Samsung will only have one Edge device next year according to report
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
This year, Samsung went all-in on its dual edge display technology, and while we still don’t have a clear picture of how this turned out for Samsung, I think most people would agree it was a success in at least some ways. One would think Samsung would go with the same line-up next year – since Samsung is so good at annualizing product releases – but a report out of Vietnam is suggesting that Samsung will only have one Edge device next year, and that it will be part of the Samsung Galaxy S7 line of smartphones.
That rumour might seem innocuous enough, but if you consider that Samsung had two Edge devices this year – the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+ – then it’s interesting that Samsung would reduce this to one Edge device for the whole year. The even bigger question is: which one would they bring back? Without sales numbers, it’s hard to compare the performance of both devices, but if we take the general preference of the market for larger smartphones, the we’d guess that Samsung would be launching a phablet-sized Galaxy S7 Edge+ next year.
What do you think about the rumour that Samsung will only have one Edge device next year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Researchers control fruit flies’ hearts with a laser
Scientists have directly controlled animals before, but these approaches tend to either require surgery or only work with critters at certain stages in their lives. Researchers might have a more powerful technique in store, however: they’ve managed to control fruit flies’ heartbeats through laser pulses. The approach relies on optogenetics, or modifying the genes of animals to produce materials that respond to light. In this case, the team tweaked flies’ heart cells to produce light-sensitive proteins. After that, it was just a matter of zapping the hearts to make them beat on command, whether the flies were larvae or full-grown insects.
Right now, this concept wouldn’t be very practical for humans. You aren’t about to see people with these kinds of genetic modifications, and human bodies are simply too thick for light to reach very far. It isn’t an impossible concept, though. Near-infrared light would work, and you could augment cells with the right proteins to achieve similar effects. Eventually, you could see optical pacemakers that sit outside your body and easily adapt to your needs over time.

Chinese firm wants to sell you genetically modified pet pigs
The concept of buying pets with custom genes may soon become a reality. Beijing Genomics Institute has divulged plans to sell genetically modified pigs whose DNA will keep them small, weighing in at a modest 31 to 44 pounds. The tweak was originally meant to produce ideal subjects for disease modeling research, but the healthy first generation is reportedly well-suited to pet buyers who don’t want large hogs in their living rooms. While it’s too soon to know exactly how long these “micro pigs” will live, they’re expected to last 15 to 20 years.
It’s not clear just when these pigs would go on sale, or for how much. It wouldn’t be surprising if they’re limited to China, mind you — many countries are jittery about importing pets in the first place, let alone ones with altered genes. As it stands, BGI will likely have to overcome cultural hurdles. Many people are still opposed to genetically modified animals in any form, and some of those that are in favor might still object to that practice with pets. You could argue that BGI is encouraging the ownership of pets that aren’t really house-friendly, for instance. Whatever your stance, the commercial launch should show whether or not society is ready (or willing) to accept tailor-made companions.

Google showcases its Search app in 3 helpful videos

Chances are many of you are not really taking full advantage of what the Google Search app can offer. Google is great for finding random information and local businesses, but its capabilities extend far beyond simple searches. One can control applications, set calendar entries, send messages, initiate calls, start navigation, turn on the flashlight and more!
In an effort to further demonstrate how resourceful Google Search and Google Now can be, the Mountain View tech giant has just released a trio of fun videos. These display real-life situations in which Google Search can be a life saver. Let’s take a look at them!
Pretty neat, right? I happen to be a fan of these ads. They are very personal and show everyday struggles we have all found ourselves in.
Are any of you guys using these unconventional features? Google Search is getting quite complex in Android devices. More recently the Search Giant integrated Twitter posts, the ability to find your phone via Search and a new service that connects you to home service workers.
In which other interesting ways do you guys use Google Search? I have to say I am not the best user when it comes to this app. I mostly use it for random searches and do everything else manually.

Robber with no vehicle used Uber as a getaway car

Uber is known as one of the safest forms of private transportation, but even the innovative service can have its dangers. I like to take a look at the website WhosDrivingYou.com, where there’s a comprehensive list of incidents many of us Uber users would rather not look at. It seems now the team can add a new incident, but this is not your usual occurrence.
Dashawn Terrell Cochran robbed a store in Parkville, Maryland. Armed with a gun and a bottle of Tylenol, he came up to the register and requested that the cashier give him all the cash. But there are two parts to a robbery: the actual theft… and the part where you get away with what you stole!
You will need some kind of getaway vehicle. And since this guy had none, he did what many of us would do when trying to get from point A to point B – he took an Uber!
Dashawn was caught by the authorities soon after he got on the back of the Lexus vehicle. But the odd part is that he wasn’t alone. The police mentioned a driver and another passenger were aboard, but they seem to be unrelated to the crime and had no idea who the robber was.
Cochran was charged with armed robbery, first degree assault, second degree assault and theft.
This just goes to show that not even Uber is completely safe. Try to take your precautions and always be safe! It’s not good to get too comfortable with any service, even one as safe as Uber. Have any of you been witness to any Uber horror stories? I personally haven’t. And the drivers are always pretty awesome folks!

