lg-g4-color-comparison-aa-9-of-11

Are you ready for some Android 6.0 Marshmallow goodness? There’s plenty to be had with Google’s new iteration of their mobile OS. And if you are an LG user, the Korean manufacturer has good news for you. They are about to begin rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates, starting next week.

Hold your horses, though. It’s not time to celebrate just yet; at least not for everyone. The phone maker clearly mentions the first device to get the delicious update will be the LG G4. And because not all G4’s are created equal, they will begin with those in Poland. Other markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas are to follow soon afterward.

Aside from the common improvements we saw announced at Google IO, LG is also adding its own list of improvements. These include the following.

  • Permissions have been simplified with greater control of the information applications can access, not only at the installation stage but any time.
  • Silent feature for sound and vibrate mode as well as a Do Not Disturb mode to block all sounds or only alarms and notifications.
  • Doze Mode which shuts down background processing of certain apps when the phone is not in use, to significantly prolong battery life.

“By working closely with Google, LG has been able to bring Android 6.0 to the G4 ahead of any of our competitors. While speed alone isn’t an indicator of great service, it does go a long way toward giving consumers the confidence that LG is committed to its existing customers first.” -Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company

Life is truly good with LG for those who opted for the company’s flagship smartphone. The LG G4 is an awesome handset, and it is about to get even better. Sit tight and enjoy Android 6.0 Marshmallow once it hits your smartphone. Not all manufacturers are this quick; in fact, LG is beating most of the big players here.

Forbes lists the top-earning YouTube stars for 2014 to 2015

Forbes has ranked the YouTube stars who earned the most for the year ending on June 1, 2015… and the money they raked in can make you seriously think that you’re in the wrong line of work. The first person in the list shouldn’t surprise gamers: it’s Pewdiepie, who reportedly took in a jaw-dropping amount of $12 million for his video game playthroughs and commentaries. Another gamer, KSI, also made the list after taking in $4.5 million. Video gamers aren’t the only ones earning sweet, sweet YouTube money, though. Comedy acts seem to be doing great on the website, as well, with duos Smosh and Fine Brothers getting $8.5 million each. Showing off her unusual talent has paid off for Lindsey Stirling, as well, seeing as she took in $6 million for dancing while playing the violin in her videos. Michelle Phan may not be uploading as many make-up tutorials these days, but she still earned $3 million, thanks to her various deals and investments.

The publication used a number of sources, including Nielsen and IMDB to come up with the figures they did. Take note that these numbers represent the entirety of the personalities’ earnings before taxes, management and other fees — an earlier report by a Swedish newspaper put Pewdiepie’s earnings at $7 million in 2014 — and include the money they got from ads, sponsorships, book deals and the like. By the way, the prankster and the self-taught baking chef who make up the bottom of the list still made $2.5 million each, so we wouldn’t be surprised if you’re setting up a YouTube account right as you read this.

Zero Motorcycles’ latest electric bikes pack more powerful engines

Electric motorcycle maker Zero has announced its 2016 line up and it’s expanding its stable of two-wheeled vehicles. The FXS is a lightweight supermoto-inspired bike for the city while the DSR adds more power to the company’s fleet of dual sport bikes with additional toque and horsepower. Powering these new bikes and others in the lineup is the updated Z-force motor with improved performance and efficiency. Slideshow-328316

While rivals Mission and Brammo have either completely disappeared or been swallowed up by a larger company, Zero keeps improving and introducing new bikes. Its steadily improved its offerings over its 10-year history . I rode the DS model a few years and wasn’t impressed. It felt like a bad motorcycle with an electric motor strapped on. A few months back I rode the 2015 DS, FX and SR models and was impressed at how much the company had come at creating vehicles that were not only real motorcycles, but were fun to ride.

The new DSR has 25-percent more horsepower and 56-percent more torque than the regular DS. The performance is due to the new high-output 660 watt motor controller. The base model ($15,995) has a city range of 147 miles and freeway range of 70 miles when cruising at 70-miles an hour. The optional Power Tank adds an additional 2.8 kWh of power storage (at an additional $2,674) that extends the range to 179 miles in the city and 86 on the highway.

