The number of sources that have confirmed that there is a Huawei Nexus smartphone happening has risen again with The Information‘s Amir Efrati posting confirmation that Huawei is working with Google to release a Nexus smartphone. While we were never really in doubt, it’s always good to get more confirmation from what is widely considered a reputable source. Unfortunately, that’s all that this report has to say – that the device exists – and no new tidbits were released.
To recap what we think we know about the Huawei Nexus, it’s been widely rumoured to be based on the upcoming Huawei Ascend Mate 8 which will make it a 5.7-inch device. While the Ascend Mate 8 is likely using quite a few homegrown parts, like the Kirin processor, the Huawei Nexus is expected to use more common (and arguably more powerful) parts like a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The partnership is likely to work wonders for both sides, with Huawei getting more recognition in Western markets and Google hopefully smoothing things over in the Chinese markets. A lot still has to happen between now and whenever this device eventually appears, but we’re confident it’s going to be a killer smartphone.

Google teaming up with Huawei for the new Nexus
We’ve heard numerous times before that various manufactures are in on the new Nexus and one of the most likely has been Huawei. This time, a new report has surfaced that once again puts Huawei behind the hardware for the next Nexus smartphone.
This comes courtesy of ‘The Information‘, which has been reliable in the past when it comes to source leaks, who say that Google will be teaming up with Huawei in a partnership that will benefit both companies.
The next Nexus device is expected to be a 5.7-inch Quad HD device, powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor, and could be only one of two Nexus devices that possibly would be offered in different sizes.
The ‘benefit both companies’ piece revolves around bringing the Chinese manufacturer into the US market and this will inturn help Google bring their Google Play Store to China, a place where it hasn’t had much luck.
In addition to the Huawei-made Nexus 5.7-inch device, LG are also reportedly in talks with Google to bring a smaller 5-inch device, similar to the profile of the Nexus 5, both of which will be running Android M and will be launched in parallel of the new operating system.

Huawei will be making the next Nexus
Chinese manufacture Huawei will be partnering with Google to make the next Nexus phone for this fall. This is not the first we have heard of this as last month IBT reported it was coming. It is also rumored that their will be two Nexus phones a 5.7-inch Huawei device and a 5.2-inch phone from LG.
This is a bold move by Google that could be very beneficial in many other ways too. There is talk that Huawei will help Google bring a mobile app store to China where they have very strict regulations to outsiders. Google is also said to help Huawei market any future devices in North America.
This could be a huge deal for Huawei as the Nexus phone is supposed to be exactly how Google wants to show off their operating system and it has a very strong following. If it goes well it could have a big impact on future sales of all their devices.

Best Three Android phones (UK)

Three may be a smaller player in the UK market, but the company has recently been taking a stand against the established mobile carriers, promising not to charge extra for faster 4G data speeds or punishing their customers with expensive roaming charges. The company also bucks current trends by offering to unlock its smartphones for free and has some of the lowest pay-as-you-go call and text rates around.
It’s all quite compelling, so let’s see if Three has some equally tempting hardware on offer. Here are the best Three Android phones.
#1 Samsung Galaxy S6
As I’m sure you’re aware, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is probably the most cutting edge piece of mobile hardware on the market right now. In fact, it’s pretty hard to find a list that isn’t recommending this phone, but Three’s current contract options make it an even more appealing bargain.
Contrary to many other carriers, Three is actually selling the Galaxy S6 for cheaper than the LG G4, the HTC One M9, and Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. Contract prices begin at just £35 per month with £0 down for the 32GB model, while rival flagships are all priced closer to £40 per month with at least £20 upfront. Over two years, that works out to a saving of £140! However, this offer is set to end on July 9th.
Three also has the Galaxy S6 Edge available with a slightly higher £43 per month minimum contract price and £49 upfront.

