Redmi 2 Pro may be Xiaomi’s US debut, passes through the FCC

Xiaomi looks to have moved one step closer to releasing its first smartphone in the US, as one of the company’s handsets has been spotted over at the FCC website. The discovery comes one week after Xiaomi President Bin Lin reignited the conversation about the Chinese tech company making its début in the US.
The phone spotted at the FCC is named the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Pro, a relatively low-end 4.7-inch handset with a 1280 x720 display resolution. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 2,200mAh battery. It also boasts 4G LTE connectivity and some band support for US networks AT&T and T-Mobile.

The Redmi 2 Pro already appears to be on sale in some countries through a number of import retailers for around $150. The Redmi 2 Prime launched in India for $110 with identical specifications, so we have a rough ballpark for the price tag. This isn’t quite the super-midrange début that Bin Lin alluded too when he recently talked about a potential US launch of the Xiaomi Mi Note.
Xiaomi has seen plenty of success with low cost hardware in China and has recently passed the 3 million unit sales mark since its arrival in India. Perhaps the company is aiming to replicate this success in the US, without the need for carrier subsidised plans to makes its handsets appear affordable.
Of course, not every smartphone that passes through the FCC is destined to make it onto store shelves. We’ll sit and wait for an official announcement, but Xiaomi looks to be seriously considering its US options.
You can now pre-order the LG V10 through AT&T
AT&T is now taking pre-orders for LG’s latest ruggedized Android-powered smartphone, the V10. The handset is available in either Space Black or Opal Blue colorways with a price tag of $249.99 on a new 2-year contract. Current subscribers of the operator’s Next installment plan, however, will be able to pick it up for between $23.34-$35 per month.
Just in case you need a refresher on its specifications, the V10 is a mighty beast of a handset, packing a 5.7-inch qHD display, a Snapdragon 808 chipset, an Adreno 418 GPU, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable internal storage, a 16MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP Duo selfie shooter and a 3,000mAh Li-Ion battery.
If your not a fan of pre-ordering and would rather take your chances by heading to one of AT&T’s bricks-and-mortar stores, you will be able to do so from Friday, November 6.

Google is issuing a $25 refund to customers who are affected by the Nexus 6P shipping delay
It looks like Google is struggling to keep up with the demand for its much sought-after Nexus 6P as the search engine giant is in the process of sending out emails to an undisclosed number of customers informing them that their orders have been delayed, and won’t be leaving the warehouse for another 1-2 weeks.
By way of compensation, Google is giving customers who pre-ordered a handset and are affected by the delay a $25 refund, which will be credited back to their card of payment shortly after the phone ships.
A copy of the email Google is sending out can be seen below:
Thank you for buying a Nexus 6P from the Google Store. We’re really excited about this phone and we hope you are too. But we have some not-so-great news: It’s going to take a little longer to get the 6P to you than we would have liked. We’re working hard to meet the strong demand we ’re seeing for the color and memory size you ordered, and we promise it will be worth it! Rest assured that orders will still be shipped in the order that they were received.
As of now, we’re expecting to deliver your 6P order between 11/7/2015 and 11/14/2015, and we’ll send you a notification as soon as it goes out the door. As a courtesy, we’ll give you a $25 refund on your purchase, which we’ll process soon after your phone ships.
We know that waiting a bit longer can be inconvenient, though remember we won’t charge you until your order ships. We also want to make sure you’re aware that you can cancel your order. We’d hate to see you go, but if you need to, just follow the instructions here.
We apologize for this news, and thank you again for your order.
Sincerely, The Google Store Team

UK watchdog gives BT and EE’s merger the go-ahead
BT’s £12.5 billion acquisition of EE cleared a big hurdle today after the UK’s competition watchdog agreed to provisionally clear the deal. The Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) said today that after considering whether a union between the two companies would impact mobile, fixed line and broadband services, the merger was “not expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition in any market in the UK.”

