Play ‘Star Wars Battlefront’ on PSVR December 6th
Electronic Arts teased out its Star Wars Battlefront VR experience way back in March, and now we know when it’s actually exiting hyperspace. Come December 6th, you’ll be able to strap on your PlayStation VR headset, jump into a virtual X-Wing cockpit and hopefully destroy the Death Star. Remember, this will be a free download for anyone who owns Battlefront.
And because today marks the game’s first birthday, EA has seen fit to drop a glut of details about the latest, and final, map pack, Rogue One: Scarif — also out on December 6th. As the name suggests, it brings in a quartet of maps from the upcoming movie, two new heroes (Jyn Erso and Orson Krennic) and a new “multi-stage game mode with space and ground combat.” Sounds just a bit like the Battle Station mode from the recent Death Star pack, if you ask me.
Speaking of which, starting today and running through the 20th, you can play the previously released Bespin, Death Star and Outer Rim packs for free, and earn four times the experience you usually would. That is, if you can pull yourself away from the free Overwatch weekend taking place starting tomorrow, too. Decisions, decisions.

Fantasy game ‘Mages of Mystralia’ is coming to PS4
After announcing Mages of Mystralia for PC earlier this week, Borealys Games also revealed that its intriguing wizard-em-up will also be making its way to PS4. This colorful indie title takes inspiration from Harry Potter and Zelda: Ocarina of Time, putting players in the shoes of wizard-in-training Zia as she attempts to get to grips with her new abilities.
Developed by a team who have collectively worked on the likes of Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, Borealys Games’ debut title looks to offer a charming adventure and a unique spell building mechanic. With Ed Greenwood, creator of the Dungeons & Dragons narrative Forgotten Realms, penning the story, Mages of Mystralia promises a compelling tale alongside its intriguing premise.
Mages of Mystralia will be coming to PC and PS4 in Spring 2017. With gameplay details still in short supply, expect to learn more on December 3rd and 4th, as Borealys Games will be taking it to PlayStation Experience in Anaheim for its first public showing.

The Morning After: Thursday, November 17, 2016
We put the 4K-ready Chromecast to the test, saw increasingly less snow around the US, and gawp at the first hybrid Mini — as well as a whole bunch of new cars coming out of the LA Auto Show. There’s also the discovery of a “Watch Dogs 2” character that has fully rendered sex organs for no apparent reason whatsoever. Not just another Thursday.
Better video quality comes at a costReview: Chromecast Ultra

Yes, the Chromecast Ultra does exactly what it promises to do: reliably stream 4K HDR video to compatible TVs. But the (marginal) increase in quality, alongside a lack of 4K content, means the device is hardly a must-buy.
Well, it wasn’t the players’ faultGamer discovers female characters with fully rendered private parts in “Watch Dogs 2,” gets banned
“Watch Dogs 2” tried to keep things as realistic as it could when it tried to offer a hackable gaming world, but it took next to no advanced hacker skillz for one player to discover that at least one of the female character models in the game has a fully rendered vagina. Why? Ubisoft hasn’t said, but revealing the hidden creepy detail was enough to get NeoGAF forum member Goron2000 banned from the Sony Entertainment Network (including PSN). Fortunately, his account was later reinstated.
May contain traces of “courage”The new MacBook Pro (and the Touch Bar) gets the teardown treatment

An iFixit teardown of the 13-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro reveals that there are even fewer replaceable parts than before. Its solid-state drive is embedded on the motherboard (even the non–Touch Bar model has a removable card), so whatever capacity you choose is what you’ll have for the life of the system. And that Touch Bar, as you might guess, isn’t exactly easy to replace.
All-wheel drive is split between gas and electric enginesThis is Mini’s first hybrid vehicle

Mini unveiled its hybrid all-wheel-drive Countryman S E at the LA Auto Show today. What’s intriguing is that, while it’s an AWD vehicle, the front wheels are powered by the gas engine while the rear ones are connected to an electric motor. The hybrid’s electric system is based on the platform used by parent company BMW’s all-electric eDrive system that powers the i3 and i8 vehicles. That pedigree will extend to an all-electric Mini that will launch in urban areas in 2019.
Studying is hard — even for artificial intelligenceJapanese AI fails to make the grade for Tokyo’s top university
A team of scientists from the National Institute of Informatics in Japan have given up on attempting to make their AI smart enough to get into the University of Tokyo. What exactly held it back? Team member Noriko Arai said AIs just aren’t “good at answering a type of question that requires the ability to grasp meaning in a broad spectrum.”
Google Earth is now available in VRThe entire planet, inside your VR headset
Google’s virtual Earth is now available in virtual reality. For the first time, users can walk through real city streets, fly through canyons and teleport to anywhere in the world. Earth VR covers the entire 196.9 million square miles of the planet, but for now you’ll need HTC’s Vive headset to explore. Google Earth VR will be coming to even more platforms (and presumably Google’s own Daydream VR) sometime next year.
But wait, there’s more…
- Tesla cars will get even quicker through a software update
- “White” Twitter bots can help curb racism
- US snow cover hits an all-time low for November
- Maven offers free birth control prescriptions via digital doctors
A real-world ‘Zelda’ escape room game is coming next year

