the very top tier, with more cost effective smartphones from Motorola and ZTE now matching the Note 5 in pixel density. The exception at this size this year is the OnePlus 2. That being said, Samsung’s AMOLED technology is pretty much the best in the business when it comes to color reproduction, so there is more than just pixel count to consider here.

Moto X Style Hands On-73

Cutting edge display and camera technology can be bought for under $500 these days.

Moving on to processing power, Samsung’s Exynos 7420 from the smaller Galaxy S6 range reappears in the Note 5. This is still the best performing chip in benchmarks this year thanks to Samsung’s compact 14nm manufacturing process, which also benefits power consumption. The GPU is probably the most important difference when compared to other phones, and the ARM Mali-T760 MP8 offers up some extra grunt over the Adreno 430 and should be notably faster than the Snapdragon 808’s Adreno 418 when it comes to pushing out pixels for high resolution gaming. When it comes to day to day performance, all of the smartphones listed above offer a smooth experience.

Samsung has also bumped the RAM count up to 4GB from last generation’s 3GB. Samsung is not alone in offering 4GB of RAM in a large smartphone form factor, but honestly this isn’t something completely worth basing a purchasing decision on. Even the sometimes troublesome Android Lollipop runs perfectly smoothly with 3GB of RAM.

All is good so far with the Note 5, but when it comes to storage options, some consumers are bound to be disappointed. Although the handset packs in familiar 32 and 64GB storage options, the move over to a glass back means that, just like the Galaxy S6, the Note 5 has abandoned the popular expandable microSD card slot. The 3,000mAh battery is also now unremovable as a result, which may prove to be an inconvenience for those who make heavy use of their Note handsets for work.

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (9 of 10)

You’re going to have to look elsewhere if you’re after a large phone with a microSD card slot and a removable battery.

As for other features, Samsung has packed in a considerable number of extras with the Note 5. Starting with the camera, the same 16 megapixel rear sensor makes it way over from the Galaxy S6, which we certainly don’t have any complaints about. However, the camera in the LG G4 is similarly impressive and the higher resolution sensors in the Moto X Style and Play are said to rival the Galaxy S6 as well. Samsung’s lead appears to be slimming here too.

Up front, there’s a familiar 5 megapixel camera, which is pretty much the standard these days. Other smartphones actually feature higher resolution sensors on the front, which may be a better choice if you are an avid selfie snapper.

The Note 5 retains a fingerprint scanner, which means that the smartphone will work with Samsung Pay, when it launches in the US next month. Only a small number of larger smartphones feature fingerprint scanning technology. The Mate 7 and OnePlus 2 are cheaper alternatives, but Samsung perhaps offers the better software here.

Fast charging technology is also present, but most other smartphones work with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 tech for the same sort of result. Wireless charging remains the one area that Samsung is ahead of the competition, but this is probably the one feature that many consumers are likely to overlook.

Of course, the beloved S-Pen remains Samsung’s biggest feature advantage over its competitors and the Galaxy Note 5 boasts a few new additions to make better use of the accessory. If you are after a phone with a stylus, the Note 5 is still probably your best bet.

samsung galaxy note 5 vs galaxy note 4 quick look aa (13 of 16)

In summary, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a flagship smartphone in every regard, as we would expect. That said, the series now appears to have morphed into just a larger version of the Galaxy S6 with S-Pen features, and some consumers are going to miss those old microSD and battery features. Furthermore, there are now a range of other smartphones with similarly impressive specifications that, perhaps most importantly, cost considerably less than Samsung’s latest handset. Making a decision has never been tougher in the 5.5-inch plus segment of the market.

What are your thoughts about Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5? Impressed or not?

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 vs LG G4 – quick look

We are at Samsung’s unpacked event taking a look at the Galaxy Note 5. We have spent some quality time with the new handset and already put together a hands-on post. Now it’s time for those nifty comparisons, and the LG G4 is definitely among the first phones we will put the Note 5 against.

It’s the battle of the flagships, and Samsung’s biggest rival (after Apple) is LG. This is bound to be a good fight, so let’s jump right into the nitty gritty of this comparison.

