Apple and Samsung agree to drop all their patent lawsuits outside of the US
So much for fighting to the bitter end — Apple and Samsung have just announced an agreement that will see them end all patent lawsuits against each other outside of the US. For those not keeping score, that means they’re dropping cases in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea and (phew!) the UK. The two tech companies aren’t automatically buddy-buddy after this, however. Besides continuing their existing American cases, they aren’t pursuing any licensing deals or other pacts that would avoid trouble in the future. Still, if you’ve been hoping that Apple and Samsung would finally make nice and focus on beating each other in the marketplace instead of the courtroom, you’re much closer to getting your wish.

In-car heads-up display lets you respond to texts with hand motions and voice
We’ve seen companies take a few stabs at smartphone-savvy heads-up displays for cars, but they tend to be one-way devices — while they’ll feed you info, you still have to reach for your phone to answer a message or get directions. Navdy may just have a smarter solution in store. Its namesake HUD not only projects car stats, navigation and notifications, but lets you interact with them through a blend of gestures and speech. You swipe with your fingers to either respond to or dismiss any alert that comes in; the system leans on the built-in voice commands from Android and iOS, so you can tell Navdy to get directions in Google Maps or play iTunes music as if you were speaking to the phone itself.
The company is getting its display off the ground through crowdfunding. If you’re willing to commit within the first 30 days, you can pay $299 for a Navdy unit instead of the $499 it will cost when it ships in early 2015. Backers will also be the first to get devices, and they’ll have input on the kinds of apps Navdy supports. The cost isn’t trivial, but it could be appealing if you want a sophisticated hands-free system that doesn’t require buying a whole new car.

Google pulls Gaza-themed Android app from Play Store following outcry
Google regularly screens Android apps in the Play Store, but it’s usually focused on blocking malware and scams rather than the substance of the apps themselves. Today, though, it took the rare step of policing content by removing Bomb Gaza, a game that made light of the current conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas. A spokesman would only tell Reuters that it pulls apps which “violate [the company’s] policies,” but the forced exit came not long after outrage from Play Store users who felt that the game trivialized very real casualties. Most likely, Google took the title down due to terms of service that forbid hate speech and abusive material; users can flag apps they find offensive, so it wouldn’t have taken much to prompt action. While the move isn’t completely surprising as a result, it’s a reminder that Google will clamp down when software is virtually tailor-made for antagonizing entire cultures.

Now you can catch Cat Fact fever from your phone
Did you know that a group of cats is called either a “clowder” or a “glaring?” No? Well, if someone decides to target you with the new Cat Facts app for Android, you’ll know a lot more about cats than that. See, you can anonymously send a series of trivia about our feline friends to anyone you want through the app. You don’t even have to make an effort at sending a stream of annoying cat texts everyday, as you can schedule the app to send out automatically. Cat Facts, for the unaware, is a popular meme that began on Reddit (the seemingly endless source of memes, reaction GIFs and controversies) a couple of years ago.
A user called “imrobert” described how he trolled a stranger with random feline trivia (“Did you know that all cats are born blind? The ability to see comes within the next couple of weeks.”) on a thread asking the best prank one’s ever pulled. His efforts have inspired another user whose Reddit thread, which shows the mental anguish his cousin suffered due to the incessant barrage of useless Felis catus info, took the website my storm. The rest, as they say, is history.
While this new Cat Facts app will make it easier to target several people at once, it only comes with five free anonymous facts, with more available through in-app purchase. If you don’t mind friends knowing that you’re the one filling their inboxes with trash, though, you can send as many texts as they want. Obviously, you can always fire up Wikipedia and DIY it on a day off, but the app saves you the trouble of having to type up cat facts yourself.

Kogan’s latest phone one-ups the Moto G LTE with a bigger screen
The Moto G LTE offers a lot of smartphone for the money, but Kogan reckons that’s not quite enough value for your hard-earned cash — the Aussie outfit just brought its latest smartphone, the Agora 4G, to the US and UK. Pay the same $219 (£149) you would for Motorola’s device and you’ll get a larger 5-inch screen, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a beefier 2,500mAh battery on top of speedy LTE data (on AT&T) and a quad-core Snapdragon processor. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
Well, we’d be a little cautious before diving in. It’s a big step up from the Agora HD we tried this spring with both a faster processor and that all-important 4G internet access, but it’s otherwise a familiar design — we’d expect the HD’s so-so camera performance and quirky software to carry over. If the Moto G LTE is a little too compact for your liking, though, the Agora 4G is likely to be on your short list of alternatives.
