GarageBand for iOS Gains iPhone X Support, New Sound Library for Downloading Instruments

Apple today updated its GarageBand for iOS app to version 2.3, bringing support for the Super Retina OLED display of the iPhone X and introducing a new Sound Library designed to let users download additional free instruments, loops, and sound packs.

Apple highlighted the new update in a Newsroom press release that goes over all of the new features.

With the GarageBand Sound Library users can now preview and download new Apple-designed sounds and instruments right within the app. These free, downloadable sound packs contain a variety of Touch Instruments, Apple loops, Live Loops templates, guitar and instrument presets and more. Users can access the Sound Library from multiple places within GarageBand and will receive alerts when new sound packs are available. Initial sound packs include Future Bass, Reggaeton, Beat Sequencer kits, guitar amp tones and more. New sound packs will be released periodically by Apple.

There are three new Drummers in Pop, Songwriter, and Latin styles, along with support for new traditional instruments from China and Japan like the Guzheng, Koto, and Taiko drums. GarageBand users can also use the Beat Sequencer to create music inspired by classic drum machines, and there is an iMessage sticker pack with GarageBand instrument icons.

Along with support for the iPhone’s display, the update allows GarageBand to work with the Files app in iOS 11 for expanded sharing and storage, plus there’s a new larger Audio Unit Extensions view for use with compatible third-party instruments. Full release notes for the update are below:

Apple has also updated its Logic Remote app for iOS devices with support for the iPhone X’s display and touch instrument controls like guitar, bass, drums, and chord strips.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 43 With Bug Fixes and Feature Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced more than a year ago in March of 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview release 43 includes fixes and improvements for Web Animations, ImageBitmap, Geolocation API, Drag and Drop, CSS, Rendering, WebGL, JavasScript, Web Inspector, Web API, Web Driver, Payment Request, Subresource Integrity, and Accessibility. Today’s update also activates the Cache Storage API by default and adds new CacheStorage functionality.

With Safari 11 now available in macOS High Sierra, Apple is providing two versions of Safari Technology Preview, one for macOS Sierra users and one for those using macOS High Sierra.

The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple’s aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Apple Releases First Beta of iOS 11.2 for Public Beta Testers

Apple today released the first public beta of iOS 11.2 to its public beta testing group, one day after seeding the beta to developers and more than a month after releasing the iOS 11 update. The new iOS 11.2 beta comes just after the release of iOS 11.1, which was provided to the public yesterday.

Beta testers who are members of Apple’s beta testing program will receive the iOS 11.2 beta update over-the-air after installing the proper certificate on an iOS device.

Those who want to join the beta testing program can sign up on Apple’s beta testing website, which gives users access to iOS, macOS, and tvOS betas. iOS betas are not always stable and should not be installed on a primary device.

While there are several major features that Apple has promised will come in later iOS 11 updates, including AirPlay 2, peer-to-peer Apple Pay, and iCloud support for iMessages, none of these features appear to be present in the current iOS 11.2 beta.

The iOS 11.2 update fixes an animation bug in the Calculator app that caused some numbers and symbols to be ignored when entered in rapid succession. The update removes the animations from the calculator app so calculations can be done quickly with no need to pause between entering numbers to obtain the correct result.

In addition to the Calculator bug, iOS 11.2 introduces a new Now Playing option for controlling content on the Apple TV in Control Center, redesigned camera emoji, and a new loading animation for Live Photos effects.

Apple Seeds First Beta of tvOS 11.2 to Public Beta Testers

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming tvOS 11.2 update to its public beta testing group, one day after seeding the tvOS 11.2 update to developers. tvOS 11.2 comes just after the release of tvOS 11.1, the first update to tvOS 11.

The tvOS 11.2 public beta can be obtained by going to the Settings app on the Apple TV and navigating to the Software Updates section under “System.” “Get Public Beta Updates” will need to be toggled on, and once it is, the Apple TV will download the beta software.

According to Apple’s release notes, the tvOS 11.2 update enables a new AVDisplayManager feature for developers, designed to allow the device to automatically switch video display modes to match the native frame rate and dynamic range of video content.

The update includes support for switching the Apple TV 4K display output to SDR for apps that are GPU-bound when running in HDR and it re-introduces the Unwatched category in Home Sharing for Movies, TV Shows, and Home Videos.

Apple says it also adds new features, bug fixes, and security improvements to the tvOS operating system.

How annoying is the camera notch while using the iPhone X?

One major feature of the iPhone X is how it can unlock the screen with just your face — also known as Face ID. It’s the new replacement for Touch ID, because there’s no longer a home button. Instead of chunky edges around the screen, you’ll have to settle for a “notch” at the top, where the front-facing camera and the sensors for Face ID sit.

But people have already expressed dissatisfaction with the notch on the iPhone X, and some don’t like it at all. In our day-to-day use, we generally liked the look of the operating system flanking the notch, but we did find it broke immersion when watching YouTube videos or movies on Netflix. It can be distracting.

iOS splits the top status bar in two with information on both sides. On the right of the notch, we’ll call it a “shoulder,” you’ll see the battery, Wi-Fi, and cellular status. On the left shoulder is the clock. When the device is locked, the clock is placed in the middle of the screen and the left shoulder shows your carrier instead. The right shoulder is also where you swipe down to access the Control Center.

