Why low to mid range phones are the “Next Big Thing”

About 3 years ago Samsung released the Galaxy S 3 and with it, their “Next Big Thing” marketing slogan. At the time, the slogan fit the brand and where they were going almost perfectly. It wasn’t too much later that they released the Galaxy Note II and popularized the phablet. The truth is, that they were churning out hit after hit, but something happened along the way.

A man named John Legere happened. He took over as CEO of T-Mobile and promptly began changing the mobile paradigm. The first thing he did was move away from contracts. Instead of subsidizing the consumer’s phone and locking them into a 2-year contract, he replaced the contract with a loan for the phone.

I remember this very well, as I bought my Galaxy S3 around that same time. At the time, it was the best smartphone available. I had it for a few months and then the Galaxy Note II came out. I then opted to get that phone and passed the Galaxy S3 down to my wife.

An interesting thing happened over the next few years. My wife was content with her S3 and I was also content with my Note II. Before I knew it, my loan had been paid and my bill dropped by $40/month.

All of a sudden upgrading my phone became a big deal because it meant that my payments would be going up again. No, thank you. I was saving $40/month on my bill. So then what to do with my phone? The reality was that our phones had become midlevel phones, and they could still handle almost everything that we threw at them.

Later on my wife would drop her S3 and shatter the screen. Faced with the prospect of purchasing a new phone for her, I started looking at our options. About that same time, Amazon drastically discounted their Fire Phone and sold it unlocked for $180 with a full year of Prime included. I was in like Flynn. Of course, I made sure my wife was OK with it, but she’s not really a techy person and really doesn’t care that much about what phone she uses. In the end, we were very impressed with the phone, and it did everything she needed with ease.

Not too much later, I started looking into a new phone myself. I was fed up with the lack of support on my phone and felt like both T-Mobile and Samsung had strategically decided not to offer KitKat for the Note II. After all, the Note 4 was coming out, and they would rather I just purchase a new phone.

I ended up finding a new open box and unlocked Asus PadFone X for $200. I was, again, in like Flynn, and I was even able to sell my Note II for the same money. For those unfamiliar with the PadFone X, it has similar specs to the Galaxy S5, but with a 9″ tablet dock.

Now, many of the other carriers have followed suit and gotten rid of their contracts as well. So what happens now that more people can enjoy a lower cell phone bill while having a paid-off phone? Well for one, it makes getting the latest and greatest phone a much harder decision. Why spend $800 on a phone that is realistically way more than you will ever need or use? There are too many phones that offer great specs for nowhere near as high a price. Here are a few relatively inexpensive phones.

The cheapest phone listed here, the LG Leon, costs less than $100 and the most expensive, Motorola Moto X Pure, is still under $400. While the LG Leon isn’t a powerhouse by any means, it certainly can handle most tasks that a casual smartphone user would throw at it. The Moto G is a much better phone for under $200, but the remaining 3 phones have features that can challenge most other flagship phones.

While I think you’d have a hard time convincing a Galaxy Note 5 user that any of these phones is a contender, let’s take a look at how they compare against it.

https://s.graphiq.com/rx/widgets.js
While Zenfone2 doesn’t have the fingerprint scanner, S Pen, metal frame or 2K screen like that found in the Note 5, it has the fastest processor out of all the phones, and when you combine that with 4GB of RAM, it makes for a very fast phone for less than 1/2 the price.

The Moto X Pure also does not have the fingerprint scanner, stylus, or metal frame, but it has the highest pixel density and is the most customizable of any of these phones. And for a little over 1/2 of the cost of the Note 5, this phone is a real bargain.

The last one is the Blu Pure XL. This phone has a fingerprint scanner and a metal frame. It has 3GB of RAM and a 2k screen. Out of all of them it also has the most megapixels crammed into the camera. Coming in at $50 less than the Moto X Pure, it seems to be the best overall in the comparison.

Obviously the Note 5 is the top dog spec wise, but it is several hundred dollars more than any of the other phones. I believe that the reason that Samsung’s sales have been slipping is because they are pretty much focusing on their flagships and ignoring the market trends.

I’m not saying that there is no place for the ultra-specced flagship models. I’m just saying that Samsung should focus more on what people want. And what people want more than an ultra-specced flagship model today is an affordable cell phone payment.

