Deezer sells Stitcher less than two years after purchasing it
Podcast app/directory Stitcher is changing hands again, as this time Deezer is selling it to the E.W. Scripps company. That comes just 591 days after Deezer bought Stitcher in the first place, seeking to pair podcasts with its music library and a few months after the podcast app suffered a prolonged outage. According to Scripps, Stitcher has 8.5 million registered users and is installed on 50 models of cars, however it did not reveal how many of those users are active. Apparently it’s enough to justify a $4.5 million purchase price a Wall Street Journal source described as a small acquihire, and the Stitcher team will join Midroll Media, a podcast producer and advertising network.
If you use the app, nothing will be changing immediately, and Deezer sent an email to podcasts saying their content will continue to be available on its platform too. Since Deezer made its purchase, Google Play Music and Spotify have both dived into podcasts, SoundCloud added paid offline listening and Apple’s iTunes has… not done much except continued to be the largest overall platform. Stitcher says that the new owner should help advertisers and content partners with “an expanded portfolio of opportunities to help you reach the audiences you’re seeking” but we’ll have to wait and find out exactly what that includes.

You can finally post to Instagram from other iOS apps
Ever since Apple introduced app sharing extensions in iOS 8, budding iPhone photographers have been wondering where Instagram’s extension was. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could share a photo from any app, rather than diving into Instagram and choosing from your camera roll? You’re getting that chance today: Instagram has quietly introduced a sharing extension to the latest version of its iOS app. So long as you turn on the extension, any app that supports iOS’ official sharing method can send a photo Instagram’s way. That’s a particularly big deal if you’re fond of third-party imaging apps, which don’t always automatically save pictures to your photo library.
The addition is overdue, to put it mildly. Android users have had this share-from-anywhere luxury for a while, and numerous other photo-focused apps (such as Flickr) have had iOS sharing extensions for a long time. All the same, it’s good to see Instagram fill in a missing piece of the puzzle.

Jump back into Telltale’s ‘The Walking Dead’ this fall
Telltale Games may be hard at work on bringing Batman: A Telltale Games Series to life, but it’s also working on bringing fans more of one of its most popular series yet: The Walking Dead. In a tweet from head of creative communications at Telltale, Job J. Stauffer, Season Three of The Walking Dead was confirmed for fall 2016, along with the release window for the Batman-focused game. It’s been a long time coming for another season of the critically-acclaimed Walking Dead series — since 2014, in fact.
While fans got a taste of what could be with the three-episode miniseries The Walking Dead: Michonne, it just couldn’t quite scratch the same itch that Lee, Clementine and company were able to with the main series.
Here’s to hoping it’ll feel every bit as excellent as the first two seasons, and we’ll see some interesting narrative decisions as the story picks back up proper.
‘BATMAN – The Telltale Series’ will premiere this summer
@TheWalkingDead’s 3rd season will premiere this fall
#E32016 begins in 1 week 😉

Santiago subway will be the first powered mostly by the sun
A subterranean transit system may seem like an unlikely place to find some solar power, but that is exactly how the city of Santiago, Chile hopes to power the trains on its 108-stop, 64-mile Metro system. According to Fast Company, the Santiago Metro will soon be the first in the world to get the majority of its power from renewable resources.
Chile has the advantage of being one of the sunniest places on Earth and the power itself will be generated at a 100-megawatt solar plant on the edge of the Atacama Desert, about 400 miles away from Santiago. Assuming the city hits its goal, by next year the sun will provide 60 percent of the energy needed to move the system’s 2.5 million daily passengers. A nearby wind farm will fill in another 18 percent of the necessary power.
The solar plant is being built by California company SunPower using low-cost modular panels that cut down on setup and maintenance time. One key difference that sets Santiago’s system apart from other cities is a direct connection that will transmit power from the solar facility straight to the subway system instead of tapping into the city’s main power grid. And because desert dust has the potential to gunk up solar panels, SunPower is also using specially designed robots to keep the panels clean and running efficiently. In the United States, SunPower has actually partnered with Ford to provide renewable energy for owners of electric vehicles, but CEO Tom Werner thinks the Santiago plan could be the start of “a widespread trend” for cities with power-hungry transit systems.
Trade off unwanted ‘Rocket League’ gear for hats and profit
Cross-platform play is getting some fresh company with the new additions coming to the soccer-meets-vehicular-mayhem of Rocket League. As part of the game’s next update, the developers at Psyonix say they’re adding “rare” and “very rare” items (hats, paintjobs, etc..) that will augment a particular skill of yours. More than that, if you build up a collection of gear that you’d rather not use any more, have countless duplicates of or have found more powerful/uncommon versions of, soon you’ll be able to trade items in for more prestigious implements.
Maybe best of all is news that trading gear among your friends will be possible too, and the loot might become even more valuable as it’s passed from person to person. Rocket League’s next patch is shaping up to be pretty sizable, and the developers tease that there will be even more info about it coming later this week. Party on, Wayne.

