Apple’s 2019 iPhone could have a rear-facing 3D sensor
Apple has made no secret of its interest in augmented reality (AR) — in interviews CEO Tim Cook gives it as much attention as sales growth. Now, it’s rumoured that the company’s 2019 iPhone release will come with a rear-facing 3D sensor, potentially turning the model into a leading AR device.
People familiar with the plan have revealed that the sensor would complement, not replace, the existing TrueDepth sensor on the front of the iPhone X, Bloomberg reports. The current technology, which supports Apple’s Face ID, works by projecting a pattern of 30,000 laser dots onto the user’s face, measuring distortion to generate a 3D image for authentication. The proposed sensor would use a “time-of-flight” method instead, calculating the time it takes for a laser to hit surrounding objects, creating a 3D image from that.
Apple released ARKit this year, a software tool that helps developers make AR-based apps for iPhone. It’s proven successful with basic AR tasks, but struggles with more complex visuals and lacks depth perception. It’s thought a rear-facing 3D sensor would help mitigate these issues. However, sources say that the tech is still in its infancy, and might not be used in the final version of the phone. But there’s certainly no shortage of companies manufacturing time-of-flight sensors, so if it doesn’t make it into the 2019 model, it’s likely that it — or some kind of incarnation of the technology — will follow soon after.

Adobe Scan Gains Automatic Document Detection, iOS 11 Files Support
Adobe Scan, Adobe’s document scanning app, was today updated with new features that are designed to make it easier to locate and access scans of receipts, documents, and more.
With Adobe Sensei machine learning integration, Adobe Scan is now able to scan the photos in your camera roll to locate all images that appear to be documents, so they can be automatically imported into the Adobe Scan app for storage purposes.
The new feature is designed to make it easier to keep track of all of your receipt and document photos, aggregating them in one place so it’s no longer necessary to search through all of your photos to find the relevant images.
There’s no longer a need to sift through hundreds or even thousands of images to find what you’re looking for. In fact, Adobe Scan is the only free app that automatically searches for documents, receipts, business cards, and more, so that you can find what you need fast.
Along with Adobe Sensei integration, Adobe Scan is being updated with support for the iOS 11 Files app. All Adobe Scan files can be accessed through Files, making document management easier.
There are also new search tools to make it easier to find files by name or date, and Adobe has added improved image cleaning specifically designed to better handle shadows and folds for clearer scans.
Adobe Scan can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Mozilla Releases Firefox 57 ‘Quantum’ Web Browser
Mozilla on Tuesday officially announced Firefox 57, the new “Quantum” version of its flagship desktop web browser for Mac, Linux, and Windows. Aside from a redesigned interface and a slew of new UI features, Mozilla says Quantum offers speeds twice as fast as Firefox 52 and a new engine that uses 30 percent less memory than Google Chrome.
The performance advantages are said to be down to Firefox’s “just right” multi-process architecture, which uses separate processes to run its user interface and tabbed web page content. These additional processes are able to run across multiple CPU cores, making it much less likely for open web pages to negatively impact each other or the performance of the web browser in general.
While both Firefox and Chrome now run using multiple processes, Mozilla claims to have done things differently to avoid using up precious working memory. Chrome creates a separate content process for each open tab, and each tab typically consumes hundreds of megabytes of RAM, which has earned the browser a reputation as a resource hog.

Where Quantum differs, claims Mozilla, is in its more conservative approach to using multiple processes. By default, Firefox now creates up to four separate processes for web page content, so the first four tabs each use those four processes, and additional tabs run using threads within those processes. This leads to multiple tabs within a process sharing the browser engine that already exists in memory, instead of each one creating their own.
In addition to the under-the-hood improvements, the redesigned “Photon” user interface offers a less cluttered, more minimalist environment for browsing the web and aims to look better on modern high DPI displays. It also adds several new features including a built-in tool to take screenshots, and a new library for putting things like browsing history, bookmarks, Pocket lists, and synced tabs in one convenient place.
Firefox 57 also includes support for WebVR, which enables websites to take full advantage of VR headsets like the HTC Vive, while Mozilla’s Pocket service is now more integrated in the browser and displays trending articles on the new tab page. Last but not least, a new feature called Tracking Protection blocks extensive requests for online user tracking. It works by default in the Private browsing window and Mozilla reckons it reduces the average page loading time by around 44 percent.