Design

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (2 of 10)

Needless to say Samsung devices haven’t had the best designs in the past, something that changed with the Galaxy S6. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 follows suit by adapting the new premium design language. In comparison, LG’s devices have remained relatively similar, and the G4 does look much like the G3, minus a subtle curve.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has a body made of metal and glass, with a unibody design that is unlike many others. On the other hand, LG has opted for a plastic frame and removable back covers, but that is also one of its most desired features. Not to mention, the G4’s aesthetic value is highly improved by this aspect, as it allows users to sport those sexy leather backs.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Hands On-34

Another main difference is that the LG G4 has the power and volume buttons on the rear, right below the camera. Samsung’s volume rocker is on the right side, while the power button is on the left. Both devices house a microphone and microUSB port on the bottom, as well as the speaker. The Note 5 also includes the S Pen obviously, which has been redesigned with a clickable top button and a more refined overall design.

Design preference is a very subjective matter, but there’s no doubt the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will look and feel like a more premium handset. It’s just a matter of material choice, but some of you will prefer the elegant and unique look the LG G4 sports, especially if you like curved displays and leather backs.

Display

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (1 of 10)

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 touts a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which is definitely larger than LG’s 5.5-inch IPS LCD panel. Aside from size, we are looking at the same exact resolution with a QHD (2560x1440p) definition. Of course, one big difference is the screen technologies these manufacturers use.

Super AMOLED panels are known for emiting very vibrant/saturated colors, as well as deep blacks. This makes images very striking, but some of you may prefer more accurate colors. LG’s IPS LCD display will definitely offer more exact hue reproduction. It uses Quantum Display technology, which can emit 98% of the DCI color gamut, which is the standard used by Hollywood.

Hardware & performance

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (9 of 10)

In terms of speed, we should see very similar results, but these phones do appear somewhat different on paper. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 features an Exynos 7420 processor with 4 GB of RAM. Meanwhile, LG opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset with 3 GB of RAM.

Arguably, Samsung has the upper hand here. Samsung’s chip has showcased some of the highest benchmark results around. Not to mention, the extra GB of RAM will definitely help. Both phones are snappy and will be almost as fast, though. You likely won’t notice the difference in day-to-day use, except perhaps on the most intensive games and even then, the differences will be minor.

lg-g4-problems-fixes-3

But let’s move on to other components. Where the LG G4 does fail is in internal storage options. The handset is only available with 32 GB. Meanwhile, Samsung expands choice with 32/64 GB iterations. Regardless, some of you will still prefer the LG G4 when considering storage, as it supports microSD cards, something Samsung has done away with. By the way, you can also remove the battery on the G4, which allows you to easily swap batteries on-the-go. Both should have great battery life, though, as they carry 3000 mAh of juice.

Where Samsung does win is in a couple other ways: the Galaxy Note 5 has an S-Pen stylus with great software features and a fingerprint reader. If you want those extras, the Note 5 will certainly stand out on top.

Camera

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (10 of 10)

LG really stepped it up with the G4 camera, giving it a 16 MP sensor with OIS, laser auto-focus and f/1.8 aperture. This puts the LG handset very close to Samsung’s Galaxy S6, which has a 16 MP sensor, OIS and an f/1.9 aperture. But Samsung’s camera was still better, even if by a bit. This means the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will also have a better photo quality, as it sports the same camera technology as its smaller brother.

On the front side you will find an 8 MP camera on the LG G4 and a 5 MP front shooter on the Note 5. But remember, megapixels don’t mean too much in photography. We still have to see photo samples before we can tell you which of these front-facing cameras is better.

Software

samsung galaxy note 5 vs lg g4 quick look aa (4 of 10)

Both the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the LG G4 run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but this doesn’t exactly mean their software is identical. In fact, their UI skins are quite different.

Samsung’s TouchWiz UI was stripped down for the Galaxy S6, and we are thankful the same philosophy has been applied to the Galaxy Note 5. It still has all those awesome S-Pen features, multi-tasking tools and other elements, but the interface is much sleeker.

samsung galaxy note 5 first look aa (10 of 41)

Samsung has also redesigned the Air Command menu giving it a more refined look, which now gives you easy access to the three main functions of the S Pen, alongside a few application shortcuts. The Note 5 also adds a few new Note-specific changes, such as the ability to pull out the S Pen when the phone is locked, which will result in a slightly lit up black slate that will let you quickly write down a quick memo. There’s also a new scroll capture mode in Screen Write, allowing you to take and piece together multiple pictures of the same webpage in order to have the entire webpage available.

