Valencia CF is the next big soccer club to start an eSports team
At this rate, soccer (aka football) clubs signing eSports teams is quickly becoming an everyday occurrence: Valencia CF has become the first club in Spain’s La Liga to have its own eSports team. It’s not certain just how many games the new outfit will play (Hearthstone and Rocket League are in the mix), but it’s counting Twitch as an official partner. The first virtual match takes place roughly three weeks from now, in Madrid.
Valencia isn’t shy about the reasons behind the move. At the least, the eSports team will give greater visibility to the conventional sports club. However, the organization also sees the potential for big money. ESports are already pulling in hundreds of millions of Euros in Europe, and they’re only expected to grow in the next few years. The move could give Valencia a head start in a competitive gaming world that could easily hit the big time.

What to expect at this year’s E3
Ah, the Electronics Entertainment Expo. It’s Paris Fashion Week for the video game crowd, where practically the entire industry descends onto downtown Los Angeles for a week of media briefings, game announcements, ill-advised open-bar parties and, for folks on the press side of things, an awful lot of walking, talking and writing to bring you the latest news and interviews straight from the convention. Before the show floor opens on Tuesday, Electronic Arts, Bethesda, Microsoft, Ubisoft and Sony each have keynotes scheduled. We’ll be at all of them, starting Sunday with Bethesda and EA and liveblogging Microsoft and Sony on Monday. Here’s what you can expect for the week.
Microsoft

This year is Microsoft’s chance to show what the Xbox One is truly capable of. We’ve already seen the excellent Quantum Break from developer Remedy Entertainment this year, and, indeed, the company has a new focus on original, exclusive games. Case in point: the cel-shaded pirate simulator Sea of Thieves, the robotic mystery of ReCore and a long-awaited return to Halo’s strategy roots with Halo Wars 2. There’s also the chance we could hear more about Inside, from Limbo developer Playdead and maybe, just maybe, Crackdown 3 and the newly leaked and zombie-focused Dead Rising 4 and State of Decay 2. That’s to say nothing of Below from Capybara Games or Tacoma from Fullbright — both of which have been running under the radar in terms of media access.
There are also rumors that Microsoft will have new hardware to show off, including a microconsole that accesses games and apps like Netflix from your Xbox One. Given the work that Microsoft has put into Xbox-to-PC streaming, this doesn’t seem farfetched. Other reports say that Microsoft may unveil two new pieces of hardware, one of which might be a smaller and lower-priced Xbox One with a whopping 2TB of internal memory. Rumors suggest that might launch later this year.
The other theory is that Microsoft has a more powerful Xbox in the works, code-named “Scorpio.” There’s a chance this hardware won’t debut next week or even come out in 2016, but supposedly it’ll pack a stronger GPU and support for Oculus Rift headsets. That way, the PS4 wouldn’t be the only console built with virtual reality in mind.
Sony

Image credit: Patrick T. Fallon/Bloomberg via Getty Images
If the rumors are to be believed, Sony is developing a revamped, higher-spec PlayStation 4, code-named “Neo.” Will it hit stores this year, though? That’s anyone’s guess. Unlike, say, the Xbox 360 Slim that came out five years into the Xbox 360’s life cycle, this sounds different than just a mid-cycle refresh with more-efficient innards in a smaller chassis. It supposedly packs a stronger GPU, a faster processor and is capable of outputting 4K video. Reportedly, games can be patched to take advantage of these new specs to run more smoothly, and by October, every PS4 game will be required to support both systems. Translation: Sony doesn’t want to split its user base between the 40 million existing PS4 owners and those with newer hardware.
Now, that doesn’t mean that the Neo/PS4.5/PS4K will be out by October; it’s just an internal timeline (again, based off rumors) laid out by Sony. And that puts the Neo in a weird spot. Think about it this way: Sony’s been pitching PlayStation VR, a $400 virtual reality headset for the living room, for over two years. The company has remained silent about the Neo since rumors started cropping up earlier this year, but smart money says Sony will finally talk about it at E3 next week.

