YouTube reveals how it will punish creators’ ‘egregious actions’

YouTube will make sure creators who step out of line can feel the consequences of their actions in a big way. After cutting off Logan Paul’s ad revenue, the video platform has revealed its new policies written to address creators’ “egregious actions.” In other words, stunts that can cause a lasting damage to the reputation of the community among advertisers and the general public. If a YouTuber does something that “results in widespread harm” to the community, the Google-owned platform may remove their channel from Google Preferred and suspend their originals. The platform may also suspend creators’ ability to earn ad revenue and even kick them out of the YouTube Partner Program. Finally, it can completely remove their channels’ ability to appear in YouTube’s home page, trending tab or watch next, effectively limiting the ways viewers can find their videos.

So, how bad does a stunt have to be to compel YouTube to hand out that kind of punishment? YouTube VP Ariel Bardin said in the post that a “heinous prank where people are traumatized” and anything that “promotes violence or hate toward a group, demonstrates cruelty or sensationalizes the pain of others in an attempt to gain views or subscribers” are good candidates. He admitted that the YouTube team felt they addressed those kinds of videos pretty slowly in the past. These new policies will help them make decisions more quickly and efficiently.

YouTube promised these stricter policies earlier this month following the massive backlash it got over Logan Paul’s controversial Aokigahara forest video. It already enforced some of those policies on Paul: in addition to suspending his ad revenue, YouTube also dropped him from Google Preferred and suspended his original projects.

Bardin also said that while YouTube believes in the freedom of expression, the company had to come up with these policies to protect its other creators. He explained in the post: the “damage [caused by some creators’ egregious actions] can have real-world consequences not only to users, but also to other creators, leading to missed creative opportunities, lost revenue and serious harm to [YouTubers’] livelihoods.”

Amazon’s delivery drones could hitch rides on trucks to save power

Amazon’s drone delivery plans have been well documented, and while the company might argue that it now has the technology in place to launch such a system, safety concerns about autonomous machines buzzing vast distances between warehouses and customer homes have prevented the Federal Aviation Administration from giving it the green light.

In the meantime, Amazon’s R&D team has been hard at work exploring various features for a viable drone delivery system. The latest, laid out in a patent granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office this week, suggests using commercial trucks operated by other companies to provide temporary transportation for delivery drones, whether they’re returning from a delivery or heading out. That’s right, Amazon’s talking about drones hitching rides on trucks.

While the idea of sticking a drone on the top of a truck seems to go against the entire premise of “delivery by drone,” such a system would conserve the drone’s battery power, and on some routes might even cut delivery time. It would also reduce the chances of drone accidents in busier areas where there are more obstacles to avoid, with the drone used to complete the so-called “last mile” delivery.

The patent’s document explains that Amazon would have agreements with the trucking companies, with the necessary components placed on top of the vehicle to safely secure the drone while it’s being carried along. Software that keeps track of the enrolled vehicles would determine the most efficient routes and rides for each drone, with the flying machines potentially hopping between several trucks on a long delivery journey.

It’s not the first time for Amazon to look at ground-based transportation for its proposed drone delivery platform. In 2017, another patent showed how it could use moving trains and ships to rapidly deploy drones to locations where customer demand “is known or anticipated,” whether through purchasing patterns “or events that are scheduled to occur in such areas.”

But unlike this latest patent where the drone would merely hitch a ride, last year’s filing suggested the mobile facilities could be “loaded with replacement parts and/or inspection equipment, and configured to conduct repairs, servicing operations, or inspections on aerial vehicles.” Once a drone is repaired or fitted with a fresh battery, it could be loaded with a delivery and sent on its way, the patent said.

Regarding battery power, Amazon has also looked into the idea of using the tops of street lights, cell towers, and church steeples as docking stations, allowing drones to recharge in stages when heading to and from distant delivery addresses.

Amazon has been filing patents linked to its Prime Air drone ever since the company’s boss, Jeff Bezos, unveiled its ambitious delivery plan in 2013. There’s no telling whether any of them will ever make it off the drawing board, but it does at least give us an insight into the kind of challenges its R&D team is considering as it seeks to build a workable drone delivery system.

Watching this A.I. program build CAD models is a peek into the future of design

Many makers now have at their disposal an artificial intelligence tool that automates the design process for 3D-printable parts without the need for 3D modeling. That means cutting out the often painstaking steps required to create functional parts, and could help make designing and engineering more seamless and efficient.

