New in our buyer’s guide: the Galaxy Note 5, OnePlus 2 and Moto G

Phones and gaming. Gaming and phones. That’s about all we’re adding to our buyer’s guide this month. Since we last checked in, we’ve inducted a trio of new handsets, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Moto G and the OnePlus 2. (And yes, we’ll soon have to update the iPhone part of the guide too.) Meanwhile, we also decided that the Wii U and the New 3DS XL deserved spots in our gaming guide, along with a nod to toys-to-life products like Amiibo, Skylanders and Disney’s Infinity series. We’ll be back next month, but until then, feel free to poke around our complete guide to see our top picks.

Playdate: We’re going the distance in ‘Forza Motorsport 6’

We’re going for speed. We’re (not) all alone in a time of need. All ’90s song references aside, today we’re going to race through two hours of the latest entry in Microsoft’s racing simulation, Forza Motorsport 6. What’s that mean for you? Well, you’ll be able to watch me careen around race tracks, cause massive amounts of vehicular carnage and generally turn my Drivatar into everyone’s worst nightmare. If that sounds like your type of party, come back here at 6 pm ET / 3 pm PT to witness the glory (Tim’s feeble racing skills) and the hilarity (Sean Buckley’s amazement at said driving skills).

In the meantime, if you’ve already picked your copy of the game up, I’ve designed a few simple Engadget liveries and logos in the paintshop that you can download (or even an Audi Formula E car, a Tesla Model S and a bitchin’ Ford Focus), and you can totally emblazon your ride with your favorite tech site’s colors. Of course, you can always check out Playdate at Twitch.tv/joystiq or the Engadget Gaming homepage as well. Maybe — just maybe — Tim will talk about drinking antifreeze again.

‘Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen’ heads to PC in January

Surprise! Capcom’s widely beloved action-fantasy RPG, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, is due to hit PC in January for $30. The original Dragon’s Dogma launched on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2012, and the massive Dark Arisen expansion came to Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013. Capcom announced the new PC version today, noting it will support Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads on top of keyboard-and-mouse controls, plus feature “stunningly high-res graphics and improved fidelity.”

The PC version of Dark Arisen will include full support on Steam, Capcom says. When the expansion debuted in 2013, we called it a “sprawling hunk of supplemental content” and predicted it would “inevitably be billed as the definitive Dragon’s Dogma experience.” Earlier this year, Capcom unveiled Dragon’s Dogma Online, a free party-based RPG that’s out now in Japan across PS4, PS3 and PC.

Capcom is on a roll recently with re-releases: It’s currently (and finally) working on a remake of Resident Evil 2.

Ubisoft is building a tiny indoor theme park in Malaysia

FRANCE-FUTUROSCOPE-PARK-FEATURE

If you were excited about Nintendo’s deal to put its characters in Universal theme parks, chew on this: the publisher behind games like Assassin’s Creed, Just Dance and the Raving Rabbids games is building it’s own amusement park. No kidding — Ubisoft has partnered with RSG, a Malaysian park developer, to create a 100,000+ square foot indoor facility in Kuala Lumpur featuring Ubisoft-themed rides, attractions and shows.

Believe it or not, this isn’t as unprecedented as you might think. Last year Ubisoft partnered with a France’s Parc du Futuroscope to create a Raving Rabbids ride, and Sega built a similar indoor theme park in Dubai. Don’t expect a Disneyland for video games, though — the proposed park’s footprint is small enough to fit inside a Walmart, Target or Home Depot store. Can a theme park survive on the power of third-party video game franchises alone? We’ll find out in 2020.

UK tour of ‘Silent Hill Live’ will put the concert in disconcerting

Nothing sets the tone of a horror game like a truly haunting score, and few can create as claustrophobic and creepy an atmosphere as Akira Yamaoka. The composer has been partly responsible for making the majority of the Silent Hill franchise practically unplayable for anyone lacking nerves of reinforced steel. “Silent Hill Live” invites fans of the horror series to revisit the eerie scores of games past — this time in a more comfortable setting where monstrosities (hopefully) aren’t lurking around every corner.

Yamaoka and a live band are set to creep out a handful of venues across the UK, scheduled fittingly around Halloween. Silent Hill Live debuts in Bristol on October 29th, then heads to Cardiff, London and Southampton before finishing up in Manchester on November 3rd. If you’re interested, tickets will go on sale this Friday, and unlike the playable teaser for the now-cancelled Silent Hills, you’ll probably be able to sleep after enjoying some of Yamaoka’s most memorable work.