With all the changes, Firefox has had to lose support for many existing extensions written in XUL. Firefox Quantum only supports WebExtensions, which have more limitations, similar to Chrome extensions. Existing users can check the status of their extensions by navigating to Menu -> Add-Ons. Compatible ones are shown under “Extensions”, while deactivated browser extensions appear under “Legacy Extensions” alongside an option to find the closest equivalent replacement available.
If you’re already a Firefox user, you should receive an automatic upgrade to Quantum after restarting the browser. For everyone else, Firefox Quantum is available for macOS as a free download directly from the Mozilla website.

Ten One Design’s New Mountie+ Lets You Mount Your iPad to Your MacBook as a Second Screen
Ten One Design is today introducing the Mountie+, a new version of its popular Mountie device that allows an iPad or iPhone to be attached to the display of a Mac laptop for use as a second screen.
The Mountie+ mount for the iPad has been designed with larger devices in mind. Mountie+ uses a two-clip system to attach an iPhone or iPad to a MacBook, and it works with all iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini tablets. It’s also compatible with all MacBooks and “every other laptop,” according to Ten One Design. The standard Mountie, which is also still available, works well with smaller tablets and the iPhone.

Mountie+ also incorporates a new feature that allows an iPad to be charged while it’s attached to a MacBook, by tucking the iPad’s charging cable around the back where it can then be plugged in to an adapter. It’s designed to make it quick and easy to snap an iPad on and off of the MacBook.

When attached to a MacBook via Mountie+, there’s only 4mm of space between the iPad and the MacBook screen, making it easy to see both displays at once. Mountie+ lets the iPad be mounted in either landscape or portrait mode.
“Remote working and co-working is growing; we can see that trend as our customers look to use their iPads and other portable devices as second or even third screens,” said Peter Skinner, founder of Ten One Design. “Even if it’s just for watching Stranger Things. We don’t judge.”
The Mountie+ can be pre-ordered from the Ten One Design website for $34.95. It will begin shipping out in December.

As Chrome tarnishes, Mozilla is ready to reignite Firefox with Quantum
“Don’t be evil.” That’s been Google’s motto since it was first unveiled in 2000, and for years that attitude shaped the company’s attitudes, outlook, and products. And it helped turn the fledging Chrome web browser into the most popular platform on the Internet, with nearly 60 percent of the market (Internet Explorer is the next closest, with 15 percent, according to NetMarketShare).
But a funny thing happened on the way to world dominance: business. Today, talk about Google is equally spread between its efforts to do good – bringing the web to Puerto Rico or pushing renewable energy – and the company’s dominance of online advertising and overall monopoly status.
Isn’t there an alternative, you might be wondering? Meet Mozilla – again.
On Tuesday, the do-gooders at the not-for-profit Mozilla Foundation unveiled Quantum, the latest version of the browser that’s had more lives than Wilt Chamberlain’s had female acquaintances. Jascha Kaykas-Wolff, chief marketing officer for Mozilla, says Quantum represents two things: the Foundation’s nonprofit attitude and several years’ worth of work tinkering with code.
“Connecting that do-good mentality with creating the best possible browser — that’s our superpower,” Kaykas-Wolff told Digital Trends.
Quantum is a slick and modern-looking browser, not the old-school Firefox you might be accustomed to. The new UI and design language even puts Chrome’s brand of minimalism to shame — by comparison, Chrome looks dated.
The new UI and design language even puts Chrome’s brand of minimalism to shame.
The new design is the result of behind-the-scenes labors known as the Photon Project, a research initiative dedicated to digging deep into what people expect from their browsers. It worked. Quantum feels like a modern browser should. Tabs are squared, animations are glassy-smooth, and all the settings and preferences are right where they should be.
“The user experience is as important as the guts. The nuances, the way the tabs interact with pages, the way the download buttons work. The experience itself feels vastly different,” Kaykas-Wolff said.
Thanks to Project Photon, which yielded a new parallel processing browser engine called Servo, Firefox Quantum feels a bit more intuitive than other browsers. Even if you haven’t used Firefox for years, jumping into Quantum feels just familiar enough that you know where everything is, but different enough that you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised by little design flourishes here and there. (Read more in our full hands-on review.)
The new browser is part of a new attitude at Mozilla, which might just be the most earnest group on the Internet. Mozilla’s motto is getting you where you want to go faster, so to introduce consumers and reviewers to the project, Mozilla’s marketing team chartered a high-powered ferry in the New York City area. You can take Mozilla to work today and tomorrow, and when you get there, take the browser for a spin.
Mozilla views itself as a champion of the Internet, and takes that seriously – Internet health, web literacy, all that jazz. Last fall, it curated an art project to explore Internet privacy that featured a “Data Detox Bar” to let you cleanse your data from the web while you detox your body with a veggie smoothie. Facebook studies its users like an entomologist does a mosquito, so another artist put the social network itself under the microscope: He created a scale model of Zuckerberg’s house, and mounted it under a glass bell jar — with floor plans nearby for the four houses that surround his, which Zuckerberg also bought.
“You get the social benefit of supporting an organization like Mozilla.”
In the same vein, Mozilla held “self-defense” classes to discuss best practices for privacy and protection online, and incorporated physical self-defense lessons as well. Tae Kwon do anyone? To that end, there’s a new motto: faster for good, meant to reflect both the browser’s speed and the ideology that built it.
“It’s a nod to who builds Firefox. And it’s Mozilla, you get the social benefit of supporting an organization like Mozilla,” Kaykas-Wolff said.
Kaykas-Wolff calls Quantum’s target audience “The Conscious Consumer.” It’s someone who chooses to buy products with an understanding of their values, who supports farm to table, who indexes higher on privacy and security. Who knows what conflict minerals are and how to avoid them. This group makes 17 to 20 percent of the Internet population, he says.

