Samsung needs to make radical changes to revitalize its Galaxy lineup
Samsung still dominates the Android smartphone market with its Galaxy S series and Note line. But the once powerhouse has been slipping and has changed upper management a couple of times in order to revive its mobile lineup. Last year brought on a revolutionary change for Samsung where they sacrificed expandable memory and a replaceable battery for an all metal and glass build. While that pleased many, it also angered fans like me who prefers functionality over high quality materials. And since then, Samsung changes its upper management again signaling a failure in last year’s lineup.
16GB of memory isn’t enough for most when 5-7GB of that “16GB” is already being used before you turn your phone on. Paying another $100 for an additional 16GB memory is a joke when you can buy a 32GB card from Amazon for $10. Many people still use their Galaxy Note 3, Note 4, S3 and S4, and having a replaceable battery is vital to maintaining power throughout the day. Batteries for those phones are $10 or less and if you have taken care of your phone, the only item you would need to replace is the battery as they have a maximum amount of recharge cycles.
Samsung claims to have “cut back” on the level of modifications to Android with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note5. This simply was not true. All of those modifications require more power, faster processors and more RAM. Those additional TouchWiz features also cause long term stability issues and slow Samsung from releasing major software updates like Android M. No one knows when they’re really going to get Android M especially when you add on carrier customizations and added level of updates. TouchWiz is still in full effect on current Galaxy phones, but Samsung got slightly better about hiding them.
What Samsung needs to do in order to regain and also add new customers
LG and Huawei are looking to kick Samsung’s butt this year. So is Apple with a complete redesign in its iPhone 7. Samsung needs to go beyond the build materials this time around and actually give users value, updates, affordable accessories, and top level customer service.
Get rid of TouchWiz and stop letting carriers add bloat
Kill TouchWiz. Don’t mess with us anymore and tell us you scaled it back. Just kill it and start over. Follow Motorola’s lead and just give select useful features. No one uses 95% of the junk you install on the phones especially when they are duplicates of Google Play apps. S-Voice, Galaxy App Store, annoying sounds, ugly looks all need to go bye-bye. The investment on wasted duplication software can’t be spent better else where. It’s not only a waste of money, but it is a waste of performance and space.
Keep it simple. All of those TouchWiz additions help contribute to memory issues, overheating, lag, and poor performance. When we pay for 3 or 4GB of RAM, and the fastest Exynos processor according to benchmarks, we expect it to be fast. We don’t want that extra money to be spent on compensating for the terrible software Samsung overlays onto Android. Both the Nexus 6P and 5X outperform Galaxy devices because the software is unadulterated and both devices have far inferior internals.
Samsung also needs to stop letting carriers add in their bloatware. On AT&T, Samsung lets AT&T install over 25 apps that can be disabled, but not deleted, and it wastes over 1.5GB of memory. And to make matters worse, AT&T has to update Samsung’s update to, Google’s update which means the flagships from Samsung regularly take six to twelve months just to get a major update.
Give us our value back in our hardware
Samsung charges the most of all Android manufacturers for its devices, and has set the standard for $650-800 smartphones, but are regularly cutting back on features. Samsung needs to bring back replaceable batteries. And Samsung also needs to bring back microSD card slots, especially when the base model Galaxy S6 only has 16GB of memory. Sure the Nexus 5X has a fixed amount of memory, but it only costs $350 versus $650 of the S6 edge. And the Nexus 5X isn’t the flagship, instead it is a mid-range smartphone.
Samsung also needs to put wireless chargers and headphones “in the box” to give more value. Headphones are vital to most people and it shouldn’t have to be an additional cost when they used to be provided for free. Only Apple truly sticks to giving its customers headphones. Wireless charging technology is here, especially with Samsung devices, and it is time they start coming free in the box too. Flagship prices deserve flagship accessories. The Nexus 6P handily beat the Note5 and S6 in reviews this year, but costs over $200 less which means they have money in the mark-up to give us more. The Nexus 6P even came with USB Type-C which is better than micro USB in every way.
Set up hardware repair centers
Without a doubt, Apple kicks every other manufacturer’s bum when it comes to customer service. Apple retail stores are more than just sales centers. Educational and tutorial classes are offered, and a repair center is there in the store to fix broken screens and bad batteries. It’s one of the main reasons why Apple keeps its customers happy, because they don’t have to be without a phone and can have it fixed within minutes.
Samsung already has stores within Best Buy stores so all it needs to do is invest a little more into taking care of its customers. I have heard way too times why people switched from their Samsung device to an iPhone because there were too many problems that they didn’t know how to fix. As an Android enthusiast, I know if these people had access to experts like Apple offers, their problems could be fixed in minutes too. And that would bring customers back.
Mentality Shift
If Samsung can switch its mentality to, “what can I give to the customer” instead of “what can I take”, all of these changes will come naturally. Arguably, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was its best Samsung phone ever. Since then most of its phones have been great, but they are loaded with issues. Galaxies run well for about a year and then after that you need to upgrade your device. The S3 on the other hand lasted well over two years for many, and that quality stemmed from a mentality of trying to give the customers what they want versus how much profit can be made.
Android enthusiasts are smart enough to see past the all glass and metal build, and want Samsung to go beyond and think harder. Kill Touchwiz and reinvent the overlay on Android. Give headphones, wireless chargers, replaceable batteries and expandable memory. When the Galaxy phones cost so much that you can only afford to replace them once every two years, those types of things matter. And spend a little more to improve customer service which is a must have in today’s day and age.

