Google employees are running Android L on the Nexus 4

Render of Nexus 4 running Android L

When Google released a developer preview for Android L at its I/O event this summer, owners of Nexus devices were excited. However, this excitement was short lived for owners of the Nexus 4. Google only released the preview for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013). Many believed that this meant the Nexus 4 was not going to receive the next big Android update.

Recently, it appears that a few Google employees are testing a version of Android L on their Nexus 4′s. Some Google+ users have spotted two different users claiming to be running “L” on their Nexus 4′s on code.google.com. One even specifies he or she is running build number LRW52G. This has gotten Nexus 4 owners excited because it could mean that Google will update the N4 to the latest Android version. Unfortunately, just because there are employees running “L” on a Nexus 4 does not at all mean that it will receive the update; although, the Nexus 4 has hardware that could easily run Android L considering that it will be running on the lesser-powered Android One devices that recently launched. Only time will tell if Google will update it’s two year old Nexus, but these recent findings do give N4 owners more hope.

Do you think Google will update the Nexus 4 to Android L? Tell us in the comments!

HTC will mark its return to tablets with Google’s Nexus 9

HTC One M8

Rumors of an HTC-made Nexus device have swirled for some time, but only recently have details of a possible next-generation tablet started to become apparent. Not long after NVIDIA inadvertently leaked that the Taiwanese company is linking up with Google to launch the Nexus 9, the Wall Street Journal has added even more credibility to reports by stating that HTC engineers have been regularly flying to Google’s Mountain View HQ in order to finalize the 9-inch device. As part of a patent lawsuit against Qualcomm and Samsung earlier this month, NVIDIA revealed that it would be providing the muscle for the Android L-powered slate, which is expected to feature its Tegra K1 processor and launch within the third quarter. However, we’re now just over a week away from the end of September, so it looks increasingly likely that we’ll see something official next month. Remember, Google has a history of scheduling events in October.

Oculus wants a VR app store for every device you can think of

When we saw the Samsung Gear VR at IFA, Oculus CTO John Carmack showed us a basic version of an app store made for mobile virtual reality. But when the headset ships to consumers sometime later this year, the VR outfit has bigger plans. It’s rebranding the current Oculus Share “store” into Oculus Platform and turning it into a launcher of sorts for apps and other experiences, as noticed by TechCrunch. Platform will act as common store across the firm’s entire platform including the Rift and mobile. Like the prototype from earlier this month, the store will exist within virtual reality and will house games, apps and stuff like the virtual movie theater, Oculus Cinema.

The plan is eventually to have it available on just about any platform you can think of: Android, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, iOS, Safari and Windows Phone. In case you were wondering just how seriously Oculus and Samsung (OcuSam? SamUlus?) were about this whole thing, that list should help erase any doubts. What’s more, when Oculus releases its own apps to Platform it’ll release them as open source as well. Want the Oculus-branded movie theater to look more like your local multiplex? You’ll be able to fix that.

Samsung’s Galaxy A5 device leaked in pictures and specs

SM-A500-GALAXY-A5-5

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha, one of the nicest looking phones Samsung has ever released, is now the inspiration behind the new Samsung “A” line of devices. The first device in this line will be called the A5, and it is the start of something good.

Details for the Samsung A5 have been leaked by sammobile.com. The device will be considered a mid-range device with a  5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, a 13-megapixel camera, a Snapdragon 400 processor, 2,330 mAh battery, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

The most interesting thing here will be with the material that Samsung uses to make the device. The A5 won’t be made of metal, or plastic. According to Sammobile’s source, it will be a material that feels just like metal, but it will be as cheap to manufacture like plastic.

If samsung can find the sweet spot between the very popular S line and the premium look and feel of the Alpha device, They will be looking at a great line of devices.

Let us know what you think of this new phone, the Samsung A5.

The 10 phones that fueled the big-screen revolution

Dell Streak

It’s safe to say that Steve Jobs was off the mark when he declared that no one would buy big smartphones — they’ve become popular enough that Apple itself is now making large iPhones. But how did these supersized devices escape their niche status to become the must-haves they are today? The transformation didn’t happen overnight. It took a succession of ever-bigger phones to spark the public imagination and prove that huge screens were here to stay. We’ve rounded up 10 of the most important examples — head on over to our gallery see how enormous became the new normal.

Google for iOS updated with TV recommendations, better transit cards

We know, all your friends rushing out to buy new iPhones and you’re stuck with that ‘outdated’ iPhone 5s you just bought. That’s what happens when you go swimming without checking your pockets first. Still, it’s not all bad: there’s a Google for iOS update available, and it’s completely free! In addition to promising faster search results, this minor update adds “What to Watch” TV recommendations to Google’s list of content cards. Tend to watch your television at a friends house? No worries — the update has added multiple route options to transit cards, too. You’ll get there in no time.

Google’s easing back on G+ sign-ups for new email accounts

Need to make a new Gmail account but don’t want to deal with creating a mandatory Google+ profile to go with it? Don’t sweat it, because Mountain View’s removed that requirement to join its ailing social network, and once again signing up for the search giant’s email service takes you directly to the inbox without any fuss. As evidenced in marketing blog Wordstream‘s screenshot below, however, you’ll still need a G+ account if you want to futz around with the rest of Google’s services. Meaning, if leaving reviews for apps or media in Google Play and uploading videos to YouTube is totally your bag, you’ll have to take the plunge and “upgrade” your Gmail account regardless. Still, for those who just need to create a burner email address to give out to less-than-trustworthy websites, the process is a bit less annoying now.

YouTube throws a lot more money at Originals content partners

FRANCE-LOGO-YOUTUBE

Google has gone on record as saying it loves original YouTube content like Epic Rap Battles of History, and now it looks as though the outfit is doubling down on such. How so? Well it seems that its fully-stocked studio spaces for partners are just the beginning. YouTube is investing millions into its partner channels, according to Recode. And it’s part of a more concerted push into different types of content, replete with varying lengths and formats, too. That includes partnering with Hollywood producers, according to Recode‘s sources, which naturally gives Google something to sell. The wording on head of YouTube Originals Alex Carloss’ blog post makes it sound like the firm’s existing pool of talent will be commissioned to do new shows — albeit with a heavier infusion of cash than they’re used to. It sounds like it could be a solid deal for everyone involved: affording content creators more money for their work and pushing YouTube’s hopes of becoming a more TV-like experience another step closer to reality.

HTC Nexus 9 rumors claim an October 16th release date

Nexus 9

For those wanting a large screen tablet and a stock Android experience, the selection has been limited. The most common choice is Google’s Nexus 10, but unfortunately that tablet has not seen an update since its original release. Google spent more time refining their smaller Nexus 7 and left the Nexus 10 in the dust. Many have been waiting for a new Nexus 10 but have seen nothing. Recently, rumors have been spreading that Google is collaborating with HTC on a 9-inch tablet which is of course being called the Nexus 9. Fortunately, it looks like this device might be announced fairly soon.

This week MoDaCo’s Paul O’Brien posted a tip from an anonymous source saying that HTC is planning on announcing its Nexus 9 tablet on October 16. Earlier this year, rumors were suggesting a release date of October 9th. Whether this information was incorrect or the date was just pushed back is unknown, but this new information is being considered true.

Since a Motorola Nexus 6 is also rumored for this year, it would not be surprising if Google released both devices at the same time. Hopefully, we will see some invites to a Google event in the next few months which would confirm the launch of something big. So mark your calendar for October 16 because all signs point to a reveal of the Nexus 9 and maybe even the Nexus 6.

Are you waiting for the Nexus 9 and Nexus 6? Tell us in the comments!
