HTC One M8 Prime rumoured for September release with Snapdragon 805, Quad HD Display
While we’ve heard of one Prime device, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, that may be released very soon with an upgraded display which is capable of 2K resolutions, there may be another Prime device also on the distant horizon. That other device could be the HTC One M8 which was launched earlier this year with “only” a 1080p resolution display (the other being of course the Galaxy S5), but rumours are saying that HTC is also planning a HTC One M8 Prime which will update the device with a Quad HD, 2K display sometime in September.
Not only would HTC be updating the display of the device, the M8 Prime would also have an updated processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805, which is likely to be available in September as well as an update of the pairing of the Duo camera to 18MP and 5MP (UltraPixel). While the details do appear to be a bit hazy, it wouldn’t be that unusual to see a second flagship device from HTC appear in September given that most other Android manufacturers have migrated to a biannual flagship cycle i.e. Sony, and likely LG. But as always with these rumours, we’ll have to wait and see.
What do you think about the existence of a HTC One M8 Prime? Would you like to get a device like this? Let us know what your thoughts are.

Gold, Platinum, or Rose Gold HTC One M8 available from Goldgenie for those with deep Pockets
We’ve previously heard of plans to bring out a 24 carat gold version of the HTC One M8, and even seen one gifted to T-Mobile CEO, John Legere. Gold-plating business Goldgenie, however, has their own plans in mind and now have available for purchase either a gold, platinum, or rose gold HTC One M8. And that’s 24 carat gold, of course. This isn’t the first time that Goldgenie has thought to modify HTC phones with precious metals having previously worked with last year’s HTC One and the HTC One Mini.
Naturally, these modified M8 devices are not cheap: the “cheapest” of the three, the gold HTC One M8, comes in at $2560.95 USD and the platinum one will set you back $2,830.95 USD. While that might seem a bit steep, you do get the bonus inclusion of a cherry oak finished box to store your M8 and its accessories, which seems entirely worth it. While the phone may be different on the outside, there have been no modifications to the hardware itself and the phones are fully unlocked so they can be used anywhere in the world.
To be honest, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much difference between the default chrome finish of the M8 and the platinum version, but that might just be my wallet talking. Let us know what you think about these Goldgenie plated devices.

WSJ: HTC begins outsourcing production

HTC has started calling on other companies to help build some of its products, reports the Wall Street Journal. Alleged, HTC has turned to Compal (Taiwan) and Wingtech (China) to manufacture its Desire family of phones. Designed to help cut costs, the move is likely a result of HTC’s Chairwoman Cher Wang’s more active involvement. HTC will continue producing the One line of smartphones in-house.

HTC One Mini 2 leak reveals no depth-sensing camera
When a Swedish carrier leaked the existence of an HTC One Mini 2, we weren’t exactly shocked, given the timing of the original One Mini’s arrival. We now have alleged pictures of said device courtesy of @evleaks and it fails to surprise in appearance either, looking nearly like its bigger sibling. However, judging by the render, the One Mini 2 (yes, that’s apparently the name) lacks the HTC One M8′s depth-sensing Duo Camera — meaning it’ll lack selective focus and other fancy effects. While there are three color choices (white, gray and champagne), no other features or specs are mentioned. However, prior leaks suggest a 4.5-inch, 720p screen, microSD slot and quad-core Snapdragon 400 CPU. Oddly, this image leak doesn’t line up with another supposed press render from a few days ago, so we’d counsel skepticism until it’s officially launched.

The real HTC One mini 2 press render has been revealed, still shows only one rear Camera
Yesterday, we posted an article that appeared to leak the design of the rumoured successor to the HTC One Mini, the so-called HTC One mini 2. What we didn’t know was that the picture was in fact a photoshop hoax (see the picture in question here), but thanks to leaker extraordinaire, evleaks, the record has been set straight today. In an image tweeted earlier today, we see three coloured variants in the HTC One mini 2 press render with a slightly different design to its bigger brother, the HTC One M8.
While the photoshopped photo from yesterday wasn’t far off, we do see some subtle design differences between the mini 2 and the M8, in particular the single rear camera and the single LED flash. Any further changes to the design are even more subtle, like the slightly less prominent BoomSound speakers, but it’s notable that the black bar below the screen is still present. We’re expecting hardware specifications which aren’t unlike those from the Motorola Moto G, but the price and availability of the phone probably won’t be known till after the device’s launch later this year.