Image credit: Bloomberg via Getty Images
But when will it come out? If the console is announced next week but doesn’t actually arrive until the fall or maybe next year, sales of the current PS4 would likely grind to a halt, thus giving Microsoft an opportunity to surge ahead. That’s not something Sony wants. With that in mind, it doesn’t seem like a stretch that the newly formed Sony Interactive Entertainment will do as Microsoft did with the Xbox 360 Slim and launch the hardware either during or immediately after E3.
As far as games go, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see more of the titles that debuted at last year’s show but haven’t hit store shelves yet. That includes The Last Guardian, the recently delayed Horizon: Zero Dawn and, of course, PlayStation VR, which ships in October. Maybe we’ll hear about PS VR support for the also-delayed No Man’s Sky or Gran Turismo Sport. And you can’t forget about David Cage’s next game, Detroit: Become Human.
The typically E3-averse Rockstar Games could even make an appearance at Sony’s show: The company recently renewed its trademark for Agent, a game announced but not shown during Sony’s 2009 E3 keynote.
Of course, E3 wouldn’t be E3 without a number of surprises (remember last year’s Shenmue sequel?), which means you should definitely follow along with our liveblog come Monday.
Nintendo

Nintendo is in a weird spot this year. It’s skipping a traditional media briefing in favor of a livestream. The Wii U is in its twilight period and its successor, the still-code-named NX, won’t come out until next March. Meanwhile, the company is adamant that the console won’t make an appearance at E3. Like the other console manufacturers, Nintendo typically has a sizable booth on the show floor with tons of demo kiosks featuring a bevy of playable games. The company says this year will be different because every one of those will be occupied by a fairy boy sporting a green tunic this year.
The perpetually delayed next entry in the Legend of Zelda series is going to be the only playable game in Nintendo’s booth, and it’ll be the Wii U version — not the one planned for the NX.
In fact, Nintendo is dedicating next Tuesday to streaming Zelda footage exclusively, along with commentary from its developers. A few days ago, Nintendo said in a statement that it would also be streaming the new Pokemon games, Sun and Moon, as part of its Treehouse Live broadcasts in addition to Monster Hunter Generations, Dragon Quest VII and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. As has been the case for the past few years, the company is using these streams as a replacement for a traditional E3 press event.
Everyone else
Bethesda

A giant Rubik’s Cube in Fallout 4
Bethesda, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft all have press conferences scheduled for next week, with the first two kicking off the show on Sunday. Last year was Bethesda’s first-ever E3 keynote, and it spent a bulk of the time talking about Fallout 4 and Doom. Both of those are already out, so what could the company have to brag about now? Dishonored 2, for starters. Earlier this year, Bethesda promised we’d see the steampunk sequel’s first gameplay at E3 well ahead of the game’s Nov. 11th release.
There are also whispers of an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim HD port as well. Considering that during Fallout 4’s development process the team ported Skyrim to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, this seems like a no-brainer. Furthermore, now that the company has a framework in place for mod support on Fallout 4 and Doom, a shiny version of Skyrim getting the same treatment is highly likely.
Speaking of Fallout 4, more info on add-on packs for the game is also pretty likely, and maybe we’ll hear more about post-launch missions or multiplayer maps for Doom. Expect to hear more about The Elder Scrolls card game and Legends as well. There are also reports that Bethesda is resurrecting the alien-bounty-hunting sequel Prey 2.
EA

EA is pouring a lot of resources into Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1 and the new FIFA game. We haven’t seen any gameplay of the former whatsoever and only a brief snippet of the new Battlefield. That changes next week, with new details expected at E3. FIFA is a perennial favorite, but, well, it’s soccer and aside from switching from EA’s sports engine to Frostbite (which is used to develop everything else from the company) it’s hard to reinvent the wheel.
You’ll also notice a Mass Effect–size hole here. After the long-awaited sequel Mass Effect: Andromeda debuted during the keynote last year, the game has mostly gone silent. There hasn’t been any gameplay footage released (last year’s trailer was just CGI) since, and its “fall 2017” release window has been pushed to early next year. Key talent has left developer BioWare following last E3 as well. My crystal ball is cloudy here, but there’s the slightest of chances we’ll learn more next week.
Ubisoft

