Cyanogen OS powered ZUK Z1 hits European markets for €280

ZUK Z1 front

Following its debut in China a few months back, the ZUK Z1 is heading to the European market through a series of eBay sales. While it might not come directly from a familiar brand name, the ZUK Z1 packs in some noteworthy hardware at a price point that’s tough to beat.

The oddest specification on the sheet is the inclusion of a Snapdragon 801 processor, a staple of the early 2014 range of flagship smartphones. This chip is certainly no slouch but it won’t quite keep up with today’s high-end chips. However, this is a pretty suitable trade-off if it helps keep the price low.

The ZUK Z1 also features a 1080p 5.5-inch display, with 450 nit peak brightness and 1500:1 contrast ratio. The phone also comes equipped with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is easily a match for today’s high-end phones. There’s a 13 megapixel Sony image sensor on the back, accompanied by an 8 megapixel camera on the front.

ZUK Z1 side

Extras are plentiful too. The phone comes with a huge 4,100mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, dual-SIM card slots with 4G LTE support and Cyanogen OS 12.1 installed. It is certainly worth checking out the spec sheet’s network bands against your carrier before making a purchase though.

If the specifications have caught your interest, you are currently able to buy a ZUK Z1 through the Spanish eBay site for as little as €279.99. This offer will be running until October 6th, when the retail price will revert back to €374.99. If you live elsewhere in Europe, be sure to check out this listing between October 4th and 11th when another €280 sale is scheduled to take place.

Chromecast-enabled Google Photos now out for Android devices

Google has rolled out the latest version of its Photos app for Android devices, and it comes with all the new features the company announced during its Nexus event. The app is now Chromecast-enabled like the company promised, giving you the power to view photos and videos on your TV. Several users can also start uploading and subscribing to one album, and you can share animations directly from Photos to WhatsApp. If you’re in the US, you’ll be able to label people in photos, so you can easily find them later, and then merge that label with different search terms such as locations. In addition, you can adjust the speed of any slow-motion videos you shoot with the Nexus 5X or 6P in-app — if and when you do get either phone, that is. The updated app is now available for download from Google Play, while the iOS and web versions will be refreshed at some point in the future.

Sprint customers: two more weeks for unlimited data, talk, and text at $60/month

Sprint announced yesterday, that its $60 per month unlimited data, talk, and text plan will increase to $70 per month on October 16th. This will not affect customers who already have the plan or those who enroll before this date.

According to the press release, Sprint and T-Mobile are the only companies that have this type of unlimited plan. Sprint is quick to emphasize that T-Mobile’s is $80, which still is $10 higher than its plan will be after October 16.

This unlimited plan is for both new and existing customers, but let’s make no mistake about it, the company’s focus is on the existing customers.

This is an expected move, considering the fact that T-Mobile recently surpassed Sprint in August to become the third largest carrier in the U.S.

And if this doesn’t convince you that Sprint wants to entice consumers from these other networks, just think of how it must still feel after its lost bid at a merger with T-Mobile. It was just three months ago that T-Mobile and Sprint’s respective CEOs, John Legere and Marcelo Claure, had some harsh words to say about each other’s mobile plans.

Sprint has probably wanted to show it can succeed on its own against the other carriers or at least T-Mobile. Don’t expect another bid for a merger between these two anytime soon.

First official images of the BlackBerry Priv are released into the wild

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

There’s been so much Google news lately that this piece of news kind of slipped past us, until now. The BlackBerry Priv, or as some are calling it, PRIV by BlackBerry, was officially announced last week and has been getting a fair amount of press since then – most notably, a mildly awkward interview featuring the device and BlackBerry CEO John Chen. To further its legend before an actual announcement event, some official images of the BlackBerry Priv surfaced and show us more of the device that we’ve all seen so much of already:

Although the side view photos actually show us very little, it does highlight how thin the device is despite having a physical keyboard tucked inside it. While much of the talk has been about the physical hardware of the Priv, one of the most important things about the device is its emphasis on privacy (hence the name) and what it means for Android in the commercial sector, a sector that Android has traditionally struggled to break into despite being the most populous operating system on the planet. We’re expecting to see the Priv announced in November, but we expect we’ll be seeing a few more details between now and then.

Sony answers your 4K display questions

sony xperia z5 premium aa 3

Sony announced a world’s first with the Xperia Z5 Premium and its 4K display, but a revelation that the handset actual renders the majority of content at just 1080p has left a lot of consumers a little unsure about Sony’s accomplishment. To settle the grumbling, the company has taken a little time out to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about the Xperia Z5 Premium’s 4K display. Here’s a summary.

The biggest question is probably when is and isn’t the 4K display actually used to its full potential. Sony has already stated that captured pictures and videos can be displayed in 4K and has further clarified that the 4K display also activates if a third-party streaming service is sending over content at that resolution too. Sony also says that its display is futureproofed to support additional 4K content as it becomes more widespread.