Developed by DM Labs, the research and innovation arm of 3D-printing company Desktop Metal, the A.I.-powered system, Live Parts, allows users to import constraint data from their local CAD program, automatically grow a part, and export that data for 3D printing, circumventing the tedious task of getting things to fit and hold up in the real world.

But, as with all great things in life, there’s a catch. Two actually — Live Parts is still experimental and it’s available exclusively to Solidworks users.

“Live Parts takes a new approach to generative design by applying morphogenetic principles and advanced simulation to shape strong, lightweight parts.” Jonah Myerberg, Desktop Metal CTO, told Digital Trends. “Live Parts is driven by nature-inspired algorithms that cause parts to grow and adapt based on their function and environment. Powered by a GPU-accelerated, multi-physics engine, Live Parts grows parts from individual cells and auto-generates designs in minutes. This enables users to quickly realize the full potential of additive manufacturing — including material and cost efficiency, and design flexibility.”

While other tools model multiple static load cases, Live Parts takes transitional dynamic forces in mind to accommodate the stress experienced in more real world scenarios.

“Live Parts is powered by a GPU-accelerated, multi-physics engine,” Myerberg said. “This gives Live Parts the unique ability to simulate transitional dynamic forces, such as high-frequency vibrations and low-frequency oscillations, and auto-generate parts that grow and adapt in real-time to these changing forces, much like real-world organisms grow in reaction to their changing environment. The result is parts that are evenly stressed, material efficient, strong, and lightweight.”

Since Live Parts emerged as part of a partnership with Solidworks, the widely-used CAD and CAE program, it’s currently only available as a preview within the Solidworks system. And, as an experimental system, don’t be surprised if you run across a couple bugs.

“Live Parts is under active development,” Myerberg said.

From flamethrowers to brain linking, here are Elon Musk’s 5 craziest ideas

Elon Musk is one of the most well-known entrepreneurs in tech today; a businessman whose diverse interests and eccentric persona have drawn comparisons to Henry Ford and even Tony Stark. Musk made his early fortune in software, starting an online banking site called X.com that would eventually merge into PayPal, and since then he has invested in a variety of ventures, some of which are unorthodox, to say the least. In February, his aerospace company, SpaceX, launched its most powerful rocket yet, the Falcon Heavy. Always one for panache, Musk loaded the rocket with a Tesla Roadster blasting David Bowie’s Space Oddity — but believe it or not, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his outrageous ideas. Here are some of our favorites:

Insane in the blockchain: 15 ridiculous cryptocurrencies you’ve never heard of

Contrary to what the headlines might lead you to believe, Bitcoin and Ethereum aren’t the only cryptocurrencies in the game. Over the past few years, hundreds (if not thousands) of smaller crypto-coins have popped up to capitalize on the world’s current obsession with decentralized, blockchain-based digital tokens. To give you a sense of just how crazy the space has gotten, we decided to round up some of the more ridiculous, silly, and downright stupid cryptocurrencies on the market. Enjoy!

Dogecoin

Created as a joke, based on a meme, and doing far better than it should be; Dogecoin is one of the most popular currencies in the biz, despite its jovial nature. After a record setting rise soon after its launch, the coin quickly gained footing in the crypto world, and is still being mined and traded.

Garlicoin

Created by the man who brought us the world’s first Garlic Bread Dating Simulator (yes you read that right), this garlic-based cryptocoin definitely ranks high on the list of “weird internet stuff.”.

Coinye

Formerly known as Coinye West, this musician-inspired currency is now (unfortunately) abandoned. Shortly after its inception, the currency came under fire, and was targeted in a lawsuit from Mr. West’s lawyers, who claimed that the coin’s creators illegally used the hip hop star as the currency’s mascot.

Insanecoin

Based around a blockchain called “Velocity,” Insanecoin might actually be, well, insane. Currently running pretty low, the team behind the coin appears to be giving the coins away in exchange for publicity.

Unobtanium

As you may have guessed from the name, Unobtanium was intentionally designed to be difficult to get. With pre-launch announcements, and no pre-mining beforehand, Unobtanium pushed for a transparent, fair, and more rare currency, promising a cap of 250,000 coins.

Sexcoin

Yup. Sexcoin. Designed to be an alternative payment system for the adult entertainment industry, the lewd currency offers a fee-free way to pay for certain purchases and services that you would rather keep on the down-low.

Trumpcoin

Touted as a currency for “Trump Patriots,” Trumpcoin’s mission is to use the brave new world of digital currencies to make our 45th president’s dreams for America come true.

