Cost of the Huawei Watch rumoured to be $1000, could give Apple Watch a run for its money

The Huawei Watch is a beautiful piece of design and engineering – that much is for sure. But how much would you be willing to pay for one? $250? $500? How about $1000? If you’re balking at the thought of a $1000 Android Wear device, you might not be happy to hear that the cost of […]

Rumor pins the price of Huawei’s Android Wear Watch at $1,000

huawei_watch_officialA new rumor has surfaced regarding the price of Huawei’s upcoming smartwatch, and it’s pretty ridiculous. If these rumors end up being true, Huawei could price the watch at $1,000, which is significantly higher than any other conventional Android Wear watch we’ve seen. Apple likely wouldn’t even attempt to pull off that price tag with their products.

There’s a pretty good chance this price tag could be for a special edition of the watch, or just a completely false rumor. Take it with a grain of salt and wait for an actual announcement from the company.

Hyundai updates Blue Link app with Android Wear support

Hyundai Blue Link

Hyundai’s Blue Link app, which lets users control their cars from an Android Wear device, is now live in the Play Store. The Blue Link app gives users the ability to remotely start, lock and unlock their cars, and even find the parking location in a crowded parking lot. They’ve made navigation pretty simple, too. All of the features and controls can be accessed by using a couple of taps or voice commands directly from the Android Wear-powered device. Here are all of the features the Blue Link app provides:

  • Remote Engine Start
  • Remote Engine Stop (Only available when vehicle is in remote engine start mode)
  • Remote Door Lock / Unlock
  • Remote Flash Lights / Honk Horn
  • Car Finder
  • Call Roadside
  • Call Blue Link

The app is compatible with all first and second generation Hyundai cars with Blue Link services installed, and unfortunately can’t be retrofit into cars without the technology built-in. We went hands-on with Hyundai’s Blue Link app at CES 2015, where we got to demo all of the features first-hand. If you’d like some more information on the Blue Link app, check out our hands-on video from CES 2015.

Anyone out there own a Hyundai car with Blue Link capabilities? If so, would this be reason enough to pick up an Android Wear device? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

iPhones could soon get support for Android Wear smartwatches

Moto_360_Main_Rotate_Watch_Face_01_TA

According to a French source, Google is planning to bring Android Wear to iPhone owners. This is unconfirmed at this point, but makes sense given Google’s willingness to improve Android Wear marketshare.

The smartwatch OS is currently an exclusive to Android smartphones, so it will certainly be a surprise if the company bakes in support for the competing iOS devices. This might perhaps be the only way to stop Apple device owners from getting the Apple Watch, which will release this Spring.

Even if Google does introduce support for iPhones, users won’t be able to install third party apps like on their Android devices, so functionality will be very limited. The fact that Google has merely said that they don’t have anything to share at this time sparks off speculation that the Mountain View giant is working on something.

What do you think?

Huawei Watch first look

Huawei is making a big splash at MWC 2015 with the launch of its first Android Wear-powered device, the Huawei Watch. The new Watch is the first Android Wear device to sport a display made of sapphire crystal, which is a display material that we’re only used to seeing in high-end (non-smart) watches. We got some hands-on time with the new wearable here at MWC, so let’s dive right in to our first impressions of the Huawei Watch.

huawei watch 8

We know aesthetics are completely subjective, but it’s hard to deny that the Huawei Watch is a looker. For starters, it sports a 316L corrosion-resistant stainless steel body with a circular display. It boasts a 1.4-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 400×400, which makes the display a little sharper than other Android Wear devices currently on the market. To make the design even better, it also comes with a choice of interchangeable leather or metal watch straps that are sized at 18mm. Of course, design can only get a smartwatch so far.

huawei watch 21

Performance on the watch should be no slouch either, thanks to the 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor backed by 512MB of RAM. Android Wear is a very light OS, so we couldn’t imagine this watch running slowly at all. Unfortunately, we can’t say that for sure, as our demo unit was also running demo software. We’ll need to wait for our full review to find out how it performs with Android Wear.

As for the software, we can expect to see the same Android Wear version available on all other Wear devices. However, Huawei has loaded up 40 difference watch faces to choose from, which is a welcome change from the 10-15 we usually see on Wear watches.

Specs

  • 1.4-inch AMOLED display (sapphire crystal) with a resolution of 400×400, 286ppi
  • 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of internal storage
  • 300mAh battery
  • Bluetooth 4.0/4.1
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Sensors: Gyroscope + Accelerometer, PPG, Barometer, Vibration Motor
  • Colors: Black, Silver, Gold

What do you think of the new Huawei Watch? Will this be your next Android Wear purchase?

BBM update brings PIN and Android Wear support

bbm-android-wear

Back in January at CES, BlackBerry announced that BBM would get support for Android Wear. Now it’s Mobile World Congress and they are announcing that it’s officially available. You can now read BBM messages in their entirety, respond to them via Google Now or with a pre-defined message, and accept BBM invites all from your Android Wear smartwatch.

In addition to Android Wear support, the app itself also gets PIN support. You can now create a customized 6-8 digit alphanumeric BBM PIN that’s unique and easy to share. However, you will have to purchase it for $1.99 per month.

One last addition for Android users is the ability to purchase a no-ad subscription for $0.99 per month.

New Android Wear Watch Face: IO 2015 is inspired by Google’s Material Design

Google IO 2015 (3)

One of the great things about Android is that we can customise our home screens to our heart’s content, and Google’s Android Wear platform is no different. There is a myriad of different watch faces available for download, and IO 2015 is one of the newest to hit the Play Store.

IO 2015 was created by Chanh Le, and as the name implies, inspired by the upcoming Google IO 2015. The watch face is pretty functional while still being a little funky. IO 2015 is compatible with all Android Wear smart watches, and naturally does not work with Samsung Gear or other smart watches that use different operating systems. Your smartphone also needs to be running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and up.

Features

  • Cool number animation
  • Multiple colour customisation features
  • Works for round and square watches
  • Dimmed mode

Imagine how great this would look on the Huawei Android Wear smart watch that appeared in two official videos a few hours ago. Don’t forget that Huawei is scheduled to make an announcement later today at MWC 2015 and that you can follow all our Mobile World Congress news here.
