Amazon is no longer selling the Fire Phone

After seemingly endless pricing cutbacks throughout the past year or so, it’s looking like Amazon’s Fire Phone is finally becoming extinguished. According to GeekWire, Amazon has stopped sales of the Fire Phone, most likely for good.
The product page on Amazon’s website lists the phone as unavailable, with a comment that reads “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock”. Not only that, a spokeswoman recently told GeekWire that the company sold out of its supply of Fire Phones in the U.S. and globally at the end of August. Now, there’s always a slight possibility that Amazon could get more in stock, but given the recent circumstances, that’s probably not going to happen.
The Fire Phone hasn’t ever been a hit among consumers, and that’s been made incredibly apparent by the fact that the company wrote off $170 million last October due to poor Fire Phone sales. This statistic coupled with weak penetration into the mainstream smartphone market led to dozens of layoffs of engineers that worked on the Fire Phone in Lab126, the company’s hardware development center.
If you’re interested in purchasing one of these devices before they’re gone for good, you can still find them on eBay for just over $130 with a full year of Amazon Prime.
The Amazon Fire Phone is officially off the shelves
After finally admitting defeat, Amazon’s Fire Phone is no more. Last month, Amazon revealed that the Fire Phone was a flop and started discounting the device to prices as low as $130. With a free year of Prime attached, you were essentially getting the device for only $30.
Regardless of the price cut, Amazon has seemingly run out of stock, and is officially discontinuing the Fire Phone from being sold. Amazon had big hopes to change up the mobile device market, but instead, they barely made a dent. Sub-par specs and an awkward user experience made the Fire Phone a head-scratching release.
The pricing of the Fire Phone started at $649 off contract, or $199 for two years through AT&T, but as sales took a dive, so did the price. In conversations amongst us here at AndroidGuys, we were still hesitant to pull the trigger, even at the price point of $130.
However, Amazon hasn’t given up completely on offering everyone new devices to try out. Reports have surfaced surrounding a new tablet that Amazon is gearing up to release for the Holiday season. In regards of this device, the reports are stating that it will be a 6-inch device, and will cost around $50 or less. However, it’s too early to know whether this will be another product in their Kindle Fire lineup, or something different altogether.
Sound off in the comments below about whether you picked up the Fire Phone before it went on the discontinued line.

Best Buy now selling the Nexus 6 for $350
Last week we saw Amazon drop the price of the Motorola Nexus 6 to $350. This makes sense as they’re probably trying to clear stock before the new Nexus is rumored to be announced later this month. Now we’re seeing Best Buy match Amazon.
Best Buy will normally price match Amazon prices but this is more than that. This is an official price cut to $350 instead of just a price match. We don’t know if this is a permanent deal so make sure you get yours soon if you’re interested. We still haven’t seen the Google Store drop their prices past the $499 mark. Google could be holding back on a price drop as to not tip their hand at the incoming new Nexus.
The Nexus 6 is still a very good performer and will stand up to most flagships of this year. While not as popular as it’s little brother, the Nexus 5, the device still has the advantage of a huge development community and fast updates from Google.

Amazon Prime Now includes delivery from local restaurants in Seattle
Seattle may have received the invite to Prime Now’s one-hour delivery service a bit late, but Amazon is offering customers there another feature: restaurant delivery. The service can bring you food from participating restaurants, so long as you’re situated inside a part of the city where it’s available. Via the Prime Now website, folks in Seattle can input their zip code to see if they’ll be able to have food delivered in a hour or less. Through the Prime Now mobile app, hungry customers can also browse the list of available restaurants and peruse menus before placing an order. This isn’t the first time Amazon has tackled restaurant delivery, though, as the retailer tested dropping off takeout through Amazon Local last year. If you’re looking to give the new option a go, you’ll be able to pay for meals using your data stored on Amazon and the company is waiving the delivery fees “for a limited time.”

Sign up for a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime, get a 5600 mAh battery worth $20

Amazon Prime has certainly evolved considerably over the years, adding movies, music, books, and even special Black Friday-esque sales to its resume. While these moves have certainly helped the service grow, there are still a number of folks that have yet to try Amazon Prime. Offering its 30-day free trial certainly is one way to lure these would-be users in, but now Amazon is sweetening the deal by giving away a free AmazonBasics 5600 mAh external battery as well.
As long as you sign up for a 30-day trial with an account that has never been associated with Prime, you’ll be able to get your hands on the 5600 mAh battery, valued at $20. To get started, you’ll need to visit Amazon’s promotion page and begin the free trial. Within 72 hours, you’ll get a special email code and the directions needed to get your new battery for free. After that, you can cancel Prime at any time and it won’t affect your eligibility for the free battery, though Amazon is banking on the idea that most of trial users will end up letting their subscription renew at $99 (for an entire year’s service) after the 30-day trial ends.
Keep in mind that this is a limited time offer, though Amazon doesn’t specify an end-date just yet. If you are at all interested, we’d act sooner rather than later. For those that are already on Amazon Prime, do you regret getting the service or do you find it well worth the annual subscription cost? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Amazon may be gearing up for the holidays with a sub-$50 tablet
When it comes to Amazon releasing their own devices, it has been an up-hill battle. With the exception of the Echo and Kindle E-Readers, Amazon has yet to really find it’s niche in the tablet market. There was news galore surrounding the fact that Amazon has given up on the Fire Phone, and you can now find those for as low as $125 with a year of Prime still in tact.
Reports have started coming out that Amazon is gearing up to try and hit a different part of the market share. The low, low-end. These reports are stating that Amazon is planning to release a sub-$50 tablet with a 6-inch display, for the holiday season.
When it comes to sub-$100 tablets, the market is really scarce. There are those off-brand ones, but to find a good sub-$100 is next to impossible. That is, of course, if you do not include the refurbished options and such.
Since this report is so early, it’s not yet known whether the new tablet from Amazon will be a part of the Fire family. However, if it is, the tablet would be half the cost of the lowest available Fire HD tablet, which also has a 6-inch display.
It will be interesting to see what Amazon does to try and force their way onto the market with another option. If they can deliver and bring a $50 tablet to the market in time for the holidays, combined with a decent performing tablet, it’ll be interesting to say the least.
Let us know what you think about Amazon’s rumored plans for a new tablet, and whether you think they should keep trying to gain market share.

Amazon is rumoured to be preparing a $50 tablet for this Northern Fall
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The last Amazon device I remember talking about was the much maligned Amazon Fire Phone, which was a rather terrible experiment for everybody involved – I’m sure there have been some Fire tablets released since then, but the Fire Phone was the one that really stuck out, for better or worse. Thankfully, it sounds like Amazon’s next endeavor is going to be more of a safe bet as Amazon is rumoured to be preparing a $50 tablet, which I think is something we can all get excited for.
For anyone not up to speed, Amazon tablets are actually quite good – the only downside is that they have a forked version of Android on them meaning you don’t have the benefit of Google apps, at least not natively. This pitfall aside, Amazon tablets have always managed to put up some impressive specifications for the price and we’re sure that a $50 tablet would be more of the same, and an absolute bargain with Holiday season right around the corner. The $50 tablet is said to be released sometime this Northern Fall, which is right around now, so keep your eyes and ears open.
