US Cellular drops data pricing to beat AT&T and Verizon’s plans
US Cellular has announced a new set of data plans for customers that are designed to be a little more streamlined than their old offerings, all while still being cheaper than either AT&T or Verizon. The plans don’t go quite as far as Verizon’s newer plans in terms of being simpler, but they are cheaper, so that’s worth something.
You’ll be able to pick a data bucket (with unlimited talk and text, of course) ranging from 1 GB to 75 GB of data, each with a set price. If you’re under contract to get a subsidized phone, your line will cost an additional $40 per month, but if you’re going the financing route, you’ll only pay $20 per line with 6 GB or less of data, or $15 per line with 10 GB or more. Conversely, Verizon has introduced a flat $20 access fee for financed lines, while AT&T offers $15 and $25 access fees depending on how much data you have. In terms of simplicity, US Cellular hasn’t helped anything, but they are technically cheaper than both carriers with these new plans.
The base plan starts at just $25 for 1 GB of data, jumps to $40 for 3 GB, then increases in 15 dollar increments with 6 GB running $55 and 10 GB costing $70. Even their 15 GB package is just $90, beating out AT&T’s by 10 bucks. Factor in the discounted line access fees, and US Cellular is offering some of the most aggressively priced plans around.

John Sculley on ‘Steve Jobs’: Jeff Daniels’ Performance, Fails to Fully Capture Jobs
Just days before Steve Jobs opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 9, former Apple CEO John Sculley, who is portrayed in the movie by Jeff Daniels, spoke to The Wall Street Journal about his thoughts on the movie. Sculley liked the movie, calling it “extraordinary entertainment” and predicting it’ll be as successful as The Social Network.
Jeff Daniels as John Sculley in Steve Jobs
Sculley points out that he was “taken” by Daniels performance of him, saying that Daniels “accurately summarized a lot of the the things I felt then, and now.” Sculley participated in the development of the film, speaking with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and Daniels. He was impressed by Daniels’ efforts to understand him.
However, Sculley says that the film takes creative licenses with what actually happened. He notes that the film adds an extra encounter between him and Jobs after Jobs left Apple, that the words they exchanged during those encounters aren’t accurate and that him and the board still believed in the Mac after Jobs left. Sculley also echoes the thoughts of Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs and director Danny Boyle, who say the film doesn’t fully capture Jobs’ personality.
“Part of his personality was he was a passionate perfectionist, but there were so many other parts of Steve’s personality that I knew because Steve and I were not only business partners, but we were incredibly close friends for several years,” Sculley says. “I could tell you that the young Steve Jobs that I knew had a great sense of humor. He was on many occasions, when we were together, very warm. He cared a lot about the people he worked with and he was a good person. So, I think those aren’t the aspects that are focused on in this movie.”
Steve Jobs opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 9. The film will expand to more theaters on October 16 and open nationwide on October 23.
U.S. Cellular announces lower prices for its Shared Connect data plans

U.S. Cellular this morning announced that it would be lowering the prices of its Shared Connect plans in an effort to not only simplify their data tiers, but also to “beat Verizon and AT&T’s data plans.”
The new data tiers now come in 1, 3, 6, 10, 12, 15 and 20GB sizes, and are all being offered at reduced prices. The plans start at just $25 per month and also include the ever popular (and somewhat vague) Device Connection Charge, which will add an additional fee to the monthly bill. The Device Connection Charge depends on which data tier you end up choosing. Attached below is a list of U.S. Cellular’s new pricing tiers:
- 1GB of data – $25 per month, $20 Device Connection Charge
- 3GB of data – $40 per month, $20 Device Connection Charge
- 6GB of data – $55 per month, $20 Device Connection Charge
- 10GB of data – $70 per month, $15 Device Connection Charge
- 12GB of data – $80 per month, $15 Device Connection Charge
- 15GB of data – $90 per month, $15 Device Connection Charge
- 20GB of data – $110 per month, $15 Device Connection Charge
The new plans are now available for both new and current customers. For more information, head to U.S. Cellular’s website to get all the details.
Verizon is bringing Samsung Pay support to select Galaxy devices via a future software update

After not being a part of the big Samsung Pay launch on September 28th, Verizon has finally announced that it will bring support for Samsung’s payment method to compatible devices via a future software update. There’s no word on exactly when Verizon will begin rolling out Samsung Pay support, but we do know that owners of the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5 and S6 Edge+ will be among the first Big Red customers to use the new payment service.

