Apple could face $862 million in damages in University of Wisconsin patent lawsuit
Well folks, it looks like Apple is losing another patent lawsuit to the tune of $862 million in damages. A U.S. jury yesterday found that Apple used technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison without permission.
This particular patent aims to improve processor efficiency.
The Madison, Wisconsin jury found that the patent is valid, and as a result, they’re working on finding out how much Apple exactly owes in damages, which is a long and tedious process. The jury will have to decide what processors violate the patent. Apple’s A7, A8, A8X, A9, and A9X are all under consideration.
U.S. District Judge William Conley says that Apple could be liable of up to $862.4 million in damages. Judge Conley set the trial to happen in three stages–liability, damages, and a look into whether Apple violated this patent willfully, and if so, more penalties could be on the table.
Apple recently won a rather larger patent lawsuit against Samsung infringing on slide-to-unlock functionality, autocorrect, and much more.
The trial will obviously take some time to come to a conclusion, but the question is, will it help any? $862 million is a drop in the bucket for Apple, and there’s no telling if this lawsuit will actually bring any change to Apple’s processors.

Magic Leap’s moving into Motorola’s old campus
We don’t specifically know what Magic Leap is doing, but we do know where all of this unknown stuff is going to happen. The augmented reality / VR startup is renovating a 260,000 square foot building on Florida’s West Sunrise Boulevard. It’s not the first time that the location will serve as the home to a tech firm with ties to Google — since it was Motorola’s campus until earlier this year. Magic Leap, which has raised around half a billion dollars for its HoloLens/Minority Report/Neal Stephenson-style endeavors, is seen as the next big thing in merging the real and virtual worlds. According to the Miami Herald, the firm will begin moving in towards the end of the year, so be prepared for plenty of stories about how enterprising journalists tried, and failed, to gain access to its secrets.

Inside Apple’s Mac accessory testing lab
Design seems to be at the heart of every new Apple product. In the company’s eyes, a new laptop or tablet shouldn’t just perform well — it has to look, feel and sound right too. But just how far does the company go to maintain this vision? Ridiculously far, it turns out. To coincide with the latest iMacs, Backchannel was given an exclusive look at the Input Design Lab where Apple tests new keyboard, trackpad and mouse prototypes. The methods used are numerous, extensive and eye-opening; in one, Apple attaches sensors to testers to measure muscle fatigue and memory, acoustics and accuracy. In another, robots type repeatedly on keys and move mice around to measure their general performance, endurance, and adaptability on different surfaces. Some of these tests can reportedly require up to five million key taps. It’s rare for Apple to give this much insight into its R&D facilities, so hit up Backchannel‘s article for all of the photos and intriguing tidbits.

Uber’s latest service delivers just about anything in minutes
Those rumors of Uber launching a general-purpose delivery service, rather than the niche options it had before? They’re true. Meet UberRush, an option that lets you order most anything from local shops and get it in a matter of minutes. Theoretically, this eliminates the need to run out whenever you need something — you just ask a courier to do it for you. Stores have to sign up for this to work (and use a common online shopping platform like ChowNow or Shopify), but there are already “hundreds” of them ready to go. The main catch? Right now, UberRush is only available in Chicago, New York City and San Francisco. You may have to wait longer before these rapid-fire deliveries are available in other cities and countries.

Sainsbury’s announces its mobile network will close on January 15 next year
Some bad news for UK consumers today as Sainsbury’s announced the closure of its Mobile network, saying that the service shut down on January 15th next year in a statement posted on its website. Mobile by Sainsbury’s operates as an MVNO, piggybacking off the Vodafone network, and it’s thought that negotiations between the supermarket chain and Vodafone broke down for some reason, leading to the announcement. It has previously been rumoured that Vodafone intends on exiting the MVNO market altogether.
While it’s never a pleasant experience shopping around for a good deal, the good news is that Mobile by Sainsbury’s customers have 3 months to decide which network to move to, with Sainsbury’s stating it will make the process as pain-free as possible.
- Pay As You Go customers can top up until November 14, in-store and online, continuing to use credit up until January 15, 2016
- Pay Monthly SIM Only service will continue to work normally until Jan 15th.
There are also reports of customers receiving a notification text from Sainsbury’s, along with a £10 Nectar card credit and 6 months worth of double loyalty card points for food and fuel. If you haven’t received this text, it could be worth your while getting in touch with customer services.
If you are affected by the announcement, which network will you be switching to?

Camera Lab Test Scores iPhone 6s on Same Level as iPhone 6
In a new review for the iPhone 6s, DxOMark concluded that the camera on the 2015 iPhone line deserved a score of 82, equal to that of the score it gave for the iPhone 6 one year ago. The website measured seven factors (exposure and contrast, color, autofocus, texture, noise, artifacts, and flash) to determine an overall score for the camera on the iPhone 6s, giving the lowest marks to texture and noise (via CNET).