Samsung could make a phone specced like a Galaxy Note 3 and offer it at a similar price point as Asus, Motorola, and Blu, but in the end it doesn’t fit with their current business model. So let them continue to focus on phones few people can afford, and they will find that people will spend their money elsewhere.

What do you think? Do you agree? What phone are you considering for your next device? Let us know in the comments below.

Binge watching gets easier with latest Google Play Movies & TV update

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Netflix has the lock on binge watching. Well, almost. One thing I think it is missing when casting from a device is the ability to know I am still watching because my phone is still moving. I am sure the developers could get that put into place at some point. The latest update to Google Play Movies & TV is bringing in some binge watching abilities in the latest update, version 3.9. Now as a show ends in the closing credits you will get the same sort of binge ability Netflix offers with a thumb nail of the next episode, a countdown timer and relevant info about it.

Of course binge watching your favorite series counts on you owning the next set of episodes. For those of you curious, yes, the app updated on Android TV as well to let you binge watch from you NVIDIA Shield or what have you.

Other updates for the app include support for Android Marshmallow, very important since Google is pushing out the update to Nexus devices. Users of Roku will find themselves with an easier setup method to get Play Movies & TV up and running and there are also the usual number of bug fixes and stability improvements.

Be sure to snag the latest update via the Play Store through the link below.

Be very excited, Bud Light has made a smart beer fridge

budlight-smart-eFridgeThere are a ton of smart home tech products all trying to make your life easier. However, one of them has been strangely left out. A beer fridge. Possibly the most important item in your house doesn’t have a smart home version. It’s madness. Today, that all changes thanks to Bud Light. Introducing the world’s first smart home connected beer fridge, the Bud-E Fridge.

With the smart fridge you will be able to view real-time information such as the number of beers left in the fridge and when the beers reach the perfect temperature. Also, all of this info can be seen on your smartphone.

The Bud-E Fridge is a first-of-its-kind smart home beer fridge that enables consumers the ability to view real-time information from their fridge – from the number of Bud Light cans and bottles in it to when the optimal temperature is reached for them – from anywhere that they have access to a mobile device.

However, it goes even farther than just that. It can hold 78 beers, and now for the coolest part, alerts you to when a sports game is coming up to tell you to get more beer if you are low. Even if there are no games coming up, the fridge will still alert you to get more beer if it is low. AKA, what dreams are made of.

Amazing idea, but now time for the bad news. The Bud Light Bud E-Fridge is only available in California… We can only hope it catches on and is available all over the world soon.

Press Release:

NEW YORK, Oct. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Bud Light, the official beer sponsor of the National Football League, is introducing the ultimate in smart technology innovation at the start of the season to ensure that sports fans never run out of Bud Light when watching the action. The Bud-E Fridge is a first-of-its-kind smart home beer fridge that enables consumers the ability to view real-time information from their fridge – from the number of Bud Light cans and bottles in it to when the optimal temperature is reached for them – from anywhere that they have access to a mobile device.

Developed by Bud Light, Buzz Connect, and Linq IQ, the Bud-E Fridge and its accompanying smart-phone app (available on both Apple and Android devices) lets sports fans program their favorite sports teams so that the Bud-E Fridge can keep them up-to-date on when games are approaching. When games are approaching, the Bud-E Fridge immediately lets them know if their game day supply of Bud Light needs replenishing, and as fans re-stock their fridge, which has a 78 beer capacity, the Bud-E Fridge updates the stock level in real time. A countdown timer indicates when the Bud Light will reach the optimal serving temperature, which the Bud-E Fridge achieves by chilling beers below 32 degrees without freezing them.

“We are constantly looking for innovative ways to enhance the consumer’s experience and the Bud-E Fridge represents an unprecedented advance,” said Lucas Herscovici, Vice President of Connections at Anheuser-Busch. “With the Bud-E Fridge, we’ve created something that shows how we continue to push the boundaries in technology and innovation, particularly in the connected home of the future, and provide beer drinkers with new level of convenience to better enjoy Bud Light with their friends.”