In comparison, LG’s software is still a bit bloated, but it does not offer a bad experience either and has been highly optimized for the Snapdragon 808. There’s just a few more things floating around your settings, aside from icons being a bit more playful and cartoon-like.

Wrapping up

And there you have it – a quick comparison between the new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the LG G4, one of its biggest competitors. Which one is the best is yet to be decided, but we have to say the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is likely a bit superior. Samsung’s handset has higher performance, a better camera and a design that will be appealing to those who like metal and glass.

On the other hand, the LG G4 has those leather backs some of you love, and the bonus of a removable battery and expandable storage. And even if the Note 5 may have better specs, the G4 is still plenty powerful and has a pretty stunning camera.

We will go in more depth once we can give you our full review on the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, for now hit the comments and tell us which one is your favorite so far.

Samsung France lists the Galaxy S6 Edge+ ahead of launch

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Plus_preorder

It looks like Samsung is trying to beat all the leaksters and rumour mongers in giving away the details of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ ahead of its August 13th launch. The Korean conglomerate has taken the matters in its own hands by briefly posting the pre-registration details of the much anticipated devices on its French website.

In what is being seen as a staged faux pas, the listing confirmed that the upgraded version of the current Samsung flagship will indeed be called the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and it will look exactly like its predecessor, albeit large in size. The post also reveals that Samsung will be throwing in some freebies the Galaxy S6 Edge+ including the company’s Level One Bluetooth headphones as well as free music streaming for the first three months.

The preorders will apparently open from August 21 and will continue till September 3, making it the possible release date of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+.

For those who are wondering whether the curved screen of the Galaxy Edge+ will be more useful than its predecessor, we have some news. A press shot floating online shows that Samsung will let users add up to five app shortcuts to the Edge screen. The current Galaxy S6 Edge allows you to add up to five contacts to the curved ticker, and you call and text them by simply swiping from the Edge panel to the main display.

But is this feature along with a larger screen enough to make you want buy the Galaxy S6 Edge+? Or you would rather go for the plain and powerful Samsung Galaxy S6, the budget beast Motorola Moto G (2015), or the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 that has a large screen as well as a curved display.

Get a $100 prepaid gift card with your new Verizon LG G4

If you’re in the market for a new phone, Verizon is offering a pretty good deal for anyone looking to get the LG G4. If you purchase LG’s newest flagship, the G4, you will get a $100 gift card. There is one caveat to this deal, however. You must purchase the device between now and August 12th, and fill out the necessary form in order to be eligible for this deal.

It does seem that you can either get this device via Verizon’s Edge program, or through the “normal” two-year contract pricing. One more thing to take note of with this deal, is that you must purchase the device through Verizon’s website, or from their brick and mortar locations. Meaning that you will not be eligible for the deal if you go through a third-party retailer.

The G4 has been subject to a lot of various deals since its launch. The latest promotion was through T-Mobile, where they reduced the full-retail cost of the device from $600 down to $480. There were also a couple of deals that were available from LG where consumers received some freebies for picking up the device.

LG G4 owners were able to get a free battery, charging cradle, and leather back directly from LG. This deal was so popular that when the initial promotion ended, LG decided to bring it back to try and drive some more sales. The other promotion was a Buy One Get One Free for their leather back covers for the G4. Both of these promotions have since ended.

Are you in the market for a G4? Let us know in the comments below if you’re looking at picking up the G4 from Big Red. If you already have the G4, be sure to let us know your thoughts on LG’s latest flagship device.

The LG G4 is one hell of a smartphone. It managed to get a 9/10 in our review, and we had very little to complain about. One of the lures of this device is that it’s actually among the very few handsets which still tout a removable battery and microSD card support, something most manufacturers have been getting rid of.

The device also sports a very unique look, featuring that curved profile and interchangeable backs. I have a thing for wooden and leather-clad phones, so LG stole my heart with this one. Not to mention, it performs like a champ.

Who is signing up?!

