HTC Desire 626 review

Buy now from AT&T

With a few exceptions, HTC’s diverse smartphone portfolio is largely divided into the flagship One series and the Desire line, that includes everything from entry-level to “premium mid-range” devices. Over the past two years, HTC has made some great additions to the Desire series, and is hoping to continue that with their latest entry-level smartphone. What does this latest affordable smartphone bring to the table? We find out, in this full review of the HTC Desire 626!

Design

HTC Desire 626-7

With the current crop of Desire smartphones, HTC has sought to maintain a consistent design language across the series, and that continues with the Desire 626, which also features a unibody plastic construction with a dual tone color scheme. With up to six different color options with complementary accents, it won’t be difficult to find something that suits your tastes.

HTC Desire 626-16

Going around the device, the power button and the volume rocker are to the right, and on the left is a flap that houses the SIM card slot and a microSD card slot. The buttons are unfortunately not to a very a high standard and offer very little tactile feedback when pressed, but there are no issues with presses being registered though. The headphone jack and microUSB port are placed at the top and bottom respectively. On the back is the primary camera, and up front is a single speaker unit below the HTC branding, and above the display is the front-facing camera next to the earpiece.

HTC Desire 626-14

HTC is known for excelling in the design and build quality, and that remains true this time around as well. Despite being made entirely of plastic, the Desire 626 feels great in the hand, and with a thickness of 8.1 mm and weight of 139 grams, is quite substantial for an otherwise relatively compact device. Granted, the design may feel recycled at this point, but a good design is still just that.

Display

HTC Desire 626-18

The Desire 626 comes with a 5-inch LCD3 display with a 1280 x 720 resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 294 ppi. The display is quite good given the price of the device, offering good brightness and viewing angles, with the color temperature leaning slightly towards the warmer side of things. Some form of software-based sharpening is happening across the display though, which results in the application icons and text looking a bit off, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there is a way to disable this setting.

Performance

HTC Desire 626-10

Under the hood, the Desire 626 packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor, clocked at 1.1 GHz, and backed by the Adreno 304 GPU and 1.5 GB of RAM. Given the entry-level nature of this processing package, performance is a little on the slower side, and while the device never froze, there were noticeable instances of stutter and lag during animations, transitions, and other areas. The device handles multi-tasking quite well, and as far as gaming is concerned, while casual games run just fine, you will however see some slow load times and frame drops with more graphically-intensive games.

Hardware

HTC Desire 626-17

The HTC Desire 626 comes with only 8 GB of on-board storage, but it does allow for expandable storage via microSD card slot by up to 200 GB. The device comes with a standard suite of connectivity options, including 4G LTE support, and with the phone marked for release from most major US network carriers, being able to take advantage of high-speed internet access will not be a problem.

HTC Desire 626-3

Despite appearances, the Desire 626 doesn’t retain the signature dual front-facing BoomSound speakers found with many other HTC smartphones, instead packing a single speaker up front below the display. The speaker tends to get distorted at higher volumes, and doesn’t get very loud either, but this is still a far better implementation than any rear speaker setup.

The Desire 626 comes with a 2,000 mAh non-removable battery, which unfortunately allows for a disappointing battery life. The device ended up lasting for around 12 hours with just over 2 hours of screen-on time. It has to be mentioned here that HTC devices don’t show screen-on time stats, and these values were found by using the Gsam Battery Monitor. There are a couple of power saving modes baked in to get that little bit of extra juice out of the device, but most users might still have a difficult time comfortably getting a full day of use from this smartphone.

Camera

HTC Desire 626-11

The HTC Desire 626 comes with an 8 MP rear camera with a LED flash, and a 5 MP front-facing unit. The primary camera is actually slightly better than average when compared to other devices that fall in this price range, and performs well in brightly-lit environments. It does struggle when processing bright colors though, but overall, allows for some nice looking shots.

HTC’s camera application is quite robust when it comes to features and settings, and apart from quite a few shooting modes, includes manual control with settings ISO, exposure, and white balance. You also have the ability to save your customized settings as a shooting mode for later use, which is a very nice touch.