Huawei Honor 7 sold out in China in just 2 minutes

Huawei’s new Honor 7 flagship had its first flash sale in China yesterday and the smartphone seems to have gone down rather well. The company achieved a new record, selling out of stock in just 2 minutes.
The flash sale stocked 200,000 units of the Honor 7 with a few different hardware configurations, all of which were bought up in just a couple of minutes. That works out to a crazy 1,667 handsets snapped up each second.
The models on sale included the standard 16GB version for 1999 Yuan ($322), a middle option with dual-SIM LTE for 2199 Yuan ($354) and the all network compatible 64GB model for 2499 Yuan ($400).
The Huawei Honor 7 was announced at the end of last month. The smartphone features some compelling specifications for its price tag and stacks up rather nicely against many of the more expensive flagships on the market. It’s the value for money on offer here which has made the smartphone so attractive to the Chinese market.
The Honor 7 features a 5.2-inch 1080p display and is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Kirin 930 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 21MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, and comes with up to 64GB of internal storage with microSD card support for a further 128GB. Very reasonable for $400, at most.
The next Chinese flash sale for the Honor 7 is scheduled for July 14th. You’ll definitely want to open up your browser early if you want to stand a chance of grabbing one.
High-end Huawei Kirin 950 SoC spec sheet leaked
![]()
Although perhaps not as well-known as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or Samsung’s Exynos range of mobile SoCs, Huawei has its own line-up of Kirin processors that it uses in its mobile devices. The datasheet for a new Kirin 950 SoC has leaked online, revealing a next-generation design that rivals the major players.
The Kirin 950 is apparently a 64-bit octa-core design that makes use of four high performance ARM Cortex-A72 cores and four energy efficient Cortex-A53 CPU cores. The high performance CPUs can reach peak clock speeds of 2.4GHz, which is notable higher than the flagship A57 based designs from Samsung and Qualcomm, which typically top out at 2.0GHz.
The 20 percent higher clock is likely partially down to the rumored use of a 16nm manufacturing process. The Cortex-A72 also offers some power savings over the A57, which could be put towards a higher clock speed.

Accompanying the latest ARM CPU cores is an ARM Mali-T880 graphics processing unit. The T-880 is ARM’s latest high performance GPU design, although we know have a number for the core count at the moment. The chip also supports dual-channel LPDDR4 memory with a bandwidth up to 25.6GB/s.
Huawei’s Kirin 950 is also said to support a dedicated Tensilica 4 DSP unit, dual cameras with up to 42MP of resolution, 4K HVEC & VP9 video decoding and encoding, and a i7 co-processor for sensor hub and security processing.
High speed UFS 2.0, eMMC 5.1 and SD 4.1 storage standards are also supported, as are USB 3.0 data transfers. As for network connectivity, the chip will support Category 10 4G LTE data speeds for up to 102Mb/s peak upload and 452Mb/s download. Dual-SIM compatibility is also listed on the spec sheet.
Although still unconfirmed, the Kirin 950 is shaping up to be a cutting edge piece of mobile silicon. It certainly looks to be able to rival SoCs from larger manufacturers and might make whatever future Huawei handset it shows up in a very compelling option for the performance enthusiast.

Huawei typically doesn’t have many devices that we hopelessly pine over (not that they aren’t great), but after learning that a possible Huawei Nexus smartphone might be in the pipeline and that it would be based on the Huawei Ascend Mate 8, we’re paying a lot more attention to any rumours regarding this upcoming device. Today, a render of the device has leaked out, showing much of the same compared to last years Ascend Mate 7 – the device is generally metallic, still with a fingerprint scanner adorning the back of the device, though it appears the Ascend Mate 8 may be getting a metal strip around its outer edges.
Along with the render, we’re also treated to specs for the Ascend Mate 8, which include a Huawei-made Kirin 950 processor, 6-inch Quad HD display, and 20MP camera. There are reportedly also two variants which will either have 3GB RAM and 32GB storage or 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. It will be interesting to see how much of the Ascend Mate 8 is re-used in the Huawei Nexus device, although we’ve heard absolutely nothing about the device besides the fact that it probably exists.

Here is an almost full spec sheet of Huawei’s upcoming 64-bit Kirin 950 chipset
China’s Huawei has been manufacturing and using it’s own chips in some of it’s own devices for a while now. Most notably Huawei P8 and Huawei Ascend Mate7.
We have heard some talk of them releasing a new chipset called the “Kirin 950″. The chip is said to include a 64-bit octa-core chipset that comprises four Cortex-A53 cores and another quartet of Cortex-A72 ones. The Kirin 950 will also be rated at 2.4GHz. For the graphics an ARM Mali T880 unit will be used.
A dedicated DSP audio co-processor, a Tensilica Hi-Fi 4 DSP, another co-processor, an i7, will act as a sensor, connectivity, and security hub, working in the octa-core heart’s stead. The chipset will also support dual-channel LPDDR4 RAM, UFS 2.0, and eMMC 5.1 storage. Camera lovers out there will be happy to know it can also support up to 42MP camera units as well as a list of other features.
We are not sure when the Kirin 950 will be released, but we would imagine it will go into their next flagship phone.