There won’t be a new Assassin’s Creed title this year.
Don’t expect to finally see Beyond Good and Evil 2 from Ubisoft at E3: It’ll only lead to heartbreak when the “one more thing” from the company’s press conference is another Tom Clancy-branded shooter. Speaking of which, there should be a whole lot more info and gameplay coming out for the open-world Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, in addition to Watch Dogs 2 making a guaranteed appearance. It’s safe to say that we’ll see more of the period-piece brawler For Honor and the superhero-centric South Park role-playing game The Fractured but Whole as well, considering both debuted last year. A Ubisoft press conference wouldn’t be the same without Assassin’s Creed making an appearance, but with the series taking a much-need break this year, we’ll probably get a new trailer for the upcoming movie starring Michael Fassbender instead.
Google’s Project Fi gets more coverage through US Cellular
Ever since Google launched Project Fi, you’ve had to hop between just two networks: Sprint and T-Mobile. But what if you’re in an area where one or neither is particularly great? You might have an easier time of things after today. US Cellular has signed up as Project Fi’s third partner, giving you both better overall coverage and a greater chance of staying on speedy LTE data. You should see it reach your phone sometime in the “coming weeks.” It’s probably not the additional network you were hoping for (AT&T or Verizon, anyone?), but it could mean the difference between a rock-solid connection and having to wait for WiFi.

Dato Duo is a simplified synthesizer for kids of all ages
Simple synthesizers are great for kids who are interested in music, and a pair of Dutch designers have built another instrument that does just that. The Dato Duo is two-panel synth features an 8-step sequencer on one side with the sound controls and effects on the other. It seems a bit odd at first, but the idea is to have one person control each to enhance the collaborative efforts. There’s also no wrong way to use the device, so even the youngest noise makers can get started with ease. And it doesn’t hurt that the Duo sounds pretty good either.
In terms of tweaking the sound, the Duo has two oscillators, a simple envelope generator, filter and two additional effects. For the older kids (read: adults), there’s MIDI in/out as well as sync in/out which means you can use the gadget alongside a Korg Volca, Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators, Boss guitar effects pedals and more. The Dato Duo will set you back €299 (around $334), unless you’re quick enough to cash in on the early bird discount. If you do decide to commit funds, the instrument isn’t expected to ship until April of next year.

Apple’s ‘Doom and Gloom’ Sentiment Reaches ‘Extreme Levels,’ but iPhone Sales Should Hit Bottom This Quarter
Apple analyst Brian White of Wall Street brokerage firm Drexel Hamilton has issued a research note to investors in which he estimates that Apple will reach a bottom in iPhone sales, and overall revenue and profit, in the third quarter of the 2016 fiscal year, a three-month period that ends in late June.
White claimed that all of Apple’s supply chain partners that his firm tracks reported May sales that were “softer than historical averages” due to the slowdown, but he forecasted that the much-rumored iPhone 7 series will help Apple’s smartphone business return to growth by the second quarter of fiscal 2017.
Until then, the bleeding isn’t over. The firm estimated Apple will sell 38.5 million iPhones in the June quarter, down from 47.5 million in the year-ago quarter, followed by an estimated 41 million and 72.3 million sales in the September and December quarters respectively, both of which would also mark year-over-year declines.
White predicted that iPhone sales will then rebound to an estimated 56 million, 45.4 million, and 47.3 million in the subsequent three quarters, signaling a return to modest year-over-year growth throughout 2017. iPhone sales are estimated to reach 76.3 million by the first quarter of fiscal 2018, which would be a record breaker.
It was initially reported that Apple suppliers projected weak demand for the iPhone 7 series due to a “lack of innovation,” with other market conditions to blame, but a subsequent report said Apple has asked suppliers prepare for the highest iPhone production target in “about two years.”
Apple also reportedly increased iPhone SE orders last month due to strong sales, and the lower-priced 4-inch smartphone should help boost overall iPhone sales.
Mac sales are also expected to bottom out, but not until the second quarter of the 2017 fiscal year, when sales drop to an estimated 3.7 million compared to 4 million in the year-ago quarter. Mac sales are then estimated to reach 3.9 million, 4.4 million, and 4.44 million in the subsequent three quarters.
Given the current “gloom and doom” sentiment surrounding Apple reaching “extreme levels” this year, Drexel Hamilton believes the company’s stock represents an “exceptional value.” AAPL is currently trading in around the $98 to $100 range, while the firm has set a “buy” status with a price target of $185.
In April, Apple reported its first year-over-year decline in iPhone sales and quarterly revenue since 2003, and its third quarter guidance of between $41 billion and $43 billion in revenue, which would be up to 18 percent lower than the year-ago quarter, suggests that trend will continue through the first half of 2016.
Brian White is a longtime but somewhat infamous Apple analyst that currently serves as Global Head of Technology Hardware and Software at institutional brokerage firm Drexel Hamilton. He previously worked at investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald, where he held the same title, and Topeka Capital Markets.

