Google releases animated ads showing off the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9

Google_Animated_Ad_Nexus_6_Reveal

If you happened to watch last night’s Walking Dead episode online, you might have noticed a few new ads from Google. Yup, they quietly released these because they like having fun with us.

There are three 30 second ads in all with the first one revealing the Nexus 6 with Android L navigation buttons and a new ringtone, while the second one shows the Nexus 9. You will also notice the “Be Together, Not The Same” theme here implying that the Nexus 6 is very big and might not be for everyone. The third ad continues this theme, but doesn’t reveal any of the devices.

These ads (see below) were uploaded to YouTube by Android Authority, but if you saw them live, they were clickable. They took you to a page that isn’t live at the moment.

We could very well see one or both of these devices officially announced tomorrow. Are you guys excited yet?

Google’s latest ads show off the fresh new face of Android

If you happened to be watching The Walking Dead last night like everybody else, you may have noticed some clever new Android ads. One showed several Droid-looking characters checking their devices, with the smallest pulling out a cartoonishly-huge Android L smartphone. The others flaunted Android Wear and a tablet, while the “Be Together, Not the Same” tagline pointed viewers to a (currently dead) link. Naturally, that’s led to speculation — many think the device shown is the rumored Nexus 6 or X. That’s a stretch, but we do know that Google has a surprisingly great new ad campaign hyping Android L on multiple devices, along with that mysterious link. With that, we do expect to see new stuff soon — very soon.

Anki Drive will now work with (some of) your Android devices, too

Ever watched your iOS-device toting friends playing modern-day Scalextric slot cars and wondering when it’d be your turn? Anki has announced that Anki Drive is now available to use on your Android device, that is, if you’re rocking a Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, 4 or 10.1 (2014 Edition). Those not hoisted to Samsung’s mast aren’t excluded totally, as Nexus 5 owners are also able to join in on the fun. In its defense, the company points out that the slow adoption of Bluetooth LE, tech necessary for Drive to work, has hampered progress bringing the game to Google’s party. There’s also no cross-platform racing just yet, but is something the company has pledged to work on in the future. Still, if you’re yet to give it a go, Anki cut the price down to $150 / £150 last month, so maybe this is the moment you’ve been waiting for.

Get satellite images from Google in every new Chrome tab

Taking a virtual tour through Google Earth and Street View is great and all, but sometimes you just quickly need to see a beautiful photo of the planet to make your day. That’s where this new Earth View plug-in for Chrome comes in. Earth View shows you satellite images from Google Maps every time you open a new tab on Chrome, from mountain and forest landscapes to aerial views of the ocean and cities in the US. And if you want to explore more of the location on screen (say, the city of Aznalcóllar, Spain pictured above), just click the globe at the bottom right corner to see more satellite images. The downside is that it wipes out the old items living in each new tab, such as your recently visited pages and quick tabs. But if you don’t mind and would rather see pictures of our planet, you can download the plug-in right now from the Chrome Web Store.

Leaked Google Nexus 6 ad makes amusing light of the phone’s rumoured size

Google Nexus 6 adEveryone in the Android community can almost smell the new Nexus 6 about to burst forth into existence, and despite a large number of people denouncing the device’s alleged large size, there also appear to be a lot of people who are still going to be getting it. Not one to be without a sense of humour, a leaked Google Nexus 6 ad is doing the rounds on the internet and appears to be an almost perfect, hilarious take on what the Nexus 6 represents to the Android and smartphone community. Take a look at the ad which was (thankfully) recorded:

The ad ends with the motto  “Android: Be Together, Not The Same”, a nice fitting way to say that Google is trying to cater to everyone within the community but also trying to innovate and unite the community. The video also shows a link which currently goes to a Google hosted page that doesn’t exist yet, but presumably will go live once the Nexus 6 (and presumably Android L) are officially announced. It’s hard to say whether the rumoured 5.9-inch Nexus device is going to be as popular as last year’s more normally sized Nexus 5, but among the Android community at least, few can complain about a good price on a Quad HD display with stock Android L.

What’s in the box: Could this be the Nexus 9 that Jeff Gordon just tweeted about?

Nexus 9While Google is being typically quiet around the time of its device and software releases, HTC can’t seem to stop talking about so-called confidential information. After HTC President of North Asia, Jack Tong, “accidentally” confirmed that the Nexus 9 was HTC’s springboard back into the tablet market, Jeff Gordon, HTC Global Online Communications Manager, has been seen tweeting about a cardboard box. And what exactly is inside this cardboard box? Well, Gordon says of the box “Something amazing, beautiful and highly confidential just arrived.”

Now, unless HTC forgot to announce something at its Double Exposure event earlier this week, we’re pretty certain that inside that box will be a new Nexus 9. We won’t have long to see what it likely looks like as all bets are on October 15th being the day that Google announces the new tablet, one day ahead of the rumoured announcement of Apple’s new iPads. Devious, no? Priced at an alleged $399 USD, the Nexus 9 isn’t going to be the cheapest Nexus tablet ever, but it will be packing some intense hardware such as NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 processor, 3GB RAM and an almost 9-inch Quad HD display.

