HTC Nexus 9 announced for November 3

The new Nexus family is out, and the HTC Nexus 9 brings the latest iteration of Android 5.0 Lollipop, to a beautiful tablet.
The Nexus 9 comes with the typical Nexus matte back finishing, and a metal frame, which seems to be the trend with Android devices nowadays. It has a 8.9 inch IPS LCD panel, with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels, which gives it a pixel density of 288 ppi. It has a huge 6700 mAh battery, front-facing HTC Boomsound speakers, 8MP back-facing camera, 1.6MP front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, LTE antenna, the new 64-bit dual-core NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, which clocks in at 2.3 GHz, and the Kepler DX1 GPU.
Of course, it comes with all the perks and upgrades that one can expect from Android 5.0 Lollipop. However, this tablet seems to have taken a leaf out of LG’s book, as it comes with a feature called ‘double tap to wake’. It also has an accessory keyboard which is almost identical to the HTC Volantis keyboard patent leaks previously.
Pricing is currently unknown, and preorders will start on the 13th of October. It will be available from the Google Play Store and respective carriers will also soon announce pricing. The Nexus 9 will come in 16GB and 32GB variants, and in 3 different colours; Indigo black, Lunar white, and sand.

Motorola announces which devices will get Android 5.0
Now that Android Lollipop and Motorola’s enormous Nexus 6 are official, Moto has clarified which of their devices will be seeing the update to Android 5.0. The good news? If you own any kind of recent Motorola device, you’re probably getting this update.
Both the old and new Moto X will see the update, as well as all versions of the Moto G. The Moto E is also getting updated, and Verizon’s lineup of the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini are, too. That covers pretty much every major device Motorola has announced within the past two years.
No word on exactly when you’ll start seeing these updates, but Motorola has been very quick with their devices lately. Now we’ll just have to wait on HTC and others to clear things up.

Blocks, the modular smartwatch, is taking pre-orders
Although it looks like Blocks has been around for awhile, this is the first I’ve heard of them. If you’re like me and haven’t heard of Blocks here is a short run-down. Basically Blocks has created a modular smartwatch. You can pick the display you want (circle, square, rectangle) and then plug extra pieces into… Read more »

ASUS’ PadFone X mini phone-and-tablet hybrid reaches AT&T
If you liked ASUS’ PadFone X but weren’t willing to pay that much for the combination of an Android smartphone with a tablet shell, AT&T might soon have what you’re looking for. The carrier is bringing the PadFone X mini to the US on October 24th, when it will sell for $200 to GoPhone’s prepaid customers. There’s a lot of hardware here for the money, although it won’t surprise you to hear that ASUS makes sacrifices to give you two devices for the price of one. The smartphone half is a bit better than the regular PadFone mini thanks to its larger 4.5-inch screen, but you’re still looking at a dual-core Atom processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front shooter. You’re also docking into a 7-inch tablet which houses little more than a front camera and an extra battery, so don’t expect a night-and-day difference when you use the bigger screen. With that said, the PadFone X mini beats getting a budget smartphone by itself — give it a look if you’d rather not buy a separate tablet.

