HTC RECamera images leak ahead of October 8 event

HTC’s GoPro competitor has leaked ahead of their upcoming October 8th event, in which we’re also likely to see HTC’s smartwatch (which has been killed and resurrected numerous times already).
The images show a device that has, what is rumoured to be, a 16-Megapixel camera, a 170-degree Super Wide Angle Lens, underwater shooting capabilities, and slow motion video capture.

HTC’s camera focused accessory makes an early appearance
In about two weeks HTC will be showcasing something new at a press event scheduled in New York. The invite pointed towards a camera accessory of sorts. In a tip from an inside source we heard that the device would be of cylindrical shape, be waterproof, have a 16MP sensor with an ultra wide-angle lens and connect to your device with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. At least looking at the images that were recently pulled out by a redditer and the accompanying video.
It kind of looks like a snorkel. The earlier report offered up information pertaining to it being waterproof, at least to some degree. HTC has teased that aspect of the camera in the video that they published on a promotional recamera webpage.
The reddit poster also pulled out mentions of ReMoments. I assume this is what the app for Android and iOS will be called. To push things a long a little, HTC also opened up a twitter account that will apparently be dedicated to the camera. You can find it at @re_camera. It only offers up the single tweet below, but I am sure it will start to heat up closer to the event.
Taking a picture has traditionally meant you’re busy behind the camera, framing the scene. But what have you been missing?
— RE Camera (@re_camera) September 24, 2014
It should be a pretty good little accessory item of sorts for HTC to release, especially since initial indications point to cross platform support.WE will have to wait until the official announcement to see what HTC plans to price it at and when it will become available. What are your first thoughts and impressions from the video and images pulled out?

HTC hints that it’s unveiling an action camera on October 8th
Those claims that HTC is making an action camera just got much more concrete. The company has posted both a RECamera teaser site and a video (below) which not-so-subtly hint that the adventure-oriented shooter should launch on October 8th, the same day as HTC’s “Double Exposure” media event. While there aren’t many giveaways in the clip, it shows both a swimming pool dive and a wide-angle lens — this is undoubtedly a waterproof device meant to take on the likes of GoPro. There’s nothing here to confirm rumors that the camera will have a 16-megapixel sensor and wireless networking, but you’ll only have to wait a couple of weeks to get the full scoop.

Meet Engadget’s new buyer’s guide picks: The iPhone 6, Moto X and more!
Here at Engadget, we make good on our promises. So when we say we’re going to be updating our buyer’s guide more frequently, well, gosh darn, we mean it. Roughly two months after we re-launched the guide, we’re adding a bunch of new gadgets, including the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the new Moto X, HTC One M8 for Windows, the Acer C720 Chromebook, the NVIDIA Shield gaming tablet and the Moto 360 smartwatch. Of course, we also had to remove some of our original picks to make room for the new ones: The new, 5.2-inch Moto X takes the place of the old 4.7-inch one, while the Moto 360 overtakes the Samsung Gear Live — formerly our favorite Android Wear device. We’re also getting rid of all the BlackBerrys for now. That’s not to say BBM hold-outs should switch operating systems, but until we get to try the new BlackBerry Passport, we’re going to refrain from including those older models. Check out our guide right here, and stay tuned for more updates next month — who knows what we’ll be adding then!

Sony will focus on high-end smartphones to help right the ship
In case you haven’t heard, Sony is in a little bit of strife. After having a resoundingly successful 2013, Sony’s financial success has taken a turn for the worse, recently posting a 180 billion year “impairment” – their words, not ours – due to poor performance by its Xperia devices, particularly the smartphones. As a result, Sony has had to let go about 1,000 employees to help its situation and the changes haven’t stopped there. According to sources in Taiwan, Sony will focus on high-end smartphones and essentially downplay its mid to low-end offerings to try and recover some of its losses.
Sony had been well positioned to consolidate its position in the top 10 of all smartphone manufacturers, however its latest performance could eventually see it drop out the tail end of those 10. Its poor performance has been blamed on a recent surge in Chinese manufacturer activity and an inability to get a foothold in the U.S. market, something which should not be unfamiliar to our American readers. This is a very similar downturn to what happened with HTC not too long ago after it tried to dip its fingers into too many pies. HTC has since recovered much of its former glory – Sony looks to have taken the first steps that HTC took after it reported huge losses and will take some time to properly recover, possibly when it is time for the Xperia Z4 to launch.
What do you think about Sony’s new strategy of just focusing on high-end smartphones? Let us know your opinion.

Google chose HTC for the Nexus 9 to stop any one manufacturer gaining a monopoly
We’ve suspected its been coming for the longest time, but it’s always nice to find out a bit of back story. The Wall Street Journal has yesterday reported on the relationship between Google and HTC and how the Nexus 9 tablet apparently has come to be. According to WSJ, Google chose HTC for the Nexus 9 to stop “any one manufacturer gaining a monopoly”, something Google has been constantly wary of with Android’s biggest manufacturer, Samsung. Of course, this fits right in with Google’s behaviour in changing up hardware partners and ironically, despite not having a tablet of their own, HTC might just be the best for a tablet in 2014.
HTC exited the tablet market in 2012 with the HTC Flyer, a somewhat uninspiring device, so the Taiwanese company might seem like an unusual choice to produce what is probably going to be one of the most popular devices of 2014. However, HTC is widely accepted to have made two of the best Android smartphones over the past two years, and while they struggle to compete with the volumes of larger manufacturers like LG and Samsung, their hallmark has become quality over quantity, something which could make a HTC Nexus device amazing. Of course, Google and HTC have declined to comment on any speculation of a partnership, but it seems almost a done deal that a Nexus 9 tablet is going to appear within the next month or two.

HTC will mark its return to tablets with Google’s Nexus 9
Rumors of an HTC-made Nexus device have swirled for some time, but only recently have details of a possible next-generation tablet started to become apparent. Not long after NVIDIA inadvertently leaked that the Taiwanese company is linking up with Google to launch the Nexus 9, the Wall Street Journal has added even more credibility to reports by stating that HTC engineers have been regularly flying to Google’s Mountain View HQ in order to finalize the 9-inch device. As part of a patent lawsuit against Qualcomm and Samsung earlier this month, NVIDIA revealed that it would be providing the muscle for the Android L-powered slate, which is expected to feature its Tegra K1 processor and launch within the third quarter. However, we’re now just over a week away from the end of September, so it looks increasingly likely that we’ll see something official next month. Remember, Google has a history of scheduling events in October.