Talk Android Apps of the Week: January 24, 2016
It’s Sunday, the time of the week when Talk Android brings you a report on some of the very best applications we’ve been using over the course of the past seven days. Today we’re focusing our attention on a fantastic payment service, a reliable sugar intake tracker, a third-party Android Wear store and last, but not least, an incredibly addictive game.
Payfriendz
The first application up this week is a great new payment service that equips you to transfer funds to family and friends effortlessly. Payfriendz is completely free to use, has a WhatsApp-like feel and enables you to send instant messages to ensure that your transaction goes smoothly.
Whilst it’s doubtful you’ll be giving up your PayPal account in favour of Payfriendz any time soon, the platform does pack some nifty little features that make it significantly more enjoyable to use, like, for example, group chats for mass-payments, which is pretty useful if you’re paying one of your family or friends for an outing they’re organizing. The app also utilizes military-grade security — so you can rest assured that your loot is in safe hands.
Requesting money on the platform couldn’t be easier. Simply send a message to your friend or family member using their username and input the amount. When the funds are sent, they’re instantly transferred to your account. You can then withdraw the money directly to your bank account or spend it online using a virtual prepaid MasterCard.

Change4Life Sugar Smart
It’s a well-known fact that too much sugar is bad for us, but with almost everything we eat and drink containing the substance, it’s very difficult to keep a record of how much we’re actually consuming on a daily basis. Change4Life hopes to put an end to all that with Sugar Smart.
The application features an extremely straightforward interface, which calculates your intake of sugar every time you put something in your mouth. Simply scan the barcode of the food you’re about to eat/drink, and Sugar Smart will give you the details of its sugar content, subtract it from your daily allowance and tell you what you’ll have left once you ingested it.
Unfortunately, the selection of foods is fairly limited. At present, only 7,500 products are currently in the database, which means that at some point you’ll scan something that won’t register. However, with new items being added continuously, it won’t be too much longer until this issue is resolved.
Wear Store
The next application we’re focusing our attention on is a must-have for all Android Wear smartwatch owners. Wear Store is a neat-looking, third-party database containing all of the 40,000 apps compatible with the timepiece operating system.
Sporting a design much like the Play Store, each entry comprises of a description, rating and screenshots — so you can find out all about the app prior to installation. If it looks like something you’re after, simply hit the Play button, and it will start to download.
Applications are arranged in different categories, which makes it super-easy to locate specific services. For instance, if you’re looking for a tool to track your workouts, just head into the Health & Fitness section where you will be presented with over 170 great apps to choose from.
Floors
Up last this week, we’re looking an addictive endless arcade game called Floors. All you have to do is tap on the centre of your smartphone or tablet’s display in order to make your character jump and clear the spikes in his path. If you do happen to come into contact with a spike, your player will be sliced in half, and you’ll have to start again. Progress is recorded based on the score you obtain — so the longer you go without being impaled, the more points you’ll be credited with.

