Apple Planning to Open Third Retail Store in Turkey in 2016
Apple is preparing to open a third retail store in Turkey, reports MacReports, citing a source familiar with the company’s plans. Set to open in Istanbul, the store will launch later in 2016.
Apple is said to be in the process of hiring for retail positions at the store and has posted advertisements on job sites in Turkey. The store will reportedly be located at the Emaar Square Mall in Istanbul. Still under constriction, the Emaar Square Mall will feature 491 stores and restaurants, a hotel, and apartment space for residents.

When it launches, the Emaar Square Apple Store will be the third Apple retail location in Istanbul, joining retail stores at Zorlu Mall and Akasya Mall, both of which opened in 2014. Turkey’s Zorlu store opened with quite a fanfare as it featured a unique design with an all glass exterior.

Verizon extends its military discount to cover all plans

Verizon has has a discount program in place for current and former military members for a while now. However, there was a minimum plan requirement that prohibited many veterans and soldiers from taking advantage of the discount. Today the nation’s largest wireless carrier announced that they would be extending the terms of the military discount to cover all of their plans. This means that, according to their calculations, over 100,000 eligible accounts will now be extended this benefit.
The military discount includes 15% off monthly Verizon service as well as a 25% discount off select accessories in Verizon’s online and brick-and-mortar stores. All you need to get verified for the benefit is a military issued email or paystub if you’re an active service member or, if you’re a former service member, your DD Form 214 Veteran’s ID Card. Veterans can also use their Military Retiree Account Statement or their VetRewards card from Veterans Advantage to apply.

If you qualify for this discount program, head over to Verizon’s official landing page for military members. There are also options for employment and a handful of other benefits that you may be able to take advantage of. If you know a Verizon subscriber who is former or current military, be sure to share this program with with them!

First up is the Moto 360 (2nd Gen.), Motorola’s latest Android Wear-powered smartwatch. When you buy the Moto 360 with a metal band, you’ll get a free leather band with your purchase. The discount will appear after you add both of the items to your cart. Extra leather bands usually cost about $40, so this is a pretty good deal. Also, when you order a Motorola Moto G (2015), you’ll get two additional shells for free. Extra shells normally cost $14.99 a piece.
This last discount is for the more fashion-forward folks out there. Back in November Motorola introduced Special Edition versions of the Moto X Pure Edition that were designed by Jonathan Adler. Over the holidays they were priced at a $25 premium, though, so you’d need to pay about $475 for a Special Edition 32GB Moto X Pure Edition. Now, until this deal is over, you can get these Special Edition smartphones for $75 off the original price, which is actually a very nice deal. For $399.99, you’ll get a Moto X Pure Edition with 32GB of storage and the choice between three Jonathan Adler-designed stylish back plates.
All three of these discounts end on the 16th at 10:59 a.m. CST, so don’t delay!

First off is the Priv Leather Smart Flip Case in black. This fashionable and protective case is made of genuine Nappa leather, and it fully encases the device front and back with a viewing window for notifications. It opens like a checkbook, and if you’re worried about having that flap awkwardly hanging open while you’re on the phone, fear not: the designers took that into consideration, so you can keep chatting away even with the case closed. The Priv Leather Smart Flip Case would normally cost you $59.99, but you’re getting it for the low, low price of free.
What’s more is that you’ll be getting a Priv Sync Pod. This is a sleek and minimalist dock that displays the smartphone at an upright angle while it’s charging or transferring data. Great for bedside tables or office desks. Normally the Sync Pod would run you $39.99, but if you take advantage of this offer, you won’t be paying a cent.

Custom power off menu on root devices with Xposed – Android customization

Continuing forward with our root projects on our Android customization series, let’s take a quick look at a simple little tweak today. Last week we took control of battery life, this week we will use an Xposed module to control the power menu. Most of us do not need extra ways to power off our phones, but those that do, this is or you.
As mentioned, we installed both Amplify and Greenify last week, each serve a different role, but both look to improve battery life on your Android device. Continuing with Xposed modules on our rooted Android tablet, we want to use a tool called Power Menu, I bet you can’t guess what it does.
Before we begin
Is it safe to assume that you’ve been following along this string of customization projects, that you considering the pros and cons of rooting, went ahead and rooted your device and flashed at least the Xposed Framework to your device? Have you then installed the Xposed installer and have been playing with modules on your Android device? Oh good, today will be easy then.
If you have not gone through the above, no worries, here are the important parts:
Rooting your phone? A few things to consider
Xposed Module and Installer basics
Custom shutdown menu on your Android device
Do you recall back in the day when the shutdown dialogue on your Android device included a few options – maybe it had the option to Shutdown, Restart or more. In the later years of Android, most of this has been removed. Actually, most stock Android devices today have but one option, Power Off.