If you want to make an Android phone with Google, here’s some of the rules
Before large (and even larger) sums of money were asked of Samsung and Apple, the legal brawl between the pair kept dragging a third party, Google, into the discussion. A big part of this was the Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (MADA) between the internet company and Samsung which laid out how the latter would support the former in patent claims. Now the spotlights on this agreement, with a recent class action suit claiming that parts violate antitrust laws. Recode‘s uploaded the agreements between Samsung, HTC and Google, which touch on some of the rules of making an Android smartphone.
According the paperwork, If manufacturers want to use a single Google app on their forthcoming Android phone, then you have to install all of them. Even Google Play Newstand. Other (obvious) points outline that Google must be the default search engine (we’re shocked), and that the search box (and some apps like Google Play, then Android Market), be “at least immediately adjacent to the Default Home Screen”. And if you’re a smartphone maker willing to forgo Google Maps, Gmail and the rest, well, there’s always that open source version.

HTC One (M8) Mini 2 leak reveals a single rear camera

Notorious leaker Evleaks has taken to Twitter to reveal what looks like the HTC One M8 Mini or what it is actually being called the HTC One Mini 2 according to the leak, dropping the M8 designation.
In addition to the name change, it seems that the HTC One Mini 2 won’t have the same Duo Camera setup as seen on the HTC One M8, but instead will have a single 13-Megapixel camera.

The upcoming HTC One Mini 2 will run Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the latest Sense 6.0 UI and will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor running at 1.7GHz. In addition, the device will have 1GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch display, and a 720 x 1280 resolution, with 16GB of internal storage via a microSD card.
So there doesn’t seem to be any surprises when it comes to the look of the device, but it seems HTC have chosen to drop the M8 naming convention the big brother device seems to have adopted to differentiate from its earlier version.

The HTC One Mini 2, aka HTC One M8 Mini, gets a leaked press render, confirms single rear Camera
Despite multiple leaks over the last few months that have alluded to its existence, we’ve always known that HTC was going to follow up their new flagship, the HTC One M8, with a ‘mini’ version; these mini versions tend to be smaller, less powerful versions of the flagship device with the only significant similarity being their appearance. Rumours have intensified over the last few days about the appearance of the device which has culminated in the above press render which appears to show the HTC One M8 mini or, as it’s apparently going to be officially known as, the HTC One mini 2.
As you will notice, the device only has a single rear camera, unlike the One M8 which has the dual rear cameras; this is most likely a cost saving measure. You will also notice that HTC has retained the on-screen menu buttons (and that lovely little black bar at the bottom) and it looks like the device will also benefit from Sense 6.0. Rumoured hardware specifications for the device include a quad-core Snapdragon 400, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, a 4.5-inch 1280×720 resolution display and Android 4.4; if those specs look familar, that would be because they are almost exactly the same as the specs for the 6-month-old Motorola Moto G. For HTC’s sake, I hope it’s priced similarly to the Moto G.
Would you be interested in a HTC One mini 2 if it turns out as the rumours say? Let us know what you think in the comments.

HTC ‘M8 Ace’ looking to be a powerhouse in a plastic body with Galaxy S5 Specs
HTC pokes fun at Samsung often about the plastic body and design of their devices when they talk about their flagship M7 and M8 phones. The HTC One M7 and M8 of course both have that sleek aluminum body that gives them a distinctive look and feel over the competitor. Apparently sources for Engadget have been leaking out a little bit of information that makes the upcoming and unannounced HTC M8 Ace, a bit of a trickster in a plastic body. The source claims that the M8 Ace will will in fact be wrapped in a plastic unibody housing vs the aluminum that everyone is in love with. Where things get a little more interesting is the specs that have been tossed out though. The M8 Ace will supposedly pack in a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz and sport a 5-inch 1080p display.
While hard fact details, like the amount of RAM, storage options and if it will still pull in the duo-camera seem to be absent from the leak, additional details emerge pegging the M8 Ace to be launched for $480. That would be full cost off-contract. The evleaks image seems to suggest that it will retain boom sound though.
We will have to wait and see what HTC is really up to, but I wouldn’t be against a more affordable off-contract priced version of the M8. Even if it was a plastic body. It would give consumers a great little device at a much more affordable price, especially if they are on a pre-paid account. It could work out to HTC’s advantage quite well. WHat do you guys think?
