HTC’s new flagship phone will cost $100 more after launch in the US

If the $399 pricing of HTC’s new flagship phone, the One A9, sounds like a sweet deal, you may want to reserve a unit right now. Turns out it’s just a “special promotional pre-sale” for the online store and select retail outlets in the US, a company spokesperson told Engadget, which will soon be over. The electronics maker failed to mention that in the past, so now you only have a few days to decide whether you want to purchase the One A9 at its current price. Starting on November 7th at 12:01 AM, htc.com will be selling the phone for $499.

VR simulator for mice helps researchers study Alzheimer’s

White Laboratory Mouse On Top of Test Tubes

A group of scientists from Janelia Research Campus have built their lab mice some sort of an Oculus Rift of their own. Okay, so it’s not a tiny VR headset for rodents — though that would have been amusing to see — but a simulator with walls that touch the mouse’s whiskers on either side. This makes the mouse think it’s moving through a maze, when it’s really just running on a small spherical treadmill. The researchers created the system not because the lab mice needed entertainment: they built it so they can observe how a mammal’s brain reacts to injury, learns how to find routes and forms memories. They believe that by having a better grasp of memory formation, we can also understand diseases that cause memory loss (like Alzheimer’s) a lot better.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Looks like Facebook is doing their due diligence to deliver as much information to users as possible so they don’t exit the app. Facebook has announced an update that is starting to roll out that delivers a personalized notifications tab. According to Facebook the new tab is based on users feed back that want more than what Grandma had to say about your last tattoo. Take a quick look at the video of it in action to see what to expect.

The expanded notifications tab will bring in a number of things that might remind you of Google Now a bit. On the friends side of things you can expect milestones like birthdays and life events. You will see TV show reminders and Sports Scores based on the Pages you have Liked and upcoming events you have joined. There will be other optional things you can have the tab show such as weather updates, movies playing nearby, places to eat close to you and things happening around you.

Facebook Notifications TabFacebook Notifications TabCertainly Facebook addicts will welcome this addition to their notifications panel, while haters will scream GOOGLE NOW COPY CAT! Change is a good thing and the right people will appreciate it. Be on the lookout for the update in the Play Store any day now.

Inspirational: Senior wish organization gives 97 year old Olive Horrell her dream, to tour Google and see the tech magic

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

This might not factor into the Android arena, but it is certainly a great story that I cam across on Cnet this evening. It involves a 97 year old woman by the name of Olive Horrell. She grew up through the technological changes that only someone her age could have appreciation for. She saw the birth of the Microwave, Jet airplanes, Video Games, Computers, GPS, Apple, Android and more things than I can even name in a single sitting.

Her lifelong dream was to become an engineer and be part of it all, but in a time when that was not the thing to do as a woman, she was forced to step back and just watch. Now, at 97 and living in an assisted living home, she uses her MacBook to send emails and longed for a chance to go to Google headquarters in Mountain View California. As she put it, it is the “epitome of all that wonderful tech stuff that comes out.” Her wish was granted thanks to the assisted living community of Brookdale and the Wish of a Lifetime organization, Olive got her wish and received a VIP tour of the complex that many of us wish to even drive past.

Google took her into the self driving cars, virtual reality and explained the cloud, to some degree. Take a watch of the video. It is such an amazing experience to see, and I have to agree with her final observation, everyone does spend  a little too much time living life through their smartphones and not enough time living life.

I can only imagine what it would be like to take my Grandma to Google for the day. She would be amazed, lost, confused and probably quite comical.

Consumer Cellular adds Huawei Vision 3 LTE and Moto G LTE to its affordable smartphone repertoire

v4-Blog-Moto-G-Vision-3

Most of you probably haven’t heard of Consumer Cellular, but it is a very neat MVNO with low prices and (according to Nielsen Mobile Insights) the highest overall customer satisfaction. But let’s keep in mind they do not own their network, which may keep them at the mercy of others, but also grants them plenty of benefits.

For one, Consumer Cellular is not limited to a single network and operates through both AT&T and T-Mobile, taking advantage of two of the best networks around. Their plans also start for as low as $9.99, and you can add text/data packages for as little as $2.50. Of course, you will want to pay more for any significant amounts of data (unlimited texts and 1.5 GB of data would cost $20).

But what about the phones? Though they do carry the latest iPhones, we must accept the MVNO doesn’t really offer any popular high-end Android options. These phones sure are affordable, though, and today they are adding a couple new devices to their repertoire: the Moto G LTE (3rd gen) and the Huawei Vision 3 LTE.

Moto G LTE (3rd gen) specs

  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • 5-inch 720p display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 8 GB of internal storage
  • MicroSD support
  • 13 MP rear-facing camera
  • 5 MP front-facing camera
  • 4G LTE
  • 2470 mAh battery

Huawei Vision 3 LTE specs

  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 5-inch 720p display
  • 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 8 GB of internal storage
  • MicroSD support
  • 5 MP rear-facing camera
  • 2 MP front-facing camera
  • 4G LTE

As you can see, these phones are not that stunning, but they are definitely something to write home about. These smartphones are super affordable at only $150 for the Moto G and $100 for the Huawei Vision 3. And the latter seems to be some kind of Consumer Cellular exclusive, as it is nowhere else to be found.

I say these are good options (though not too amazing) if you are sure you want to stick with Consumer Cellular, but remember these plans can be taken advantage of with any compatible, unlocked handset. The ability to bring your own smartphone makes these plan a bit more enticing. Especially considering Consumer Cellular offers no high-end Android smartphones.

What do you guys think? Are any of you buying one of these two gadgets? Also, please hit the comments and let us know your experience with Consumer Cellular, if you have ever used their services.

Etsy ASAP offers same-day delivery in NYC this holiday season

Just in time for the holiday season, online crafted goods mecca Etsy is launching a local delivery pilot in New York City. Just as rumored, Etsy will partner with Postmates, a company making a name for itself by charging pretty exorbitant delivery fees for all kinds of goods, from Taco Bell to Apple gadgets. Etsy says that about 5,000 different items will be available for either same-day or next-day delivery as part of the Etsy ASAP program; once you place your order, you’ll be able to pick from three-hour delivery windows for your purchase. Naturally, you can filter your searches by things available for ASAP delivery, but note that these items are going to cost you — there’s a flat $20 fee for same-day delivery. Etsy says the pilot will run in Manhattan, Queens and parts of Brooklyn through the end of the holiday season; the company will then evaluate what’s next for the plan after that.

Nanofiber gel and snake venom work together to stop the bleeding

Brazil Snakes

Researchers at Rice University announced a novel use for batroxobin, a hemotoxic component in the venom of two South American pit viper species. They’ve figured out how to leverage it as a potent coagulant — when combined with a nanofiber hydrogel called SB50 — that could save countless lives in surgery. Medical science has actually been employing batroxobin as a topical clotting agent and thrombosis treatment since the mid 1930s. Used along with the gel, now it’s shown a capability to stop the flow of blood even if the patient is on heparin, a powerful anticoagulant administered before some surgeries.