The Bud-E Fridge also provides consumers with alerts of when it is running low on Bud Light, regardless of whether an upcoming game is taking place, via the smart phone app. In addition to these alerts, when the Bud-E Fridge is low on Bud Light, the mobile app integrates with beer-delivery service, Saucey, allowing consumers to order Bud Light for home delivery in San Francisco, LA, and San Diego.

Bud Light has a history of success with new technology innovations in the beer industry. This past January, Bud Light rolled out the Bud Light Button in the District of Columbia, a beer delivery app that allows users to order Bud Light with one easy tap of the finger.

The Bud-E Fridge is available for purchase by California residents only at this time at BudLight.com/efridge.

Spotify now available for MirrorLink via RockScout

spotify-logo

Spotify is becoming vital for music addicts – it’s everywhere and many of us can’t live without it! And it’s really no wonder why. The music streaming service offers an immense library of songs one can listen to for free! Paying for the premium subscription sure improves the experience, but it’s mostly not necessary if you can handle an ad or two (and obligatory shuffle on mobile).

The popular application continues to make its way to missing platforms (even though there’s not many left). The latest supported system happens to be MirrorLink, powered by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). It works through RockScout, which is essentially a link between your car’s entertainment system and supported applications on your phone. With this new addition, users will be able to control Spotify using a car-optimized interface, featuring large buttons and a simplified design.

“Spotify is obsessed with figuring out how to bring music into every part of your life, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing. MirrorLink provides a simple way to bring Spotify into the car and on the dashboard so listeners can access their favorite music in a manner suitable for the driving environment.” -Lawrence Kennedy, Sr. Product Owner for Automotive at Spotify

Of course, here at Android Authority we are fans of Android Auto, but we know many of you are still rocking Mirror Link. Anything that helps Android users is good news, and this will definitely get the job done in terms of providing a fun Spotify vehicle experience. RockScout App Brings Spotify to MirrorLink®-Enabled Cars

Beaverton, OR – October 5, 2015 — Starting today, Spotify Android users can bring the Spotify mobile app to their dashboards via MirrorLink® RockScout, a simple download that makes participating Android music apps MirrorLink-compatible. The
Car Connectivity Consortium <http://www.mirrorlink.com/>, creators of MirrorLink, made the announcement as more and more apps become available in the MirrorLink ecosystem.

“Spotify is obsessed with figuring out how to bring music into every part of your life, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing,” said Lawrence Kennedy, Sr. Product Owner for Automotive at Spotify. “MirrorLink provides a simple way to bring Spotify into the
car and on the dashboard so listeners can access their favorite music in a manner suitable for the driving environment.”

RockScout leverages Media Browser Service, a standard Android API, to make Android audio apps compatible with MirrorLink. MirrorLink compatibility means apps are driver-aware and controllable via touch and rotary-knob infotainment systems. The Android application
can be enabled without further development or integration, and the solution is free and open-source.

“Spotify’s compatibility with MirrorLink is a great moment for both brands, based on Spotify’s undeniable popularity among music lovers and the sheer size of MirrorLink’s global install base,” said Alan Ewing, President and Executive director of the CCC. “In
a larger sense, RockScout represents a major advance for MirrorLink by providing drivers with extended access to some of the most popular music and audio apps of all time.”

Apple buys an AI startup with eye on better photo management

toronto canada september 13 ...

Apple’s acquired a startup with a keen focus on developing artificial intelligence systems that run locally on your device rather than at an offsite server farm. In Perceptio’s case (why does every start-up sound like Aviato now?), it’s using deep learning for photo classification rather than other mundane tasks, according to both Bloomberg and ReCode. The latter notes that Facebook and the like do this with cloud processing but Apple is incredibly big on not storing user-data offsite. So it makes sense that the company would be interested in bringing this sort of imaging tech to its handsets and computers — especially considering that new camera the iPhone 6s series is sporting.

This purchase could point toward a smarter Photos app, or it could be nothing at all. Giant tech companies buy smaller ones all the time and Apple’s no stranger to that. But if Tim Cook and Co. can make using the imaging program less frustrating as a whole, we’ll really be in business.

