California secretly listened to cellphone calls from the air

If you had cellphone problems in Orange County within the last few years, you may have been the unwitting victim of a secret cellphone surveillance program, according to the ACLU. Since 2009, the Anaheim Police Department has used the Dirtbox, a military-grade, Stingray-type device that can be mounted on light aircraft. While airborne, it mimics a cellphone tower in order to indiscriminately intercept and record thousands of cell phone calls.

While Anaheim is a relatively small city, police may have also loaned out the device to other Orange County municipalities. As a result, the program “potentially affects the privacy of everyone from Orange County’s 3 million residents to the 16 million people who visit Disneyland every year [and] shows the dangers of allowing law enforcement to secretly acquire surveillance technology,” says ACLU policy attorney Matt Cagle.

The systems overpower regular cellphone towers, so they can potentially disrupt regular mobile networks. “Until now, the only reported domestic use of these powerful devices was by the federal government and the cities of Los Angeles and Chicago,” according to Cagle. However, the CIA recently gave local law enforcement agencies permission to use the devices. The city also bought a Stingray system (above) in 2011, and may have purchased a hand-held device called a Jugular, which allows officers to surreptitiously intercept LTE signals inside buildings.

The ACLU noted that Anaheim police have been very cagey about the use of the devices, saying “the secretive use of this equipment outside of Anaheim means the police not only deprived its own residents of the opportunity to debate or choose whether to be subjected to cell phone surveillance.” Last month, the US Department of Justice said that Federal law enforcement agencies need a warrant to use the devices, and the IRS said it will also require warrants. However, the ACLU was forced to sue the city of Anaheim in order get the surveillance documents, and even then, they were heavily redacted.

WHO says Zika virus is a threat of ‘alarming proportions’

The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chan, wants to make it clear that the Zika virus is something we need to take seriously. In an address yesterday, Chan said that the virus, which has been linked to a slew of birth defects in Brazilian children, has gone from “a mid threat to one of alarming proportions.” Making things even worse, there’s no known vaccine for the Zika virus. The best we can do right now is figure out ways to control mosquito populations, Chan noted in a later briefing, NPR reports.

We’ve actually known of Zika’s existence for decades, but it wasn’t a major concern to humans until an outbreak hit the Pacific islands in 2007. After appearing in the Americas last year, it’s now spread “explosively” to 23 countries and territories in the area, Chan said. She points out there isn’t yet a direct link between the Zika virus infection and birth defects, but they’re “strongly suspected.” Because of the increased concern, she’ll be convening an emergency committee meeting on February 1 to discuss what can be done about Zika.

With no cure on the horizon, the governments in Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia and Jamaica are recommending that women delay their pregnancies to avoid complications. Unfortunately, that strategy probably won’t be very effective, activists say. (If you’re feeling shades of Children of Men from all of this news, you’re not alone.) GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi say they’re exploring Zika vaccine work, but it’ll likely be a while before we see any results. Glaxo notes that it typically takes 10 to 15 years to develop vaccines.

“The level of concern is high, as is the level of uncertainty,” Chan said. “Questions abound. We need to get some answers quickly.”

Yahoo updates app and homepage with more news-centric focus

yahoo_site_app_update

Yahoo announced today an overhaul to the Yahoo app and the platform’s homepage on the desktop for U.S. users. Yahoo says the focus of the updates is to help users consume content and engage the community based on news. Part of the effort is to help surface developing stories and then get the community engaged by removing barriers.

Yahoo indicates they undertook the redesign and refocus effort based on trends in mobile data consumption. During 2015, news and magazine apps saw usage grow by 141%, which Yahoo thinks is justification for shifting their platform to focus more on news and delivery of a news feed to users.

Yahoo says their news feed will now be endless with related stores showing up inline. This means multiple browser tabs do not need to be utilized to sift through content. Yahoo says they are also making it easier to access both curated content as well as content based on user preferences. To help make that last portion function better, users need to increase their use of the platform.

The second piece of the update involves encouraging “conversations” around the news that is being delivered. Yahoo indicates comments will now be delivered in-line to make it easier for users to “surface” the thoughts of the community. Likewise, users will be able to share their own ideas and contributions in a more direct way.

If you are interested in what Yahoo is doing with their platform, head over to their homepage or install the Yahoo news app from the Play Store using the link below.