Putincoin

Like Trumpcoin, Putincoin is ridiculously patriotic, but with a more socialist flair. Rather than strictly supporting the goals and ideals of Russia’s current leader, the Putincoin’s creators built the coin to support their country, neighbors, and the planet as a whole.

FUCKTokens

The purpose of FUCK Tokens is simple and straightforward. It was created to inspire and empower everyone around the world to “give a FUCK” — literally. Whatever your cause may be, you can now support it by giving an actual fuck.

Useless Ethereum Token

Served with a heaping helping of sass, this currency is a middle finger aimed squarely at the Cryptocurrency craze. When created, the value of each token was zero, promising investors that its value would never fall, because it couldn’t. Amazingly, despite its satirical foundations, the currency still managed to earn a whopping $62,750 during its initial coin offering.

Ethereum Classic Classic

In case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of Ethereum spin-offs — but this one may be the cheekiest of them all. After splitting off from Ethereum and founding Ethereum Classic, the creators split off again to create Ethereum Classic Classic. Ridiculous.

Venezuelan Petro

In a list full of silliness and jokes, the Petro is very serious. Announced by Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro at the end of 2017, the currency will reportedly be backed by the nation’s reserves of oil, gasoline, gold, and diamonds. While the Petro has yet to come into circulation, its creators hope that it will alleviate the current economic turmoil that Venezuela is undergoing as the value of its currency, the Bolivar, plummets.

DentaCoin

DentaCoin is “The only cryptocurrency for dentists, by dentists.” It sounds ridiculous, but DentaCoin’s goal is pretty noble, actually. It’s intended to improve dental care worldwide by making it affordable through crowd power, as well as creating a secure, traceable system for dental care.

Cthulhu Offerings

Described literally as a ritual to the elder god Cthulhu, the OFF currency speaks of sacrifice, reward, and a strange six month long bounty gifted upon a “chosen one.” This is about as weird as it gets.

The Keyport is a modular multitool for your keys and Swiss army knife

Why carry both your keys and your Swiss Army knife when you can just carry one object that contains both? If you’ve been lamenting the weightiness of your pockets or your purse and searching desperately for a way to organize the clutter that is your keychain, there may be a solution for you. Meet Keyport, a modular access device that consolidates all of your essential (or semi-essential) everyday items into a single device. And best of all, thanks to KeyportID, an online lost and found service, you shouldn’t have to worry about losing your Keyport either.

The pocket-ready device is not only a key organizer but also features a Swiss army knife whose extensions include a USB flash drive, mini-flashlight, bottle opener, and of course, a pocketknife. That means that whether you need to open your front door or open a file on your computer, the Keyport has you covered.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the Keyport is its modular design, which means that you can continue adding features and attachments to your heart’s content. Made entirely of metal, the original Keyport device is the Pivot, which boasts a “unique locking mechanism” to provide the “perfect tension to ensure smooth operation.” Promising not to loosen over time, the Pivot will hold up to up to nine keys, or up to 15 with an expansion pack.

If you lose your Pivot, don’t worry — it’s engraved with a unique serial number that finders can easily plug into an online portal, helping to connect owners with their Pivots with just a click. To be fair, that is not quite as simple as having a Tile or other Bluetooth tracker, but it’s better than nothing. And given that your Pivot will likely contain everything important, it’s obviously crucial to have a way to recover it in case of misplacement.

The Keyport line is currently available in three anodized aluminum colors — red, black, and silver. When ordering one of these organizers, you can go through an entire customization process, deciding among colors, additional inserts, expansion packs, and modules. The Pivot starts at $20, but of course, if you want to add more bells and whistles, you could soon carry your whole life in your pocket.

Here is what users are saying about that new Snapchat redesign

When Snapchat announced a redesign of the user interface last year, the company said the change could be temporarily disruptive and many users that have access to the update would probably agree. The reorganized Snapchat is only live in a handful of countries including Australia, Canada, and the U.K., with a global rollout planned before the end of March.

Even with the slow rollout, the reviews of the update have been largely negative and there are now even Change.com petitions to fix or remove the update. The updated user interface splits public posts from friends with a left swipe for friends and a right swipe for publishers, but there are a few other changes mixed in with the new organization scheme. So should you go in and turn off the automatic updates? Here’s what some users saying about the new design.

*new Snapchat update*

Snapchat: “YAHH SOMETHING NEW!”