‘Minecraft’ players on Windows 10 and mobile can now build together

Minecraft offers wondrous worlds for solo adventurers, but it also gives groups the perfect canvas to build on and break together. With this in mind, developer Mojang is making it easier to host your friends with cross-platform play between Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition and Minecraft: Pocket Edition. Up to five players can now join the same session on a local network with their PC, iOS, Android or Windows Phone devices. And, if you need another reason to try Microsoft’s new OS, the Windows 10 version has also been updated with five-person online multiplayer over Xbox Live. Microsoft has put a ton of work into its new Xbox app for Windows 10 — it’s desperate to prove the OS is a worthy upgrade for PC gamers — and this could make it easier for beginners to set up collaborative builds.

If your little one is glued to their phone or tablet, however, Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been spruced up a little too. The touch controls have been revamped and Mojang is adding controller support with a dedicated button mapping screen. Better yet, there’s now enhanced weather effects, including directional rain, the ability to sneak and sprint, and access to the spooky “Nether” dimension. It’s easy to forget just how popular Minecraft has become; as Mojang’s Minecon convention showed this year, the community has, in fact, never been stronger, making each iterative update just as important as the last.

‘FIFA 16’ demo lets you control a women’s team for the first time

FIFA 16 is a little special this year. For the first time ever, EA will let you play its football game as one of 12 women’s national teams. It’s a landmark moment in the series, and today you can see how it all works with the long-anticipated demo on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. You can step out onto the turf as one of two women’s teams — the USA or Germany — or get to grips with one of 10 professional clubs: Barcelona, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Inter Milan, Manchester City, PSG, Real Madrid, Club Atlético River Plate and the Seattle Sounders. With whipped crosses, mid-air tackles and some new finishing animations, there’s a lot here to sink your Suarez teeth into.

‘Pikmin 4’ is not only real, but nearly finished

2013 E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo - Day 3

You may have had to wait the better part of a decade to get a third Pikmin game, but its follow-up won’t take nearly so long. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed to Eurogamer that his company is not only working on Pikmin 4, but that it’s “very close to completion.” Surprise! Mind you, that’s about all that Miyamoto is willing to divulge at this point. He’s not talking about release dates, game mechanics (hint: it probably involves marshaling Pikmin) or even the choice of platform. Will this be one of the first games for the upcoming NX system, a swan song for the Wii U, or something else? Whatever the answer, you’ll have to sit tight and hope that Nintendo does justice to its cult favorite game franchise.

The year of change for ‘Destiny’ starts next week

Developer Bungie is treating Destiny a lot like an MMO and come next Tuesday the game shifts into version 2.0, what the studio is effectively referring to as “year two” for the game. There are a ton of changes coming, and even if you don’t snag the kick-off expansion pack “The Taken King,” you’ll be able to benefit from them. Bungie’s latest blog post gets into the nitty-gritty, but we’re going to keep it mostly high-level here. First up: new modes and new maps for the game’s adversarial multiplayer mode, Crucible, are out now but unless you buy the next expansion, will disappear once “King” launches in earnest next week. A new subclass for your character is available as well. Everyone, not just “House of Wolves” and “Dark Below” purchasers, will get the benefit of an increased level cap (bumping up to 34), but again, buying “King” will increase it further (to 40).

And in an effort to make hitting that ceiling less arduous, Destiny‘s arcane end-game leveling system doesn’t rely on armor stats anymore. Instead, simply doing quests and earning experience points will let everyone max their Guardian’s abilities from here on out. The way bounties, weapon upgrades and a few other things have been streamlined, too. Like I said, there are scads of other improvements coming next week and even as detailed as Bungie’s latest blog post is, the developer says that more details will hit next week when it releases the full patch notes for Destiny 2.0. Maybe use this long holiday weekend to scrape some of the rust off of your trigger fingers — from the sounds of it, you’ll need to come Tuesday.

A time capsule of ridiculous video game box art

Nostalgia is a weird, powerful thing. It’s the force of nature that resurrected Captain EO at Walt Disney World and turned a children’s cartoon about living robot cars into a blockbuster movie franchise. For me, it’s also the reason I collect video game packaging from the 1980s and ’90s. It feels silly, coveting a glorified advertisement designed to sell Nintendo games, but I can’t help myself: A lot of these boxes are minor works of art. Don’t believe me? Check it out: a full gallery of NES-era game boxes with deliciously over-the top plot descriptions, fantastic pulp artwork and even the occasional free-pizza coupon. Have a favorite retro game box of your own? Tell me all about it in the comments section below.Slideshow-316536
