Huawei confirmed to make the next Nexus phone
Last week we told you that not one, but two Nexus phones could get launched this year, and it was rumored that LG and Huawei would be the makers. Today we are getting further confirmation on Huawei as the Director of China Research at iSuppli, Kevin Yang, has confirmed it.
If you look at this in hindsight, it can’t be a surprise since Huawei is so up and coming right now, it’s ridiculous. They are sitting as the 3rd phone manufacturer in the world in terms of market share and they made a huge splash with a very nice looking Android Wear smartwatch. It will be interesting to see if Huawei utilizes their own Kirin processor in the phone.
It still hasn’t been officially confirmed if there will indeed be two Nexus handsets, but as I said before, it makes the most sense to offer new versions of the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 since Google cannot offer a Nexus 7 phone for obvious reasons.

Google will call its MVNO carrier ‘Google LTE-A’
On Monday, Sundar Pichai confirmed that Google is indeed developing its own MVNO carrier. We have learned today that the service, backed by existing wireless carriers, will be called Google LTE-A. The company launched a Twitter account for the MVNO carrier and that exposed the name and the image seen above. It is rather generic; however. Google likely wanted to keep things as simple as possible for consumers.
The following was the description provided by Google before being removed:
With @googlefiber, LTE-A will be the next generation cellular network, brought to you by @google.

Prepare for Google Contacts to be refreshed on the web
Many of the services that Google operates have been given a new look over the last few months. Providing users with the same look across different services allows for easier use and, of course, it looks great. An area that has seriously lacked for Google is Google Contacts. Finally, Google has redesigned Contacts on the web to feature contacts, circles, and frequently contacted people.
Hit the break for the a list of the new features:
- Easily get rid of duplicates: Identify duplicate contacts and the dismiss, merge, or remove them
- Keep your contacts up to date automatically: All contact information offered at a glance with an option to edit
- See your recent emails & meetings: Collect information from recent emails and meetings to attach with a contact
The new Google Contacts can be explored by clicking here.

Revamped Google Contacts gains visual refresh and gets rid of duplicate entries

Google has released a preview to Google Contacts in Gmail that brings a much-needed visual refresh and a number of new features to make our lives easier. The service will now pool together all of your contacts, circles, and most frequently-contacted users in Gmail to make it easier to find certain people. A few other notable features are also included in the update, so let’s dive right in.
The enhancement that will be most welcomed by users is the revamped “Find duplicates” feature. Now, when you go to the new Google Contacts page, the service will detect duplicate contacts and ask you if you’d like to merge them together. So far, this is working out quite well. I didn’t even know I had any duplicates, and Contacts told me I had 18 that could be merged.
Next, Google will now keep your contacts up to date by pulling in info from users’ Google+ profiles. This will make it easy to stay up to date on users who change cities, jobs or even names. Last but not least, clicking on a contact will now show you your recent conversations with that user, including emails and meetings.
The update to Google Contacts will begin rolling out in the coming weeks, but Google has provided a preview of the update. If you’d like to check out the new Google Contacts preview, head here to do so. And unfortunately, just like Inbox, Google Apps users aren’t invited to the new experience quite yet. However, Google says they’re working on it.
Waze poised to join the list of pre-installed apps on Android phones
At MWC 2015, Waze announced they have been added to the list of apps that phone manufacturers and carriers can include as a pre-installed app on new Android devices. Waze says the list of apps are part of the Google Mobile Service. The move makes sense since Waze was purchased by Google last year and the people-provided traffic information can show up in the Google Maps platform on mobile devices. As part of their announcement, Waze shared that they are up to 50 million users.
Waze spokesperson Julie Mossler thinks the inclusion of Waze as a pre-installed app will grow the user base even more as users who may have been unfamiliar with it give it a try. Waze relies on human reports of road conditions and has been described as a “social traffic app.” Mossler thinks availability to Waze means
“a meaningful part of the population would immediately have access to blocked roads, dangerous intersections traffic and more in real time.”

All of the titles are relevant too with music from Daft Punk and Beyonce, to movie titles like The Dark Knight and the Departed. Head on over to the Play store and check out the deals for yourself.

iPhones could soon get support for Android Wear smartwatches
According to a French source, Google is planning to bring Android Wear to iPhone owners. This is unconfirmed at this point, but makes sense given Google’s willingness to improve Android Wear marketshare.
The smartwatch OS is currently an exclusive to Android smartphones, so it will certainly be a surprise if the company bakes in support for the competing iOS devices. This might perhaps be the only way to stop Apple device owners from getting the Apple Watch, which will release this Spring.
Even if Google does introduce support for iPhones, users won’t be able to install third party apps like on their Android devices, so functionality will be very limited. The fact that Google has merely said that they don’t have anything to share at this time sparks off speculation that the Mountain View giant is working on something.
What do you think?

Android Wear watches are reportedly getting iPhone support
If you carry an iPhone but would rather accessorize it with a Moto 360 than an Apple Watch, you might just get that choice without resorting to unofficial tricks. Sources for French outlet 01net claim that Google is “preparing to launch” an iOS version of its Android Wear app. There aren’t any other details, although it’s safe to say that third-party app support would require additional effort — it wouldn’t be an Android-to-Android connection any more, after all. This is very much a rumor and may not pan out, so don’t assume that you’ll be strapping on a Huawei Watch any time soon. With that said, Google isn’t strictly denying that something is afoot. The folks in Mountain View say they “don’t have anything to share at this time,” so hope springs eternal.

Google’s got a slam dunk with their latest Android commercial
Did you need a 15 second distraction to get you pumped up about Android today? Good, that is exactly what Google’s latest Android commercial is for, jam packed with cameras, it is a slam dunk, of sorts.
There is very little to say about the commercial itself, more Androidify characters grace the screen, sports are involved, and everyone is taking a photo with their Android device. It is fun.
Highlighting the wide range of camera sizes, styles and capabilities available across Android devices is subtly masked behind the action here. Camera technology has come a long way on Android, ranging from the single digit MP sensors often used for front facing, or ‘selfie’ cameras all the way up to the 20.7MP Sony sensor found on many last generation higher-end device and beyond.

Although we did not see or hear a whole bunch about the cameras and capabilities on the recently announced HTC One M9 or the Samsung Galaxy S6 flagship devices, Lenovo came to MWC with a treat. The Lenovo Vibe Shot is a well equipped mid-range device with a focus on photography. Packing a 16MP OIS camera and dedicated camera buttons, we see a great example of Google’s point, we can all use Android, but we don’t have to use the same equipment.
Surprised we could get so much out of this 15 second spot? Us too. Here, check out some of the older Android commercials and Androidify goodness before you go.