EE unveils a tiny 4G clip-on camera
EE boasts one of the UK’s biggest and fastest mobile networks, but that doesn’t mean it can just sit back and wait for new customers to roll in. To keep itself busy, the company has got into the hardware game, producing smartphones, tablets and, quite recently, an action camera. Its GoPro aspirations continue today with the Capture Cam, a pocket-sized snapper for recording and livestreaming everyday moments. It’s a square device, measuring 55mm on either side, and comes with a clip so you can easily keep it on your shirt or backpack. Inside is an 8-megapixel sensor that can shoot stills and video up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. Like the Action Cam that preceded it, it’s also capable of livestreaming at a slightly lower resolution of 720p at 30 frames per second.
Volkswagen chokes on its first loss in 15 years
After inventing a diesel engine that doesn’t emit any harmful gases into the atmosphere, you’d think that VW would never run out of money ever again. Despite this, the German auto maker has just posted a quarterly loss of €3.48 billion ($3.84 billion) which, if we’re honest, makes very little sense. After all, the financial documents reveal that the firm was making a pile of money up until September, and then everything drops off a cliff. The only thing that makes sense is if something totally implausible took place, like discovering that the firm was engaged in a global system of emissions fraud. But, if we’re honest, nobody in their right mind would attempt something so irresponsible as that, would they.

Amazon brings its white Kindle to the UK
Amazon offers a range of different Kindle e-readers depending on your budget, but they normally always come in black. If you’ve wanted to stand out from the crowd, the only option has been to buy a colourful case or import a white model from Japan or China. Now, UK customers can enjoy a little bit more variety after the retailer decided to bring the white version east for the first time. It offers all of the same features as its black counterpart, including the 800 x 600 e-paper touchscreen, WiFi, 4GB of storage and the £60 price tag, and will ship from today.

Samsung Pay will work with more credit and gift cards in the US
Samsung Pay will be a lot more useful in the US these coming months. According to the South Korean electronics maker, the mobile payment service is doing quite well in the country, but it still has a limited reach because it only supports cards issued by a handful of major banks. In the coming months, though, the app will start accepting cards from Chase, PNC Bank, TD Bank, SunTrust, Fifth Third Bank, Key Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Navy Federal Credit Union, Virginia Credit Union, Associated Bank, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union and People’s United Bank. Have a Discover card? You have to wait a bit longer, but the payment facility will begin supporting it sometime in 2016.

Some Nexus 6P shipments delayed, but at least you are getting cash back

Today some Nexus 6P customers are getting bad news in their email inboxes… or they could be good news, depending on who you ask. In either case, it seems Google can’t handle the high demand for their new Nexus flagship as well as they thought.
Google’s sorry letter states that certain customers will not be seeing their shiny Nexus 6Ps until November 7-14. And though the Search Giant doesn’t specify much, it seems to affect only specific color and storage options.
The good news is you might be saving some money from this otherwise unfortunate situation! Google is making up for your inconveniencces by refunding $25 to affected parties. Pretty neat, right? That is, if you don’t mind waiting another week or two.

Facebook notifications tab blessed with life events, weather and relevant info

The Facebook notifications tab is great for seeing content related to you, but it’s not the best at presenting relevant information. What I mean is that so far it has simply been a list of your activity, as opposed to a smart service that goes above and beyond to find extra information you may like to see.
Some would say this is a complete waste of space, as there is much more Facebook could be doing to keep you in touch with people and your surroundings. But it seems the social network has been listening and now they are turning the notifications tab into something that reminds us a lot of Google Now.

Starting today, the Facebook app is getting an update with a completely reworked notifications tab. This area will now include timely, relevant information such as birthdays, life events, sports scores, TV reminders based on pages you like and events.
If that’s not enough, you can also opt to receive some extra cards (yes, they call them that too!) by enabling Location History. These additional cards include events happening around your vicinity, weather information, movies playing in theaters around you and even a list of nearby businesses.
Facebook wants to make sure these new features don’t get in the way or create a shock on users (we all know how everyone gets whenever Facebook changes something!). They have made sure to keep your notification settings the same, and you can customize what you see by tapping on the arrow to the right of each card.
As usual, the update is rolling out periodically, so not all of you will be getting it right away. And it’s coming to both Android and iOS devices. Have any of you checked out the new notifications tab yet? Hit the comments and let us know what you think about it.
