Hangouts can now take your Google Voice messages

Google's Brussels office

Google Voice has only had a limited tie-in with Hangouts so far, but it now looks like the two are coming together in earnest. Android Police notes that you can now set up Hangouts to receive Google Voice text messages and voicemail, whether you’re on mobile or the desktop. Switch on the feature and you won’t have to jump between apps to deal with conversations based on where they came from. You may not want to migrate just yet, though — replies aren’t working perfectly at the moment, and it otherwise appears that Google flicked the switch a little early. There should be a Hangouts update soon, though, so those glitches might not stick around for much longer.

Google Voice is getting integrated into Hangouts, reportedly rolling out now

Google Voice is getting integrated into HangoutsAfter what seems like an age of kick and screaming for this feature to be implemented, it appears the inevitable is finally nigh: Google Voice is getting integrated into Hangouts, and it’s rolling out to your Hangouts app now. You may see the above prompt in your Hangouts app now, however it seems like the integrated functionality seems to be a little hairy at best. Android Police is reporting that messages can be received fine, however replies seems to have a few teething issues. Seeing as there isn’t an update necessary to get these features, it seems very likely that an update to Hangouts will be coming this week with Google‘s usual round of updates. That is, if this feature wasn’t just accidentally activated.

Integration of Google Voice into Hangouts has been rumoured since late last year when it was mentioned by ol’ Vic Gundotra, the then head of Google+. Gundotra said then that messaging for Google Voice would be implemented in early 2014, but as we can all see, it’s been a little longer than that. Still, better late than never, and from the general vibe of the news, most people are just relieved that Google Voice integration is finally with us.

Are you happy that Google Voice integration with Hangouts is now possible? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Applause for Google Hangouts lets you give live broadcasts a thumbs up

Google+ Hangouts On Air lets you ask your favorite broadcasters questions, but what if you want to give them feedback without littering the Q&A feed with snarky, off-topic judgments? Well, now you can. Google just updated its live broadcasting service with Applause: a simple feature that allows viewers to give live streams a thumbs up or thumbs down in real time. Feedback is instantly charted below the video, offering broadcasters and viewers alike an at-a-glance view of how the stream is performing. That’s all there is to it — check out Google’s short announcement at the source link below.

Moto 360 teardown reveals ancient chips, clever tech and a small battery

iFixit's Moto 360 teardown in progress

Motorola has been willing to offer a quick peek at the Moto 360’s inner workings, but let’s face it: that doesn’t really go deep enough to sate your curiosity, does it? You don’t have to worry, though, as iFixit has torn apart the circular smartwatch to examine every last detail. In the end, the hardware is an odd mix of the latest technology with surprisingly old components. While that round LCD and inductive charger are pretty forward-thinking, the teardown also confirms the presence of TI’s OMAP3630 processor — a chip that hasn’t been cutting edge since that Droid 2 you rocked back in 2010.

There’s also a bit of a rude surprise in iFixit’s unit. The DIY repair shop spotted a 300mAh battery, which is decidedly smaller than the officially claimed 320mAh. What gives? Motorola tells Computerworld that 320mAh is only the “typical” figure, and that 300mAh is the “minimum” you’ll get. That’s bound to rub a lot of would-be owners the wrong way, although the company says it’s thinking of showing both the minimum and typical figures in the future. However you feel about that discrepancy, you probably won’t want to double-check yourself given the tricky disassembly process; this teardown will likely be the closest you get to seeing what’s under the hood.

Netflix makes it easier to marathon shows using your Chromecast

Netflix post-play on Chromecast

One of the most alluring (if dangerous) features of Netflix is its auto-play feature — that’s how you end up watching half of House of Cards when you only meant to check out one episode. Chromecast owners haven’t had that luxury, however, so Netflix is releasing new versions of both its Android and iOS apps that enable the serial viewing option when you’re using Google’s streaming media stick. It works much like you’d expect if you were watching on the mobile device itself, but gives you extra time to reach for that phone buried in the couch cushions. You should see both apps surface within the next few days, and PC support is due “soon.”