From our tests, images are generally well-exposed and for the most part colors are vivid and pleasing outdoors. However, there are occasional differences in exposure noticeable between consecutive captures in very bright outdoor scenes, typically due to the inconsistent activation of the HDR mode.
There is also a slight but consistent underexposure in extremely low light levels (5 lux); the result however is still quite usable and an improvement over the iPhone 6. White balance is reliable though inevitably some inaccuracies were noticeable at times, with a slight yellow cast visible in some outdoor scenes. Although this cast was present in captures from the iPhone 6 the cast was slightly stronger and more noticeable on the 6s.
A score of 82 is the same as the iPhone 6 in 2014, but also behind the 87 given to the Sony Xperia Z5 and the 86-scoring Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Apple’s rivals also won in a series of similar video tests, scoring between four and six points higher than the 80 awarded to the iPhone 6s.
DxOMark’s closing statement regarding the new iPhone line is a bit similar to the overall consensus found elsewhere online regarding the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The French optics and image processing firm described the smartphone as a “good balance of performance and top-notch user experience,” but not an entirely compelling upgrade from an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, especially when considering solely the camera and video tests conducted by the firm.

Tizen powered Samsung Z3 launches in India

After some indecision leading up to the Indian launch of its Z1 smartphone, Samsung has quickly followed up with a Tizen powered successor – the Samsung Z3. Again, the smartphone is making its début in India and is designed to cater to the value orientated segment of the market, but it does come with some notable hardware improvements over its predecessor.
Delving right on in to the hardware, the Samsung Z3 features a 5-inch HD (720p) Super AMOLED display, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, complete with a microSD card slot for an extra 128GB of space, should you need it. The phone also comes with a 2,600mAh battery, an 8 megapixel rear camera and 5MP front camera, which both feature an f/2.2 aperture and are a notable upgrades over the Z1. Sadly, 4G LTE support is one major missing feature.
The redesigned phone visually now has a lot more in common with the mid-range Galaxy A series and Samsung has also opted for a curved edge on the back of the phone in a similar fashion to the Galaxy Note 5. There is also a metallic finish running around the edge of the smartphone, which looks rather nice.
The Z3 is powered by Samsung’s Tizen operating system and comes with a range of software features. The ‘Ultra Data Saving Mode’ that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy J2 makes its way over to the Z3. This option compresses data traffic by up to 40 percent to help in areas with poor data coverage. The phone’s ‘Ultra Power Saving Mode’ can be used to disable all but the most basic functions to increase battery life too. Samsung has also pre-loaded its ‘My Galaxy’ app onto the handset, which offers consumers various exclusive services, local deals, and entertainment content tailored to the Indian market.

The Samsung Z3 comes in a choice of black, gold and silver color optiopns. The handset will cost Rs. 8,490 ($130) and will go on sale later this month through Indian retailer Snapdeal. The Z3 is also rumored to be heading to Europe at some point, although official plans have not been announced.

For a long time, Apple’s iPhone was referred to as the standard in mobile photography but over the past 12-18 months, we’ve seen Apple’s rivals narrow the gap and – if DxOMark’s rankings are to be believed – surpass the best that Cupertino has to offer. It’s been nearly two months since the iPhone 6S was released onto the market promising the greatest in camera quality but according to DxOMark, Apple doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Looking at the rankings, we can see that Apple does make the top 10, in three different instances but all of these round off the top ten. Ahead of Apple, Android dominates the rest of the top ten, with the Sony Xperia Z5 taking the top spot followed by the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and the Google Nexus 6P.
The LG G4 comes in fourth, while last year’s Galaxy Note 4 ranks highly in fifth. Next up is the very capable Moto X Style (aka the Moto X Pure Edition) while in seventh is Sony’s Xperia Z3+. The iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S then round off the top ten but it remains to be seen whether the iPhone 6S Plus can break into the top ten ahead of its siblings. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 is also conspicuous in its absence from the ranking and given the Note 4 and S6 Edge are high on the list, the Note 5 may yet be able to top the pile.
Camera shootout – Xperia Z5 vs LG G4 vs Galaxy Note 5 vs iPhone 6S
Now, DxOMark claims that the Xperia Z5 is the best smartphone camera but of course, each company has its own way of testing so we’ve conducted a small camera shootout of our own. Head over to our blind camera shootout to see how the Xperia Z5, LG G4, Moto X Style, iPhone 6S and Galaxy Note 5 stack up to each other and which comes closest to the Canon EOS 70D DSLR.