OnePlus 2 vs LG G4 quick look

OnePlus has taken the wraps off of its latest flagship offering, and naturally, a question that a lot of you will have is with regards to how it fares against the latest and greatest that the world of Android flagships. We’ve already pit the device against the Samsung Galaxy S6, and now, we take a quick look at the OnePlus 2 vs LG G4!

oneplus 2 launch aa (89 of 93)

The OnePlus 2 retains a lot of the design language of its predecessor, but with some minor tweaks and refinements along the way. The big change comes in the build material, with the OP2 featuring a metal frame and stainless steel accents. When it comes to the rear backing, apart from retaining the sandstone black version, new options include Kevlar, bamboo, rosewood, and black apricot, all as a part of the StyleSwap series. OnePlus also promises that switching between this rear backing options will be much easier this time around, and will not require any additional tools to do so.

The big change that is noticeable immediately is the introduction of a home button up front, and like most devices that feature the same, this button is home to a fingerprint scanner. Another added control is the Alert Slider, found on the left side, that lets you toggle between your notification settings (none, priority, and all) quickly and easily, without needing to unlock your phone. Another big addition with the OnePlus 2 is the use of a USB Type-C port, found at the bottom of the device, making it one of the first devices to adopt the latest USB standard.

On the other hand, the LG G4 brings together the best design elements of their last two high-end offerings, the G Flex 2 and the LG G3, culminating into the LG G4, with its subtle curve to the display, that is more pronounced when turning over to the back, as well as the signature LG rear button layout. While the design isn’t a dramatic departure from the the company’s norm, what LG tried to do in terms of uniqueness is seen in the material options available for the rear panel. Available in a plastic backing with a ceramic finish, or in leather, with a variety of color options, the LG G4 is a head turner in its own unique way.

Both devices feature 5.5-inch displays, with dimensions that are quite similar. As such, the handling experience is also similar between the two, although the LG G4 does get some points for easier access to the button layout courtesy of their unique position on the back, compared to the more standard placements found with the OnePlus 2.

Both devices feature 5.5-inch displays, but of the 1080p variety in the case of the OnePlus 2, compared to the Quad HD screen of the LG G4, resulting in a pixel density of 401 ppi and 534 respectively. The In-Cell IPS LCD display with a 178 degree viewing angles means that viewing angles are great, and with a brightness of 600 nits, the OnePlus 2 outperforms most devices in the market, including the LG G4, and in this regard, outdoor visibility should be of no concern. While many may be disappointed with the lack of Quad HD, 1080p certainly still gets the job done.

A big focus with the LG G4 was on making this display rival the DCI standard found in general television and cinema, with the Quantum display hitting 98% of the mark. The LG G4 display may not pop as much as the AMOLEDs of the world, but the color reproduction is certainly very accurate, and there are no issues with brightness or viewing angles.

Given that both smartphones are current generation high-end flagships, it’s no surprise that they feature the best that Qualcomm has to offer. The OnePlus 2 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, clocked at 1.8 GHz, and backed by the Adreno 430 GPU, while the LG G4 comes with a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 and 3 GB RAM in the case of the LG G4, with an additional gig of RAM available with the OnePlus 2 64 GB version.

oneplus 2 launch aa (84 of 93)

The performance is as smooth as ever with either device, and doing anything, from opening and closing apps, scrolling through various elements of the UI, to playing graphic-intensive games are handled easily, even though the hexacore processor of the of the LG G4 is considered the inferior of the two, it doesn’t really translate when it comes to real world performance. The Snapdragon 810 is notorious for getting uncomfortably warm though, and we will have to wait and see if that issue comes with the OnePlus 2, even though OnePlus claims that this shouldn’t be a worry.

oneplus 2 launch aa (86 of 93)

The OnePlus 2 comes with either 16 GB or 64 GB storage options, which also dictates how much RAM you get, 3 GB or 4 GB, but there is no expandable storage available, so users will have to pay a little more to get the latter. On the other hand, the LG G4 comes with 32 GB of on-board storage, but with a microSD card slot that allows users additional storage of up to 128 GB. On the hardware front, the big addition in the case of the OnePlus 2 is the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the physical home button up front. The OnePlus 2 packs a larger 3,300 mAh battery, compared to the 3000 mAh unit of the LG G4, and given the overall similarities between the two devices, the battery life story should also be along the same lines, with the OnePlus 2 maybe offering better battery life because of its lower resolution screen.