Apps need to support the iPhone X screen

Some social media apps already have added support for the iPhone X. When you open apps such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, the interface blends in nicely with the notch. It will look the same as it does when you’re on the home screen or lock screen of your device, with all of the same information on its respective sides of the notch.

YouTube is another app that has already been updated to work with the iPhone X. The pinch the screen and the video will take over the full display, giving you an immersive experience. Doing this means you’re slightly cropping the video to fit the iPhone X screen, and that may mean cutting off the top of the video. With Netflix, you’ll need to double tap the screen to go into this immersive mode.

But there are still a large amount of apps that do not support the full display. These will easily stand out, because you’ll see large black bars on the top and bottom of the screen — making your iPhone X look like an iPhone 8. You won’t have trouble with Apple’s apps, but even Google has yet to add support for most of its apps. Slack, Trello, even Snapchat are just a few of the apps we saw that have yet to add support for the full display.

Apple told Digital Trends more and more apps are starting to submit updates adding support for the iPhone X, and we’ll likely see most apps adopting the full screen in the coming weeks.

Google Poly makes it easier to discover and remix 3D objects and scenes

Why it matters to you

Google introduces a repository for 3D objects and scenes to be shared, searched, downloaded, and remixed by AR and VR creators and developers.

With ever-increasing support for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) hardware and applications, there’s an equally growing need for 3D objects and scenes to populate AR/VR environments. Google has been offering a number of tools to make it easier to create those 3D assets for several months now, including the development of the free Tilt Brush and Blocks solutions and their associated websites. Now, there’s a new site, Google Poly, that makes it easy for creative types both share and access a warehouse of 3D objects and scenes.

Poly is fully integrated with Tilt Brush and Blocks, letting creators directly publish their creations from both tools. Tilt Brush is a VR-based toolkit that helps 2D artists make the transition to working in 3D, and Blocks also works within a VR environment to allow nontechnical people to create 3D objects.

In addition, OBJ files can be directly uploaded to Poly. Already, the site is fully stocked with thousands of 3D objects and scenes in easily searchable categories such as Animals & Creatures, People & Characters, and Technology. Users can also filter results to include Tilt Brush sketches and Blocks objects, to show only those that allow remixing, and to select by publish date.

The 3D objects that are uploaded to Poly are published under a Creative Commons public license and many are fully remixable. That means that they can be imported into Tilt Brush or Blocks and edited. When the remix is subsequently published, Poly then automatically links to the original asset and credits the original creator.

In addition, anyone can check out the 3D objects in a mobile or desktop browser and search for new creations using keywords. The objects can also be shared via animated GIF, with the ability to select aspect angles and animation speed, or viewed using Cardboard or Daydream View.

If you’re interested in getting started with creating or accessing 3D objects for VR, Google’s ARCore, or Apple’s ARKit, you can visit poly.google.com. Google will be issuing an application programming interface (API) for Poly, and developers can sign up for the preview beginning Wednesday, November 1.

Google removes warranty deductibles from Pixel 2 Preferred Care insurance

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL warranty deductibles previously cost $79 and $99, respectively.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are not cheap phones, and as such, some users will rightfully want to add an insurance plan when buying them to ensure they’re protected from just about anything. Google sells a Preferred Care service alongside the Pixel 2/2XL for $129, and thanks to the recent removal of deductibles, it’s now an even better deal than ever.

Preferred Care still costs the same at that $129 price, but rather than having to shell out a $79 or $99 deductible for the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL, respectively, when making a claim, Google is dropping these added costs entirely in favor of two claims for free during Preferred Care’s two years of protection. However, what’s worth noting here is that this only applies to warranty claims. If you’re filing a claim due to accidental damage, the deductible will still apply.

Google’s deductibles weren’t all that outrageous in the first place considering the $649 and $849 prices of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but it’s a move that makes sense following the recent extension of the manufacturer’s warranty for all Pixel 2 devices that are sold.

In addition to the two device claims that are now free, Preferred Care also comes with priority access to customer support and expert sessions for learning all the ins and outs for what your Pixel 2 has to offer.

Escape Team

Escape rooms are great fun for a group of friends, but getting a group together can be tricky and booking a room can get expensive.

Escape Team lets you enjoy the fun of solving escape room-style puzzles in the comfort of your own home using pen and paper. You download and print off missions from the Escape Team website and then load up the matching mission in the Android app. The app gives you your countdown clock and delivers a fictional backstory for the missions via audio clips. You can also use the app to request hints if your group gets stuck on a puzzle.

The game is recommended for groups of 2 to 4 people, and requires some outside-the-box thinking and teamwork if you’re to be successful. You get the introduction and first mission for free then you can get the remaining four missions for just $1 — and that’s the only in-app purchase or ad you’ll see. The paid missions are each around a half hour to complete, so for $4, you can get a full afternoon’s worth of good clean fun saving the world.