If you own one of these devices on Verizon’s network and receive the software update, you’ll be able to use both NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) payments in a number of different stores. You’ll also need a VISA, MasterCard or American Express card from Bank of America, Citi or U.S. Bank in order to use the service, too. Samsung is working to expand the list of supported banks and cards in the near future.
Like we said previously, there’s no word as to exactly when we can expect the software update. If you receive the update, be sure to let us know in the comment section below!

Tesla Model Y hinted at in deleted Elon Musk Tweet
As is his wont, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk was Tweeting up a storm Friday afternoon, following the Wednesday-night debut and hand over of the first “Founder” edition Model X crossovers. Among the missives was this little gem, now deleted, which read, “there will be a Model 3 and a Model Y. One of the two will.” Since the Tweet was in response to “Not gonna lie, I’d sell my soul to @elonmusk for one. Please tell me the Model III crossover will have these doors!“, from @AwesomelyOZ, we know he was talking about the unique rear portals.
Considering we know the Model 3, which is to be denoted with the stylized “≡”, will be a sedan – though perhaps with a hatch à la Model S, rather than a traditional trunk – and that there will be also be a crossover built on this smaller, more affordable platform, it seems quite probable it will be called the Model Y (which Tesla has already trademarked). It also seems likely it will also feature the somewhat controversial “falcon wing” rear passenger doors.
Now, as we mentioned, Musk deleted this tweet. This could mean that he misspoke or, more likely, that he revealed something he wasn’t supposed to quite yet. It does seem to confirm, though, that the Tesla lineup will consist of Models S,≡,X,Y, and Roadster, remaining true to the company’s propensity for humorous touches, like a stereo volume that goes to 11, “Ludicrous” mode, and the new “Bioweapon Defense Mode” in the Model X.
It wasn’t the only Tweet he deleted from that session either. Another one, in response to to a question about a future Model X with a smaller, less expensive 70-kWh battery, elicited the response, “something like a 70, but probably around 12 months from now,” indicating that there will be a less-expensive Model X option in the future.
Tweets that remain from the afternoon social-media frenzy? One that claims the falcon wing doors can act as an umbrella and that parts of the interior have a hydrophobic coating. Also, contrary to a (now magically-corrected) Google error, his height is not five-foot-ten, but, rather, six-foot-two.

AT&T’s WiFi calling nears launch as FCC grants its waiver request
AT&T has received a waiver for its long-awaited WiFi calling feature from the FCC after it was delayed (yet again) by the lack of options for deaf users. It was already made available on a beta version of iOS 9 sometime ago, but it couldn’t be launched alongside the platform, since the FCC requires services like it to support teletypewriter (TTY) for the hearing-impaired. The newer technology that the carrier wants to use with it called real-time text (RTT) won’t be available until 2016. In a statement posted on the company’s website, senior executive vice president Jim Cicconi said that while they’re all grateful their request was granted, they’re still wondering why T-Mobile and Sprint were allowed to offer WiFi calling without a proper waiver from the commission.
We’re grateful the FCC has granted AT&T’s waiver request so we can begin providing Wi-Fi calling. At the same time we are left scratching our heads as to why the FCC still seems intent on excusing the behavior of T-Mobile and Sprint, who have been offering these services without a waiver for quite some time. Instead of initiating enforcement action against them, or at least opening an investigation, the agency has effectively invited them to now apply for similar waivers and implied that their prior flaunting of FCC rules will be ignored. This is exactly what we meant when our letter spoke of concerns about asymmetric regulation.
It’s unclear when AT&T plans to officially launch the feature at this point, but we’ll make sure let you know as soon as we find out.

Google’s Meter turns your home screen into an active widget
Google’s Creative Lab has released an interesting, and potentially super-helpful, new app on Tuesday called Meter. It transforms your boring, static wallpaper into a functional Material Design widget displaying either your remaining battery life, Wi-Fi signal strength or number of pending notifications. The widgets cycle whenever you turn off the screen so you’ll never get stuck counting reception bars. But don’t worry, the OS info bar isn’t going anywhere The app is free and, being a Creative Lab joint, is open sourced on GitHub.

October’s Android distribution numbers show little change from last month
Android 4.4 KitKat was and still is the most widely distributed version of Google’s mobile operating system worldwide. The gap, however, is closing as Lollipop is on the rise and that trend should remain with the introduction of Marshmallow. Unfortunately, Lollipop isn’t even in second place because three versions of Jelly Bean are standing tall. Both KitKat and Jelly Bean are very popular among low-end and mid-range devices. And somehow devices with Froyo, a version released in May 2010, are operating today.
Changes from last month:
- Froyo: 0%
- Gingerbread: -0.3%
- Ice Cream Sandwich: -0.3%
- Jelly Bean: -1.6%
- KitKat: -0.3%
- Lollipop: +2.5%