One feature that is conspicuously missing from the OnePlus 2 is a NFC chip. OnePlus claims it removed it because users don’t really care about it, but given that NFC is crucial for mobile payments and other applications favored by OnePlus’ target audience, we’re skeptical about this decision.

oneplus 2 launch aa (80 of 93)

In the case of the G4, a f/1.8 aperture package outshines the competition with a larger sensor over ones found in other flagships. OIS is also enhanced with a wider stabilization range. Color has been given a big focus, with LG adding in a color spectrum sensor found right next to the optics that will analyze the scene to help achieve the right white balance automatically and accurately. The manual mode is another big story, as LG has put in all of the big features photographers get in full cameras – a full white balance gamut, a lot of ISO stops, manual focus, a histogram, and even the ability to shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously. Overall, the LG G4 camera is one of the best in the business, and is certainly a very hard act to follow.

oneplus 2 launch aa (88 of 93)

If there was any issue with the OnePlus One, it had to do with the camera, which, while definitely not the worst, wasn’t particularly great either. OnePlus is hoping to change all that with the 13 MP rear camera of the latest device, which comes with an f/2.0 aperture, OIS, and also a laser auto focus system similar to what the LG flagship is packing. The OP2 camera also supports 4K video recording and capturing images in the RAW format. While things look great in our initial time with the device, a more thorough testing will be required before we can make any final judgments.

oneplus 2 launch aa (82 of 93)

The OnePlus 2 is running OnePlus’ own Oxygen OS, based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, which retains a lot of the stock Android and Material Design elements, while also adding some interesting and very useful features. It is filled with features though, including off-screen gestures, such as double tap to wake, drawing an O to open the camera, drawing a V to toggle flashlight, drawing two straight vertical lines with two fingers to play/pause music, and drawing < or > to play previous or next track respectively. Custom LED notifications lets you set a particular color for a certain type of notification, easy notification access, custom hardware and software navigation keys, a dark mode for better night time viewing, and Shelf, which is essentially a large widget that houses your most used apps and favorite contacts, and that is to only name a few.

oneplus 2 launch aa (83 of 93)

In software, the G4 comes with a very familiar user interface that hasn’t changed much – but an optimized processing package allows for lag and stutter to be kept at a minimum. Many of LGs features have been retained, ranging from the useful, like Knock Code and Multiwindow, to the not so useful, like Smart Bulletin and Smart Notice.

Of course, the big story here is the price, and OnePlus continues to break the mold in this regard, by bringing to consumers another fantastic high-end smartphone, at less than half the price of its direct competition, including the LG G4. It’s difficult to argue against a device that offers all that the OnePlus 2 does, for just $389 for the 64 GB version, and even cheaper at $329 for the 16 GB iteration, which is more than enough reason to overlook any flaws that the device may have. It is actually quite unfortunate that OnePlus is re-introducing the dreaded invite system once again, because other than that, the company seems to have a sure fire winner on their hands, and hopefully, it’ll be much easier to get your hands on the device this time around.

LG made 1.2 cents in profit for every phone it sold last quarter

https://i1.wp.com/o.aolcdn.com/dims-global/dims3/GLOB/resize/1600x800/http://www.blogcdn.com/slideshows/images/slides/347/301/4/S3473014/slug/l/g4rev03-1.jpg?w=640

LG’s latest earnings report shows just how tough the smartphone market is getting. On the one hand, LG Mobile shipped 8.1 million LTE smartphones, its best result ever. On the other hand, it sold fewer premium models in Korea and spent a lot of money marketing its flagship G4 in the US against models by Apple, Samsung, et al. (The company singled out Apple, saying that iPhone sales hurt its earnings this quarter.) The net result was a mobile operating profit of just 200 million won ($172,000) or 1.2 cents per phone. The good news is that the LG G4 has only been on sale in the US for two months, so it may have a stronger impact on LG’s bottom line next quarter.

On top of a tight smartphone market, LG’s Home Entertainment division said that global demand for LCD TVs was “soft,” as revenue dropped 22.7 percent to 3.93 trillion won ($3.59 billion). However, the company is bullish on its 4K OLED TVs, and plans to expand its lineup “with newer designs at more attractive price points.” For the quarter, LG saw an overeall drop in sales of 7.6 percent and earnings that were down 45 percent over last year to 226.4 billion won ($195 million). And if not for the company’s profitable Home Appliance division, that number would’ve been a loss.