Despite beating forecasts, Qualcomm financial results disappoint

qualcomm_logo_072115

Qualcomm reported financial results for their first quarter, which ended on December 27, 2015, with numbers that beat forecasts despite being down year-over-year. Perhaps more disappointing though is the forecast looking ahead to the rest of 2016 as Qualcomm is faced with a slumping mobile device market that they think will be worse than what analysts are projecting.

Qualcomm says their quarterly earnings per share exceeded the high end of their initial estimates based on better than expected sales combined with cost cutting efforts undertaken. The cost cutting efforts included new license agreements with Chinese sources involved in their production chain.

Qualcomm says interest in their Snapdragon 820 processor has been strong, although they do not anticipate seeing an impact until the second half of 2016. For Q1, chip shipments are down 10% compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Despite the slide in chip shipments, Qualcomm did see actual devices shipped increase by 8% when comparing Q1 year-over-year. There was a slight, only one percent, slide in average selling prices from 2015 to 2016.

For the first quarter, Qualcomm saw revenues slide 19% compared to Q1 2015, falling to $5.8 billion. This translated to $1.7 billion operating income, which represented a 31% decrease versus the same period from a year earlier.

Qualcomm pointed out in their release that they have an agreement in place with TDK Corporation to launch a joint venture to focus on technology for use primarily in Internet of Things devices. Qualcomm’s investment in the venture will cost $1.2 billion with closing expected to occur in early 2017. Qualcomm will have a 51% stake in the joint venture and will reserve the right to buy out TDK Corporation at a later time. Clearly the move is intended to help protect the companies from the falling market for smartphones, notably in China where the market is maturing and is no longer seeing explosive growth rates.

Samsung Widens Gap Over Apple in Worldwide Smartphone Market

The latest numbers from market research firm Strategy Analytics reveal that Samsung increased its lead over Apple as the world’s largest smartphone maker, after shipping 81.3 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of the 2015 calendar year. Apple announced earlier this week that it sold a record 74.8 million iPhones during the same three-month period encompassing the busy holiday shopping season.

Galaxy-S6-iPhone-6s

Global smartphone shipments grew 12 percent annually from 1.28 billion in 2014 to a record 1.44 billion in 2015, according to the data. Samsung and Apple contributed 317.2 million and 192.7 million smartphone sales respectively to that worldwide total, while Huawei, Lenovo-Motorola, and Xiaomi rounded off the top five smartphone makers. All other vendors collectively shipped 637.5 million smartphones in 2015.

Samsung led the fourth quarter with 20.1 percent market share, a slight increase over its 19.6 percent market share in the year-ago quarter. Conversely, Apple’s fourth quarter market share was 18.5 percent, a slight decline from its 19.6 percent share in the fourth quarter of 2014. Huawei, Lenovo-Motorola and Xiaomi had market shares of 8.1 percent, 5 percent and 4.8 percent respectively.

Strategy-Analytics-Q4-15

In the year-ago quarter, Apple matched Samsung’s 74.5 million smartphones shipped on the strength of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but its South Korean rival has since pulled ahead again. The comparison is largely unbalanced, however, as Samsung sells dozens of different smartphone models worldwide, while Apple currently only sells the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5s.

Apple expects iPhone sales will likely decline in the March quarter, marking the first year-over-year decline since the smartphone was released over eight years ago. The decline will be realized if Apple sells fewer than 61.2 million iPhones this quarter, ending in late March. iPhone growth in the just-announced first fiscal quarter of 2016 was the slowest since the smartphone’s introduction in 2007.

Strategy Analytics has also published smartphone data for the Chinese market, where Apple trails closely behind Xiaomi and Huawei.

Samsung’s fourth quarter earnings out, profits down 40%

Samsung booth

Samsung has released its consolidated fourth quarter earnings for 2015 and they don’t paint a pretty picture. Samsung’s earnings for the final quarter of the year were far from good, with the South Korean giant reporting net profit of just 3.2 trillion Korean won ($2.7 billion), a massive 40% drop and well below earnings expectations.

Samsung’s quarterly revenue remained relatively unchanged at 53 trillion won ($44 billion) although operating profit increased to 6.14 trillion won ($5.1 billion). A “difficult business environment and slowing IT demand” were held accountable for the massive drop in profitability, but these were compounded by a weakening of Samsung’s semiconductor, memory and display divisions, which have been picking up the slack for a diminished mobile division in recent times.