Hands-On With Feld & Volk’s Custom $5000+ Carbon Fiber Apple Watch
Luxury device manufacturer Feld & Volk is known for ripping the internals out of iPhones and building new enclosures for them from a range of high-quality materials, and now the company is doing the same thing with the Apple Watch.
Feld & Volk extracted the components of the Apple Watch and built a unique carbon fiber Apple Watch body from the ground up, for a line of Apple Watches unlike anything Apple is able to offer. Ahead of the launch of its new carbon fiber Apple Watch, Feld & Volk invited us to take a closer look at the device, so MacRumors videographer Matt did a hands-on video to show off its construction and build quality.
As can be seen in the video, the carbon fiber enclosure of the Apple Watch has been built with precision, incorporating a custom carbon fiber side button in addition to leaving the heart rate sensor and Digital Crown functional and accessible. The cutouts for the microphone and speaker have also been added to the body, so this works just like a regular Apple Watch.
Because it’s a custom designed body, Feld & Volk’s carbon fiber Apple Watch is not compatible with standard Apple Watch bands. Instead, it is designed to work with traditional watch bands, so it still offers a wide range of band options. A rubber band with a matching clasp customizable with initials will ship with each carbon fiber Apple Watch, and an additional band of alligator leather, textile, or resin will also be included, varying by model.
Feld & Volk plans to officially launch its carbon fiber Apple Watch in the near future, but disassembling the Apple Watch and putting it into a new body doesn’t come cheap — these watches will retail for upwards of $5,000. Along with the carbon fiber Apple Watch shown off in the video, Feld & Volk also plans to release custom enclosures made from brass/carbon and wood, with each new custom Apple Watch available in 38 and 42mm size options.

The Feld & Volk watches will be available later this month at French luxury boutique Collette and from the Feld & Volk website.
Note: Feld & Volk loaned a carbon fiber Apple Watch to MacRumors free of charge for the purposes of this video. No other compensation was received and the watch was returned at the conclusion of filming.

Get notified when the Amazon Echo goes on sale – CNET

Amazon
Been eyeballing an Echo? Amazon’s voice-activated speaker continues to gain features and earn fans, with newer models like the Echo Dot and Echo Tap aiming to expand the platform’s reach.
However, Amazon stubbornly continues to price the Echo at $179.99, which puts it out of reach for many a gadget lover. The device has gone on sale exactly twice since its debut last year: once in November and again in April.
So how can make sure you don’t miss the next price drop? What you need is a notification system, a way to get a quick heads-up the moment Amazon puts the Echo on sale. Look no further than CamelCamelCamel.
Never mind the mysterious, unwieldy name; the service lets you track any product Amazon sells and receive notifications when the price changes. In fact, let me save you a step and direct you right to the Echo page.
As you can see, CamelCamelCamel (which I’m going to refer to as C3 from here on out) shows you a complete price history, including the aforementioned pair of sale dates and prices ($149 and $153.71, if you’re wondering).