‘RoboHon’ is the tiny robot smartphone you never knew you needed

Watch the teaser video after the break. Skip along then come back to me. Sharp’s RoboHon is so damn adorable, I can’t look away from this kawaii singularity. This robot smartphone is also jammed full of skills and features. A projector, articulated animated arms and legs, talkative but in a cutesy Japanese robot sort of way. You’re old, Pepper the robot. There I said it.

When the rest of a phone is an animated robot that sits down, other specifications sort of fade away, but Sharp’s given us most of the details. It’s not light (390 grams), or small (at 19.5cm tall, almost eight inches), making it the antithesis of how all other smartphones are evolving. There’s WiFi and LTE to make it work like a phone should, and a tiny two-inch 320 x 240 screen on its back — because you should be looking at its cute lil’ face, silly. Inside there, there’s cameras for facial recognition, and voice recognition built-in too. Both are features found in existing smartphones, but they’re not robots. Don’t you get it yet?

Hello, it’s the bizarre Japanese anime future calling. Are you going to pick it up?

Factory images for Android Marshmallow have been released

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

It was announced last week that Android Marshmallow for the Nexus devices would be released “next week”, and right on cue, the factory images for Android Marshmallow have been released today for your flashing convenience. Specifically, the images that are available today are for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player, just as we expected. If you’re looking for where to download them, you’ll be able to find all the images on the Google Developers website.

Just remember that if you’re going to be flashing a factory image to your device, you’ll need to back up all your essentials as it will wipe clean. If that sounds like too much effort, then you’re likely better off waiting for the OTA (over-the-air) updates that should be rolling out as we speak.

If you do take the plunge, we’d love to hear about how you’re finding it in the comments below.

T-Mobile details which devices will see Android 6.0 Marshmallow

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Earlier today Google released the coveted Android 6.0 Marshmallow factory images for the Nexus line of devices. While a good number of you out there are all about the Nexus and more than capable of installing the images on to your devices, there are still plenty of standard users out there who use other devices. If you are a T-Mobile subscriber then you might be curious as to which devices will be making the cut from Magenta. While the list might not surprise some, it is still good to have handy as a bit of a secondary confirmation. After all, a manufacturer could say they are going to make the update available, but it is still on the carrier to push it out.

In the case of Magenta they offer up a pretty nifty little page that keeps users more informed than some carriers out there. The page lists out devices along with the current stage of the update. It doesn’t offer up any time lines as to when an update is expected to move tot he next stage or when the update may become available, but if you check in frequently you could be surprised by a “Complete” status and begin mashing the update button.

Unsurprisingly we see the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 all being on the list. Remember, T-Mobile, along with AT&T and others carried some carrier versions of the devices as well. The rest of the list is as follows:

Samsung

LG

 • G3
 • G4
 • G Stylo

HTC

 • One M8
 • One M9

Some devices, like the Galaxy Note 4, you see additional details. For instance, the T-Mobile Note 4 hasn’t seen Android 5.1.1 because it is skipping straight to Android 6.0.

I will keep my eyes peeled for all my Magenta sporting friends for updates to as many of these devices as possible. Hopefully they will all be coming sooner rather than later. However, we have seen some updates take quite a while in the past.

ASUS releases ZenWatch FaceDesigner for their DIY watch face makers

zenwatch_facedesigner_app_icon

One of the benefits that Android fans enjoy with the operating system is the ability to customize so many parts of what is displayed on their smartphones. Launchers add several customizable options and an untold number of widgets give users the ability to get just the look they want, all without involving programming or graphic design skills. It should be no surprise then that similar capabilities are starting to expand through the Android ecosystem, like the ZenWatch FaceDesigner from ASUS that gives users the ability to design their own watch faces for ZenWatch smartwatches running Android Wear.

The ZenWatch FaceDesigner follows a three step process to customize the watch face. Users choose the base watch face, they choose a clock type, and then finish with an information widget. Each step gives users the ability to do things like choose images, colors, icons, and choose from a variety of pre-built information widgets. Users can even select their own image for a background.

The app may not be to the level where users could virtually replicate a Rolex or some of the more polished designs that are available for Android Wear devices, but it is a start and is likely a sign of things to come for the market.

If you have an ASUS ZenWatch or ASUS ZenWatch 2 device, head on over to the Play Store to grab the app and start work on designing that watch face that you have not had any luck finding elsewhere.