The FXS continues the FX’s mission to make riding on the street way more fun than it should be. It has 70 pounds of toque and up to 44 horsepower in a less-than-a-300-pound body. The 3.3 kWh version with 45 mile city range runs $8,495 while the 6.5 kWh version with a 90 mile city range will set you back $10,990.

The motorcycles are both powered by the updated Z-Force motor. Zero says the motor produces power more efficiently, cools more rapidly and has a higher thermal capability. Basically it lets you ride the bike harder and at higher sustained speeds with better range. In addition to the new bikes, the motor will be in the 2016 Zero SR, Zero S ZF13.0 and Zero DS ZF13.0.

Zero is also introducing an industry standard (J1772) charging port in its new Charge Tank accessory. It’s the same charging port system used by Tesla and the Fiat 500e. This is in addition to charging via a regular wall outlet. Known industry wide as Level 2 charging, the new tank will speed up charging from up to over eight hours to about two or three depending on the bike. The Charge Tank will be available in the spring for an additional $1,988 and will work with 2015 and later SR, DS, DSR and S models.

All these new bikes will be available in dealerships starting in November.

New ‘Live GIF’ App Turns Live Photos Into GIFs

The new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus allow users to create Live Photos, which capture an additional 3 seconds of video around a still image and play it back when a user 3D Touches the photo. Priime today launched a new app called Live GIF, letting users easily turn their Live Photos into GIFs that are viewable on all devices and the web.

When launched, the app automatically detects whether your phone has Live Photos and lists them in a grid. The user simply has to tap the Live Photo they want to turn into a GIF and the app does the rest, converting it to a shareable GIF. That GIF or a video taken from the Live Photo can then be saved to the Camera Roll, sent in a message or email, or uploaded to social networks.

LG is the fastest to upgrade its flagship to Android 6.0 Marshmallow

LG announced that the owners of their flagship smartphone, the LG G4, will be receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow as soon as next week. The roll out will start with users in Poland first, with markets in Europe, Asia, and the Americas to follow according to their press release. LG clearly understands the value of not just superb hardware, but more importantly keeping up with the latest version of Android.

Google is constantly evolving their Android platform, but manufacturers make customization which require them to update Google’s updates before they can roll out the latest version. In other words, this is known as fragmentation. LG’s competitors like Motorola and Samsung have just announced which devices of theirs are being worked on recently so LG really beat them to the upgrade. Sadly, Motorola even left out their 2014 flagship Moto X from receiving Android M further adding to fragmentation and leaving their premium customers behind.

LG is making a statement with this fast update to Android 6.0 by showing their commitment to support its best device. Cheers to you LG.

Pocket Programming helps beginners polish their coding skills

pocket-programming-1

Are any of you learning to code? It can be hard to get everything down at first, especially if you are an autodidact who learnt to code on his own. These are the users developer ffab0 is targeting with Pocket Programming – true beginners.

With that in mind, we have to tell you this app is not about coding. You won’t be using it to write a single line of code; instead, Pocket Programming is more about analyzing the code, helping those who are learning Ruby and Ruby on Rails.

The concept is simple – the application will ask you 10 questions per day for 4 weeks. Each question will have 3 choices, so as to keep your studying light-hearted. This will add no stress to your daily life, but it will definitely help you tone your coding brain muscles as you learn the ins and outs of developing digital content.

pocket-programming-2

You didn’t embark on a simple quest, and the creators of Pocket Programming know this. They actually learnt to code on their own, which is what inspired the creation of this app. Keisuke Hoshino and Yuto Kitakuni know the struggles of learning to program.

“Both of us have learned programming from scratch so we understand how beginners feel. Two or three technical terms in English are usually popped up to explain a single thing, such as instances and objects. These occasionally makes us confused and prevent us from grabbing the essence of the meaning. In addition, after the tutorial, we may not understand how to solve the problem when our own programming code exhibits an error.” -Keisuke Hoshino, Pocket Programming co-developer

“From my experience giving a lecture at a cram school, teachers have to teach anything while thinking about what is being looked for. But in the IT engineering industry, many teachers want to use difficult terms, which makes a high obstacle for beginners. Having a beginner’s perspective in our mind, we have developed this app so that it can motivate them to learn more.” -Yuto Kitakuni

Just keep in mind this app won’t teach you how to code! It’s a complementary learning tool that will help you fill in the gaps of your learning process. In essence, it supplements your coding education. With that in mind, head over to the Google Play Store if you are interested. Pocket Programming is worth $3.00, but it is very well worth it for a 4-week course.