HTC Vive Focus is a standalone VR headset powered by the Snapdragon 835
HTC’s standalone VR headset comes with ‘world-scale’ tracking.
HTC teased a standalone VR headset for the Chinese market earlier this year, and the company has now unveiled the product at a media event in Beijing. Dubbed the Vive Focus, the headset is the “first commercial standalone device” with inside-out 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF), which means it doesn’t need a base station to track your movements.

The “world-scale” tracking — made possible by front-mounted cameras — lets you use the headset anywhere, and as the device is powered by a Snapdragon 835, you don’t need to tether it to a PC or a phone. The Vive Focus features a “high-resolution” AMOLED screen with “low latency and unmatched clarity,” along with a rotational head strap and a Bluetooth controller that offers 3DoF.
HTC also announced Vive Wave, a VR open platform that lets developers easily create content for mobile VR devices. With Daydream not available in China, HTC is positioning its Viveport store as the default gateway for customers looking to access VR content. The company picked up 12 hardware partners for its platform — including the likes of 360QIKU, Nubia, Pico, Quanta, iQIYI, and others — and HTC is betting on interoperability between VR devices as the differentiator for Vive Wave.
From Alvin Wang Graylin, HTC China’s regional president:
We’re delighted that the VIVE Wave VR open platform is receiving such strong industry support from both hardware partners and developers.
As the VR industry leader in China, it is our duty to help reduce market fragmentation and provide content developers with more ways to make money. VIVE Wave will assure a higher consistency in the user experience on a variety of mobile VR devices across various price points, making quality VR more accessible to the mass market.
What’s more, with the new VIVE Focus, we are excited to bring high quality 6DoF VR experiences, which were previously only available on tethered devices, in a more convenient and portable form factor.
HTC hasn’t detailed pricing or availability yet, but the Vive Focus will be sold initially in China. The Taiwanese manufacturer has stated that it is looking to attract a mainstream audience, and considering Oculus’ $199 standalone VR headset is set to arrive sometime next year, it’ll be interesting to see where the Vive Focus slots in.
Xiaomi joins Samsung at the top of India’s smartphone segment
Xiaomi catches up with Samsung to become India’s largest smartphone brand.
The Indian smartphone segment is booming. According to IDC, over 39 million smartphones were shipped in Q3 2017, an increase of 40% from the second quarter of 2017 and a 21% uptick from Q3 2016. As a result, India accounted for 10% of all smartphone shipments around the world.
The quarter also saw a drastic uptick in sales from e-commerce stores, with a third of all shipments attributed to online storefronts. Samsung and Xiaomi predictably led the way for sales, with both brands now tied for first place in the Indian smartphone segment.

