Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 could be getting Android 5.1.1 soon

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Main_02_TA

Samsung is notoriously slow in bringing firmware upgrades to even its latest devices. However, you’re in luck if you own a Galaxy Note 4, as it seems the update is going through its testing stages, according to results on AnTuTu Benchmark.

SamMobile has been told that this one of the first releases of the update, so its more than likely ridden with quirks and bugs. However, the update is in the works, and it could only be a couple of months before it comes to fruition. Then again, if Samsung’s past update releases are anything to go by, we could see Android 5.1 for the Note 4 around the time Android M is ready to launch on Nexus devices. Not mention the fact that Note 4 users on a carrier-branded device will have to wait even longer for 5.1.

There’s also been rumors that Samsung is testing a 64-bit build for the Galaxy Note 4, which would provide a lot of benefits for users on the hardware side of the spectrum. But, it likely won’t make it to launch, since only the Exynos model has the 64-bit chip, and even the 64-bit support in that is said to be disabled. Then again, if Samsung is testing a build for it, it’s highly probable that it could get enabled again.

These are all rumors being tossed around, of course. But, knowing that Android 5.1 is at least in the works for the Note 4 is at least a glimmer of hope for seeing Android M on the device sometime next year.

Large smartphones rule the roost in latest consumer satisfaction survey

201506_acsi_smartphone_satisfaction_scores

When Samsung first came out with a large smartphone, the Galaxy Note, it was derided by many as being too big and spawned the term “phablet” as consumers tried to describe a device that seemed to land in between a phone and a tablet. A few years later though we see several companies producing smartphones in this category and even Apple is selling one, the iPhone 6 Plus, now. In a recent survey of 20 smartphones, consumers ranked these large smartphones high with the top three firmly coming from the “phablet” camp.

Leading the way in consumer satisfaction was the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with a score of 86 out of 100 on the American Consumer Satisfaction Index survey of 70,000 participants. Half of the devices tied for second place with a score of 82 were large smartphones with both the Galaxy Note 3 and the iPhone 6 Plus reaching this position. Close behind in seventh place was the LG G3 with a score of 80. Overall, consumers were quite happy with their smartphones as the industry achieved some of its highest scores ever.

One factor that may have helped these larger smartphones find their way to the top of the rankings is their bigger batteries. Since the devices are larger, manufacturers can pack in heftier batteries that can last quite a bit longer than typical smartphone batteries. Poor battery life is a weak point for the industry according to the participants surveyed, so being able to outlast others helped keep consumers happy.

Samsung to Further Confuse Shoppers, Will Launch Galaxy S6 Plus

Everything is better with a Plus. Don’t believe me? Hop in an Audi A8’s rear seat and then try an A8 L. Right? You know you love it. Also, clothes are more fun when larger. I defy you to prove that tight hipstery nonsense is somehow better for my circulation and/or general contentment.

But I digress.

Hot off the heels of a maybe-successfulmaybe-not launch of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Samsung is now allegedly slated to release the S6 Plus, which we are required to tell you is not the Note 5.

The S6 Plus, model SM-G928 – code named Project Zero 2 –  will reportedly sport a 5.4- or 5.5-inch Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display, like the S6 Edge, as well as 32GB of internal storage, a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, as well as 5 MP front camera and a 16 MP rear shooter.

For Note aficionados, the next iteration of what is arguably Samsung’s most consistently great phone will have a 2K or 4K non-curved screen, an octa-core Exynos 7422 processor, and the beloved S Pen.

So we’re looking at a difference of .2-.3 inches in screen size between the two models, which isn’t much. We’d normally assume the S6 Plus won’t have as high resolution a screen as the Note in keeping with the Note’s premium tier in the Samsung lineup, but the S6 Edge already has a Quad HD (2560 x 1440) screen, so there’s not much wiggle space between DPI.

One has to wonder whether iPhone 6 Plus sales have dinged Note 4 sales enough to cause Samsung to release what amounts to a larger, slightly juiced up S6 Edge without the extra bells and whistles of a Note.

Also, of course, we’re likely a few months out from the Note 5, so a nice and easy Plus release could satiate hungry Samsung devotees who just want more real estate.

To recap, we’re potentially looking at three phones of the following screen sizes: 5.1-inch, 5.5-inch, and 5.7-inch. Makes you miss the good ol’ days of 4-inch screens, right?

Samsung is rumoured to be updating the Galaxy Note 4 to Android 5.1.1 by end of July

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Back_Galaxy_Note_4_Logo_TA

While some Galaxy Note 4 owners are yet to see Android 5.0.1 on their devices, having to make do with KitKat 4.4, others have been using Lollipop on their devices for a while already. And now it seems that the Samsung is allegedly busy sorting the ingredients out for the next batch of firmware updates for the handset.

According to SamMobile, Samsung is busy prepping Android 5.1.1 for the Galaxy Note 4, with the aim of rolling it out to handsets by the end of July. Hopefully all Galaxy Note 4 owners, regardless of the carrier or variant, will be able to enjoy the Android 5.1.1 update. Samsung’s work is never done though because we all know what the question will be after the Android 5.1.1 update is (eventually) rolled out. That’s right, when is Android M coming?

Galaxy Note 4 now receiving Lollipop in Croatia

Android_Lollipop_Statue_Screenshot_From_Unwrapping_Video_01

Samsung is currently in the process of rolling out the Android 5.0.1 update to all its unlocked variants of the Galaxy Note 4 in Croatia. This upgrade brings the latest build of Lollipop, together with a ton of bug fixes and stability improvements to the handset.

Hit the break for the full changelog.

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the mosttimely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

As is customary with all manufacturer updates, the upgrade is being rolled out in stages, but if you don’t feel like waiting for a notification confirming that it’s ready for your device, you can search for the update manually. To do so simply follow the four steps below:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap on “About Device”
  3. Hit “System Updates”