As most experienced root users know, there is so much more to be done than just power off a device, and a reboot or power up can go one of a few ways. As you’ll see moving forward, we’re going to add a few reboot options to the list for you using the module called Power Menu.
There is not much for tutorial here today, head into the Xposed Installer app and look for Power Menu. It may be hiding under the name Material Power Menu, as it prides itself on being Material Design. Download it, install it, reboot your device to activate and off we go.
For this specific software, we recommend using the built-in tool in the settings to add a shortcut to your Homescreen, you’ll see shy in a bit. Otherwise, there is little need to make any major changes to the settings of the app.

As you can see, when you run the app, it provides a simple power menu for your device. Tap any of the options to follow through. You’ll notice that you really have just two options, power off and reboot.
For those familiar with root and especially with flashing custom ROMs, the reboot options can be a huge time saver. Allowing you to soft reboot, reboot into Recovery, into Safe Mode, into your Bootloader and even, believe it or not, a plain old Reboot.

To get to the settings, simply tap the “x” in the bottom right corner to close out the actual power menu.
What’s next
One huge word of caution folks, at least for my device, Power Menu does not sync with your physical power button. You may press your power button like you normally would, the Power off dialogue will pop up, but tapping on it will do nothing. You will have to fire up the Power Menu app to shutdown your device.
This tool is little more than a nicety for those root users that like to go to the Bootloader or into their Recovery, for the most of us, it will probably be easier to just hit that power button again in order to ‘reboot’ our devices. It’s up to you, Power Menu is free, simple and offers an actual reboot option, I don’t often go to the fancy boot alternatives, but I still use Power Menu.

Next week
Are you getting bored of Xposed modules already? We are not, there are just so many great tweaks to play with. That said, we think we’ll take some time away from root for next week, we may revisiting the world of Android Wear and smartwatches. I haven’t done anything out of the norm with a smartwatch in a while, but I hope to share some cool stuff with you. Let’s leave it open though, we may have to publish another Xposed module on this Android customization series as we get our wearable pieces under control.
Hope you enjoyed this new Power Menu for today, is there a better Xposed Module or other root option that you prefer?
Looking for more Android customizations?
Physics-Based Game ‘Piloteer’ Named App of the Week, Available for Free
Challenging physics-based game Piloteer has been named Apple’s App of the Week, and as a result, it’s available to download for free for the first time since it launched in June of 2015.
In Piloteer, the goal is to navigate a jetpack-wearing inventor through three gameplay environments to complete a series of 60 missions. Piloteer‘s tap-based controls are easy to grasp but difficult to master, so the inventor spends a lot of time being flung around and crashing to the ground in a heap of limbs.
Blending elements of both physics and trick-based games, players will need to maneuver their state-of-the-art jetpack through the skies while completing a myriad of increasingly difficult missions to change public perceptions.
Players will find themselves immersed in a wholly integrated physics simulation, making the beautiful world around them feel dynamic, unpredictable, and alive.
Along with Career mode for completing missions, Piloteer also includes a Free Fly mode and a series of GameCenter achievements to earn.
Piloteer will be available from the App Store for free for the next week. [Direct Link]

Galaxy S7 Edge shows up on Geekbench
MWC 2016 is less than a month away and Samsung is putting in its final preparations for the big flagship unveiling. Based on the latest reports, Samsung is giving us two Galaxy S7 variants, one standard flat 5.1-inch version and one Edge version codenamed SM-G935F. Both devices will seemingly replace their counterparts that were announced around this time last year.
According to recent reports, each Galaxy S7 model will be split into two different variants other than their varying storage capacities. One will run a Snapdragon 820 processor (United States and China), and the other will be powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 processor. The Exynos 8890-powered variant will be the international model.
Earlier today, we caught a glimpse of the Exynos 8890-powered Galaxy S7 Edge on mobile benchmarking site Geekbench. The listing confirmed the device’s model number and revealed a few key specifications.
Based on the test, it’s clear that the Exynos 8890-powered Galaxy S7 will sport 4GB of RAM. This will match the high on the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ that were announced last September. The device will also have Google’s latest Android 6.0.1 preloaded.
In the test, the Exynos 8890-powered Galaxy S7 Edge was able to produce a single-core score of 1363 and a multi-core score of 4951. This isn’t bad, but it’s nowhere near the range we were hoping for. Considering the fact that the scores were so far off what we anticipated judging from a recently leaked AnTuTu score, it’s believed that the unit could have been for testing purposes only. We’ll see exactly what we get in about three weeks time.