If you’ve ever tried an escape room or just love solving puzzles, you’re going to fall in love with this game.

Chwazi Finger CHOOSER

Most of the entries on this list are great multiplayer games you and your friends can play using your phone at a party, but Chwazi Finger Chooser is an awesome app to have on your phone for more traditional games. It’s an app that’s designed to quickly and randomly help groups decide who goes first or split into teams.

Simply load up the app, choose the parameters (fingers to chose who goes first, and groups to make teams), and then have each player place one finger on the screen. Once everyone is in, Chwazi takes a moment and then randomly selects one finger to go first or splits everyone into color-coded teams.

It’s a quick and fair way to split up into teams or choose who goes first so you and your friends can spend more time playing and less time bickering about making fair teams. Chwazi can support up to 32 fingers, but good luck fitting that many on your average smartphone (tablets will work better for larger groups).

Jackbox Party Pack

Psych!

Psych is a game of trivia and bluffing where everyone comes up with a fake answer to the question, and then try and guess which is the real answer. You get points for picking the right answer, or if someone picks your answer. It’s very similar to games like Balderdash or Fibbish.

This game requires that all players have the app loaded onto their own phones, along with a solid internet or Wi-Fi connection. There are in-app purchases to unlock new categories, or decks, but there’s enough variety in what’s included for free for an evening’s worth of fun.

Who Can’t Draw?

Get your friends and family to flex their artistic skills (or lack of said skills) and find out Who Can’t Draw. The first artist gets a word and does their best to draw a picture of that word. The phone is then passed around the room, with each person trying to do their best to copy the drawing they were passed… in just 15 seconds. It’s essentially a sketching version of the old schoolyard game of telephone. Once the phone reaches the last person in the game, they must try and guess what the original word.

At the end of each round, you’re shown a results page with everyone’s drawing. It’s hilarious to see how the interpretation changes from person to person, as guessed word and the original word are rarely the same.

Teledoodle

Another social drawing game, Teledoodle is a mobile version of Telestrations that can be played on a single device with up to 8 people. Drawers get up to a minute to create their masterpieces, but it’s ultimately up to the guesser to determine what was drawn. That guess is then passed to another drawer who must interpret what they are given so on and so on until everyone has had a turn. Then, it’s time to see how the drawings and guesses progressed, often with outrageous results.

Charades

Love it or hate it, charades is a classic party game that’s perfect for all ages. The Charades app takes the format and brings it into the 21st century by holding your phone up to your forehead and having your friends and family act out or try to give you clues for the word on the screen. With over 44 categories available in this free-to-play app, there’s a ton of fun to be had.

You might have played this game as Heads Up, which is typically what we would recommend here, but according to reports from the Google Play Store, a recent update has caused the app to become unstable for many users. If you find it working fine for you, it’s another great option.

Ticket To Ride

The award-winning train-based board game is a household favorite around these parts, and it’s also got an outstanding, fully-licensed app for Android. It’s a great little game to play with up to four other friends, featuring pass-and-play for playing on a single device, or local area network options if everyone has the app on their own phone. Setup and play time is short and brisk thanks to all the card dealing and pieces being handled digitally, making a well-designed game even more fun to play.

This is a paid app, with in-app purchases to unlock other game boards. Given the price of the physical version of the game, the combo that includes all expansions and versions is a great deal that increases the game’s replayability tenfold.

Cardcast

If you’ve got a Chromecast, you’ve also got a digital version of Cards Against Humanity to play as a two-screened experience with your TV and phones. It’s an open-sourced game that actually allows you to go in and create your own decks to play with if you so desire, or choose a deck from the deep database of user-created decks. Up to 10 people can play at one time, and players are free to connect or disconnect in the middle of a game.

If you’re not familiar with CAH, it’s notorious for its not-safe-for-work content. However, one of the benefits of Cardcast is that you can find a family-friendly deck to play, so that Granny isn’t offended… unless of course you’ve got a pretty cool Granny.

Big Web Quiz

Another quick and fun game to play on the Chromecast, Big Web Quiz is a fast and fun quiz game with cross-platform compatibility — whether your friends and family are on iOS or Android, everyone is able to download the app and connect to the Chromecast.

Up to six people can connect up and play. Everyone watches the screen for the question, then uses their phone to answer. It’s a fun, colorful app filled with interesting and quirky trivia.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes!

It’s not too often we get to recommend a VR game for a party or social gathering given how isolating a typical VR experience is… but Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is far from your typical VR game. It’s an intense game of bomb defusal that looks to recreate those movie moments where the main character gets defusal instructions over the walkie-talkie.

Available for both the Samsung Gear VR and Google’s Daydream View, one person straps the VR headset on and gets to look and manipulate the bomb, while everyone else in the room consults the bomb manual (downloadable for free from BombManual.com. Can your family or friends work together to defuse the bomb before it goes off? This game is quite stressful at times, but also a lot of fun.

If you’re playing on a Samsung Gear VR, you’ll need to download from the Oculus Store. If you’re playing on a Daydream View with your Pixel phone, you’ll want to download the version from the Google Play Store.
