RIM unveils BlackBerry Bold 9790, Curve 9380, hitting the market within weeks

Now that we’ve seen all the leaks and heard all the rumors, RIM has finally announced the BlackBerry Bold 9790 and Curve 9380, welcoming two new members to the OS 7 family. Picking up where the Bold 9780 left off, the comparatively higher-end 9790 boasts a 2.44-inch touchscreen display with 360 x 480 resolution, and is powered by a 1GHz CPU. The QWERTY-equipped handset also ships with 8GB of onboard memory and features a microSD slot that offers up to 32GB of additional space. The Curve 9380, meanwhile, is an all touchscreen affair, with a 3.2-inch, 480 x 360 display and a five megapixel camera. RIM hasn’t offered any other details on the 9380’s specs, though the company did specify that both devices will offer NFC and augmented reality support, and will come pre-loaded with BlackBerry Messenger, Documents To Go Premium, and BlackBerry Protect. No word yet on pricing or availability, though RIM says to expect a launch “over the coming weeks.” Find more details in the full PR, after the break.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 vs BlackBerry Bold 9780

RIM has unveiled five new Blackberry 7 handsets – the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930, the BlackBerry Torch 9810, 9850 and 9860. All models will pack a QWERTY keyboard, touchscreen controls and the long-rumoured NFC connectivity.First confirmed at the companys BlackBerry World in Florida, the BlackBerry 9900 is the makers slimmest smartphone to date and throws a touchscreen into the mix, giving it a definite advantage over the brands existing flagship model, the BlackBerry Bold 9780. But how do the two phones compare in other areas and will it be worth an upgrade when the new handset hits the shelves. We took a closer look at the specs to see whats what.

RIM launches three new handsets, Torch 9810, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900

Here they are folks. Months after we first got our hands on pre-release Torch and Bold Touch handsets, RIM is finally ready to show off its latest hardware. They’re all powered by a 1.2GHz processor, have 768MB of onboard RAM and — most importantly — run the latest operating system BB OS7.

RIM claims its new OS is 40 percent faster at browsing compared to OS6-based smartphones, and 100 percent faster than OS5 handsets. It also supports RIM’s Liquid Graphics technology, which uses a dedicated graphics processor for smoother scrolling, zooming and panning.

Hands-on impressions follow after the break, and stay tuned because we’re updating this with more info from the London launch event as we get it, with full galleries and a hands-on video following imminently.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 in pink

Phones 4u recently announced an exclusive pink BlackBerry Curve 8520. We braved blizzards and black ice to get our hands on one to bring you all the details.

Well we say details, but the Curve 8520 has been around for a while. We reviewed it in full back in August 2009, and you can read that review here if you want to know exactly we thought about it at the time.

It isn’t the most advanced BlackBerry around, but it is affordable: Phones 4u are selling this pink number for £129.95 on pay as you go, or free on certain monthly tariffs; we glanced over those listed and we reckon you could probably haggle on some of them for a better deal… Read more »

BlackBerry Torch coming to AT&T in two fresh colors next month

Allow us to clarify, the colors are “fresh” as in “new,” not as in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Don’t get us wrong, though: white almost always looks fresh (in the Fresh Prince sense) on a phone, and the Torch seems to be no exception — partly thanks to the matching white keyboard. As expected, it’ll be coming in red and white and will be available on November 7 (a day before the HTC Surround and Samsung Focus, interestingly) at the same time as a sweet new promotion that’ll allow folks to buy any two accessories from AT&T and get a third one of equal or lesser value for free. Don’t violate any fire codes stuffing yourselves into your local stores, alright? Follow the break for the press release.

RIM expands range with BlackBerry Bold 9780

Research in Motion (RIM) has introduced another model into its Bold range of smartphones: the BlackBerry Bold 9780.

Being the second BlackBerry smartphone to sport BlackBerry 6 OS (after the BlackBerry Torch), complete with new WebKit browser, the 9780 also houses a 5-megapixel camera and 512MB of in-built flash memory. Plus, there’s a memory card slot that can cope with up to 32GB of external storage.

Built like a traditional BlackBerry device (in preference over the Torch, for instance), the handset also features an easy to use keyboard and optical trackpad. It will be available from multiple carriers around the world as of November.

But it’s the debut of BlackBerry 6 on a new handset that is the major talking point: “We are very excited to introduce the BlackBerry Bold 9780 featuring the new BlackBerry 6 operating system,” says Carlo Chiarello, vice president, Product Management at Research In Motion.

“[It] delivers a wide range of enhancements including a rich new user interface, a fast and powerful WebKit-based browser, broadly improved communications and multimedia capabilities, [and] an incredibly useful Universal Search feature”.

We’ve given BlackBerry 6 a going over when we saw the BlackBerry Torch and we’ll be sure to bring you all the details of how it works on a traditional QWERTY BlackBerry handset.

BlackBerry Playbook tablet OS

Earlier today, RIM opened up its BlackBerry PlayBook devkit to all developers who may be interested in creating apps for the forthcoming tablet. The company also allowed anybody to download a beta ISO of its OS simulator, mainly to allow programmers to test their applications as they go.

However, Pocket-lint has gone through the (fairly) lengthy process to install the new OS on a PC, and this is what we’ve found… Read more »