Update coming soon to Pandora featuring new ‘Browse’ section loaded with music that you’ll love
Right now, as I write this, I have Pandora on in the background spinning me some great new tunes. Pandora is just an incredible tool for discovering new music without much hassle. Soon though, Pandora is going to be even better at dishing out fresh music that you love to listen to. A new ‘Browse’ section is coming to the app, and Pandora is claiming it will be “your ultimate personalized discovery destination.”
While your stations already introduce you to a lot of great new music, it is not always the quickest process. With the new ‘Browse’ section you can simply click on the tab and immediately find new tunes that match your taste. Basically Pandora looks at everything you have ever given a thumbs up/down, then makes recommendations for new artist stations they think you will love. If you are unsure about adding a station it recommends, do not fret. You will have the option to view a list of songs that will be played on that station. If then you are curious about how many other people in the world are listening to the station you just selected, Pandora has also added in Music Metrics enabling you to see how big of a following that station has.
While ‘Browse’ is definitely the biggest feature coming in the new update, it certainly isn’t the only one. There will also be a few new redesigns. You will now be able to organize your station list by either most recent or alphabetical order. On top of that, there will be a new mini-player affixed to the bottom of the app, so that anywhere you go in the app, say the new ‘Browse’ section, you can be back to your current song with a single tap. Lastly, Pandora has decided to redesign artist pages, making it easier to find information on the artists you love.
Pandora has just rolled out this update to iPhone users today. Unfortunately for us Android users, it looks like we are going to have to play the waiting game. All Pandora has said on the subject is a nice non-informative “coming soon.”
Press Release:

Hawaii AG declares that daily fantasy is indeed gambling

Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin issued an official opinion on Thursday arguing that daily fantasy sports, like DraftKings and Fanduel, constitute gambling under Hawaiian law. “Gambling generally occurs under Hawaii law when a person stakes or risks something of value upon a game of chance or upon any future contingent event not under the person’s control,” Chin wrote, “The technology may have changed, but the vice has not.”
Five other state attorney generals — including Texas, New York and Nevada — have already come out in opposition of daily fantasy sports (DFS). 20 states in total are considering legislative remedies to the issue while Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana and Washington have already banned the games outright.

The Wirecutter’s best deals: The Nexus 6P, a GoPro, and more!

This post was done in partnership with The Wirecutter, a buyer’s guide to the best technology. Read their continuously updated list of deals at TheWirecutter.com.
You may have already seen Engadget posting reviews from our friends at The Wirecutter. Now, from time to time, we’ll also be publishing their recommended deals on some of their top picks. Read on, and strike while the iron is hot — some of these sales could expire mighty soon.
GoPro Hero 4 Silver Action Camera

Street price: $330; MSRP: $400; deal price: $300
While we saw a bunch of deals hit the $310 mark around Black Friday, we only saw it drop to $300 at one other retailer. If you’re interested in this deal, it expires today at 10pm EST.
The GoPro Hero 4 Silver is our pick for the best action camera. Brent Rose writes, “The GoPro Hero4 Silver takes everything we loved about the GoPro Hero3+ Black and makes it easier to use, thanks to a touchscreen and overhauled menu system. Throw in more low-light shooting options and the same price tag, and you have a clear pick for best action camera.”
VIZIO SB3821-C6 38-Inch 2.1 Channel Soundbar

Street price: $139; MSRP: $160; deal price: $119 with Prime
Amazon Prime members can save a quick $20 on this Vizio soundbar. That brings it down to $119, which is the best price we’ve seen on this model. You can also save $20 on the more expensive Vizio SB3851-C0, which is a smaller version of our favorite budget soundbar.
The Vizio SB3821-C6 is the non-surround sound pick in our guide on the best budget soundbar. Chris Heinonen said, “It sounds significantly better than our previous budget top pick; in fact, aside from the more expensive Vizio models, it sounds better than any of the other budget soundbars we’ve tested thus far. As with Vizio’s other 2015 model soundbars, it’s also a giant leap forward in terms of styling over last year’s models.”
Google Nexus 6P 32GB Smartphone

Street price: $500; MSRP: $500; deal price: $450
This matches the best price we’ve seen on the 6P, although this time around it’s only on the matte gold color. However, if you do buy it through Google, there’s an additional $50 off of a Huawei smartwatch. There’s also a $50 off sale running on the 5x 32gb model, which brings it down to $350.
The Nexus 6P is the phablet pick in our guide on the best Android phones. Ryan Whitwam said, “If you like big phones and don’t mind paying $500 up front, you should get the Google Nexus 6P. It’s our favorite Android phone of any we’ve used this year. The 6P runs pure Android 6.0 Marshmallow, sports a top-of-the-line 1440p Super AMOLED screen, and has an attractive unibody aluminum frame. On the back is one of the best cameras available on a smartphone, along with a Nexus Imprint fingerprint scanner that’s even faster and more accurate than the one on the Galaxy S6.”
Refurb Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

Street price: $125 (new); MSRP: $125 (new); deal price: $91
Not quite the best price we’ve seen on a refurbished version of this lens, but close. There was a brief sale where you could drop it down to about $87. This deal is $91 with free shipping. Canon’s refurbished lenses are excellent and come with a full year of warranty service.
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens is the newer version of our fast prime lens pick in our first Canon lenses you should buy guide. The older one was one of the best values in lenses but didn’t have the best build quality. The newer ones has a quiet focusing motor, which is better for video, superior build quality, and even better image quality.
Deals change all the time, and some of these may have expired. To see an updated list of current deals, please go to The Wirecutter.com.