Snaps aren’t in chronological order

Instead of chronological order,  Snaps and Stories are algorithmically ranked based on the users you interact with the most.

why is every social media app in the history of ever now NOT in chronological order….? what is the purpose of that? @ snapchat update #snapchatupdate #snapchatisoverparty

— lexy rose (@lexyrose95) February 8, 2018

Publishers may be separated from friends, but mixed with users you don’t follow

Dear @Snapchat I am not Interested on watching the stories of people I don’t even follow, obviously. I am here for my friends and some influencers I like, not random influencers or bloggers on the platform. Please, fix this. #makesnapchatgreatagain #snapchatisoverparty

— Miriam Zapata (@miriamszapata_) February 7, 2018

You should change the stories back to the way they were; but if you keep the new boxes then put them in order of when they were posted; not how you want them to be ordered. @Snapchat @snapchatsupport #snapchatupdate #snapchatisoverparty

— SHĀKIRÃ (@ItsShakiraMarie) February 8, 2018

Stories are harder to find

Stories, Snaps and messages are all mixed in on a left swipe to access the friend section rather than located in separate spots. Re-watching a friend’s Story also now requires navigating to their profile.

The only plus side to this #Snapchatupdate is that you don’t have to watch someone’s fortnite or bath bomb stories because you can’t find them!!

— Tessa Joy (@tessajoy3) February 8, 2018

Or not

I wish @Snapchat would stop trying to force me to watch people’s stories. I do not care what my friends had for breakfast this morning. #snapchatupdate

— John Turner (@johnmturner70) February 8, 2018

With more ads

Hey, Snapchat’s gotta pay the bills. Snapchat just posted a profit in the last quarter of 2017 after a rough year on Wall Street — and of course, some of that is from advertising.

Dear @snapchatsupport – we want to see our FRIENDS stories not ads. I don’t want to have to search through all my friends to view stories, I want them all to flow. Y’all won’t listen though #snapchatisoverparty

— LEXI (@sexilaba) February 9, 2018

Making Snapchat easier for new users can confuse current users

My phone updated @Snapchat and I’m livid. I’ve had #Snapchat since the beginning and I literally don’t even know how to work it now. #snapchatupdate is trash.

— Emily (@eethomaswick) February 9, 2018

But while you’re updating…

That’s all we’ve ever asked for…Thank God my snap didn’t update #snapchat #snapchatupdate pic.twitter.com/iQnLAd0pcu

— Ragnar (@RagnarsFavSon) February 7, 2018

At least the Bitmojis are good…

I’m surprised #SnapChatIsOverParty isn’t trending worldwide. @Snapchat you messed up the app. The only new thing I like is the more life like bitmoji’s. But You messed up stories; and limited the views that they get. #snapchatupdate

— SHĀKIRÃ (@ItsShakiraMarie) February 8, 2018

But Snapchat isn’t done updating

Snapchat saw its highest user growth numbers yet in the last quarter of 2017, along with growth among users older than 35. Snapchat isn’t done updating the app though — CEO Evan Spiegel said the team has already started optimizing the update based on feedback but that the team will continue optimizing the new design through the next several months.

Here’s how to give @Snapchat @snapchatsupport @Snap feedback to remove this update.. RT to spread the wave of feedback. The more people that do it, the more likely it is to be removed. #snapchatupdate #snapchatisoverparty #snapchatupdate fix #snapupdate #snapchat update pic.twitter.com/nyLJOJP9YK

Tweet with #GIFhistory to learn your favorite GIF’s origin

There’s a good chance you’ve seen a classic GIF and wondered just where it came from. But where do you start looking if the answer isn’t obvious, and you don’t want to comb through a dedicated website? If you use Twitter, you just have to ask. Filmmaker Matthew Cherry has launched an informal #GifHistory project where he’ll track down the source video for a GIF, whether it’s by himself or with the help of others. The source of that blinking reaction GIF (spoiler: it’s former Giant Bomb staffer Drew Scanlon) may be a quick tweet away.

We wouldn’t treat #GifHistory like an AI assistant — there’s only so much a few humans can do. Even so, an effort like this might be more important than it seems at first glance. GIF creators seldom provide context in the first place, and when they do it’s frequently buried deep in a web forum (assuming there’s even an archive at all). Projects like this not only satisfy curiosity, they help explain and preserve little slices of internet history.