Samsung-Electronics-FY-2015-Results.pdf 2016-01-28 16-33-49 Samsung

“Strong economic headwinds”

Samsung faced “strong economic headwinds, including a sharp fall in oil prices” during the quarter, producing yearly revenue of 200.65 trillion won ($167 billion) for the year with operating profit of 26.41 trillion won ($22 billion), although sales increased progressively throughout the year. The company is predicting tough times ahead for 2016, especially in its mobile division, which has been struggling to turn things around. Nevertheless, Samsung is still the number one smartphone seller in the world, according to IDC.

The IM division, which includes both Samsung Mobile and IT, saw a quarterly revenue of 25 trillion won ($21 billion) with operating profit of 2.23 trillion won ($1.85 billion). For comparison’s sake, that’s a 7.5% drop in revenue for the year compared to 2014 and a 30% drop in operating profit. Samsung reported a QoQ drop in smartphone shipments “due to a year-end inventory adjustment” with increased marketing spend affecting the bottom line.

2015 global sales IDC

“Softening demand and intensifying competition”

As for 2016, this is what Samsung had to say in a statement: “In the first quarter, although slowing demand for smartphones and tablets is forecast due to seasonality, and in spite of slowing shipments of Samsung smartphones, an enhanced product mix with the introduction of new line-ups, such as the Galaxy A (2016) series, is expected to help stabilize sales and profitability.”

But Samsung is expecting single-digit growth in both smartphone and tablet sales in 2016, citing “softening demand and intensifying competition”. The earnings statement is full of pledges of increased profitability and shipments throughout the year ahead, but with very little to back it up. Samsung Pay, wearables, software and tablets are all expected to increase to Samsung’s bottom line.

2015 global vendor list IDC

Samsung expects a tough year ahead

With excess chipset and memory supplies in the fourth quarter and diminished profitability for the display division as well, the areas Samsung has been relying on to compensate for a borderline mobile business are now also in trouble. Massive investment in a flexible OLED factory, new chipset customers like Qualcomm and new Internet of Things and Smart Home products are expected to soften the blow, but they can’t cover up the fact that Samsung is facing a very tough year.

Do you think Samsung will get out of this slump? What areas do you think it should focus on?

Watch tonight’s Republican debate with Engadget

Tonight, the field of Republican candidates for president will face off again on the debate stage. This is the last time the whole band will get together before the Iowa caucuses on February 1st. Well… almost the whole band. Professional blowhard Donald Trump will not be in attendance because Fox News refused to remove Megyn Kelly as one of the moderators. (Presumably he’s somewhere hiding and wondering why the mean lady asked him so many questions.) Of course, with Trump out, there should be more time for the other candidates to make their voices heard. And ideological, libertarian favorite Rand Paul has regained his seat at the big boy table this evening.

If you want to watch the undercard, featuring Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and Jim Gilmore tune in to Fox News or to FoxNews.com at 7pm ET. But the main event will kick off at 9pm ET, with Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, John Kasich and Rand Paul.

In addition to the televised feed and livestream, you can also enjoy additional online content brought you by Fox News and Google. Candidates will be given the opportunity to publish more fleshed out answers to questions and rebuttles as the debates are still on going.

But, before the festivities kick off, you should catch up on the candidate’s positions by checking out our guide to the 2016 election, including our guide to the issues. Of course, follow @engadget and its editors for our take on the candidate’s tech and science positions.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #engadgetelectionguide to join the conversations. And let us know if there’s any questions you have about the candidates positions on science and tech issues.

The iPad Pro can handle firmware updates for accessories

Well, here’s an interesting development. Some iPad Pro users have noticed that, with the latest version of iOS 9, their monstrous tablet is able to push firmware updates to a connected accessory. Many customers were experiencing lag and other niggles with Logitech’s Create Keyboard Case, but found they could fix the problem by updating their slate to the second beta of iOS 9.3. As German developer Stefan Wolfrum notes, when the keyboard is attached through the Smart Connector an intriguing “Accessory Update” option appears on-screen. Within less than a minute, the update is completed and the problems are seemingly resolved.

It’s the first time we can recall an iOS device updating an accessory’s firmware in this way. The mystery, at least for now, are the requirements for such an exchange. Is it dependent on the Smart Connector, the new version of iOS, or both? If it does require Apple’s fancy new port, that means the useful feature is restricted to the iPad Pro for now. Given at least one new iPad is expected in March, however, it might not be long before we see the capability in another, smaller and cheaper iOS device.