Xiaomi had a stellar 2017, with the company fielding three of the best-selling devices in the country with the Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, and Redmi 4A. The company saw a 3x increase in YoY shipments, and doubled its figures from Q2 2017, allowing it to net a market share of 24%, the same as Samsung.
With the e-commerce segment set to play a key role in sales in the coming quarters, it’s only a matter of time before Xiaomi edges past Samsung. From IDC India’s senior analyst Jaipal Singh:
eTailers have popularized many trends in the Indian smartphone market, like making devices more affordable through easy financing options, attractive exchange offers on existing smartphones. On the back of fresh infusion of funds and focus on India market, the eTailers are expected to remain aggressive in 2018 as well.
Online channel in India sees a seasonal spike peaking in Q3 on the back of multiple round of online sales following up to festival months in India. However, it is gradually becoming an integral part of the omni-channel strategy for almost all vendors with online exclusive model launches and partnerships with e-tailers during these sales.
Xiaomi shipped 9.2 million smartphones in Q3 2017, with the Redmi Note 4 alone accounting for four million shipments. After dominating the online segment, the company is now turning its attention to the offline sector by inking partnerships with leading large format stores.
As for Samsung, the South Korean brand saw a 39% QoQ growth and a 23% increase from the same period a year ago. The Galaxy J series is samsung’s best-selling lineup in India, and the Galaxy J2, Galaxy J7 Nxt, and Galaxy J7 Max led the way in terms of shipments. Meanwhile, Lenovo is now at third place, with Motorola now accounting for two-third of the brand’s sales.
Vivo and OPPO had a modest quarter (by their standards), with the brands occupying fourth and fifth places in the subcontinent. The offline channel as a whole didn’t see the kind of growth witnessed by e-commerce sites, but it’s still the “dominant channel” in India:
After an online dominated pre-and post-Diwali period, the offline channel went through a rather soft festive period. eTailers will continue to be a big driving force for smartphone growth in India, although vendors’ offline focus will continue to keep retail as the dominant channel in India.
It will be interesting to see how exclusive partnerships between telcos and vendors, own smartphones brand launches by e-Tailers and availability of dual cameras, bezel less screens at more affordable price points, shape up in the coming quarters.
Nougat is now installed on 20.6% of active Android devices
Nougat is making steady gains, but Marshmallow is still the most-used version of Android.
A year after its release, Nougat is now installed on 20.6% of active Android devices. Android 7.0 Nougat has a 17.6% market share, with 7.1 coming in at 3%. Oreo made its first appearance last month with a 2% market share, and a month later it’s at 0.3%. With few devices outside the Pixels, Nexus devices, and the Xperia XZ1 running Oreo, it’ll be a while before we see any tangible gains for the latest version of Android.

Marshmallow is still the most-used version of Android at 30.9%, but it’s slowly starting to lose steam. Lollipop and KitKat have similarly dropped percentage points, and are now at 27.2% and 13.8% respectively. November was particularly good for Nougat, which saw a 2.8% increase across both 7.0 and 7.1 versions. That uptick will hopefully continue in the coming months.

How I turned my Samsung Galaxy S8 into a Microsoft phone

Microsoft loves mobile, as long as you’re using an iOS or Android device. In fact, turning your Android into a Microsoft centric phone is pretty easy.
Microsoft’s new mobile effort revolves around bringing the best of Windows 10 to Android and iOS. Now that Windows 10 Mobile is all but dead, it’s time to start embracing Microsoft’s new goal; making Android and iOS better for Windows users. Timeline, Cloud Clipboard and Continue on PC are all Windows 10 features that aim to tie your Android or iOS device to your PC further, and vice versa.
I recently went out and purchased a Samsung Galaxy S8 with the intention of turning it into my new Windows phone. Now, calling it a Windows phone isn’t entirely accurate since it’s not running Windows; so I like to call it a Microsoft phone. It’s a smartphone that’s loaded up with Microsoft software and services, and outside of live tiles and UWP apps, it has everything my Lumia Windows phone had, and that’s fantastic.
See Samsung Galaxy S8 at Amazon
Microsoft has made switching from Windows phone to Android or iOS incredibly easy, so much so my Android phone feels even more connected to my Windows 10 PC than my Windows 10 Mobile device ever did. Things such as Microsoft’s own Android Launcher, Edge, Cortana, Outlook and OneDrive bring all the features and functions I need out of the Windows experience on my phone.