The original video is from a rap battle on Desawn Raw’s youtube channel from his alter ego Supa Hot Fire. pic.twitter.com/tf1lWl5upk

How to check battery health and disable iPhone performance throttling in iOS

A few years ago, Apple quietly introduced a performance management feature for the iPhone that prevents phones with older, degraded batteries from shutting down unexpectedly. While the feature is effective in stopping unexpected shutdowns, the price is a decline in performance. It’s why there was a huge backlash at the time of discovery, and why Apple is offering cheaper prices for battery replacements because it’s an easy way to fix the problem.

With the release of iOS 11.3, Apple added a tool that provides information about the state of your battery and allows you to disable the performance management feature — at the risk of unexpected shutdowns. It’s like a “check engine” light, but for your phone. Here is how to use it.

Battery health messages

If you own an iPhone 6 or later, you will now see a Battery Health feature in iOS 11.3. To view information about your battery, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. You see one of the following messages:

Apple

Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.

This message means your battery is in good health, it’s capacity is above 80 percent, and no performance management features have been applied to your phone.

Apple

This iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. Performance management has been applied to help prevent this from happening again. Disable…

When you see this message, it means a battery issue caused your phone to shut down. A number of different issues can cause this message to appear including a degraded or damaged battery or extreme weather conditions. You can disable performance management features by tapping Disable.

If you continue to see this message, you probably want to get your battery checked out.

Apple

Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity. More about service options…

You’ll see this message once the maximum capacity of your battery falls below 80 percent. While you’re likely experiencing performance issues, you can continue using your phone without causing any harm. Replacing your battery will likely cause noticeable performance improvements.

Apple

This iPhone is unable to determine battery health. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can service the battery. More about service options…

There are two reasons why you’d see this message. The first, and most likely, reason is that you had an unauthorized service provider install a new battery. Less likely is because there is a battery issue unrelated to its age. Either way, if you’re noticing decreased performance, you will want to have your battery serviced by an Authorized Service Provider.

How performance management works

Apple

The performance management feature in iOS 11.3 can’t be toggled on and off. You will only see the option to disable performance management when your phone has unexpectedly shut down due to a battery issue. Once you disable performance management there is no way to enable it unless another battery-related event causes an unexpected shutdown. Once you disable performance management, you will see a message stating, “This iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. You have manually disabled performance management protections.”

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X owners

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X have a different performance management feature than their predecessors. Since these devices have upgraded software and hardware components, they are better equipped to deal with battery fluctuations without affecting overall performance. With this in mind, you are probably not going to see performance dips on these devices until the battery has significantly degraded.

The new Battery Health feature is currently available in the iOS 11.3 developer beta. It will hit the public beta soon and the feature will officially roll out in the final version sometime this spring. You can check out our guide on how to enroll in the iOS beta to access it sooner.

Live news channels come to the iEmpire’s TV app for iOS and Apple TVs

When Apple first introduced the Apple TV 4K in September, one of the new features it touted for it as well as the earlier fourth-generation Apple TV was the integration of live-streamed news. Now that feature has finally arrived, neatly integrated into the platform’s TV app, which means it is also available on the iPhone and iPad, as 9to5 Mac reports.

The news services included are all U.S-focused, so at least for the time being, this feature is going to be useful mostly to those located in the U.S. Networks providing news content include Bloomberg, CBS, Cheddar, CNBC, CNN, and Fox News. After navigating to the News tab in the TV app, you’ll see an icon for each news service. Tapping that icon will bring you to that app if you have it installed, or prompt you to install it from the App Store if you have not yet installed it.

Once you have the apps installed, you don’t need to bother with opening the TV app if you don’t feel like it, or even finding the app entry on the home screen. Instead, you can use Siri and a command like “Hey Siri, let’s watch Cheddar,” or “Play Bloomberg.”

If this feature sounds a little familiar, it’s because it’s pretty much the same as the sports integration that came to the Apple TV in November, only with news sources instead. Still, if you’re a news junkie, this makes keeping up to date much easier, especially if you prefer to have news on in the background and don’t feel like reaching for the remote every time you want to switch to a different news network.

This feature is currently live, and should be available to you as long as you’re running the latest tvOS 11.2.5 or iOS 11.2.5 update. While we weren’t originally thrilled with the Apple TV 4K, these new features, combined with a fix to the forced-HDR problem it originally shipped with and more support from popular streaming services, is making it look like a better and better option, especially if you’re heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem.

If this still doesn’t have you convinced, there are plenty of other streaming boxes out there, so take a look at some of our favorites.