Q- How is (and isn’t) Xperia Z5 Premium’s 4K display used?

A- Xperia Z5 Premium uses its 4K display when you’re viewing either the 4K content you’ve captured using your device or third-party 4K content from streaming services – all other content (including the homescreen and apps) are displayed in 1080p Full HD or lower resolution to simply optimise performance, power consumption and battery

The main reason for dropping 4K support most of the time is down to battery performance. Even rendering the general UI at a higher resolution puts additional strain on the phone’s processing components and battery, and Sony seems to have decided that any boost to visual quality isn’t worth the effects on battery life. A smart choice.

Q- Why is the 4K display only used for Sony’s Album/Movie apps and everything else (Home screen, apps, browsing etc) is rendered in Full HD 1080p?

A- There’s a few reasons – first up, after extensive user research and testing we found that rendering entertainment content in 4K, but still being able to access and use all the other great Sony smartphone features as normal without compromising on battery life, was an absolute priority for users … Secondly, many third-party apps are not designed or capable of running at 4K resolution (yet),

sony xperia z5 premium aa 15See also: Sony Xperia Z5 Premium hands-on and first look48

As for why anyone would actually want a 4K display squeezed into a smartphone, Sony says that the increase in resolution delivers a richer viewing experience than 1080p. Although, the company then states that pixel density is just one part of its formula for a superior viewing experience. It might be worth noting that company’s TRILUMINOS Display technology features in a number of other non-4K Sony smartphones.

Q- Why would I need a 4K display in a smartphone – what’s the benefit?

A- It offers a viewing experience four times the resolution of Full HD, delivering a more lifelike, richer viewing experience achieved in three core areas: a dense 806ppi resolution; vivid colour with TRILUMINOS Display for mobile, Dynamic Contrast Enhancer for contrast and X-Reality for crystal clear clarity.

You can read the full answers given by Sony over at the source link below, along with a couple of other questions and answers about 4K screenshot sizes and the resolution’s impact on storage capacity.

Are you sold on Sony’s balance of 4K and 1080p rendering, or is the feature rather useless if it’s barely switched on?

Deezer gets into live football commentary with TalkSport’s help

Deezer

In recent months, Spotify and Deezer have mixed things up by extending beyond music and into podcasts and video. But what about live content? That’s exactly what Deezer hopes will set it apart from rivals after it launched a new partnership with TalkSport, one of the world’s biggest sports radio stations. From today, customers in the UK and Germany can access live coverage of Premier League and Bundesliga games respectively. It’ll also host match fixtures and results, football-centric music playlists and extra content from Deezer’s football editors. Football podcasts will also be available, but only for UK subscribers. If you’re a Deezer user and want to see what it’s all about, Football on Deezer is prominently displayed on the homepage, as well as in the apps section. It’s also available on free and Premium tiers, but non-paying customers will need to sit through ads.

NASA reveals potential low-cost missions for the Discovery program

NASA has announced the five new project concepts it’s considering for the Discovery program, which focuses on low-cost space missions. It’s the same program we have to thank for the Dawn spacecraft that recently captured a sunlit Ceres, the Messenger probe that crashed into Mercury after it ran out of power in April and the Mars InSight lander that’s currently heading for the red planet. Two of those five concepts want to take a closer look at the second planet from the sun: the first one is called Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry and Imaging or DAVINCI. Its spacecraft will study the chemical composition of Venus’ atmosphere during its descent and will investigate whether there are still active volcanoes on the planet.

The Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy mission (VERITAS), on the other hand, wants to capture surface images and produce high-resolution maps of the same planet. You can see an artist’s interpretation of the NASA JPL-conceived VERITAS spacecraft in the image above. Next is Psyche — a mission that aims to study the metallic asteroid Psyche, which scientists believe was a protoplanet until its rocky layers were stripped off after crashing into another object.

Another JPL concept called Near Earth Object Camera (NEOCam) aims to find ten times the number of near-Earth objects that’s been discovered thus far. Finally, the Lucy mission plans to send a spacecraft to the outer solar system in order to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids that could hold the secrets to our solar system’s history. The teams behind these ideas will receive $3 million each to conduct studies and conjure up analyses to convince NASA to choose their project. NASA is earmarking $500 million for each mission it chooses (there might be more than one) and will announce its decision by September 2016.

ITV Player comes to Amazon’s Fire TV

ITV Player

ITV’s replacement for ITV Player is meant to launch before the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean the company is holding back on its app expansion. As promised, the broadcaster has brought ITV Player to the Amazon Fire TV, letting you catch-up on all of your favourite programmes on-demand. The rollout is staggered, however, as Fire TV Stick owners will have to a couple of weeks until they can get in on the action. And if you’ve pre-ordered Amazon’s new 4K-ready Fire TV, that too will support the app when it starts shipping on October 5th. When ITV Hub does launch, with a focus on live TV, ITV Player will be swapped for the rebranded app, but you shouldn’t need to lift a finger.
