Nintendo leaks an 8-bit Mario Amiibo ahead of E3
It should come as no surprise, given Nintendo’s propensity for creating Mario games, that the company can’t stop making Amiibo based on its most-famous character. Since the NFC toy line was introduced last November, we’ve already seen five: Super Smash Bros. Mario, Mario Party Mario, Gold Mario, Silver Mario and Dr. Mario. Thanks to an email from Nintendo Spain (first spotted by Nintendo Inquirer), it appears there’s going to be a sixth: 8-bit Mario. The newsletter included an image of the retro-styled figurine along with a shot of an unannounced Animal Crossing collection that’ll feature at least four characters from the series.
Following the newsletter leak, a higher-quality image was found on Nintendo of Europe’s servers. It’s since been removed, but was of course saved and re-uploaded by an enterprising fan. We expect to hear more about the new Amiibo — and maybe some actual games — at Nintendo’s E3 live stream tomorrow evening.

StarVR is a QHD headset with an ultra-wide field of view
Starbreeze, the game developer behind Payday 2, Syndicate and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, is getting into VR. The company has acquired hardware startup InfinitEye and is developing its prototype VR headset under a new name: StarVR. The device is unique because it offers a super-wide 210-degree field of view, which is more than double the 100 degrees found on the Oculus Rift. The headset also boasts two 5.5-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) displays, coupled with a fresnel lens design to give players an immersive VR experience. Motion tracking is handled with fiducial markers on the headset (not shown) and a combination of gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers.
Starbreeze believes it can stand out with a hardware and software “integrated vision.” The first example of this is The Walking Dead, an upcoming game developed by its internal studio Overkill. The company is entering an already crowded space, but with a few exclusives there’s a slim chance it could compete with HTC, Sony and Valve.

‘Dishonored 2’ doesn’t hit this year, but a remake of first game does
We’ve barely begun E3 2015 and the worst kept secret of the show might go to Dishonored 2. Regardless, Bethesda and developer Arkane Studios made it internet official tonight at their media briefing and announced that there are two playable characters (including Corvo from the first game) and a few other bits. A release date wasn’t announced, but a fancied-up version of the first Dishonored hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this August. You now, so you can get caught up on the story so far. For a peek at Dishonored 2, check out the trailer below.

‘Fallout 4’ hits PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 10th
Fallout 4 is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 10th.
Bethesda revealed Fallout 4 earlier this month with a teaser site and a trailer full of brighter colors and a friendly dog companion. Plus: The robot butler of your dreams. The Fallout team has been working on 4 since the launch of Fallout 3 in 2009, Bethesda announced on-stage today. Fallout 4 includes the series’ most in-depth character-customization process and it showcases a dynamic dialogue system that lets you “walk away at any point.” Also new in Fallout 4, there’s a crafting system. Players can create their own settlements — build power stations to run turrets and other fancy, electrical fortress elements. Also, the weapon-modding system is robust, with 50 base weapons and more than 700 modifications, plus a separate UI for the power armor.

‘Fallout 4’ special edition comes with a Pip-Boy for your phone
I don’t know about you, but I’ve wanted a Pip-Boy of my own since I first played Fallout 3. With the Pip-Boy Edition of Fallout 4, I’ll finally be able to make that happen with a real-life wrist-bound stat-tracker and menu system. The wearable (I use that term lightly) comes with a companion app that’ll be available on Android and iOS, too. The mobile love doesn’t stop there either, because tonight Bethesda is releasing Fallout Shelter, an app that lets you design your own shelter in the game, tonight on iOS. Are your bathroom breaks ready?

Next ‘Doom’ hits Spring 2016 with mod support across all platforms
Prepare to shoot plenty of demons in the face this spring on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when Doom 4 hits. It’s predictably gorgeous and based on the gameplay demo onstage at the historic Dolby Theater, its environments look a bit more open than we’ve previously seen. Of course there’s a massive, powerful shotgun because what would Doom be without shotguns and chainsaws? And plenty of gore and crap-your-pants soundscape for that matter? It wouldn’t be Doom.
It’s more than single-player too. Arena combat takes place in Hell and the UAC facility on Mars. If those don’t work for you, there’s also the chance to design your own content with Snapmap across each platform. You can “create and edit game logic” to make new modes according to Bethesda, and to keep tabs on everything the publisher is launching Bethesda.net to manage everything from mods to game news. We hope to find out exactly what that entails when we see the game later this week (and when the beta launches), so keep your browser tuned to Engadget for more as the show progresses.

‘Super Smash Bros.’ gets ‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Fire Emblem’ brawlers
The roster for Super Smash Bros. just grew a little larger. Nintendo announced today that Street Fighter icon Ryu and Fire Emblem‘s Roy are joining the fight on Wii U and 3DS. They’re available for $3.99 on either system, or across both for $4.99 each — Ryu’s pack also comes with a Suzaku Castle stage, if you’re struggling to decide which to buy first.
Footage of both characters leaked on YouTube recently, so neither is a huge surprise. However, they’re arriving today alongside the previously announced Lucas from Mother 3 and a host of new Mii fighter outfits. These include Mega Man and Zero, Isabelle from Animal Crossing, an inkling boy, girl and “squid hat” outfit from Splatoon, Heihachi from Tekken, and Jacky and Akira from Virtua Fighter. All eight costumes are available for $6, or $9.20 across both the Wii U and 3DS versions. Alternatively, you can fork out $0.75 for individual costumes on your preferred system, or $1.15 if you want them on both.
That’s a ton of new playable characters — and a huge nod to classic fighting games — but Nintendo isn’t stopping there. In its pre-E3 presentation, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai also showed off a new Dreamland stage from Kirby, as well as two retro-styled levels taken from the original Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. The Kirby-inspired stage is coming out today and will set you back $1.99, or $2.99 across both systems. If you fancy all of the new content, Nintendo is offering a complete DLC pack (including Ryu, Roy and Lucas) for $21.96 on either 3DS or Wii U, or $29.16 across both game versions. If that sounds a little expensive, fear not. Nintendo is also rolling out a free Miiverse stage today which shows a selection of community-created Miiverse posts in the background.

In terms of gameplay, Nintendo is planning an August update that will introduce two new tourney modes: regular tourneys and community tourneys. In the future, the company will also patch in YouTube support so that you can easily upload and share your replays. Finally, Nintendo is promising that every playable Smash Bros. character will eventually have a corresponding Amiibo figure. The next wave will arrive in September with the Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter and Mii Gunner, alongside R.O.B, Duck Hunt and Mr. Game & Watch. Falco will debut this holiday season, followed by Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy and Ryu some time in the future. If you’re a Nintendo fan, E3 just got off to a pretty good start…

Tearaway Unfolded arrives adorably to PS4 on September 8th
Ready to guide a papercraft “You” through a world of hugs, malevolent squirrels and craft projects again? Yes, Tearaway Unfolded is coming at last to Sony’s PS4 console on September 8th. The game is a remake of the Tearaway on PS Vita, but reworked extensively with better graphics and support for the PS4’s DualShock 4 controllers. For instance, you can use the DualShock as a torch to attract (and then dispatch) enemy critters or catch objects “thrown” by on-screen characters. It’ll cost the same $39.99 as the popular Vita original, and early adopters will get a limited “Crafted” edition with custom decor, costumes and the Tearaway Unfolded soundtrack.
