Add the original PlayStation boot screen to your PS4 gaming videos
Nothing promises gaming excitement like the dramatic eight-second boot up of the original Sony Playstation (below). You can now add it to your game play videos, thanks to Sony’s free 20th anniversary theme pack for SHAREfactory, the video editing tool for the Playstation 4. It comes with four intros (including the original boot screen), four outros, 11 titles clips, eight transitions, 26 stickers and four backgrounds. Sony notes that this can only be used in SHAREfactory, not as a PS4 home screen theme. Luckily, it already has a Playstation One theme pack if that’s what you’re after.

Alienware will give recent laptop buyers a free upgrade
It’s tough to buy a laptop when new processors are imminent — you can’t help but feel that the system you just bought will be rendered obsolete weeks later. That might not be a problem if you snagged one of Alienware’s latest laptops, though. The Dell-owned PC maker is promising free upgrades if you bought one of its updated portables (those introduced on August 27th) and new processors reach the relevant Alienware line within 30 days. In other words, you’re not hosed if a Skylake-based system shows up while you’re still getting used to your days-old machine. The company tells us it has “high confidence” that Skylake will show up by late September, so you’ll be future-proofed as long as there isn’t a delay.

‘Pokémon Go’ uses your phone for real-life Mewtwo hunting
We’ve seen Pokémon in VR before, but how about getting them about and playing with them in the real world? That’s what Pokémon Go wants to achieve. It’s a collaboration between Niantic Labs (the folks behind the GPS-based Ingress) and the Pokémon Company. From what we can tell, it’s going to use Niantic’s location-based backend to have you catching and fighting the pocket monsters in the streets all around you. Of course, there’s a wearable involved dubbed the Pokemon Go Plus. It’s a Bluetooth device from Nintendo that’s shaped like one of the series’ Pokeballs (capture-gizmos that store monsters after defeating them) that pairs with both Android and iOS to flash and vibrate, giving you alerts when something is happening in the game in your vicinity. It goes a bit further than that though, and you can even use the Go Plus to capture a monster with it.
When it launches next year, Go will be free-to-play and involves you catching, trading and battling the beasties, and will apparently have you scouring the real world for hidden ones near you. “Our challenge was to develop a great game for smartphone devices that expressed the core values of Pokémon,” the Pokémon Company’s president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara says in a prepared statement. This isn’t the first time the adorable little creatures have appeared on mobile devices, and it’s further steps of Nintendo tip-toeing into the space. There’s no way that playing the game is going to be anything like what the involved parties are selling in the video below though, but you can always dream, right?

$30 ‘Fallout 4’ season pass guarantees all add-on packs
A real-life Pip-Boy might be painfully out of reach, but Fallout 4 developer Bethesda has something else that might make up for it: a season pass for add-on content that actually sounds like a hellacious deal. Bethesda admits that it doesn’t even know what future packs will look like, but says that they’ll start hitting early next year. Thirty bucks for “all of the DLC we [Bethesda] ever do” sounds like a great idea, though. Almost every piece of post-launch content for Fallout 3 fundamentally changed how the game played in pretty significant ways, be it turning the role-playing game into an objective-based affair with “Operation: Anchorage,” a survival horror romp in “Point Lookout” or “Mothership Zeta’s” corridor-shooter sensibilities, so there’s precedent for some neat stuff coming down the pike.
However, there’s the chance that this content could miss the mark pretty hard as it was difficult for Bethesda to replicate those prior successes with the downloadable content packs for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. And of course, this is the same company that’s responsible for charging folks for horse armor in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion — so perhaps temper your excitement just a bit.

Apple TV supports ‘Guitar Hero Live,’ ‘Disney Infinity’ via Bluetooth
Guitar Hero Live, Skylanders SuperChargers and Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions are on their way to Apple TV, iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch in the fall. Additionally, Disney Infinity 3.0 is heading to Apple TV by then end of the year. But that’s the old news.
Here’s the new, technical bit: Apple TV supports MFi-based gamepads, rather than non-certified Bluetooth options, as outlined in its description. MFi is a licensing program for devices that connect to Apple products and you can read more about it right here. Basically though, Star Wars fans and wannabe rockstars can rest easy. The newly designed, Bluetooth Guitar Hero Live instruments will work across all Apple devices, including Apple TV. Disney Infinity 3.0 will get a wireless Bluetooth base just for Apple TV (note that the console version of that base is wired, sometimes leading to terrible accidents). Skylanders SuperChargers uses Bluetooth devices and these will work with Apple TV as well, according to Activision.
“If you already own a Bluetooth portal and controller from the iPad version of Skylanders Trap Team, you can use the same devices for Skylanders SuperChargers,” Activision says. “All you need to do is download the game and you are good to go.” Additionally, the SuperChargers Starter Pack for Apple devices includes a Bluetooth-enabled portal and an embedded Bluetooth controller.
Apple TV supports the new Siri Remote — which includes a touchpad, gyroscope and accelerometer — plus the iPod Touch or iPhone as controllers, in addition to third-party MFi-based gamepads.
With Apple TV, players will be able to begin playing games in the living room and then continue playing on iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch (if someone tries to take over the TV or something). Crossy Road, Transistor, Rayman Adventures, Disney Infinity 3.0, Shadowmatic, Beat Sports, Manticore Rising and Guitar Hero Live are confirmed for Apple TV so far. Crossy Road took center stage during Apple’s event for a while and showed off its new multiplayer mode, which will launch alongside Apple TV in October.

