Microsoft plugs OneDrive storage into your Chromecast

Chromecast

In case you needed another way to beam photos and videos to your Chromecast, the Android OneDrive app has you covered. The latest update for Microsoft’s cloud-storage service will take all those gorgeously arranged images from your device running Google’s mobile OS and put ’em on your TV via Mountain VIew’s HDMI wunderstick. Pretty handy, right? Your Galaxy S6 (or any other Android device with the app installed) should see the update shortly if it already hasn’t downloaded. As for iOS users, they’ll likely have to wait a bit longer — the last update only mentions bug fixes and stability improvements.

Yahoo’s redesigned mobile search looks a lot like Google’s

Yahoo has been pushing hard to be people’s default search engine on every device. Before it can make that happen, though, the company knows its product must be improved drastically. As part of these efforts, Yahoo Search is getting an overhaul on mobile, designed to put relevant results information front and center. For example, if you’re looking for sushi in Seattle, you now have the option to get directions to any restaurant, as well as read reviews and make reservations — so long as you’re in the US. It’s obvious that Yahoo took a cue from Google with these features, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

Google is making mobile search even easier with carousel results

Google-search-carouselGoogle announced yesterday that they are rolling out carousel search results for mobile searches (see image).  The new search results pull images from sites like Pinterest, Food Network, Houzz, etc. making it even easier for users to find what they are looking for.

In the past many large brands have been upset with Google for pulling snippet information with answers to users questions and putting them directly in the search results. Users no longer have to click a link to get the information they desire which is good for users, but bad for website owners since it results in less traffic to their site. Some brands have even accused Google of committing theft by doing this.

Since this new carousel search results in showing only images website owners should be fine with it as users will still have to click the link to find out more.

Google said on their Google+:

Whether you are looking for Pinterest pins, Vines, Houzz idea books or Food Network recipes, you can now browse through more content from your favorite websites within Google search results on your mobile device. Simply swipe through links within a carousel and tap any link to read or watch exactly what you are interested in.

Google offers a way to check your Project Fi invite status

If you signed up for Google’s Project Fi phone service, Mountain View now offers a way to check your invite status. TechCrunch reports the company alerted those who signed up via email about the new feature that displays an estimated wait time after you log-in on the Project Fi site. Its usefulness seems to vary, though, as some folks are seeing 3-4 weeks or 4-8 weeks while others are told to check back later for an estimate. Google said it would take until the middle of the summer to get all of the invites sorted, so those folks may see an update soon. Looking for a quick refresher on the service? We’ve got you covered right here.

Cloud Source Repositories by Google to compete against GitHub

google_cloud_source_repositories_beta

For most computer users, developers and all the work they do to write code for apps is invisible, so it should be no surprise that a new tool from Google designed for developers is flying under the radar. The tool is a new code repository call Cloud Source Repositories and is a move by Google to get into the source code repository hosting market where they will be competing against companies like GitHub, Atlassian, Microsoft and Amazon.

To help move along interest in the platform, Google built it so it can serve as a “remote” access point for other code repositories. This means developers can test the waters on the platform, which is currently in beta status, without abandoning an existing source code repository platform quite yet.

Google’s Chris Sells says the company is also planning to add other services to the platform, like Google Cloud Debugger. This will help make Google’s cloud services a stronger one-stop-shop option for developers. Google includes a Source Code Editor as part of the Cloud Source Repositories product. While in Beta, Google is offering 500 MB of space for free.

Google might be ready to release its smart contact lens sooner than expected

google_smart_contact_lens_052615Since last year, Google X research labs has been working on a smart contact lens that would analyze the wearer’s tears and measure glucose levels. This would allow diabetics to keep track of their glucose levels without having to prick their fingers to draw blood for analysis. Google is talking with the FDA about testing its smart lens and has mentioned that general availability to the consumer market would be in 5 years.  However, Google recently showed off potential packaging designs in a patent application, which seems to be a step taken at an early stage for a project that is supposedly still at a research phase. This might suggest that the project is further into being completed than we thought. In addition, According to a talk between Quartz and a Google representative, Google has been awarded a total of 44 patents involving contact lenses, and another 53 patents in which it applied for.

Hopefully, with the new smart lens, consumers will more likely be keen to wearing it and allow it to sell better than other wearable tech devices, such as Google Glass or Android Wear, which both have not been selling as expected.

Galaxy S6 takes first place in real world speed test, beating out LG’s G4 and the iPhone 6

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_LG_G4_Cameras_01_TAA new massive benchmark from Tom’s Guide has put six of the best performing smartphones on the market against each other to see which phone came out on top in a variety of situations. The tests measured everything from real-life performance and tasks you’d typically do on your smartphone every day, to gaming and other benchmarks. The test measured the Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4, HTC One M9, Google Nexus 6, Asus Zenfone 2, and Apple iPhone 6, so there’s a very wide variety of hardware here.

What’s definitely going to be great news for Samsung, their Galaxy S6 finished in 1st place a vast majority of the benchmarks, including PDF loading times, gaming performance, WiFi speed, and a handful of benchmarks. This can probably be attributed to Samsung’s own zippy Exynos processor, their very fast memory modules, and the insanely fast flash storage they opted to use in the S6. Surprisingly, though, the LG G4 beats out the S6 in camera opening time. Considering how much Samsung mentioned the quick camera shortcut on the home button, you’d think that would have scored better in a benchmark. But hey. props to LG for pulling that off.

The G4 scored 1st in camera opening time, as well as a Basemark OSII Memory test. Interestingly, the G4 pretty typically beat out the Snapdragon 810 powered HTC One M9. Considering the G4 has a higher resolution and only a Snapdragon 808 processor, this is almost irrefutable proof that the 810 has some problems. The only benchmark that the M9 came out ahead in was a 3dMark benchmark.

Another note worth mentioning is how poorly the Nexus 6 runs compared to other devices. It held up fairly well in benchmarks, but in real world tests, it was pretty consistently dead last, beaten by the Zenfone 2 and HTC’s M9. Considering Nexus phone are supposed to run very fast, completely stock versions of Android, that’s more than a little disappointing.

[APK Download] New version of Google Drive supports batch download, send, share interface improvements

google_drive_app_icon

Google appears to be ready to drop a new version of Google Drive for Android devices taking the app to version 2.2.233 that includes a few features that users will likely appreciate. In recent updates Google has added support for features like drag and drop support for files and Chromecast support. These latest enhancements may not garner headlines like those changes, but they will make the app a lot easier to use for many people. The new Google Drive app has revised the menu when multiple files are selected to make it easy to download or share them. The update also improves the process used to share a file with collaborators.

When selecting multiple files in Drive, users will find a floating menu opens near the bottom of the screen. Currently this menu gives users the ability to star, pin or trash files while the overflow allows the user to cancel the selection. The new version moves the star and trash options to the overflow menu along with the “move to…” option. In their place, users will find buttons to download the selected items or to “send” the selected which opens a screen for users to choose what app to use for sending the files.

Google also cleaned up the sharing options to make it a little easier to add people. Using the share button opens the Add People interface. Typing in a name and selecting them adds their name and icon from your contacts, similar to how the Gmail “To” line works. A drop down button to the right provides access to what editing rights are being granted. It should be noted that it appears whatever editing rights are granted will apply to all of the users being added – you do not set these on a per user basis like the desktop interface permits.

If you do not want to wait for the update to be officially released and roll out to your device, you can download the APK below.