What do you think about Gordon’s tweet? Let us know your opinion in the comments below.

Google Express shopping service grows: new cities, partners and Prime-style subscriptions

Google started experimenting with same-day deliveries early last year, but now it’s getting serious. Google Express (shortened from Google Shopping Express) is expanding its service areas from just the Bay Area, parts of NYC and Los Angeles — now it’s shipping goods from local merchants to their customers in Chicago, Washington D.C. and Boston. There’s a slew of new retailers on board including Barnes & Noble, PetSmart and Sports Authority, and in the Bay Area it’s added alcohol and fresh foods to the delivery menu. One small catch? Starting today, Google will charge for those deliveries, which used to be free. Nonmembers can can pay $5 per order, or join the service (sort of like Amazon Prime) for $95 a year, or $10 per month.

That membership covers free same-day or overnight delivery on orders over $15 (booze is an extra $3 per order for nonmembers, $0.01 extra, per store, for members), “first dibs” on delivery windows, and can be shared across a household, but the good news is that there’s a three month free trial. By comparison, Amazon is charging $99 per year for its sprawling Prime subscription that covers speedy deliveries, music and even movies, and $299 per year to be a part of its Amazon Prime Fresh service. The Prime Fresh package offers free same- or next-day early morning delivery of orders over $35, with over 500,000 items on offer and the standard Prime service included.

VP of Google Shopping Sameer Samat tells the WSJ in an interview that Google is ” trying to build an experience that doesn’t just focus on the world of the desktop,” and that we should expect more things that blend the online and physical worlds. The tagline is “your everyday delivered” — after search, mail and maps, are you ready to hand your shopping over to Google too?

Publishing houses are throwing book deals at YouTube ‘stars’

<img alt="Daily Grace Helbig" data-caption="Daily Grace Helbig speaking at VidCon 2012 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

Let’s say you can’t get enough of it’sGrace (above) on YouTube but you’re taking a week-long no-tech camping trip soon and aren’t excited about missing her wit and charm. Well, host Grace Helbig’s book Grace’s Guide: The Art of Pretending to Be a Grown-up is out next week, so that won’t be a problem for much longer. She isn’t alone, either, as other YouTubers are getting publishing deals as well, according to The Wall Street Journal. Alfie Deyes of Pointless Blog fame and style/make-up vlogger Michelle Phan have tomes out and en route, respectively, too. All have subscribers by the millions (Phan has over 7 million), and publishing houses are apparently hopeful that their online success translates to reaching teens, getting them to post about the books on Twitter, Instagram and probably Tumblr too.

Entertainment production house Dreamworks SKG is getting in on the action with a pair of YouTube-based books too. WSJ notes that this could be a way to combat the (unpopular) way YouTube splits ad revenue with its content creators and fill in the tip-jar gaps. There isn’t a guarantee that this will work out in the longterm for any of the involved parties, especially considering that it’s relatively new ground and watching video clips online is more or less free whereas books cost money up front. There’s also the matter of the time and attention span that it takes to watch a video rife with quick cuts and other editing techniques, versus that of reading a book. If these early deals prove successful, though, it isn’t a stretch to imagine that they’ll become more and more common.

Former Google executive hired by Xiaomi for push into India

xiaomi_logo

The future of Xiaomi is not found in its homeland China. The company is looking at new markets for expansion. It is one of the reasons that Hugo Barra made the jump from Google to Xiaomi. Now, another former Googler is heading out to join Barra. Xiaomi has hired Jai Mani, who worked on Google Play and other items from 2009 until 2013, to lead the Chinese company into India. Barra and Mani do have a history of working with one another at Google.

Here is some of what Hugo Barra had to say about Mani’s hiring:

“The first person we hired is someone who’s going to be the glue between our users in India, product feedback that we receive, and the engineering team we have in Beijing as well as the engineering team that we are going to be building fairly soon in India.”

How much will the Nexus 6 cost? Paul O’Brien thinks £450 is a good number

Nexus 6 costWe’re quickly bearing down on the suspected release date of at least the Nexus 9, but some of us are infinitely more fixated on the release of Google‘s new smartphone, the Nexus 6. Whether that happens on October 15th or towards the end of the month, one of the biggest questions that is going around, that isn’t to do with its size, is how much will the Nexus 6 cost. At 5.9-inches and a Quad HD display, a similar price to the Nexus 5 would almost be too good to be true, but Paul O’Brien is getting his opinion out there early.

O’Brien, who is best known as founder of MoDaCo, postulates that the new Nexus will cost a very pretty £450, or less, but probably close to that. For reference, the soon-to-be outgoing Nexus 5 sells for £299, which is significantly less than the alleged price of the Nexus 6 and much more than most Nexus owners have ever paid. If there is any solace to be taken from this news, it’s that the Moto X 2014 costs around £420, which does mean you’re getting a Quad HD screen for a steal. Still, this is all just conjecture so we’ll have to wait for Google’s official word to see if any of this is true.

How much do you think the Nexus 6 is going to cost? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
