Google Knowledge Graph helps amateur mixologists, adds cocktail info cards

When searching Google, through voice or otherwise, it’s handy to know that city capitals, basic math calculations, song lyrics and even diseases are among the things that Google’s Knowledge Graph helps you find details on quickly through the use of special information cards. The Knowledge Graph is already, well, quite knowledgable, but now it is learning one more trick: how to make your favorite cocktails.
The cards break down the cocktails into the main alcohol, followed by ingredients. Preparation steps, how it is served (on rocks, etc), the garnish used and the drinkware it is placed in. While not every drink I could think of came up with a card, generally all common drinks did. The latest addition to Knowledge Graph might not be handy for everyone, but it is still a welcome addition for those of us amateur mixologists looking for a few tips on how to serve up some booze more creativitely than just handing everyone shot glasses.
Google continues to rapidly expand the Knowledge Graph’s database with new info, and so we can’t only wonder what they’ll add next. What else would you like to see from the Knowledge Graph that isn’t offered already?
$415 million settlement approved in Silicon Valley employee poaching case

Silicon Valley workers have had their major class action lawsuit against Apple, Google and several other major technology companies tentatively approved by the federal judge dealing with the case. The lawsuit seeks a $415 million settlement for illegal no-poaching agreements designed to prevent rival companies from hiring each other’s employees.
The issue for employees here is that these no-poaching agreements allegedly prevented staff from negotiating better jobs or pay conditions at rival firms, effectively unfairly limiting industry wages. The case was fuelled by numerous emails and other communications exchanged between high-level managers and CEOs at top Silicon Valley companies, which point to widespread agreements not to poach staff from competing firms.
Judge Lucy Koh had previously rejected the first proposal for a settlement valued at $324 million, as it was deemed too low to cover the wages lost by employees affected by the agreement. Companies involved in the case have agreed to increase the amount they would pay out in compensation, which, if agreed to, will avoid an embarrassing trial for some of the US’ leading technology firms.
The parties involved have three months to submit final comments before the judge approves the settlement on June 9th.
Google drops update for Google Drive in Play Store [APK Download]
Google has started rolling out an update to the Google Drive Android app that brings drag and drop functionality for moving files around. Previously users had to rely on drop-down menus. Once the new app is installed, users should be greeted by a new pop-up screen that explains how it works.
Users can select one or multiple files to move. A little bubble will appear near the bottom of the screen showing how many files have been selected. While the bubble is visible, you can move around your Drive to other folders as the bubble is floating above the Drive app. When ready to move the files, you just drag this bubble into the folder where you want the files. You can also perform some other actions like starring the files or pinning them.
The update includes some slight tweaks to the navigation menu, making the header image more consistent with other Google apps in the way it presents account information. The update brings the new change to Incoming making it Shared with me that many have noted in the desktop browser when accessing Drive.
If you do not want to wait for the update to rollout to your account, you can download and install the APK using the link below.

Huawei rumored as the next Nexus maker
According to TechnoBuffalo, Kevin Yang, a director at the Chinese research firm iSuppli, Huawei will be the manufacturer of the next Nexus. Google made the decision after considering other local manufacturers and the growing market of Android devices in the country.
Understandably, while Huawei leads smartphone sales in China, it has little to no presence in the United States. The Economist tells that Huawei is the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world, having surpassed Ericsson of Sweden in 2012. In that year, the company was worth $32 billion with 140,000 employees and customers in 140 countries.
Nonetheless, Huawei has been suspected by western countries who worry that the networks it builds are used by Chinese government officials to spy on them. That fear led to Australia blocking its participation in the construction of a national broadband network. Additionally, a Congressional committee has delayed Huawei’s entry into the US because of suspicions caused by Chinese cyber-attacks.
Despite these suspicions, Huawei’s Ascend series has seen some critically acclaim, including its latest flagship, the Ascend Mate 7 phablet. While it is not available on contract with a carrier here in the US, it can be expected that it and other devices will be brought to the States unlocked, just like the $300, mid-range Ascend Mate 2. On March 1 at Mobile World Congress, it revealed the 7-inch MediaPad X2 tablet, the first 64-bit octa-core, LTE, dual-sim phablet. It also took the covers off its first smartwatch: the Huawei Watch, with 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, and a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor.