Use CamelCamelCamel to notify you when there’s an Echo price drop — no matter how small.
Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET
To create an alert, just click in the Desired Price field and choose the minimum discount amount that should trigger a notification. My advice: go for the $0.01 option, because then you’ll find out when there’s any drop at all. If you specify, say, 10 percent, and the price cut is only 9.5 percent, you won’t get an alert.
Then, specify how you want to receive alerts — email and/or Twitter, which will require you to manually enter your info if you haven’t signed up for a free C3 account — and then click Start Tracking. And that’s it!
Needless to say, you can use C3 for products other than the Echo. And the service offers Chrome, Firefox and Safari extensions — known as the Camelizer — that let you set up alerts right from the Amazon product page you’re viewing. (Microsoft Edge users can install the Camelizer bookmarklet instead.)
Given that the last Echo sale happened in April, my semi-educated guess is the next one will happen next month — quite possibly coinciding with the rumored repeat of last year’s Prime Day. Who wants to start the wagering?
The best Edge extensions – CNET

When Microsoft debuted its sexy, speedy new browser — Edge — last July, user response was…underwhelming.
Edge was perhaps too minimalist in its approach to web browsing: It offered a couple of cool new features (such as inking), but it lacked most of the features, such as browser extensions, that made people turn from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox in the first place.
Microsoft is hoping to fix this problem in the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is when Edge will finally get support for browser extensions. In anticipation of this update, we took a look at the best — or rather, the entire list of — browser extensions that are currently available for Edge. While these extensions are not available for regular Windows 10 users yet, Windows 10 Insiders running Insider Preview Build 14291 or higher can check them out right now.
AdBlock and Adblock Plus
AdBlock and Adblock Plus are actually two completely separate ad-blocking extensions with extremely similar functionality (and names). Both of these extensions, once installed, will block the majority of ads (you’ll still be able to whitelist domains in the extensions’ settings) on websites you visit in Edge. Because AdBlock and Adblock Plus are basically the same extension, running both of them at the same time will not have any benefits and will only bog down the browser.
Page Analyzer
The Page Analyzer extension is mainly for web developers — it scans and analyzes open webpages in Edge for performance issues, common errors, and opportunities for optimization.
Save to Pocket
Save to Pocket is an extension for users of the popular read-it-later app Pocket. This extension adds a Pocket button to your browser; hit the button when you’re on a webpage you want to read later, and it will be automatically saved to Pocket and synced across your other devices for offline reading.
Microsoft Translator
The Microsoft Translator extension makes browsing foreign-language websites a bit easier. When you have this extension turned on, you’ll see a translation icon in the address bar of foreign-language websites — just hit the icon and Microsoft will instantly translate the site into your current Windows language. Microsoft Translator supports over 50 languages.
Reddit Enhancement Suite
The Reddit Enhancement Suite extension adds extra functionality to Reddit. Most of these tweaks are small but mighty for Reddit users — an easy account switcher, better comment navigation, and a never-ending Reddit stream from the homepage.
Mouse Gestures
The Mouse Gestures extension turns on mouse gestures in Edge. To use mouse gestures, click and hold the right mouse button down anywhere inside the browser and then drag your mouse into a gesture. For example, making a gesture that goes to the right and then up will open a new tab, while making a straight-line gesture to the left will take you back a page.
OneNote Web Clipper
The OneNote Web Clipper extension adds a button that you can click to capture all or part of a webpage to save to OneNote. The Web Clipper will either capture the entire page, let you take a screenshot of one part of the page, or capture the page in “Article” format, which grabs just the text on the page. You can save all of these clips to the OneNote notebook of your choice, so it’s handy if you’re trying to compile a notebook of information.
Pin It Button
The PinterestPin It Button extension is similar to the OneNote Web Clipper, except for Pinterest. This extension adds a Pin It button to Edge. By default, this button appears next to your other extensions at the top of the … menu, but you can change its settings so the button appears next to the address bar for easier access. The Pin It button lets you pin anything on the page — such as photos — to the Pinterest board of your choice.
WHOOSH! It’s time to disinfect your staph and E. Coli infested gadgets (review)

