New HTC M8 Image Shows its Shiny Back

htcm8-back

The HTC M8 caught on camera campaign keeps rolling on, and today, HTCFamily.ru posts more images of the new flagship. The image above really shows its glossy back, which makes look even more sexy in my eyes. According to HTCFamily, the back is a polished metal with black plastic inserts. Whatever it is, I think it looks like eye-candy. They also uploaded a video showing us a render of the HTC M8. It isn’t real, but it might as well be since they have held it in their hands. So check that out below, and let us know what you think about it.

HTC will support new flagships for two years, reconsidering update for HTC One X

HTC will support new flagships for two yearsIf you weren’t aware, HTC hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit this morning, putting themselves out there to answer questions from all their fans and naysayers. But before these interested parties were able to say anything, HTC made an announcement that they will be trying to change their image, starting with a promise; a promise that HTC will support new flagships for two years after they have been released, a bold promise considering very few OEMs have even achieved this for one of their phones.

One other gem from this AMA, which will have HTC One X and One X+ owners very happy, is that HTC is now reconsidering updating these phones to Android KitKat. This is a pretty big backflip considering HTC came out and officially said that the phone would not be supported past Android 4.2.2, but I think we can all agree this change a good thing. What was slightly suspicious was that HTC claimed that the update was originally scrapped due to a lack of cooperation from NVIDIA with regards to the Tegra 3 processor in some of the global One X devices, however the US versions all have Qualcomm processors.

If you want to catch up and read what else went down in the HTC AMA, hit the Reddit link below which will take you to the feed. What do you make of HTC’s announcement today? Do you think they’ll be able to stick to their word on both these announcements? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

HTC will bring all ‘major Android updates’ to new flagship devices for two years (update: only in North America)

Members of HTC’s US product team have just started taking questions from Android fans over on Reddit, and they’re already dropping some goodies. After conceding that the company’s track record with updates isn’t spotless, they confirmed that HTC plans to bring “all major Android updates” to its forthcoming North American flagship devices for a full two years after they’ve been released.

We can hazard a guess at what those new flagships may be, but it’s heartening to see HTC pledge prolonged support for its new phones. After all, few things are as frustrating as buying a shiny new smartphone only to see its maker basically forget about it after a few months. Sadly, HTC isn’t a stranger to that stuff: the company caught flack for refusing to update the One X past Android 4.2, a decision it made to maintain a level of software parity between the Tegra and Snapdragon variants floating around out there. The move ruffled enough feathers to get HTC working on exploring the idea of an Android 4.4 update for the One X, but if the company sticks to its word such headaches will be a thing of the past.

Update: The original AMA post said HTC would “support all new flagship devices going forward with all major Android updates,” but the company has clarified that it meant North American flagships specifically.

HTC working with Microsoft to bring Windows Phone Blue to 8X

HTC hasn’t forgotten about Windows Phone after all. The company’s been pretty silent on any sort of collaboration with Microsoft for a long time, but the North American product team spoke up today on Reddit. When asked if HTC is done with Windows Phone, the team stated: “we’re working with Microsoft on the Blue update on Windows Phone 8X and will continue to take new products into consideration.” Indeed, it appears that the 8X — which will be nearly a year and a half old in April, when the Blue update is rumored to launch — will get the latest and greatest version of Windows Phone after all, and perhaps we may even see new hardware down the road. Sadly there’s no word on what will happen to the 8S, which launched around the same time, so we’ll have to wait and see. As a sidenote, it’s also rare to hear companies directly confirm the existence of upcoming updates, but let’s face it: It’s not as if it’s really that big a secret these days anyway.

Ask HTC Anything on Reddit today

Have you ever wanted to ask HTC why they stopped making Windows Phones? Or… about why it takes so long for them to issue updates? Or how about why the Sense UI sucked for so long? Well now’s your chance.

HTC are hosting an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit today from 1:30pm to 3:00pm PST.

Rules seem to be fairly open, as does the topic choice at the moment, with HTC choosing not to publish any details about the session, only that it’s happening.

I imagine of most interest will be HTC’s inability to deliver consistent up to date Android operating system deltas to the carriers for delivery onto consumers.

What will you ask? Hit up the link to access the AMA on Reddit.