The new Apple TV brings apps, Siri and a touchscreen remote for $149
The new Apple TV is here, just unveiled at today’s big event. Speculation about Apple’s plans for the living room have circled for years, and this represents its most powerful assault on the space so far. A hardware refresh in 2012 added 1080p support but not much else, so we’re more than due for an upgrade, and exec Eddy Cue appropriately called today “a big day for the big screen.” Tim Cook called it “the future of television,” promising a new tvOS, App Store and showing off features including deep Siri integration with a new remote.
That remote has a touchscreen, mic and Wii-like motion controls built in, necessary for Siri to search across “multiple content options” (Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, with more to come) on a single screen. Universal search is a feature already offered by competitors like Roku, Samsung, Amazon and Xbox that makes it easy to find a show or movie without having to know which service or app it’s in first, and now it’s on Apple TV too. There will be two versions of the new Apple TV: a 32GB model for $149, and 64GB model for $199, shipping in October to over 80 countries.Slideshow-318411
Get all the news from today’s iPhone event right here.

In the onstage demo, Apple showed off features using Siri to locate content by genre, actor or just asking “what’s good for kids?” It also has a feature where asking “Siri, what did he/she say?” automatically skips back a few seconds and turns on the captions. Taking a page from Siri on iOS (as well as other helper like Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana) Siri can pull up info on the TV screen like general facts and current sports scores. Everything during the demo looked to be voice controlled, including switching apps.

The remote is connected to the box by Bluetooth 4.0, with volume control for your TV, as well as an accelerometer and gyroscope for the motion control features. Apple says it can go three months without charging, but when you need to top it up, it connects to the same Lightning plug as current iPhones and iPads. There’s support for third-party controllers via Bluetooth too, key for the gaming experiences Apple is expecting.
As for the box itself, it looks a little taller than the previous squared-off hockey puck. Inside is a 64-bit A8 chip, with connections via an IR sensor, Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac WiFi. There’s no mention of external storage support, or any resolutions beyond 1080p, so we’re figuring those aren’t in the cards this time around.

Oh, and about those apps. Once again, the rumors are on target, with Apple unveiling its new iOS-based tvOS. Apple says everything from Netflix to games like Star Wars and Guitar Hero are coming to Apple TV now. Following Siri, the next software demo featured Crossy Road, which is coming at the launch of Apple TV with a new multiplayer mode, that could add players using iPhones as controllers. Harmonix is showing off a Beat Sports game that uses the remote’s motion controls to add Nintendo Wii-style features.
The next demonstration featured the shopping app Gilt, where of course buyers can swipe through different looks and buy them directly from the remote. Slightly more impressive is a new MLB.com At-Bat app that not only pulls in games in 60fps, but also features split-screen to watch multiple games, and notifications about events as they’re happening that can pull you into a live broadcast.

Both versions of the new Apple TV launch next month alongside the current $69 Apple TV third-gen, but developers can access the tvOS beta and start working on apps today.

The new ‘Guitar Hero,’ ‘Crossy Road’ multiplayer heads to Apple TV
The latest version of Apple TV offers a bunch of new apps and Siri functionalities — and it also has games. Today during its 2015 iPhone event, Apple showed off some new gaming experiences, including Rayman Adventures, Disney Infinity 3.0, Shadowmatic, Crossy Road and the new Guitar Hero. Hipster Whale, the developer behind Crossy Road, took the stage to show how the game works in the living room, using the Apple TV remote’s new touchscreen function to control the crossing character. Crossy Road is also getting a multiplayer mode on Apple TV, where players can join in with an iPhone or iPod Touch as a controller.
The Apple TV remote has both touchscreen and motion-sensing capabilities. Harmonix, the studio behind Rock Band, jumped on-stage to show off Beat Sports, a new rhythm-based game exclusive to Apple TV. With the latest version of Apple TV, players can start any game on the iPad, for example, and continue playing it on the big screen.
These games and experiences will be available on Apple TV when it launches in October.

Space-sim ‘Elite: Dangerous’ comes to Xbox One on October 6th
We’re still not sure when No Man’s Sky is coming to PS4, but in the meantime Xbox One fans have their own slice of space exploration nirvana to look forward to. Elite: Dangerous has been out on PC for some time, and since June it’s also been available to Xbox players as part of the Xbox Game Preview program. Now, creator Frontier Developments has confirmed that the full console version will be launching on October 6th. The game is incredibly immersive, with an enormous galaxy and beautifully designed ships to pilot. The vast, empty nature of space comes with its drawbacks, however — if you’re expecting an endless stream of dogfights and nail-biting supply runs, you might be disappointed. The first in a series of “Horizons” expansions is due on PC this holiday, adding planetary landings, but it’s unclear exactly when it’ll make the lightspeed jump to Xbox One.

Android Lollipop is the OS of choice for one in five users
If you own an Android device, find four similarly outfitted friends and line up, shoulder-to-shoulder. Look to your left. Look to your right. Chances are, one of you has Lollipop, the latest Android mobile operating system. Twenty-one percent of Android devices use Lollipop, according to the company’s own breakdown. This figure is up significantly from May, when Android reported just nine percent of its devices used the new OS. The largest share of the Android OS pie goes to Kit Kat, with 39 percent, followed by Jelly Bean with 32 percent.
Android’s next update is called “Marshmallow” and while it doesn’t yet have a release date, it should hit devices soon. Marshmallow’s focus is “polish and quality,” according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. We checked out the M Preview version in June and found that “when M works well, it works really well.”
A few notes regarding today’s numbers: The Nexus 9, Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge all come with Lollipop right out of the box. Also, Android’s figures reflect “devices running the latest Google Play Store app, which is compatible with Android 2.2 and higher.” That means older devices, or those without Google Play, aren’t counted in this particular survey.