Software

HTC Desire 626-4

On the software side of things, the HTC Desire 626 runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, with the HTC Sense 7 UI on top. While quite different from stock Android, HTC’s Sense UI is one of the better takes on Android out there with a clear focus on design and keeping things smooth. Returning are HTC staples like Blinkfeed, and there is also a powerful multi-tasking menu, customizable quick toggles, and the ability to tweak some general elements of the interface to cater the look and feel to your liking.

There is an unnecessary amount of extra applications packed into the software package though, and this is not only a result of the carrier bloatware that is usually found when a device is locked to a particular US network carrier, which is AT&T in the case of this review unit. Apps such as Digital Life, WildTangent Games, Keeper, KeyVPN, Lookout, Uber, Yellow Pages, and a whole collection of redundant HTC apps are pre-installed, including three separate email clients, which can be confusing. It’s all well and good if you find these apps useful, but luckily, you do have the option to uninstall most of them if you find them simply getting in the way.

Pricing and final thoughts

The HTC Desire 626 will be available with most US network carriers soon. In the case of AT&T, the device is priced at $0.99 with a two-year contractual commitment, or for $185 under the AT&T Next program, and you can expect similar pricing strategies across the board. Keep in mind however that there are two versions of the device, with the same branding, which can be quite confusing, but it’ll be easy to spot the difference between the two with a quick glance at the specifications. Depending on your network carrier, this latest version of the device may also be known as the HTC Desire 626s.

HTC Desire 626-1

So there you have it for this look at the HTC Desire 626! Although this entry-level smartphone gets a few key aspects right, including its beautiful design and solid build quality, good camera, and excellent software experience, there are some glaring flaws that are hard to overlook. For starters, the performance isn’t entirely up to the mark, even for a low-cost smartphone, and the battery life is quite disappointing, which may be a turn off for some. While this would have been a fantastic entry-level smartphone only a year ago, a slew of great sub-$200 devices that have made, and will be making, their way to the market results in the Desire 626 being a tough sell.

This might be HTC’s late-2015 flagship phone

HTC's A9, aka Aero

HTC has been promising another “hero” phone this October to try and turn around its dismal fiscal performance, but what that device would look like has remained a mystery. Would it just be a tweaked One M9? If a claimed photo leak is accurate, it might be considerably more than that. The two images purport to show the A9 (aka Aero), a handset that has very little in common with the M9. Its camera is above the antenna stripe (reminiscent of the M8’s depth camera) rather than below, and it appears to be flatter. The front, meanwhile, looks like it’s switching to “2.5D” curved glass. Those aren’t far-fetched changes, but we can’t blame you if you’re still skeptical — these pics are tough to verify, so it’s possible that they’re just fanciful renderings.

And what’s inside? That’s even less certain, although there are rumors that the A9 will use a 10-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch quad HD display and a hefty 3,500mAh battery. If so, this would be a different beast than the M9, focusing more on longevity (the main reason the X20 has all those cores) over raw performance. With that said, we’re not convinced yet. The X20 isn’t supposed to be ready until early 2016, so you may see a more familiar chip inside HTC’s stopgap smartphone.

HTC A9 (Aero) images leaked

HTC A9 Hero

Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka @OnLeaks, has just uploaded a couple of pictures apparently showing off the upcoming HTC A9, or the HTC Aero if you prefer. The handset has leaked a couple of time already this year and could form the beginning of a new range from HTC. The phone has been rumored to be heading to Sprint this November too.

The leak shows off the front and the back of the handset, alongside Apple’s latest flagship. While the A9’s design is not that different from HTC’s long running One range, the move over towards a flat back certainly leaves the handset bearing greater resemblance to Apple’s iPhone 6. I can’t say that I’m a big fan of the gold look either.

As part of the company’s efforts to improve its dwindling revenue this year, CEO Cher Wang has already announced that HTC will be releasing a new “hero” device this October, which could be the A9. However, the company has not been giving away any further details about the handset.

Fortunately, rumors have already alluded to some potential hardware specifications. The A9 may be one of the first smartphones to features MediaTek’s high end deca-core Helio X20 SoC, along with a 5.2-inch QHD resolution display, 4GB of RAM and a large 3,500mAh battery. The phone is also rumored to come with 2.5D glass and a full metal body design, just like in the picture. If true, the A9 would certainly make it into the high-end category, but we will have to wait and see about the price.