Instagram Updated With Share Sheet Extension for Quicker Sharing
A minor Instagram update released this morning lists only bug fixes in the description, but has quietly added a long overdue feature – a share sheet extension. With the new version of Instagram, it’s possible to use the “share” feature in Photos or another app that supports share extensions to upload content directly to Instagram without needing to open the Instagram app.
When viewing images in Photos, selecting an image and then tapping on “share” now brings up Instagram alongside other sharing options like Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Selecting Instagram will allow users to write a caption before sending the image to Instagram.
As MacStories points out, Instagram’s share extension is limited. Adding a caption to a photo is the only option, with no available photo adjustment tools or options for adding locations and people tags.
Instagram can be added to the share sheet through the Photos app by tapping on share, selecting the “More” button, and choosing to toggle on the Instagram option. Once that’s done, Instagram will always be available in the share sheet of any app with share functionality.
Instagram can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

iOS 10 Concept Features Dark Mode, Split Screen for iPhone
There’s been some speculation that the dark theme of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference website and WWDC app are hinting at a potential dark mode set to be released as part of iOS 10, and a new set of concept images from iHelpBR imagines what a dark mode setting could look like on iOS devices.
A system-wide dark mode is depicted in the images, offering up an example of what darker backgrounds would look like in Messages, Mail, Contacts, News, and more. iHelpBR speculates that such a feature could be set to come on automatically when the sun sets, darkening the entire operating system as is currently done in the Maps app.

The site images a dark mode that would extend to built-in Apple apps and system menus, as well as third-party apps using a potential dark mode API.

iHelpBR’s concept also features split-screen multitasking and picture-in-picture support, bringing the iPad feature to the iPhone when used in landscape mode. It’s not clear if Apple would consider bringing split-screen multitasking to the iPhone given the small amount of screen real estate compared to an iPad, but some users would likely welcome the feature.

OS X has had a dark mode since the 2014 launch of OS X Yosemite, with a darker menu bar, dock, and system menus, and since then, it’s been a highly desired feature for iOS. Despite the darker look of Apple’s WWDC app and WWDC website, there is no concrete evidence a dark mode is coming, but it’s a possibility. A dark mode was also featured in the iOS 10 wish list concept video created by MacStories.
iOS 10 will debut next week alongside OS X 10.12 and new versions of watchOS and tvOS. Apple is expected to show off the new operating systems at the WWDC keynote event, set to take place on June 13 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Following the keynote event, Apple will likely provide beta versions of new software to developers.

Apple Launches New Apple Music Fashion Channel Featuring Content Curated by Alexander Wang
Apple has created a new “Apple Music Fashion” channel available to Apple Music subscribers, which features three new Apple Music playlists curated by fashion designer Alexander Wang, among other curated selections from Vogue, Burberry, and more.
As shared by Vogue, Wang’s playlists, entitled Chill, Hype, and Vibe, feature a mix of R&B slow jams to hardcore rap to “dance-floor ready tracks.” Each playlist includes between 15 and 20 songs.
“Chill is my go-to playlist when I get home, when I need to decompress, or when I’m having a night in,” Wang told Vogue.com of a playlist that includes Rihanna, Drake, and Juicy J. […]
“Hype–those songs are mostly derived from playlists that I’ve played in a party bus or en route to a festival or going out. They are songs that kick up the energy,” he says of a grouping that features Diplo, M.I.A., and Lil Jon. “Vibe is more a playlist that’s in between, with songs that have high energy and also are great classics. It’s good for having people over, drinks; it’s kind of pregame music.” There you’ll find A$AP Rocky, Rich Homie Quan, and Meek Mill.
Wang plans to update the playlists throughout the year with new content so his selections are always up to date. The launch of his playlists are accompanied by a new Apple Music video.
New playlists, compliments of @AlexanderWangNY.
