Google to speed up Chrome with the next version of HTTP

Google Inc. To Announce Earns

Google is giving up on its homegrown SPDY protocol, which aimed to deliver a faster web browsing experience in Chrome than tried and true HTTP. Instead, it’s adopting HTTP/2 — an upgraded version of the protocol that’s close to being standardized — in Chrome 40 in the next few weeks. All of that working developing SPDY wasn’t for nothing, though. Google says HTTP/2 includes several features that evolved from its protocol, including multiplexing and header compression, both of which allows you to efficiently make multiple page requests at once. Don’t expect your web browsing to speed up immediately with HTTP/2 — it’ll take some time for Google, other browser makers, and developers to fully take advantage of its many improvements — but it lays the groundwork for a faster and safer web over the next few years. As for SPDY, Google says it’ll dump support for that entirely in early 2016.

Google Play Store 5.2 released, paving the way for an update focused on enterprise and vouchers [APK Download]

play_store

Google has released the next version of the Play Store, version 5.2, that is mainly about squashing bugs.

There are a few extras included in the APK that does seem to indicate that 5.2 is setting the stage for a much larger, future update.

In looking at the details of the APK, you’ll notice the Google store is adding some things to its Enterprise services. This is mainly centered around companies having the ability to host private apps that only employees can see. Now companies will be able to not only restrict who can see the apps, but what networks they are downloadable on or are able to be updated on.

Additionally, Talk Android reported on the quickly posted and removed Chrome for Work app a few weeks ago. It may be possible these types of apps will be making their debut when Google launches a real refresh to the Play Store.

There’s also a curious bit about vouchers. It appears that Google will be rolling out a program soon that would allow the giving of vouchers in specific sections of the Play Store, like Movies or Newsstand.

Android Authority this week

nexus 6 vs iphone 6 plus aa (22 of 24)

With MWC looming, more leaks and rumors about the stars of the show are emerging. This week, we learned more details about the HTC One (M9) and the Galaxy S6/S Edge. Manufacturers and carriers pushed Lollipop updates to several devices, but the most interesting Lollipop news was a total surprise: Android 5.1 was spotted running on Android One devices shipped in Indonesia, and with no official word from Google, speculation is heating up. Finally, the first Lollipop-based Paranoid Android ROM has arrived this week.

Inside AA HQ

It was another week of behind-the-scenes work for the AA team (and the Sound Guys team, and the tiny TabTimes team). Derek and Darcy are working hard on our product database – it’s been long in the making, but we think your patience (and our effort) will be worth it. The app redesign is coming along nicely, and hopefully we’ll have the big update ready by early spring. We’re also making plans for MWC (three weeks to go!) and it looks like we’ll have a big team on the ground this year.

Our YouTube team just got stronger – following stints at some of the most popular technology channels around, Taylor Martin has joined Android Authority. Taylor will be doing how-to’s, tips and tricks, and reviews, and will help us continue our stint as a leading mobile technology channel. Watch Taylor’s Meet the Team video, and don’t be shy, he loves your comments.

On the editorial side, Mark Hearn will be providing you with smart insight into all things tech. Formerly with Engadget, 9to5Google, and others, Mark’s first piece (on the casual  user’s misunderstanding of Android) has been a hit, with almost 200 comments and hundreds of shares. Read it here.

Google buys an app that helps you privately share photos

Google Photos on Android

Remember those murmurs that Google would detach its photo service from its social networking? It just took steps that could make this split a practical reality. The search firm has snapped up the creators of Odysee, a mobile app that can automatically share photos in private as well as send your phone snapshots to your PC at home. The team (Nimbuz) isn’t specific about its future plans beyond promises of more “amazing products,” but it’s joining the Google+ group. That’s an unusual move for a developer that specializes in keeping pictures out of the public eye, but it’d make sense if Google wants a photo platform that can stand on its own two feet. Whatever Google’s intentions, it’s acting quickly. Odysee has already vanished from app stores, and the service shuts down on February 23rd.

Why we won’t be seeing Google Glass for awhile and why it’s going to look different next time around

Google Glass has had an interesting run, to say the very least. It was the toast of the tech industry when it was announced in 2012, featuring in all kinds of mainstream media (even The Simpsons), but the honeymoon ended much too early. Rumours that the wearable device would be available commercially soon were shot when […]

Google utilizing Hangouts to help sell Android and Chrome products

Google-Hangouts-logoGoogle originally launched Helpouts so users could give live technical assistance over Google Hangouts, which was a great and unique way to use the instant messaging service. Now it looks like the company is utilizing the Helpouts platform to sell Android and Chrome products to potential buyers.

The program is still in a testing phase, but customers can jump into a live stream to learn about and discuss products, including Google phones and tablets and Chromebooks, although it doesn’t include things like Nest and Google Glass, at least for the time being. The chat agents can answer questions to help you pick out what device is right for you, and they can even help you with some basic troubleshooting in case you run into issues with your devices.

Although the service is still in a beta phase, Google wants to make this an easily accessible way to get help with your devices. The company plans on extending this support to physical locations, where a customer can go to a “help desk” and get live support over the internet. It seems more convenient to just do it from your laptop, but hey, Google has always liked to test the waters with weird ideas.

Right now Google isn’t broadly advertising this service, but if it goes well, expect to see it put front and center to bring new users into Google’s ecosystem.

Chrome OS devices for education and business can now be locked remotely if lost or stolen

Samsung Chromebook [3] - aa

Google has just issued an update to the Chrome OS Admin Console that should come in handy for educators and businesses. The update enables both business/enterprise and education devices running Chrome OS to be locked remotely if the devices are lost or stolen. To do so, ask your IT admin to lock the device remotely from the web-based control system. If you’re an IT professional that works with Chromebooks, head to this link to learn how.

Once the Chrome OS device is in its disabled state, the thief will be presented with the image below upon booting up the Chromebook. The person who turns on the device will be presented the lock screen with the school’s or company’s phone number and address, likely to shame them into returning the device back to its original owner.

chromeos-lost

Unfortunately, this feature is disabled for personal use Chromebooks, so don’t think you’re in the clear if you happen to misplace your computer. There’s no telling whether or not Google will add a similar feature to personal Chromebooks in the future, but we’ll be sure to update you if they do.

Latest Google Maps update brings Local Guides feature to the app [APK Download]

gmaps-localguides

Yesterday, Google introduced a new update to the Maps application with a feature known as Local Guides. Although the update has gradually begun rolling out on devices, a large majority of the users still haven’t seen it. But don’t worry, as we have the APK download link right here for you.

The Local Guides feature is the biggest addition to this version 9.4.0 update to the app. This is a system which lets you rate and review places that you frequent in order to help future visitors. This could be pretty effective for businesses as well. It’s pretty much like Yelp, but integrated directly within Google Maps.

Users can sign up to be one of the Local Guides in their area from Google’s sign-up page. Once you’re done, make sure you grab the new update from the link below. But make sure you enable the installation of apps from third party sources before you proceed.