‘AmpStrip’ heart rate wearable drops athletes to focus on health

Preview Of The 2015 Consumer Electronics ShowA while back we were introduced to AmpStrip: an innovative wearable that contains a thermometer, accelerometer and heart rate sensor, all packed into a barely-there Band-Aid-like strip. From what we saw at CES 2015, it was all set to swoop in and revolutionize how we look at wearables, with its practicality and ease of use unlike anything available to date. However, the startup company FitLinxx announced today that it has discontinued the product as a fitness tracker available to the public and will instead focus on the product’s potential medical applications.

AmpStrip was originally a crowdfunding project on Indiegogo that closed on September 16, 2015 and in that time the startup managed to raise over $500,000 USD for the project (734 over the target goal). Steven Schwartz, Head of Marketing at FitLinxx, confirmed the change of direction on the product page stating: “After much discussion and debate, we have decided to suspend development of AmpStrip as a fitness product. Going forward, we are going to first focus on the device’s potential uses as a medical device rather than a fitness device.”

In the two months since its last update, FitLinxx received a number of questions about shipments, but had no response. Today’s post broke the silence with an apology and promised a full refund, but has done little to calm irate investors who were expecting a product. Finally, we’re wondering what happened with the ‘Best of CES’ award the company received for their personalized fitness-tracking product they presented? It still remains emblazoned on the company site.

Microsoft Dialer for Android said to replace your phone app, coming later this year

android 4.4.3 dialer 2

Microsoft has been learning to play well with others under Satya Nadella’s leadership. Though the tech giant sees Google as one of its main competitors, they haven’t hesitated to get their software in the hands of as many Android users as possible. They recently released apps Send, Translator and Arrow Launcher for Android. In addition, they have acquired popular Android app Echo Lockscreen, as well as adding Android Studio and Eclipse support to their Visual Studio Emulator.

What’s next? If the latest rumors are to be believed, Microsoft is getting ready to launch Dialer, an application that is currently said to be under testing in India. What does it do? The app is being made by the Skype team, so it’s obvious communications will be the main focus, but it’s said to apply some very interesting features on top of simple voice calls.

microsoft-dialer-1

For starters, users will be able to call each other via slower networks, such as 2G and 3G. One will also be able to replace the phone app with Dialer, allowing for making regular ol’ calls. Aside from voice communications, Dialer will use the power of the internet to help users find relevant information on people, offices, nearby locations and public transportation. Real-time information about the caller and blocking capabilities will also be provided.

It seems like Dialer will be some sort of phone app on steroids, and it’s definitely something us Android folk would love to at least test out. Rumors say Dialer is set for release during the second week of December, but a public beta of the app could go live in November. And get this – this is only for Android. It seems the Windows Phone version won’t come until early 2016.

microsoft-dialer-2

Is this the kind of functionality you guys are looking for in a phone app? It certainly seems like our current dialers don’t do much. There are alternatives like Truecaller around, but being backed up by a company like Microsoft will really make a difference in popularity.

It’s just a matter of actually getting to test Dialer and see how good it is. You can be sure we will be playing with Microsoft’s upcoming Dialer as soon as we can. Meanwhile, hit the comments and let us know what you think of the idea.

The new Apple Store in Dubai will be located at the Mall of the Emirates, and will celebrate its grand opening at 4:00 PM local time, while the Abu Dhabi store will be located inside Yas Mall and hold its grand opening three hours later at 7:00 PM local time. Both new Apple Stores will provide traditional services such as the Genius Bar, Events, Workshops and Personal Setup.

FAA: Don’t pack lithium batteries in your checked bag

TSA Fails To Detect Explosives 95 Percent Of Time During Undercover Tests

If you’ve been packing extra lithium batteries in your checked bag before a flight, you might want to avoid doing so in the future. The FAA warns that storing those batteries in luggage that’ll travel in the cargo hold can “present a risk of both igniting and fueling fires.” The agency wants airlines to prohibit the practice and to remind travelers at check-in not to stow extras in a checked suitcase. Worried about running out of juice for that toothbrush or point-and-shoot camera? You might want to wait until you land to pick up more batteries.