Samsung is opening a VR studio in New York City

The library of things you can play and watch on a Gear VR headset is growing, but Samsung doesn’t think it’s growing quickly enough — it wants to help make some of that content, too. The company has revealed to Sundance Film Festival guests that it’s opening a New York City studio that will create virtual reality experiences. Samsung isn’t saying much about the content in question, but the studio will be located inside an existing Samsung office rather than a wholly separate space. Don’t expect a sprawling movie set, then.
The tech giant also did more at Sundance than showcase VR material. It struck up a one-year partnership with the Sundance Institute to foster movie makers and other creatives. Ideally, VR will play an even bigger role at the 2017 festival — it’ll be more of a central attraction and less of a sideshow to conventional movies.

Here are your headlines for this week:
- The Google Play Store is once again giving folks rentals for up to 75% off. With this, you can rent a single movie for up to 75% off so if there’s a title you’ve always wanted to watch, this is a great way to do it. This is likely to promote the video streaming side of the Play Store and you can take advantage of this rental until March 31st.
- WhatsApp has had an interesting week. First, it was announced that WhatsApp will be dropping their yearly subscription charge. Now, it has been revealed that WhatsApp will begin sharing details about its users with Facebook in order to, and I quote, “improve Facebook experiences”. We suppose it was only a matter of time before this happened and you’ll have a whole new terms of service to read as well.
- A while back, renowned indie developer Chris Lacy sold Link Bubble and Tap Path to an unknown entity that would be revealed later. Later is right now. The company is called Brave Software and Lacy’s apps are being used as framework for a browser that will pay you for the advertising you see. The idea is to get rid of large, annoying ads and replace them with ads that don’t compromise the experience, but also doesn’t screw over publishers like ad block does. We’ll see how that turns out.
- Roadhouse Interactive, developers of the popular Warhammer 40,000: Carnage game, has announced that they’re working on an Iron Maiden game. This isn’t the first time a musician or artist has used a mobile game to promote their work, with artists like Avenged Sevenfold and iamyank doing similar titles to promote their work. It’ll be out this summer and it should be interesting.
- The latest Humble Bundle is now live! After announcing that the mobile exclusive ones would be discontinued, a new Humble Bundle materialized out of nowhere and we couldn’t be happier. This one has a few Pac-Man games, Puzzle Quest 2, Flight Control, and a few other games. You get three games for a buck and every game in the bundle if you pay more than $5.

Apple and Google surprise Daimler with their progress on cars

You’d think that the head of Daimler would have little to worry about from Silicon Valley right now given his company’s technological progress, but there is apparently a good reason to be nervous. CEO Dieter Zetsche tells Welt am Sonntag that a visit to tech companies in the Valley left Daimler convinced that Apple and Google “can do more and know more” about cars than previously thought. That’s no mean feat when Google’s self-driving car efforts are still rough around the edges, and Apple hasn’t even acknowledged its plans — what do you know that we don’t, Dieter? He’s glad that the companies have “more respect” for Daimler’s work than he suspected, but something tells us that Mercedes-Benz will be stepping up its game regardless.
This wasn’t just a whistle stop tour, though. Zetsche added that he and a managerial team met 70 Silicon Valley companies during their trip, and there were “concrete talks” with at least some of those firms. In other words, it won’t be shocking if the folks in Stuttgart forge a few tech-driven partnerships in the near future.