I’ve even reprogrammed the dedicated Bixby button to launch Cortana instead, using an app called bxActions. When I press the dedicated button, it launches the Cortana app. If I hold the button down, it takes me immediately to voice mode where I can say commands and have Cortana do things. It’s super handy having a dedicated Cortana button on the side, as it makes adding things like reminders or checking the weather super convenient.
I use Edge because it uses my Microsoft account to sync data, not because of the underlying engine.
Using Edge on Android is a nice addition, as it syncs your bookmarks and form data across your PC and phone. I don’t care that it’s using the Chrome engine underneath, because I don’t have an issue with Chrome’s engine. I use Edge because it uses my Microsoft account to sync data, not because of the underlying engine. Being able to continue files and web pages on my PC from my phone is also super convenient, more so than I was originally expecting.
More to come
This will improve over time, too. With Timeline and Cloud Clipboard in Windows 10 Redstone 4 builds, apps and things you copy will also be transferable across devices. Near Share is a new feature in the works for Windows 10 right now too, which will undoubtedly be coming to Android phones; allowing you to share files, photos and more instantly between your PC and phone directly from the Share UI on Windows 10.

The only things I need from Microsoft to complete my Microsoft experience is a dedicated Phone and SMS app. Once I’m able to make cellular calls or send SMS texts from a dedicated app on my PC and phone that sync that data across devices, my Microsoft smartphone experience will be complete. It’d also be nice to see a Movies & TV app on Android or iOS, but that’s not a priority for me.
The beauty of Android is that it’s an open platform. Sure, most Android phones come bundled with Google services, which isn’t ideal if you’re someone who isn’t into Google’s ecosystem; but the good news is you can essentially replace all of that with Microsoft’s own offerings. You can set Edge as your default web browser, Microsoft’s Launcher as your default home experience, OneDrive as your photos cloud backup solution, Outlook as your default email and calendar client, and more.
The beauty of Android is that it’s an open platform.
You can also download package disablers, which I don’t actually recommend unless you know what you’re doing. Package disablers allow you to disable some software and services that Google and OEMs bundle onto Android devices. For example, I used a package disabler to disable some of the things Samsung includes on the Galaxy S8, including Samsung Cloud, TouchWiz, Bixby and even Samsung’s built-in keyboard. I don’t want or use Samsung’s services. Of course, most people, even Microsoft users, won’t want to disable these.

I also personally like to disable pretty much everything Google on my Android, outside of Google Play Services and the Play Store. I disabled everything from Chrome to the Google Assistant, as Microsoft offers alternatives in that regard. If Microsoft has an app that does something Google or Samsung offers, then I’m absolutely going to be disabling the Google and Samsung offering in favor of Microsoft’s.
Windows 10 Mobile is no longer the best choice for Microsoft fans
If you’re still using Windows 10 Mobile because you think Windows phone still offers the optimal “Microsoft” experience, it’s time to re-evaluate that thought process. Microsoft has put so much work into making Android and iOS ‘the’ platforms for Microsoft software and services on mobile that Windows 10 Mobile simply doesn’t hold a candle to the integrations and features Microsoft apps have on other platforms anymore.
If you’re still using Windows 10 Mobile because you think Windows phone still offers the optimal “Microsoft” experience, it’s time to re-evaluate that thought process.
Redstone 4 will see this trend continue. Microsoft is building features into Windows 10 on PC that tie directly into the apps and services available on iOS and Android. This is not something that is happening on Windows 10 Mobile. As we have reported in the past, Microsoft is leaving Windows 10 Mobile behind with feature2, with no new features in development. Windows 10 Mobile doesn’t have an ecosystem to support it anymore.
Sure, Windows 10 Mobile still works today, and it will continue to work for a long time. However, Microsoft isn’t going to be building experiences that benefit Windows 10 Mobile and PC integration anymore. That focus is now on Android and iOS, and that’s incredibly exciting. If you’ve decided to remain on Windows phone, just know that your tight integration between your PC and phone is now matched on rival platforms, and will quickly find that over time, Android and iOS phones will have better integration compared to what Windows 10 Mobile can offer.