Controlling your Android phone with one button isn’t as great as it sounds
The Pressy one-button Android controller found an eager audience when it debuted on Kickstarter in August 2013, overshooting its original funding goal of $40,000 to the tune of almost $700,000. Inserting the Pressy into an Android phone adds an extra button that can be set for one specific action of the user’s choosing — you can take a photo, start an audio recording, enable WiFi or even turn on the flashlight. Backers were initially given a delivery date of March 2014, but shipments didn’t actually go out until June. Though that’s a fairly modest delay for a Kickstarter project, was it worth the wait? Critics weren’t exactly thrilled with the final product, with AndroidBeat saying it “isn’t a dependable button” and “doesn’t fulfill its job of quick access to shortcuts.” But with over 28,800 backers pledging to the original project, a handful of critics is far from the final word on Pressy. Over the summer, we’ve watched the reviews trickle in, and the verdict is… well, a bit mixed, to say the least.
A few users were actually quite pleased with the product, with LukeBunkers finding it “great to have a button I can configure,” while assafei says, “I love my Pressy button!” Widestorm was a little less effusive, noting that the button “extrudes out a little more than expected” and that “it sometimes takes a while for the action to complete.” Regardless, for Widestorm and a few other users it worked fine and they gave it positive reviews.
But for some users, Pressy wasn’t just slow — it didn’t work at all. Zenpez says that “several actions didn’t work or performed an action that wasn’t programmed,” and the mobile device’s battery life took a hit as well. Bayridge managed to turn the flashlight on, but then “couldn’t get it off.” On the other hand, some users couldn’t get it to work at all, with drdanmac reporting that it “stopped working after an hour,” while michelleyvonneg never even got that far, installing the app and inserting the device only to find “it doesn’t work.”
At $27, the Pressy isn’t going to break the bank, but it’s still a gamble. When it works, it has the potential to be wonderful, and PocketNow goes so far as to call it “a sound investment.” But other critics and consumers alike have found it to be a disappointment and even a scam. Drdanmac calls it a “waste,” while Bayridge advises you to “save your hard-earned money” because the Pressy is a “piece of garbage.” While it’s probably not that bad, it might be best to sit this one out for now and wait for some software updates or a new version entirely.

Google taunts Android fans with mascot audition teaser
There’s been a bit of speculation as to what moniker version 5.0 of Google’s mobile OS would take on when it arrives this fall. In a new promo video, the Android faithful are taunted with possibilities like Lemon Meringue Pie, Lemon Drop, Lady Finger and Lava Cake. Oreo is mentioned as a dark horse candidate, and it could be an option if Google decided to stick with the branded snack theme (and skips a few letters). A couple of rumored names are noticeably absent, too: Lollipop and Licorice. Of course, we’ll know soon enough when a new statue is installed in Mountain View.

Google teases Android L in latest YouTube video
Google has just published a short, “Sweeeeet” video on its official YouTube channel teasing the release of the next big update of its mobile operating system. Although the specific dessert name is still tightly under wraps, the search engine giant did confirm that “L” will be “Android 5.0″ and gave us the names of a few contestants who auditioned for the role — Lemon Meringue Pie, Lava Cake, Lady Finger, Lemon Drop and Oreo. But, of course, they’re wasn’t a Lollipop in sight.

Casting for Android L teases us with “Sweeeeet” video and a table of treats
Today is National Dessert Day. Did you know that? I certainly didn’t. Sundar Pichai did and he tweeted out a video that just recently made its debut on the Android YouTube channel. The video isn’t anything spectacular, but it is a fun little audition waiting room style shoot that shows various people in various dessert costumes that all start with “L”.
The curious video offers up titles like Lemon Meringue Pie, Lava Cake, Lady Finger and Lemon Drop. The next iteration of Android doesn’t have a publicly known name just yet. Through various leaks and chatter it would seem that Lollipop is most likely at this point. Google has been known to throw us curve balls in the past though. I can remember when Android “K” was supposed to be Key Lime Pie. There was a debugging icon, various videos and leaks that kept it Key Lime Pie in the spotlight. There was also chatter about Licorice early too. Anywho, we have no idea what Google will be calling the next Android version. We do know it will start with an L and it will be Android 5.0.
At the end of the video you see the poor Lady Finger guy chilling by the sweets table. On the table you will notice many treats. I see Eclairs, Gingerbread, Froyo, Ice Cream Sandwiches, a honeybee (Honeycomb), Jelly Beans, Kit Kat and some Easter eggs. Literally, a bowl of colored Easter Eggs. Google is pretty clever. I don’t see Cupcakes or Donuts, which would round out the naming history of Android.
There are some Lava Cakes and Lady Fingers between the Gingerbread men and Ice Cream Sandwiches. I assume a Lemon Meringue Pie is the type of pie in the back. I am not entirely sure what the bread like slices are here in the front right and the dough balls in the back (possibly donuts). What is that other cake like thing in front of the Eclairs? What I don’t see on the table are any Lollipops or Lemon drops.
The wait will soon be over as we are supposed to get an announcement tomorrow. So say the rumor mills of the internet. I know I will be watching and waiting. News of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Android L should be coming very soon.