We wash our hands. We brush our teeth. We put on clean underwear everyday. At least I hope most of us do these activities, because hygiene is vital in maintaining good health.
When you’re sick and need to visit a hospital, would you want to see a doctor who never washed his/her hands before they examined you? Or would you want your chef and waiter to use dirty hands while they handle your food? The answer is an obvious NO. There are laws that require hygiene standards to be met in situations like these, but its almost universal that no one really cleans their phones or other mobile devices.
When was the last time you cleaned your smartphone? When I say, “clean” I don’t mean simply wipe it off on your pants or shirt. I mean, when did you use a cleaning spray to remove the germs and microbes on it? Or when was the last time you cleaned your keyboard, portable speaker, mouse, or tablet? If the answer is never, you need to read on.

Let’s look at the facts
It’s time to list facts about the germs on your smartphone.
- 18% of phones are contaminated with staphylococcus (source: Journal of Applied Microbiology)
- 100% of phones are contaminated with with either single or mixed bacterial agents (source: NCBI)
- 16% of mobile phones are contaminated with fecal flora and E. Coli (source: Yahoo)
- 10X how many times your mobile phone is dirtier than a toilet seat (source: BBC)
- 30% of virus can be transferred from your mobile phone to your fingers (source:mashable)
What is Staph and E.Coli?
Staphylococcus: A group of bacteria that cause a multitude of diseases. Under a microscope, staphylococcus bacteria are round and bunched together. They can cause illness directly by infection or indirectly through products they make, such as the toxins responsible for food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome. The best-known member of the staphylococcus family is Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci are the main culprits in hospital-acquired infections, and they cause thousands of deaths every year. Also known as staph. – medicine.net
Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria normally live in the intestines of people and animals. Most E. coli are harmless and actually are an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract. However, some E. coli are pathogenic, meaning they can cause illness, either diarrhea or illness outside of the intestinal tract. The types of E. coli that can cause diarrhea can be transmitted through contaminated water or food, or through contact with animals or persons. – cdc.gov
Sure, anyone can pull out random facts from studies, right? Well go look up how dirty smartphones are at Google Scholar and look at how many scientists are actually doing scientific studies on that topic alone. (If you don’t believe me)
You can do the same search I did:
Goto Google Scholar to search scientific publications
Search “phones contaminated with staph”
Refine your search to 2016
You will find 463 studies and the vast majority of them all found smartphones to be extremely dirty.
Clean your smartphone and other devices with WHOOSH!
The facts speak for themselves.
Think about it. When was the last time you cleaned your smartphone?
I clean my smartphones a few times a week, and my latest favorite cleaner is WHOOSH! I like it because it is cheap at $7 for a 0.3 ounce bottle, and it comes with an ultra-soft anti-microbial cloth. I get about 30 uses from a one bottle, which means each clean costs just 23 cents. That is a cheap price to pay to remove E. Coli and Staph.

WHOOSH! is non-toxic, and ammonia and alcohol free. This is important to me because I have pets that I adore, and will not risk having poisons in my home. Also alcohol can strip off the manufacturers oleophobic coating that resists fingerprints.

It doesn’t get much simpler than WHOOSH! Simply spray your dirty displays with WHOOSH! and then wipe down with the included cloth. My iPad Pro 12″ needed a couple of sprays but was cleaned within seconds. What’s nice about WHOOSH is that it also leaves a nano coating that helps my displays resist microbes.
Conclusion
I am a Medicinal Chemist first and a writer second. The facts are real and supported by actual scientific publications. Smartphones really are nasty. Hospitals are requiring their staff to ensure their phones are cleaned, and some are banning them from the work floor altogether to help prevent serious outbreaks.
At just $7 a bottle, WHOOSH! is an investment that must be made especially if you work in environments that needed good hygiene.