‘FIFA’ hackers guilty of ‘mining’ $16 million from EA
We tend to think of ‘wire fraud’ as a white collar crime perpetrated against a banking institution, but in a world with virtual currencies and online marketplace, the reality can be a bit more complex. Take the case of Anthony Clark, a 24-year-old man from Whittier, CA, who was found guilty of a conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He didn’t defraud a major US bank — he and three others mined $16 million worth of FIFA Coins from EA Sports’ popular series of soccer games.
This isn’t the first time there have been legal charges surrounding the EA games’ digital currency — earlier this year some popular YouTube streamers got in trouble for violating the UK Gambling Act by creating online lotteries with FIFA Coins. Compared to this hacker group’s efforts, however, that was almost nothing: According to the Justice Department, Clark and his team created software that tricked EA’s servers into thinking their accounts had played thousands of FIFA Soccer matches in seconds, causing the game’s normally small FIFA Coin payouts to be multiplied exponentially. Over time, the group sold these ill-gotten winnings on secondary coin markets for millions.
The feds closed in on Clark and the rest last year, seizing money, cars and a house, before things ended this week when a jury convicted Clark on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The rest of the group pleaded guilty earlier, and all four are currently awaiting sentencing. Check out the Justice Department’s official statement for more details.

‘Uncharted,’ ‘Firewatch’ dominate The Game Awards nominations
The Game Awards show has made it a point to recognize more than just the usual blockbuster hits, and it looks like that will remain true when the 2016 ceremony takes place on December 1st. Geoff Keighley’s outfit has unveiled its nominees for this year, and there’s a healthy mix of triple-A titles and indies. It won’t shock you to hear that big names like Battlefield 1, Doom, Overwatch, Titanfall 2 and Uncharted 4 are up for multiple awards, of course. However, smaller projects like Inside (up for game of the year), Hyper Light Drifter and Firewatch make up a large chunk of the selections.
Both Firewatch and Uncharted are particularly notable given how thoroughly they dominate the acting, art and storytelling nominations, in some cases picking up multiple nods in the same category. It’s not completely surprising. Both games not only have distinctive visual languages, but go out of their way to create nuanced characters that have lives beyond their immediate adventures.
The 2016 picks are also noteworthy for the sheer range of categories. There are nominees for the best VR game, eSports player, eSports title, fan-made content and trending gamer (think YouTubers like Jacksepticeye or Danny O’Dwyer). The show this year is as much a reflection of gaming’s zeitgeist as it is pure talent — we’re just wondering whether or not there will be any shocking upsets among the winners.

‘Persona 5’ delays US release date to April 2017
The localized, English version of the highly anticipated JRPG Persona 5 just got an official release date. According to Atlus’s John Hardin, Persona 5 will land on PlayStation 4 and PS3 consoles in the US and the rest of the west on April 4th, 2017, with both the Japanese and English dubs available as a free DLC.
The dual audio support will arrive as a download “for logistical reasons,” Hardin said in his announcement, but Atlus has assured fans that it will be free in perpetuity on both the PS3 and PS4. “This was something we especially wanted to do for the Atlus Faithful,” Hardin wrote, “the ones who still appreciate our English dubs and respect all the effort we put into localizing.”
While that official release is still a solid four months off, American fans of the series can get a taste of the action with a playable Persona 5 demo at PlayStation Experience in Anaheim next month. Until then, you can watch other lucky players take it for a test run right this second on Atlus’s Twitch Channel.

Your Fitbit stats will earn you a boost in ‘NBA2K17’
The act of logging your steps with an activity tracker is good for meeting personal goals, but what if there was another use for hitting that target. Well, starting November 25th, tallying 10,000 steps with your Fitbit device will help improve your NBA2K17 gaming sessions. Next week, logging said number of steps in a day will earn you a temporary boost to your MyPlayer in the game to offer better on-court performance.
2K and Fitbit see the tie-in as a way to keep their users active in the real world by offering some virtual incentives for physical activity. When the feature goes live next week, Fitbit owners will need to connect their activity tracker with NBA2K17 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. After doing so, your step total will start counting towards the aforementioned in-game boost.
Once the 10,000 step goal is met, the game will alert you to apply at +5 boost to attributes and success rate to your MyPlayer for the next five games you play that day. We’re talking enhanced performance for things like agility, layups and dunks, and more. It may be a small incentive, but hey, it’s a little more than bragging rights among your friends.

‘EVE Online’ is now free-to-play
After over 13 years of paid subscriptions, EVE Online’s recently revealed free-to-play experiment is now live. In a bid to boost its dwindling player base, CCP’s latest expansion allows both new and existing players to explore the EVE universe for free.
This new pricing model is known as Clone States, and is the headline addition to the game’s latest expansion, EVE Online: Ascension. New players will automatically start off as “Alpha Clones,” with free access to all of EVE’s world, though they’ll be limited to to certain skills and spaceships. Pilots who want the complete EVE Online experience can opt to pay the $10 (£7) a month subscription, upgrading their player state to “Omega Clone,” unlocking the game’s full gamut of skills and spaceships.
One aspect of the expansion, called “Inception,” offers a “revised new player experience,” promising fully voiced mentor characters to ease players into the game, as well as a greater emphasis on story and large scale space battles. Thankfully for long-time players, the new pricing model and a few revisions to the existing gameplay aren’t all that this expansion brings. Ascension also provides players with new sandbox features, buildings, management tools, ships and more immersive ship customization, and let’s not forget the all important space explosions .
With EVE Online infamous for sparking wars that cost players hundreds of thousands of real-world dollars in damages, there’s never been a more wallet-friendly way to dip your toes into EVE’s all-consuming universe. After years of losing players, CCP will be hoping this new way to play does enough to change EVE Online’s fortunes — with the alternative being an Evolve-like fall from grace.