LG’s G Watch just got a $50 price cut in the Google Play Store

A handful of new smartwatches unveiled at IFA and beyond (we’re looking at you, Moto 360 and Apple Watch) are already making some still newish models look a little long in the tooth. Take LG’s poor G Watch for instance – it’s only been on the market for about two months and it’s already got a rounder, handsomer big brother with a slightly better screen to boot. That may just be why the OG G Watch has just gone on sale in ye olde Google Play store, where you can now lay claim to your own for $179 (or $50 off the original price tag). You’ve only got until September 23 to snag one at the reduced price, but hey – we wouldn’t be surprised to see that sale price stick around a little longer just to help move more hardware.

Nest devices now talk to the rest of your automated home

Nest Learning Thermostat

Nest’s thermostat and Protect smoke detector may help automate your home, but they haven’t actually talked directly to home automation systems so far — a bit of a discrepancy, don’t you think? All should be well now, though, since the Works with Nest program has just expanded to support the whole-home automation gear from Control4, Crestron, RTI and URC. If you’re fortunate enough to have one of those systems, you can now integrate Nest equipment with home theaters, lighting and anything else that talks to one of the supported control hubs.

To top it off, Nest is also tying into Google’s other big household technology acquisition, Dropcam. Its internet-savvy security cameras can now react to whatever your Nest equipment is doing. If your thermostat says you’re away, Dropcam can turn on motion sensing. The smoke protector, meanwhile, can tell Dropcam to record a brief video to prove that there’s a real fire. It’ll be very expensive to try out any these improvements if you don’t already have the necessary setup, but they promise to alleviate a lot of the headaches that come with managing a technology-rich household.

Now Google Play Movies & TV for iOS works offline too

Before you leave the house for that trip to the middle of nowhere (or if you simply have shoddy internet connection), make sure to update your Google Play Movies and TV for iOS. The latest version gives you the power to save any flick or TV show episode you want to watch offline at a later time — the same feature Google added to the app for Chromebooks a few months ago. Hopefully, everything you download (over WiFi only, as always) gets you through a rough trip or a particularly bad day for streaming. The update should hit your iPhones and iPads soon, but those who don’t have the app yet can download it from iTunes.

Android 5.0 Lion? New leak shows “Nexus 5 2014″ running interesting software

Android 5.0 LionGet your grain of salt ready, because you’re going to need it for this rumour. According to a leak from EMT Leaks, a device specified as a “Nexus 5 2014” has been spotted and boasts some very interesting specs – more on that later. Perhaps most interest among all the details is the fact the device is running software called “Android 5.0 Lion“. Apart from being a bit left field, “Lion” is actually another trademark of Nestle à la the Lion Bar, which begs the question: is Google still in cahoots with Nestle for future builds of Android? If true, this would be the second time Google has switched out their internal build name, rumoured to be Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP), the first being of course Android KitKat, previously known as Key Lime Pie.

The second most interesting thing about this rumour is the device itself. We would have expected the device to be the Nexus 6 or Nexus X, but the appearance of a “Nexus 5 2014″ suggests this is the true name of the device, or Google will be refreshing the device along with a larger phablet device. Whatever the case, the device looks great: Snapdragon 805, 3GB RAM, and 12MP camera – a definitive upgrade from its predecessor. But as we mentioned at the start, we’d definitely suggest taking this news with a grain of salt as we can’t be sure any of this is true.

What do you think about the possibility of “Android 5.0 Lion”? Let us know your opinion in the comments below.

Verizon will sell the Moto 360 with a metal band on November 11th

Moto 360 with a metal band

If you refuse to wear a Moto 360 smartwatch until it’s equipped with a metal wristband, you now have a firmer date than “fall” to mark on your calendar. Verizon says that it will ship this slightly ritzier version of Motorola’s wearable in both black and silver on November 11th for the expected $300. It’s not certain that Verizon will be the first out of the gate with the extra-shiny 360, but its timing should serve as a good yardstick even if you don’t plan to buy your watch at Big Red. And don’t forget: if two months is simply too long to wait, you can always buy the leather edition now and upgrade to metal later for $80.