ZTE’s high-end AXON mini, AXON MAX, and AXON Watch.
![ZTE_AXON_mini_availabile_in_three_color_options_-_Ion_Gold,_Chromium_Silver_and_Rose_Gold[2]](https://i1.wp.com/cdn01.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/ZTE_AXON_mini_availabile_in_three_color_options_-_Ion_Gold_Chromium_Silver_and_Rose_Gold2-840x431.jpg?resize=640%2C328)
Earlier this year when the mysterious Axon Phone was announced, it sparked a sensation-of-sorts as interested consumers tried to deduce how such an impressive “newcomer” could appear. As time passed, it became clear that ZTE was behind the device. Earlier today, the Chinese OEM held a media event to offer some insight into the new brand strategy it has in store: the Axon line is truly committed to producing premium devices aimed at the consummate connoisseur.
Adam Zeng, CEO of ZTE Mobile Devices, explained that “devices in our ZTE AXON product lines are designed entirely with consumers in mind and to be the nerve center of everything they do…Our high-end flagship strategy is now in full swing and we believe we have all of the ingredients to become a leading consumer electronics brand globally.”
The Axon Mini
While the tech-world is actively discussing the merits or lack-thereof for Apple’s 3D Touch, the AXON mini, first unveiled in July 2015, was actually the first smartphone announced to offer such technology, beating even Huawei’s Mate S. The device features a FHD 5.2-inch AMOLED 2.5D curved-edge screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 Octa-Core SoC with Adreno 405 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera, and a 2800mAh battery. MicroSD support up to 128GB cards is included. Three color options will be available: Ion Gold, Chromium Silver and Rose Gold.
Perhaps even more impressive are the extended spec-related details, as they truly provide some unprecedented premium performance on such a small-sized product: The device will be just 3.5mm thin and 70mm wide, with bezels of 0.85mm. The rear camera has phase-detection auto focus (PDAF) which will allow users to focus on their subject in just 0.1 seconds. The front camera has a 5P aspherical lens. The device supports dual microphones with an AKM4961 Hi-Fi audio chipset that provides 32-bit Hi-Fi audio and superior sound recording. The body is constructed from Boeing 787 aircraft-grade aluminum-titanium alloy.
The Axon (left) and Axon Mini (right).
Also highlighted is the device’s voice search functionality that “can be activated within 1.2 seconds…[and] comes with voice translation support for English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, offering real-time voice translation.” The Mini supports fingerprint authentication as well as eye-scanning and voice-recognition for use with biometric security verification.
For those interested in basketball, there will be an NBA variant that features alternative design options and includes NBA-related images and services.
In China, the phone will be available from ZTE’s online store, from JD.com, and at major retailers. In the next few months, the device will also be released in Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Russia, Japan, India, Australia, France, Germany, Turkey, Spain and Italy. Curiously no mention is given of the United States or Canada, perhaps suggesting that ZTE will announce the product at a separate event.
The Ion Gold and Chromium Silver models will retail for $379, however the Rose Gold variant will cost $399. Also mentioned, though no details were specified, is a “Mini Premium” which will land at $439. Given that the source specifically refers to the Mini NBA as such, it is unclear what this apparent third option will entail exactly.
Axon Watch

Also unveiled in July 2015 was the AXON Watch which will go on sale in China starting October 27th from ZTE’s online store, MyZTE. The wearable features a 1.4-inch Gorilla Glass screen with sapphire coating. It features 512MB of RAM, 4GB of on-board storage, a 300mAh battery, and Bluetooth 4.1. As the product was developed in conjunction with Tencent, and thus supports Tencent OS rather than Android Wear. As such, both QQ and WeChat are integrated with the device.
Axon Max
While the BusinessWire source report currently lacks details about the Axon Max, alternative sources have specified that it will contain a 6-inch QHD display, the Snapdragon 810 SoC, and feature 4GB of RAM. Based on the specs for both the standard Axon Phone and the Axon Mini, it can be assumed the Max will also include Hi-Fi audio along with the other bells and whistles.
Analysis
With the pending release of the Axon Mini, ZTE stands at an almost unchallenged position for petite, rivaled to an extent only by Sony’s Xperia Z5 Compact. The phone has a solid price tag, some truly jaw-dropping specs, and retains the signature look of the Axon line. ZTE appears to be quite serious in its efforts to not only reshape the way in which the world-at-large perceives it, but to go toe-to-toe with even the top-tier titans of the mobile industry.
It will be very interesting to spend some hands-on time with with Axon Mini and see if it can live up to the impressive spec sheet ZTE has put forth. What about you? Interested? Leave us your thoughts below!

US Trade Commission declines Samsung’s violation of Nvidia graphic chip patents
Samsung has been dealing with quite a few patent violations in court over recent months. Many in which have gone their way. According to the US Trade Commission, Samsung did not violate any of Nvidia’s graphic chip patents.
Samsung may have just got lucky, again. The US Trade Commission just ruled Samsung innocent of violating patents having to do with Nvidia’s recent graphic chips. The company was cleared of all three violations purposed by Nvidia. However, Nvidia is confident that with time it can have the call reversed. A final ruling reviewed by the full commission is said to be made by February of 2016.
Those who don’t know about the dispute, Nvidia claimed that chip makers Samsung and Qualcomm violated the company’s graphics chip technology without permission. Nvidia was hoping to reduce shipments of Samsung’s own Exynos processors found in many high-end Galaxy handsets along with some of Qualcomm’s widely used Snapdragon processors. We’ll keep an eye out for any movement regarding the reminder of the case.
