MTV app arrives on Android, brings full TV episodes along — if you have cable
Android users don’t have to look blankly at their iPad- and Xbox-using friends whenever they talk about Catfish anymore, now that the MTV app has arrived on Google Play. It offers on-demand streaming of recent episodes from select series, but only for subscribers of participating cable providers. The list of cable companies is quite lengthy (it includes AT&T U-Verse, Time Warner and Verizon FiOS, among others) but it’s missing some notable ones like DISH, at least for now. Unlucky folks who can’t access full episodes can always watch trailers and look at companion content for MTV Shows, including polls and behind-the-scene tidbits. Or, you know, they can look for their video fix elsewhere instead — some of those other sources even come with actual music videos.

Facebook for Windows Phone 8 now lets you pin chats and events to the home screen
Windows Phone-toting Facebook users no longer have to worry about missing an important conversation or party update. A revamped Facebook app for Windows Phone 8 lets socialites pin seemingly any Facebook content to the home screen as a Live Tile, including chats, events, groups, pages and photo albums. The app’s redesigned main Live Tile also shows wall updates, and Microsoft has spent time bolstering both the language support and overall performance. Whether or not you need to watch your friend activity like a hawk, there’s enough here to justify swinging by the Windows Phone Store for an upgrade.

Twitter tweaks iOS app to put photos first when composing tweets
Find yourself tweeting a lot of photos this time of year? Well, the microblogging outfit has just made that task easier for iPhone users. Twitter made a change to it’s iOS app today that automatically brings up a device’s photo repository first, instead of the usual keyboard for composing a 140-character message. Need to type a text-only update? Tapping in the white box will bring up the requisite tool for doing so. It seems the company has taken notice of increased snapshot popularity as it continues to roll out new items like the recent images in Direct Messages and retooled filters. Photo-first composition shows up in the iOS version automatically without the need to update; however, there’s no mention of the feature hitting the Android app.

Aviary pauses Windows 8 and WP8 development, focuses on iOS and Android for now
We hope folks on WP and Windows 8 are A-OK with Aviary’s apps and SDKs as they are, because the company is not currently developing its products for the platforms. An Aviary representative has revealed the news in the firm’s forums, citing the “lack of general platform traction” as the reason. We reached out to CEO Tobias Peggs who confirmed that his team isn’t working on Aviary’s Windows tools this quarter. Apparently, the startup has chosen to focus on its iOS and Android products, following a tremendous growth in userbase on those operating systems. Not all hope is lost, however: according to Peggs, Aviary’s currently gathering feedback from Windows developers who’ve incorporated its image editing SDK into their own apps. Their input will be taken into account when the company makes its 2014 roadmap, which means, the CEO says, “[Aviary] may well jump back in.”

Google Play Books for Android temporarily loses PDF upload support
We hope you weren’t too attached to Google Play Books’ PDF upload support on Android, because you just lost it — albeit temporarily. Following some code sleuthing, Android Police has confirmed that Google removed PDF uploading; for now, you’re limited to transferring EPUB books. The PDF support was experimental, Google says, and should come back with a future app update. That’s unfortunate for anyone hoping to save documents to Play Books, but we won’t object too much when there are at least a few alternatives for sending PDFs to the cloud.

Foursquare updates Android app with Ken Burns effect, boosted performance
Foursquare’s rolling out a new Android app, adding in new motion effects and integrating some of this month’s iOS tweaks. That first feature, best known in the video community as the “Ken Burns effect,” animates location header images with panning and zoom. You can still scroll through the top five photos from each venue, but images up top won’t stop moving until you head over to the full-screen gallery tool. Other cosmetic adjustments include a refreshed sidebar, complete with avatar, and an updated profile page that matches the iOS equivalent. In a blog post today, Foursquare also referenced faster load times, though we didn’t notice much of a difference in a quick side-by-side test. Enhanced performance or not, the new version is clearly an improvement. It’s available today on Google Play.

Nike+ Running for iPhone now keeps you motivated with a coaching mode
Let’s face it: many people will need some motivation to shed those holiday pounds. Thankfully, an update to the Nike+ Running app for iOS is here to get folks moving. The fitness tool now includes a Nike+ Coach mode that delivers training programs based on both ambition and skill level; athletes can gently work up to a 5K or go all-out with marathon training. Should they start slacking, the app can also send run reminders and offer tips. We can’t promise that Nike’s coaching will make up for any turkey overdoses this year, but hey, the app is free — it won’t hurt to give the new feature a spin.

IMDb’s latest iOS update makes it easier to follow movie stars without getting arrested
Whatever happened to Joe Carnahan after he directed the 2002 cop classic, NARC? And what the heck is Joaquin Phoenix up to these days (aside from deeply inappropriate love affairs)? The redesigned IMDb app for iOS 7 delivers answers to these questions and more, especially now that it supports shareable “People Lists” that allow you to track the careers of actors, directors, cinematographers and pretty much anyone else who tends to work on good movies. It’s slightly tricky to figure things out at first: you have to sign in to the app, create a list and then change the list’s type from “Title” to “Name” before it’ll let you track individuals. The app also seems to lack the ability to trigger notifications when someone in your list starts work on a new film. Nevertheless, it all works smoothly once you get the hang of it and, if we’d had this feature sooner, we might well have paid more attention to the 2010 remake of The A-Team.

500px brings its photo sharing to Windows Phone
Windows Phone users wanting to browse 500px photo galleries have so far had to rely on unofficial apps, but they can now go straight to the source thanks to an official app for Microsoft’s platform. As on Android and iOS, this is primarily a passive experience; you can check out friends’ activity with the Flow feature and search for interesting snapshots, but direct uploads aren’t an option. There are two OS-specific perks, though — you can introduce 500px photos to both a Live Tile as well as your phone’s lock screen. Grab the app from the Windows Phone Store today if you’re looking for an alternative to other services like Flickr.