As with all leaks and rumors, we’ll have to take these pictures with a pinch of salt. Still, what do you think about this potential design for the HTC A9?

Samsung has started pushing notification ads like HTC has

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Seeing ads in free apps is usually a minor inconvenience, something which can be resolved usually by buying the premium version. But what happens when you start getting ads on your smartphone which you’ve paid for? That’s the behaviour that was observed a few weeks ago on some HTC devices who started receiving push notification ads, and it appears that Samsung has joined this club as Samsung has started pushing notification ads to its latest flagship devices. As the images below show, there are an assortment of ads being pushed by Samsung’s packaged apps like the Peel Smart Remote and Samsung Push Service:

Samsung has started pushing notification ads
Samsung has started pushing notification ads

At worst, these push notification ads are annoying, but the fact that Samsung is doing this can’t be pleasing to many of its loyal consumers. Of course, Samsung is likely just supplying the tools for advertisers to make use of their apps, like the Land Rover sponsored ad, but advertising their new devices on an older device just seems a little desperate.

What do you think about Samsung making use of push notification ads? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

HTC Motion Launch lets users set different gestures as lock screen shortcuts

Android Apps_HTC_Motion Launch_082215_5HTC’s new Motion Launch application is now available to download in the Play Store. The handy app lets users interact with the display of their select HTC smartphone even when the display is off.

This app allows HTC to supply faster updates without having to push out a full software update. HTC Motion Launch brings new launch settings using gestures. By setting up simple gestures, users can set shortcuts for easily unlocking your device, waking up your device or even opening an application from the lock screen if you’re in a hurry. It’s a fun little app to play around with and can make tasks easier and more joyful. Sadly, it’s only available on select HTC smartphones.

T-Mobile’s HTC One M9 receives Android 5.1 update, will include Stagefright fix

HTC_One_M9+_3V_Silver_Blog-Header-550x297According to an HTC executive, Mo Versi, T-Mobile HTC One M9 users will soon get a patch for the Android Stagefright virus. The update is slated as Android 5.1, meaning it will also bring new enhancements to the Android system.

The update will be made available via OTA to T-Mobile One M9 users tomorrow. If you don’t feel like manually installing the update, you can wait for the notification or check in your About phone settings.

Included in the update will be a patch to the Stagefright virus along with a slew of other added features. With Android 5.1, One M9 users will now get access to a native battery saver in addition to new animations for quick settings. The new One M9 update will also include a new flashlight quick toggle.

The update is being sent out in waves so if you don’t get it tomorrow just be patient, it may be the next day. HTC recommends to charge your One M9 to at least 50% prior to installing the update and connect to a Wi-Fi network to prevent overages. It seems the update will take up a bit of storage.

Verizon HTC One M9 getting Android 5.1 update August 20th

htc-one-m9-review-aa-2-of-34

Verizon HTC One M9 users have been growing tired of waiting for their Android 5.1 update. We have good news for you – it’s finally time for your device to get upgraded, and the manufacturer has decided to hit a few birds with a single stone.

HTC’s own Mo Versi, VP of product management at HTC, took it to Twitter to tell us Verizon finally approved the Lollipop 5.1 update. He goes on to mention the software will be rolling out starting tomorrow, August 20th.

htc one m9 66

Why did it take them so long? Well, we may understand the issue now. It turns out this update comes with more than just the Android 5.1 software. In addition, HTC has added the Stagefright vulnerability patch and enabled bands 3 & 7 (for roaming).

You have heard about the Stagefright weakness that left about 95% of all Android devices susceptible to MMS attacks, right? It was no joke, so it’s good to see most manufacturers got the ball rolling on those patches right away. Now your HTC One M9 from Verizon is protected, as well!

Remember, these updates don’t always show up right away. They are gradually rolled out to all users, so you may not see the notification show up immediately. You could jump into the settings and check for upgrades from time to time, but just try not to smash your screen checking every minute. The update will come!