Google Play Games to lose Google+ requirement in 2016
This may be the year that some significant changes are made to Google’s Play Games service.
Google wants to eliminate permission requirements that are unnecessary and reduce the amount of times users have to sign into apps. To fix the issue, Google is thinking about moving the Games API’s to a new model. However, they’re skeptical because of the issues that could arise for developers. Hopefully this is nothing too major. Here are some of the changes taking place:
The most significant change users may realize is that Play Games will no longer require the need of a Google+ profile. The two services will no longer be connected, meaning that Play Games will provide you a name that is completely unrelated to the name on your Google+ profile. This has been complained about for quite some time and it’s great to see that Google has finally noticed it. Users may also notice that the amount of times they’re required to log-in is significantly lower. Users will only have to sign-in to the service once. Best of all, it will be done automatically when going into a new game for the first time, unless you have more than one Google account tied to your phone/tablet.
The changes will me made sometime in 2016.

HTC Desire T7 shows up on GFXBench
Up until now, HTC’s Desire series has been composed of only smartphones. Based on a recent benchmark test, this may all change. The Desire T7 is a 6.9-inch tablet with model number IV5001-A. The listing also revealed some of the handset’s hardware specifications.
The HTC Desire T7’s 6.9-inch display has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Powering the handset is a Spreadtrum SC8830 processor containing a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.3GHz. 1GB of RAM is underneath the surface.
The back side of the Desire T7 houses a 5MP camera. The same goes for the front-facing camera. The handset has 16GB of onboard storage space but may include higher capacity models at launch.
The Desire T7 could release as soon as MWC 2016, which is scheduled to start on February 22. This should be HTC’s biggest showcase at the show now that the One M10 smartphone isn’t expected to make it. A good looking affordable tablet may be exactly what HTC needs in its lineup of products, especially considering that the Nexus 9 is well over a year old. Sources say that Desire T7 will hit only emerging markets, leaving the United States and others left behind. We’ll keep you covered on all the news, rumors and leaks leading up to the official announcement. For a better look at the device’s benchmark listing, head on over to the source link.

The After Math: Up, up and away

We’ve seen a number of historic announcements regarding the future of autonomous flight this week. Amazon promised 30-minute deliveries via its fleet of flying horses. DHL tried its best to demonstrate its delivery drone (but was itself bested by the weather). The University of Oslo set a world record by picking up boulders with a team of drones. And Arizona’s building an exo-atmospheric balloon port because people are clearly willing to travel into space if it means getting out of that state.

Inside AA HQ
We’re trying something fresh with our reviews, starting with our impressions of the Huawei Mate 8. Basically, we’re splitting the task in two, with one person handling the video and another the written post. Of course, the two reviewers discuss and coordinate their reporting, but the idea is to give you more than just one perspective – and more depth – on the devices we’re evaluating. Quality reviews require a ton of time, so having two reviewers should allow us to produce in-depth, top-notch reviews faster than ever. We realize not everyone will enjoy this format, and things are far from set in stone. We just want to give you the best product we can, so one way or another, expect a deeper focus on reviews in 2016.

Latest images may be LG G5 under cover
Some new, leaked images have surfaced on the Internet claiming to be the forthcoming LG G5 housed in a dummy cover to help conceal the overall look as well as details of the device. The presence of a dummy cover means no identifying marks are visible to help verify whether the device is even from LG. The details that are visible appear to be consistent with previous information we have learned about LG’s new flagship smartphone.
The biggest clue to the device in the images being the LG G5 are the details from the back of the device. They show a dual camera setup with flash and focusing system components in between the lenses. Located immediately below that is what appears to be a round button thought to be a fingerprint scanner. All of this is consistent with renders generated after an individual was able to view an actual prototype from LG.
The other pictures of this mystery device focus on the edges. One shows a microSD card slot accessed on one side while a shot of the bottom shows a USB-C connector and a speaker opening. In one big change for LG, one image shows the volume rocker being located to the side of the device instead of being located in the middle of the back.
LG is expected to reveal the LG G5 in February, likely at MWC 2016.
